Seun:
Hello there,

I'm planning to start a commercial table tennis league for semi-professional players and spectators in my town.

1) Will it succeed? Can you imagine yourself or your friends paying to watch table tennis league matches?

2) Are you a good table tennis player? Can you imagine yourself playing serious table tennis every week?

3) Are you a sports professional? Do you have any tips or words of advice for me? Any contacts I will need?

Please share your thoughts on this table tennis venture of mine. Thanks in advance for your replies. wink

Did you ever go through with this plan Seun? Table tennis lover here
Travel / Re: Businesses Owned By Nigerians In Diaspora by haryomikun(m): 8:25pm On Feb 15, 2023
LordAdam16:

The Hausas have been traders connecting Northern cities with the foreign Arab markets for more than two centuries and before the amalgamation of Nigeria.

The reputation of the Igbos in entrepreneurship precedes them.

The Yorubas are noted for their devotion to education and salaried pursuits.

That does not mean that other tribes in Nigeria, including the Yorubas, do not run businesses. This is why I added the qualifier "overtly".

In the West, without any formal study or stat to point to, it does appear to me that distribution of Nigerian ethnicities in businesses is even or that any difference is statistically minuscule and therefore irrelevant. And more importantly, that regardless of ethnicity, Nigerian Americans overwhelmingly favor an educationally-inclined, salaried track.

If it seems to you that the majority of successful businesses in the West are run by Yorubas, I'll chalk that up to the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon. I would not be so bold to make a definitive statement like that. A good number of Nigerian Americans run their own firms or start companies on the side.

Adebayo Ogunlesi who has sat on the board of Goldman Sachs for more than 10 years founded his own firm Global Infrastructure Partners. But before that he worked at Credit Suisse. Mekka Don's sister Sylvia runs her own law firm, while he worked at a top 10 law firm before he ventured into rapping. They're Igbos.

The Nigerian community in the diaspora has grown in leaps and bounds since the 80s when there were less than 100,000 in the West. Then most Nigerians went exclusively via the study route. In the coming decades, kids of immigrants will start businesses at a higher rate than their forebears. I cannot predict how it will shake out by ethnicity.

The Indians and Chinese had humble beginnings in the West. We are fortunate to start out with education in temperature-controlled enclosures. The Japs and Chinese started out as contract laborers during the industrial revolution and primarily laid rail tracks crammed in shoebox dwellings in filthy conditions and heavily discriminated against. Things are obviously very different now.

Do none of you ever ask why the UK needs to import everything and people for every sector?

They don't have their own people that they can train to do these essential jobs? And if they do why are their own people refusing to take up these positions?

This is seriously thoughtful. I hope I can see an answer to this

Career / Re: The Tales Of A Worried Undergraduate. by haryomikun(m): 10:58pm On May 27, 2022
Covenant97:
Good day Nairalanders,

My name is Covenant Ajolore. A level 300 undergraduate student of Accounting in a Federal university in Nigeria.

My reason for writing is to seek advice as well as see others views as regard my current situation.

It dated back some years ago after the completion of my National diploma, graduated with distinction in accountancy from kaduna polytechnic at age 20. After that I went for my 1 year IT which I did in a bank while simultaneously applying for a DE into the university which I did not get twice(no thanks to unilorin) Two years wasted.

Unfortunately, I decide to change based and opt for a school in the North. given my grade and less competition, I got in and started from level 2 at which I was going to be 23 that year.

With high hopes and enthusiasm I thought I was going to complete my degree at age 25 and then had the chance to start a career in the big 4 (this was part of my plan) and hopefully start ICAN during service. But no thanks to Covid 19, and coupled with the current ASUU strike, it is now evident that it won’t be any way possible, and has thus aggravated my fears and stress level, due to the following effect it has on my plans/goals to be achieved.

1. i won’t be qualified for any graduate trainee job which criteria is a 2.1 and 26 years of age.(I am currently on a 4.40 CGPA and yet to write level 3 first semester exams and I am earnestly working towards graduating with a first class so the 2.1 criterion won’t be a hassle for me but the age factor would be).

2.All my course mate during my National diploma days in the polytechnic that has gone back for there HND are now graduates or currently serving.

Given my current predicaments what would be your next line of action or advice if you were to be in my shoes.

PS: The thought of writing ICAN exam is scaring the shit out of me and also life after school. I don’t know if this is common.

Ever heard of thinking out of the box? You see, thinking out of the box isn’t just for high-level professionals and businesspeople. It’s for everyone who wants to make a mark and I’m sure you’re one of them, going by your consistency in your academics.

Now’s the time to think out of the box. You know there’s a possibility you might not work in the big 4. What’s the contingent plan? What’s the Plan B?

Your fear is focused on the fact that you’ve dreamed for at least 5-10 years about being an accountant and working in the big 4. But when you look at things, the situation of the country is not what it used to be.

I’m in your shoes, closely nearing the 26 year-age limit for companies, and I’ve not taken my 300l exams. However, I have absolutely no fear. I’ve revamped my Data Science learning during this ASUU strike since tech companies either have higher or zero age limits.

If you’re looking for a remote job, there’s absolutely no age limit. I’m dead sure that a single remote job will pay you more than the 3-month salary of your dream big 4 job

My solution be dynamic… You had the brains to keep a 4.40 CGPA. Now utilize the brain for dynamism. Look past your ‘dreams’ and forge new ones.

Look for how you can get a job past the 26 year old limit in an unconventional way if you don’t want to give up your dreams. Or you can look up a totally different path.

If you can’t, then you were never truly intelligent.
