Coz that's actually what i'm considering when it's time (ya'll know what i mean)...i'm not a party to this plenty people during wedding (nor be unto financial constraint o)...BUT i just want a brief ceremony and that's all. Look, I wrote it in the first paragraph that he should find a way to sort it out with the landlord basically through mutual dialogue and agreement.

I've been in a house where tenants where shouting for prepaid meter, and when the man eventually bought 6 prepaid meters about #85, 000 each, 5 of the tenants that were paying #2000 monthly, all ran away with an average of #450,000 on each meter. In the days of estimated billings, I found out that they don't even eat if there's no light. As soon as the light comes even if its 2am, that's when they will start cooking with hot plates.

So they ran away from the house leaving the man with the debts. The poor man passed away with the stress they caused him few months after. Have you ever wonder why many people are building personal houses nowadays? People don't build houses for rent like our parents did in their time any more because tenants can be so troublesome and most landlords don't and will never recoup the money they use in building the house let alone interest before they were killed by additional tenants trouble. You can do the maths viz-a-viz the average death age in the country!

You know quite well, that while on estimated billings, it is very likely that the monthly electricity bill is more than the 5K per person he was paying which consequently make up for the arrears when prepaid meter came.

Like I said, there are just few options:
1. Dialogue and settle the payment with the landlord. (Best - As it would be a structured payment, usually 40% - 60%)
2. If the landlord insist he pays and he objects, he can decide to move out or stay in darkness.
3. If the landlord agrees to pay, he also reserves the right to increase his rent by whatever how much suits him.
4. If he leaves, the landlord can start afresh with a new tenant with max rent in his mind, agency, commission, caution fees and others. Once all those are paid, the landlord would only need to pay off the arrears once for the new occupant while collecting the max rent every year.

Sometimes in life, we need to make it a win-win for both sides. The landlord has extended good will enough by purchasing prepaid meter.

The question I have for the op is....Did he, or Did he not accrue the 53k in all honesty and fairness?

Your points are clear....BUT STILL i feel i shouldn't be responsible for what i didn't owe....haba!....guess u know that's where the place of TENANCY AGREEMENT comes to play??.......just as u've mentioned above... some tenants ran away seeing a debt of 450k on such prepaid...if na me sef, i won't wait. You know most weapon they use is: U can't just rush and pack-out like that knowing the cost implication of getting a new apartment AND on the other hand if you stay back....u might likely not be able to cope with being in darkness for long. IT'S JUST SO PATHETIC!

This Nepa people are the third most corrupt organisation in Nigeria. Even if you applied for a new account prepaid meter, it comes with some debts on it. I will just say you and your landlord find a way to sort it out. But the good thing now is, you may not spend more than the 5k monthly again whilst the outstanding bills will be gradually cleared. So if, you were already paying 5k monthly on estimated system, just ensure you are paying same monthly on the prepaid. Afterall, the landlord would still have collected the 5k monthly from you if there's no prepaid.

I've had similar experience too before. And when one of the tenants objected to take the bill on the prepaid, the landlord simply increase the tenant rent by 100K while others pay the original rent. So consider the man for coughing out money and even giving it the thought to get prepaid for the house. Something that you will eventually start enjoying after 1-2years of paying your steady 5k, you may realise, you don't even need up to 2k loading every month.

Where I stay, before we're running about 7k per person in the house, and now with prepaid, some of us even run like N1500 per month and all the outstanding bill of about #250,000 remains just about #35,000.

The question is wouldn't you prefer paying 3k or the same 5k monthly and gradually clear off the outstandings on the prepaid meter that came? or You would prefer to continue paying the same 5k monthly on estimated system while the outstandings continue to increase

The whole point is....how do you treat your landlord in this instance? If you can stick loyally with your monthly 5k, you will be fine every month. The outstandings need to be cleared. Most landlords would increase their rent 30 to 50% after purchase of prepaid meter (Atleast that's what I would do if I were your landlord) and I will pay off all outstandings on the prepaid. But you will now have to be paying me 400K annually instead of the 250K you are currently paying for example.

It's kinda disheartening how we tend to be sentimental on some matters....a Landlord who has an accumulated debt during it's estimated billing days which his/her existing tenant in question knows nothing about would then be expected to join hands in clearing such DEBTS when a prepaid meter comes in...nah Bra!

The truth is....just like someone has said in previous page, most of these landlords enjoy this thing called "IMMUNITY"....a situation whereby even if confronted with a quarrel or not...na you go still packout commot from their house. it might also interest you to know that most of them doesn't usually add-up their own portion of money apportioned to them during estimated billing days....they'll quickly pressure you to pay-up to avoid disconnection (that is - if you stay together with your landlord) thereby surging up such debt in no time.

I'm currently in such dilemma as i'm typing this....there's a total debt of about 120k on our PREPAID METER which we've been paying for months now at our detriment...I only complied in paying coz light is an essential stuff that can't be ignored...now, immediately the arrival of our prepaid we were all summoned to a meeting to pls clear-up our outstanding debt which we did...in no time, an increment letter on house rent came in.

NOW, the picture i'm trying to paint is......some Landlords no send you then why give a FU3K about them....na their property, nobody go gimme gold medal when packing out from such house for clearing up a debt I know nothing of. My intentions now are...when it's time for their rent RENEWAL, I go just tell them say...their rent no go complete o, based on say i no go fit pay money wey i know nothing of. SHEKENA! make we begin fire ourselves from there..

Life hasn't bin easy fr evry graduate of this country (mst esp. the ones who has nobody)...and in my case...I'm an orphan sponsored thru sch by my blood Sis...(coz na last-born I be fr the family) my bro, I graduated "16...served in "17...aftr which i was sent away from home due to a little misunderstndn I had with my Sis. who sponsord me above...life became SO UNBEARABLE...had to scot with one to two old friends lik DAT sha...even feeding became a miracle...to cut my story short... I had registered fr the N-POWER scheme (batch B) while I was in service...God so good, I made their list...stipends of 30k started coming in...along the line i got a job in a sch as an administrative officer with a monthly salary of 28k (then i started saving heavily) mind you: i'll be 31 this year.... after saving fr about a year...I was able to gather like 300+...got a single room apartment as a young man who is about to start life...bought all my house equipments...moved to my apartment...lost my sch job due to a fraud that happened in my dept whch I knw nothing about...started roaming about again fr a while till I found a street Bro. who operates a printing services. Mind you: i'm an ICT inclined individual right from time (efficient in graphics design, typing etc)...I decided to join him for free with no salary attached...stayed with him fr over a year+...then he engaged me along the line...but ALL I could figure out is that he's kind of person who is only interested in using you...meanwhile, from part of my NPOWER savings...I had bought some office equipments fr my self like (photocopy machine, laminating machine, passport photo printer and so on) I would only say I found God's Grace coz I got dismissed again by same Street Bro. as i intentionally reduced my Zeal to his work when I found out that he's only interested in using someone.

Again, i applied fr this Survival Fund with some few slots...got selected and paid...as I type this, I hv gotten a shop of my own with the equipments I had gotten earlier...though still struggling with some funds to get the remaining things I need.

MY CONCLUSION:
FIRST...move close to God in prayer...then If u alrdy hav a skill... develop on it more and try applying for opportunities online (who knows)...things might workout by fluke.
