Politics › Re: Boko Haram ‘embarrassment’ Will End In Few Months, Says President by Hasselbaink: 12:07pm On Aug 03, 2014*. Modified: 12:28pm On Aug 03, 2014 |
Opeomoope: The menace of Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria will soon be a thing of the past, President Goodluck Jonathan has assured. Jonathan gave the assurance yesterday in Ile-Ife when he dropped in to pay homage to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade, on the way to the Peoples Democratic Party campaign rally in Osogbo. The president vowed to rid the country of insurgency and other forms of criminality, saying that his government is building a strong security infrastructure to deal with the country’s security challenges. He said, “There are certain things we should have done as a government, but because of the situation in the country, we have not been able to do many of them. The kind of embarrassment we are receiving now - will never continue in this country. “We want to build a very strong Army, Nigeria Police, Navy, and the Air Force so that these rascals called Boko Haram will never stop us because we will surely rout Boko Haram. We are very committed. “In the next few months, no criminals will ever embarrass us again - in this country.” The president assured Oba Sijuade that if the PDP candidate won the election in Osun, the federal government will bring development to the state. Earlier, the monarch had while welcoming the president said both Osun State and the South-west needed federal government's presence the region’s core sectors. “For instance, in the agricultural sector, cocoa farming, which is the mainstay of the economy of South-west, deserves better attention. In the aviation sector, it would be appreciated if the ongoing upgrading of the Ibadan airport is completed. In the transportation sector, it is high time our railway system was expanded to link the South-west with the South-east through Akure, Owo and Benin,” Oba Sijuade said. Jonathan also paid homage to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun.

Obiagelli: Here’s the news in brief: Nigerians who own television sets will soon have to pay “annual content access fee” to improve content and infrastructure of the country’s broadcasting stations. The fee is similar to the TV licence paid in the UK ─ which is used to fund the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). As a result, the BBC does not accept advertisements in the UK because it is financed with tax payers’ money. Government-owned broadcast stations in Nigeria run on subventions as well as advertising revenue. Nigeria currently operates a radio licence regime which is considered ineffective. However, the federal government said it would introduce “content access fee” to replace radio licence fee ahead of Nigeria’s migration to digital terrestrial television broadcasting by 2015. Information minister Labaran Maku made this known at the opening of the extra ordinary meeting of the National Council of Information (NCI) in Abuja. Maku said the planned content access fee, which was currently undergoing final adjustments, was expected to get the nod of the federal executive council before the migration. He said that government and other stakeholders would leverage on the new technology to make the new format more effective than the archaic radio licence fees format. Maku explained: “For a long time radio licences have not been collected and in other countries the public broadcast services are run from fees collected on broadcast content. “But unfortunately in our country, the existing constitutional provision has made fee collection less effective. “Now, we are undertaking a new format. We are taking advantage of the digital technology and looking beyond sending people to go from place to place to collect fees for broadcast content.” According to him, under this new regime, anyone seeking access to television content has to pay an annual content access fee. The minister outlined some of the advantages of the new broadcast content fee collection regime to include improved financial capability for stakeholders “to improve content and upgrade infrastructure”. He said this would help the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission and other stakeholders have access to adequate funds for sustained upgrade of their infrastructure for effective service delivery. On the NCI meeting, Maku said Nigeria was at crossroads to either transit smoothly or risk being cut-off from the rest of the world by June 2015 when the global migration deadline takes effect.

Car Talk › Re: 71% Federal Roads Now Motorable – FG by Hasselbaink: 6:43pm On Jul 03, 2014 |
theshadyexpress: JULY 3, 2014 BY OKECHUKWU NNODIM, ABUJA Leave a Comment The Federal Government on Thursday said over 71 per cent of federal roads in Nigeria are currently in good condition and are motorable.
It said a total of N1.469tr had been spent on federal roads across the six geopolitical zones in the country since 2011.
The Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, stated that from about 5,000km of fair roads in 2011, Nigeria currently has about 25,000km of the 35,000km of federal roads in good and motorable condition.
Onolememen, in a statement from the Federal Ministry of Works, said the present administration inherited federal roads which were generally described as “death traps,” as many road projects were either abandoned or moving at snail speed due to paucity of funds.
According to him, some roads alignments in Nigeria presently, can compete favorably with roads in the developed parts of the world.
He added that throughout the six geo-political zones, travel times had reduced between origins and destinations, cost of vehicle maintenance had drastically reduced, while accidents and carnage on Nigerian roads had dropped due to better pavement design and construction.
Onolememen said economic goods were better distributed through the nation’s arterial roads with better turn-around times that lead to more profits for entrepreneurs.
The minister said the ministry was currently executing 184 contracts across the country, majority of which were inherited by the present administration.
He stated that progress had been made with the rehabilitation, construction and expansion of key arterial projects.
Onolememen outlined some of the challenges faced by his ministry since assumption of duty to include the insurgency in the North-East, excess axle load of trucks beyond acceptable tonnage on highways and indiscriminate cutting across the highways.
Others include burning of tyres on the roads, erection of bumps on roads, destruction of road furniture as well as encroachment on right of ways.
The statement noted that 30 road projects with total length of 1255.1km, worth N275.6bn, had been executed in the North-Central zone.
It said 27 projects with a length of 1287.7km and total cost of N319.1bn were executed in the North-East, while the North-West had 20 projects, 1040.2km long, and worth N157.1m.
The South-East, South-South and South-West, according to the statement, had 45, 32 and 30 road projects executed in the zones respectively.
It noted that with the advent of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme, the government recorded remarkable progress in 2013 on the dualisation of four key arterial roads across the country.
