Investment / Re: OANDO PLC Stock Price Is At 3 Year High - Time To BUY? by haveworkskills: 8:21am On Jan 04, 2014
An Investment Conclusion Reached by an Analyst at a Time when People had zero belief in Oando, around the time when the stock was linked with IBORI, when people were dumping it..Hahahaha grin http://www.proshareng.com/news/20938.html

Based on current market price, trading multiples and present value of future performance expectations, we are of the opinion that the stock of Oando is oversold at the current time as it trades at a risk-adjusted discount of 25.01% to our estimate of its target price of N14.75, is cheaply priced and has a strong medium-to-long-term growth potential. With the stock down 10.48% and 15.38% year-to-date and year-on-year respectively, we believe the broader market is displaying dissatisfaction of unmet expectations given the firm’s recently released financial results. Whilst we accept that the firm’s broad financial performance in the first two quarters of the year leaves room for doubt and has made investors panic, lose some confidence and consequently price in pessimism into the stock, we are of the view that a turnaround is imminent. In our experience, all stocks have their ‘downtime’ which precedes a strong fundamental mean-reversion to intrinsic value. Although Oando is currently passing through its downtime and has thus attracted negative market sentiments, we believe this period is temporal and the stock will eventually mean-revert to its intrinsic value which we have estimated as being above its current market price. We view current levels as providing a buying opportunity into sub-Saharan Africa’s second largest integrated energy provider that not only has the strongest presence in Nigeria’s midstream and downstream petroleum subsectors, but also possesses the potential to surprise the market to the upside when its various investments begin to yield positive returns.

Taking forward prospects into cognisance, we are of the opinion that the recent drop in the stock’s price does not exactly reflect the quality of the firm’s fundamentals. We believe the time to take a BUY position in the stock is now, given its depressed price. In our view, any attempts to completely exit the stock at current levels will amount to substantial regret in the future. Using behavioural analysis, with probabilistic combinatorial optimization, we estimate such regret coefficient to be in the open-bounded neighbourhood of (0.63, 1.0). A regret coefficient estimates the degree of irrationality that captures the likelihood that a regret-averse investor who prematurely exited a previously undervalued stock will take substantial positions in that stock at a future time, even when the stock is no more undervalued. A coefficient between 0.60 and 1.0 signals that investors are almost sure to pay an unjustifiable premium at a future time for an undervalued stock they once exited.

Adesiji77: I sincerely need your professional advice. I am battling with serious feelings of regret! It's nearly 3 months that I left a new generation bank for a first generation bank but I can tell you that I battle with feelings of regret daily.

The emotions are choking me and are interfering with my personal and professional life. Have tried all sorts to get the past out of mind but the feelings refuse to go away. Everyday, I wished I never left my former employer. It's really driving me nuts!

What is the source of the regret? You've not said this. Is there something you get at the new generation bank that the old generation does not offer? Anyway, I will follow the details on jarushub.
Career / Re: Nigerian Statisticians/Analysts Forum by haveworkskills: 1:04pm On Nov 17, 2013
Njord: How could all of you be talking about data and statistics without mentioning Machine Learning and Hadoop, web mining and text mining etc. There's a machine learning class going on at www.coursera.com. With machine learning, you could train your computer to recognize complex patterns in data and automate all your data management tasks with several algorithms that have now made a normal statistician's job obsolete.Machine learning can be described as AI(Artificial Intelligence) in the field of statistics.

If you are a statistician and shying away from machine learning because of linear algebra, calculus, programming and other complex numerical methods, then you are not doing yourself any good. I am a EE graduate who learnt statistics on the fly through machine learning. I don't have to learn how to derive all the statistical formulae. I just look at the data, apply my favorite ML algorithm and instantly start classifying and predicting things within minutes. The bigger the data, the more accurate my predictions are.

Data nowadays is becoming huge day by day, and using the now obsolete statistical methods to analyze your data is simply not going to cut. Here enters Hadoop, the big data open source analytic tool built with Java.It employs a technology first invented by Google called MapReduce. If you really want to become a Data Scientist or analyst, then you should definitely check out Hadoop -Data Analyst are being replaced by Data Scientist(or could they co-exist ?)

This is 2013 guys,My wish is for all of us to quit practicing with "left overs" kind of education where we are dealing with disused things and start thinking about the future of Data analysis and Data Science in Nigeria. The developed worlds are talking about Weka, Apache Mahout, Python, R,Machine Learning , Deep learning, Neural Networks, Hadoop, Bayesian Reasoning etc.Why should we be any different..

With your skills as a statistician, you won't find it difficult applying your expertise in the fields mentioned above. That said, I have a Statistics book(Schaum's series) that I am skimming through now, It uses softwares like MINITAB, SPSS, EXCEl and SAS to analyze data with a lot of examples and exercises. I can't help but to laugh at the most primitive way to do data analysis. However,no knowlegde is a waste, so it's not a waste of time either, rather I am combining the theory gleaned from the book with practical skills gained from taking machine learning course at coursera.

Lastly, your computers have been empty, idle and slow for a while - I mean by using Microsoft technologies you are apparently limiting yourself to a lot of opportunities. Let's Behind it up by first installing Linux(ubuntu is open source and free).Around 80% of the world's web servers run on linux. It is fast, secure and reliable. You can run ubuntu OS and windows7 side by side as the linux kernel is not memory greedy. You can boot from windows or linux anytime with all your files in both Operating systems intact. Also, booting time for linux is less than 10s.

And @nairaland owner,I want to suggest that you try and update your site by adding a voting scheme where users can upvote good answers and downvote irrelevant ones. You have alot of work to do, your site has come a long way.Is it because there's no competition yet?Wait until this nerds living in the future usurp your site and make it obsolete.Hope you don't want to see that happen ? shocked

Thanks for listening....

Njord.....turning data into knowledge

Hi,

Machine learning is beyond the scope of this thread, but thanks for bringing onto the minds of forum members..A friend wants to do research in AI at Alberta. This was how I got interested in the field, myself.

TV/Movies / Re: How Much Does DSTV Nigeria Make Monthly? by haveworkskills: 12:37pm On Nov 17, 2013
Boss13: From the comments I read here I think we are being harsh on Multichoice. We want foreign investors to come into the country yet we get angry when we assume they are making so much money.

Multichoice came into this country in 1990 or 1991 by first launching a cable terrestrial network before going digital with satellite (DSTV). Please note that no business is established to make losses (except some Indian companies which I find ridiculous).

My surprise is that Multichoice has continue to remain a private company in Nigeria but has gone public in South Africa. Same thing with MTN and as a result of this, the general public cannot estimate accurately the revenue generated by these companies.

For a company that has been in this country for over 20 years, I think it is unacceptable for them not to be listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

Now to answer the question, Multichoice is making money and if they are not, they would have closed shop since. Even with all the political instability from 1990 till date, they continue to operate.

Hello Boss13,

This problem of going public is not restricted to Multichoice alone..In fact, the management of the NSE has been doing all things possible to ensure that these companies, including the telecoms firms, list on the exchange so that Nigerians can also have a share of their profits (and losses wink. The truth of the matter is that, over the years, these companies, especially firms like MTN, have so much made money off Nigerians that it is quite selfish for them to not have listed. And they keep repatriating funds to their countries of origin.

I will not be too harsh on Multichoice for not listing, I will be harsher on MTN. Over the last 5 years, a huge chunk of MTN's revenue has almost always come from Nigeria. In 2012 alone, about 29% of MTN's total revenue came from Nigeria, whlist MTN made a total net profit margin of 18% in the same year. This means that out of N100, for example, MTN made a profit of N18 after covering all its costs and expenses. Not even Mobil Oil can boast of such strong margin levels..Yet, MTN remains unlisted in the land where a large chunk of its milk and honey flows from..

Pitiable!

obailala:

My friend I think u are speaking too many economics grammar.. Nigeria is an abnormal society and as such, all these indices you mentioned does not really apply. If you doubt me, go and ask MTN, ECONET and the other telecom companies and they would educate you better...

My brother,

I agree with you that Nigeria is economically abnormal. Take for example, our GDP is growing, albeit at a decreasing rate..However, unemployment levels are also growing..This is an example of the madness exhibited by our economy..In sane environments, growth in GDP should be accompanied by a drop in unemployment as more and more people are being hired to stimulat output/production which is what grows GDP. So, you are right with the economic abnormality.

However, looking at the broader picture, we've to distinguish between necessity and luxury services. MTN, ECONET and the other telecom companies all provide necessity services. People can hardly do without making calls nowadays, but many people can go without watching TV, not to now talk of watching DSTV. I think you get my point. Media/ICT is never restricted to telecoms and so using telecoms to proxy the performance of other areas of the industry is not sustainable, in my mind.

Luxury services sell more in areas that are urbanized..That is why you see that the greatest luxury spend comes from the developed cities. However, these developed cities/states unfortunately do not make up 100% of Nigeria and there is still a huge problem with urbanization in Nigeria. Moreso, many regions in Nigeria are still grossly ruralised with very low income levels and consequently a near zero propensity to consume luxury services.. So, population is not necessarily an advantage for firms like DSTV, unless perhaps they offer a service that is affordable to the majority of Nigerias who, as I earlier articulated, are meagre income earners..For instance, if people can watch DSTV for N200 for some stations, just as you buy credit/airtime from the telecoms firms you listed, then population ‘might’ be an advantage and using telecoms firms to exemplify their performance will then be more appropriate .

This is my thinking, anyway. Sorry for the typos, but I’m sure you get my point.

Career / Re: When We Recruit In Nigeria . . . by haveworkskills: 11:39am On Nov 17, 2013
AjanleKoko: It's interesting that when we want to hire in Nigeria, we think certificates/paper qualifications first, before skills.
I didn't really appreciate the impact, or how deep this was, until recently.

I am currently looking to hire someone for a particular project, and I noticed that all the CVs I got did not really reflect the skill set I was searching for. But I got a lot of CVs with serious qualifications, and even IT certifications. When I discussed with a colleague she was like 'What level of qualification are you looking for? OND, HND, BSC or Masters Degree?' To be candid, that had not even entered my mind.

I can understand the candidates accumulating qualifications in a bid to get noticed. But what I don't get is the recruiters piling on the demand for more than the required qualifications, and not paying attention to the requisite skills a candidate has to offer. Personally, I think the MBA craze has done a fundamental damage to the job market, and turned it into a mere rat race. You have a lot of candidates, mostly with qualifications and no real skills, in a market that's highly undeveloped. Should organizations and recruiters not be encouraging prospective candidates to focus less on paper qualifications, and more of skills?

Some years back, there was this Chevron recruitment for OND-qualified engineers. I know of at least five people who were actually university graduates, but because they had earlier acquired an OND, they were able to get in. Ironic, isn't it?

Ajanlekoko,

I'm ecstatically jocund that you've brought up this issue. This is a problem we're now trying to address through our very low cost professional skill acquisition programme. Real skills, as required in office settings, are more beneficial in the long run than certificate accumulation...This is coming from someone who himself/herself likes certificates and wishes to accumulate as many as possible.

You may kindly read the attached document to get a sense of how we hope to close the gap between academic education and the much needed office-type skills.

TV/Movies / Re: How Much Does DSTV Nigeria Make Monthly? by haveworkskills: 1:20am On Nov 17, 2013
INFO TECH: I believe in having a lasting Nigeria business that grows year on year. Watching DSTV operate in Nigeria, I was just thinking: How much exactly does this Company make on a monthly basis.

From research it has 4 million subscribers. Base all on the 3000N package and that is 12 billion naira per month and over 140 billion naira annually!! cool

With this amount, they can pay for rights and also Make a tidy profit.

Do you think they make that much?

No, DSTV does not necessarily make that much. I once spoke with a guy who works there and he said despite Nigeria's advantageously huge population, very few people could afford DSTV at current subsription fees. I then suggested that the subscription fees be decreased by DSTV, so that the services would become more affordable to more Nigerians. Who knows if he has tabled this very simple suggestion before his bosses at the office.

My take is that discretionary spend is still very depressed in Nigeria, and unemployment levels are quite high. Of those who are 'lucky' to be employed, 70% of them earn below N100,000 per month while more than 75% of Nigerians live below the poverty line and income inequality is breaking the 45%-50% band..Given that more than 80% of the population earn meagre income, how then do you expect them to afford a luxury entertainment service offered by DSTV? Almost impossible if you ask me.

Until disposable income levels rise, perhaps via increased jobs and drop in mandatory household expenses etc, discretionary spend would remain low...And companies like DSTV can boast of a brighter future only if there are strong expectations that income levels and discretionary spend will better what they currently are. Given current happenings, I fear that DSTV may one day close shop, just as its fellow Lekki-based South African company recently did or plans to do. I do not want to state the name os the company as I'm unsure if it is now public knowledge that they're closing shop.

Let's watch and see how things go..

abioila: I am a 200 level Finance student also a P.E I student of the Institute of Chartered Accontant of Nigeria.I am interested in the training programme but I will like you to post more info on the location of the training programme, the timing, considering the fact that students will miss five days of lectures, is the internship also open to students and lastly, will there be a sort of proof like a certificate after the programme.............sorry for not sending this to one of the above e-mail addresses. It's easier to post on nairaland than sending an e-mail on my phone.

Dear Abiola,

If you're still interested in this life changing training opportunity, please send emails to financeprofessionalskills@gmail.com. Admitwithschola is on our bigger and stronger team.

Admitwithschola: Hot Careers in Finance and Investments . Please take your time to read and digest. This could just be the information you've been waiting for!

Learn major intermediate skills used by junior to mid-level professionals in Investment Banking, Portfolio Management, Private Equity, Credit Research, Equity Research, Hedge Funds and all other excitingly beautiful areas of finance.

--Are you a fairly smart university or polytechnic student aspiring for a career in the world of Finance and Investments and looking to move straight to Investment Banking and Financial Advisory as an intern or as a full time staff immediately after your graduation?

--Are you a professional accountant, commercial bank worker, micro-finance bank worker or a non-business related professional looking to acquire core Finance skills that will make you more marketable and eventually help you cross over to a more prestigious, glamorous field of Finance?

--Or do you just want to learn about how industry professionals approach Finance and Investing so that you can better manage your finances and investments and then sack your bankers, financial advisors and wealth managers?

If one of the above describes you by mistake, then congratulations!! We have good news for you. In line with our observation that very few programs in Nigeria provide a well rounded and affordable training to prepare aspiring individuals and professionals for lucrative careers in the various fields of Finance and Investments, we have decided to fill this very important void by designing a well-packed 5-day financial modeling and investment analysis course aimed at rigorously teaching participants the ropes of the financial services sector and exposing them to the latest practice in the world of Finance.

In this very highly packed course, my colleagues and I—we are a group of professional chartered accountants (think one of KPMG/PwC/Ernst Young), financial analysts, IT experts, educationists and financial engineers—will teach you almost everything you need to know in the world of Finance and Investments, so that you can comfortably land that private equity, asset management and investment banking job that you have always wanted and thereafter perform optimally on the job.

Specifically, we shall immerse you in the aqua of the following:

1. Financial Analysis—Here, we will teach you what to analyze in a company’s financial statements, how to analyze it, the most important metrics to look out for and how to structure your findings in a report so as to make your analysis well-understood by everyone, including non-finance professionals

2. Stock Market Analysis/Equity Research—In this section, we will teach you ‘how’ to identify all variables, both macroeconomic and microeconomic variables, that drive stock returns

• How industry experts predict the movement of stock prices
• Different types of fundamental equity valuation techniques
• And finally, how to prepare a detailed equity research report

3. Equity Research Analysis—Here, you will learn how industry experts predict stock prices and the key variables that drive the movement of stock prices, how to spot these key variables, where to find them and when to look out for them, i.e. seasonality search. You will also learn the different approaches to investing in stocks, and how fundamental equity analysis can help you ensure that these approaches are fully maximized.

4. Financial Modeling—Here, we shall specifically cover leveraged buyout models (LBO), mergers and acquisitions (M&A), income & balance modeling (I&B), management buyout models (MBO), transactional multiples analysis, equity multiples.

5. Analysis of macroeconomic variables in financial environment

In addition,
• The knowledge gained in the financial analysis segment of the training will prepare you well for a career in all private and publicly quoted companies, both local and multinational companies

• The knowledge gained in equity research/stock market analysis and macroeconomics will prepare you for a lucrative career in Asset Management, Investment Research and Management, Hedge Funds, Portfolio Management, Economic Policy, Wealth Management and Equity Trading

• The knowledge gained in financial modeling and transaction analysis will prepare you for a lucrative career in Private Equity, Investment Banking, M&A, Principal Investing and Private Wealth Management

One thing you must note:

• In the world of Finance and Investing, employers, in their bid to cut overhead and boost bottom-line, are ‘much’ more interested in potential employees who already have the practical knowledge, skills and professional competence to carry out the responsibilities for which they are hired to address. No employer derives pleasure investing millions of Naira training clueless employees. To put it straight, employers have preference for readymade employees who are not expensive to hire.

A Point to Reflect on:

• Imagine you are applying to a finance firm as an entry level applicant and you possess the skills highlighted above and can defend them impressively. If an employer is to choose between you (assume you demand a salary of 250k naira/month) and another guy/lady with 2 years experience having the same skills set as you (assume the guy demands a salary of 250k naira/month). Who do you think the company, making every effort to cut cost, would go for? The answer is clear and simple.

To the Interested Applicants:

• This 5-day intensive training presents a rare opportunity for you to quit complaining that you possess no sellable skills. Yes, in 5 days, just in 5 days, we shall train you on the raw and refined skills that you will need to actually speak confidently during your next interviews and land your next jobs. In a few cases, we may connect you to an organization where you can practice all what we have taught you. This connection may lead to a full-time position down the line, but there are no guarantees that it will. In fact, it normally should be unpaid when you first start with the organization(s).

Benefits of Attending our Training:

• Internship advice and contacts of industry professionals
• Graduate school admissions advice (Admitwithschola has serious expertise here)
• Unusual job hunting techniques and strategies
• Graduate school scholarship advice
• Your trainers will be a combination of mid-level professionals with background and experience in accounting (big 4), finance and investments, economics, business management, IT and stock analysis
• Your trainers also resourceful people with graduate degrees in investment, finance, economics and financial engineering from some of the respectable schools around the world

So, how much does the training cost?

Well, we have made the training cost abysmally low and we can confidently assure you that you cannot get the same quality of training and caliber of trainers elsewhere.

The training will cost 10,000Naira for current university students; 15,000Naira for NYSC corps members and 20,000Naira for those who have completed service and are looking to break into the world of finance. For professionals who have long been working in other fields, but now desire to change careers to finance, the fee is 25,000Naira. These costs are very low; we know this.

Again, we assuredly guarantee you of the highest possible standards and quality of training. We confidently state emphatically that you cannot get it better elsewhere at our very low costs. If you think we are just talking, then try our competitors. This will help you to better appreciate the services we are about to render you.

We remain loyal to you for your patronage.

For further information about the structure of the training program, please contact our registrar by email on adekanbiabiodun796@yahoo.com or financemodels.research@dabeecglng.com

Admissions began on 1 December 2012 and will close on January 15-17, 2013.
To speak with me in person, please do me an email as soon as possible so that we can make plans to meet before the deadlines.

Thank you
