TV/Movies / Review Of The Movie Jagun Jagun (2023), Which Is Available On Netflix by hdmovieplug(m): 9:58am On Sep 13, 2023

What is the plot of the film Jagun Jagun? A young guy motivated to become a great warrior enlists in an elite army and experiences the love of a woman and the anger of a psychotic tyrant.

The Review

To truly understand the majesty, wealth, and powers of old Yoruba warriors, Jagun Jagun is the movie for you. This movie throws you amid the shenanigans of the old kings, how they used the powerful warriors to terrorize their people but inadvertently made the warriors very wealthy and powerful.

From the opening montage, the beauty of the rainforest is evident. The casting director deserves an award; every character is well chosen for their roles; anyone in the Yoruba movie industry plays a part in this movie. Some have no speaking part but play their roles to the T.

Femi Adebayo has always been excellent in his movies on the small screen. With the King of Thieves, he showed us he is the king of the large screen, too. With a stellar cast, Jagun Jagun leaves everything on the screen. The plot twists are unexpected, leaving your jaws on the ground.

Lateef Adedimeji is the king of the screens. We can have several kings, but no role is too small for him. And he brings his excellence and attention to detail in performing this role here.

Bukunmi Adesina leads the female character, and I love how she is not immediately introduced to us. She shows up with stealth and then captures the whole screen every time. The twist about her origin, role, and how Ogundiji uses her is fascinating and captivating.

The storyline is well-researched, all loose ends are tightened, and this movie has no boring scenes. Every scene connects to the larger story, and even the montage scenes are properly connected to the whole story.

The battle scenes are well choreographed, so you can almost feel the travails and pains that the warriors are going through. This movie employs a lot of SFX, but the beauty is that you don't know where they are; that is how good the SFX is, making you believe you are looking at the real thing.

The soundtrack for Jagun Jagun is well chosen, not intrusive, but lending the right atmosphere to the scenes. I usually don't watch the credits of a movie, but I watched the credits for this one because I was so captivated by the production. I hoped there would have been extra scenes like we get treated to in Marvel movies. Oh, well.

The introduction of the main character in the last scene makes you wonder if there will be a sequel, but it does not make you think the movie is unfinished. It is concluded but leaves room for more in a good way.

I almost have no criticism for Jagun Jagun. Perhaps I am biased, but the one criticism I might have is that in the opening scene, a warrior dies from a single cut to their hand, but my head has me explaining that the battle-axe may have been steeped in poison.

Jagun Jagun is an epic movie in the true sense of epic movies, with one or two sprinkling of current slang, but artfully employed to provide some comic relief. However, this movie is not comedic; it takes you by the jugular from the opening scene and only lets go in the last scene.

Politics / Nigeria Emerges Second ‘most Terrorised Country’ by hdmovieplug(m): 8:37am On Sep 05, 2022

The Global and International Terrorism Research/Analysis group, Jihad Analytics, has ranked Nigeria as the second most terrorised country in the world.

This was observed by some security experts in the country, noting that the research group claimed that Nigeria ranked second among nations struggling under the weight of terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping, after Iraq.

Moreso, in a statement jointly signed by the National Coordinator, Kolade Babatunde, and National Secretary, Dr Ibrahim Bulama Mongonu, Forum of Security Experts in Nigeria (FSEN), the concerned experts explained that the report by the Global and International Terrorism Research/Analysis has therefore generated intense debate among Nigerians.

The group then called on President Muhammadu Buhari to use the remaining months left in his administration to rejig the entire security architecture and redeem his name and past track records by appointing good and committed officers that can still reverse the negative trend in security even within three months.

According to South China Morning Post, the show’s creators split the narrative of Alchemy of Souls into two blocks as they found themselves unable to fit the entire story into a single season.

Alchemy of Souls is penned by screenwriting duo Hong Sisters (Hong Jung-eun and Mi-ran) and set in the fictional kingdom of Daeho, which appears to be loosely based on Korea’s Joseon era. The series revolves around a group of nobles and warriors whose fates become intertwined because of Hwanhonsool, a supernatural phenomenon involving the returned souls of the dead.

In Alchemy of Souls, Go Yoon-jung plays Nak-Su, a formidable assassin trapped in the body of a frail servant on a quest to regain her magical abilities.

Ex-NU’EST member Hwang Min-Hyun also stars as Seo Yool, the heir of a noble family who is gifted with good looks, intelligence and talent in martial arts – but is also naive and harbours a crush on a secretive girl.

In a three-star review of Alchemy of Souls, NME’s Tanu I. Raj praised its “compelling world and mesmerizing CGI, but that might not be enough to make up for its faults.”

TV/Movies / Alchemy Of Souls Season 1, Episode 19 Recap – Heightened Drama by hdmovieplug(m): 12:31pm On Aug 28, 2022

We begin with a flashback to Bu-yeon’s early life, watching as she guides Woo-tak (who is speculating that she is the daughter of Jang Gang based on the gwanju’s use of sorcery to save her), alongside Jin Mu, to the ice stone.

Alchemy of Souls season 1, episode 19 recap

The husband of Ho-gyeong is cynically grateful to the blind girl for the life he has been afforded because of her, though it’s clear that he is looking to exploit her powers at sensing things. Later on, we hear that Bu-yeon’s powers came not just from her mother, but from her father too, who was a “descendant of the fallen Choi family.”

Given that the latter family made their living through curses, and were descendants of the first people to perform the alchemy of souls, the blinded girl ended up with skills that would enable to her to “become the best priestess anyone had ever seen.”

Naturally, this means that there’s a bit of jealously, proven by the fact that Jin Mu steals the ice stone from Bu-yeon on the boat, and seemingly makes no attempt to save her once she ends up overboard. In time, the young girl wakes up on an area of sand, looked after by an elderly lady who gives her the new identity of Mu-deok. Then, after a quick succession of scenes demonstrating that the body Naksu inherited is Bu-yeon’s, we return to the present.

Here, the group within the barrier speculate that Jang Uk and Mu-deok must have died, with the Crown Prince worried that everyone else will too. At the same time, So-i appears to wonder whether she can transfer the worm inside of her to an increasingly weakening Seo Yul, while Jin Mu confronts Park Jin over the lack of a noticeable reference to the ice stone in Words of the Heart.

Of course, Songrim’s leader is equipped to hold his own, demonstrating to the King how he too can read the love letter that proves the sought after item was not destroyed so that the author could save his lover. At this point, an argument regarding both sacrifice and power occurs, before we return to the end of the last episode.

After Mu-deok shares a passionate kiss with Jang Uk, neglecting her extreme power for love, we cut to Master Lee’s explanation of the King’s Star. Considered sad because of the responsibility that comes with it, the teacher details that people who are able to use the heaven’s energy sometimes must do things that they do not wish to, “which can be very distressing and lonely.”

Looking up to the sky, the experienced mage reflects that the star will soon appear, meaning that there will be some departures, as well as some returns. Elsewhere, Dang-gu arrives with Cho-yeon at the apothecary Eunuch Kim frequented, only to find themselves stunned at the appearance of Woo-tak.

Next, we see that Ho-gyeong’s husband has came to visit the real Queen, hoping to convince her that she should hold the person responsible for causing him to be this way accountable.

A quick flashback shows Jang Gang’s capture of Shaman Choi, which came along with a burning of the spell books and tools that were used to perform “evil divinations.” Here, we see that the villainous woman jumped into the blaze in an attempt to save the family heirloom, a book titled Cheongang that contained information on the alchemy of souls. Curious by this, Jang Gang keeps hold of the item while Woo-tak rescues his sister.

In the present, the bitter Woo-tak once more rues Jang Gang for what he did, blaming him for everything that happened as he watches the true Queen suffer. Concurrently, Shaman Choi admits to Jin Mu that it affects her whenever the real owner of her body regains consciousness, stating that she would already have killed the royal if it wasn’t for the Lantern of Life.

Unable to be reassured over her health, Choi swiftly begins to think about how the ice stone ended up at Jeongjingak, remaining determined that she will take the power of the item using the alchemy of souls once the timing is right. Showing a bit of humanity, the assistant Gwanju expresses his wish to have the Crown Prince saved before the fake Queen does anything, confident that she can wait given that everyone is too concerned with being on edge.

Alone, Ho-gyeong reflects on Mu-deok’s previous uttering of the word “mother.” Aiming to convince herself that she must have misheard, Jinyowon’s leader calls the situation ridiculous prior to being joined by Park Jin. He’s concerned that people are more bothered by the ice stone than those trapped by it, so suggests a partnership to break the barrier.

However, Songrim’s leader soon becomes frustrated by his former ally’s reluctance to budge from her stance that the item is exclusive to Jinyowon, rendering him unable to have a say, so questions her on whether or not the relic really has been safe in her area for 200 years. Bringing up the visit of Jang Gang that saw him claim the ice stone, Park Jin effectively forces Ho-gyeong into an answer, which comes after a flashback showing how the gwanju used sorcery to protect Bu-yeon is played.

As Ho-gyeong still attempts to blame Songrim for what happened, given that Jang Gang took the stone away from Jinyowon and performed the alchemy of souls,

Park Jin confesses that this was why he wished to hide things, but that now he will do whatever he can to unveil the truth so amends can be made, even if Songrim need to have their wrongdoings aired. Willing to even go as far as to reprimand a person close to him, Park Jin seems extremely determined.

After Woo-tak talks the real Queen through her impending death, one that will come once Shaman Choi has shifted into the body of So-i, he turns around, only to be unexpectedly greeted by his upset daughter, in addition to Dang-gu.

Shocked, Woo-tak cannot defend himself, kickstarting a battle of strength between the three parties. Quelled by a moment of intense regret, we’re not yet able to view the resolution as we cut to Maidservant Kim emotionally welcoming the returning Jang Gang.

Once the Crown Prince establishes that the soul shifter in Jeongjingak was killed, he sends Cha Beom out to look for the two protagonists, curious as to how Jang Uk in particular managed to slay the monster.

Meanwhile, Mu-deok explains her ice stone illusion to the young master, evoking a response which sees the mage suggest he gives his energy to the sky, perhaps so that he can better control the seemingly uncontrollable. Adding that they should potentially try and turn the foggy barrier into rain given the ice stone’s flexibility in form, Jang Uk hears that his plan to use Tansu here might work, but he knows that it will cost him his energy.

As such, Mu-deok is firmly against the idea that would see her pupil lose everything, despite it being a way to counteract the Queen’s haste in taking the relic for herself. With that being said, the former assassin softens when it’s brought up that part of this scheme is to help the ailing Seo Yul.

Following on from So-i’s gifting of her worm laced with the blood of the Jin family to Seo Yul, Jin Mu angrily instructs the desperate Queen to put away the Soul Ejector, perplexed at her willingness to use sorcery to obtain the ice stone in the presence of the Unanimous Assembly. Yet all that occurs is an argument, with Shaman Choi angered by the assistant Gwanju’s explanations on the order of the world, and defamation.

Unable to accept the idea of subtlety in the plan, the soul shifter bemoans the fact that she had to enter the Queen’s body, as well as the fact that Jin Mu only wanted people to worship him for wielding his power. Antagonising the Cheonbugwan mage further over him being the by-product of an affair that disallowed him the chance to be properly acknowledged by the Jin family, Choi soon finds herself stood up to, and her past life mocked.

Next, Park Jin instructs Dang-gu to bring the body of the real Queen to the training centre so the truth can be revealed, but is startled by the information regaled by Songrim’s heir that Jang Gang also had a part to play in this ordeal.

Still, it doesn’t stop him from bringing the royal along to show Cheonbugwan and Jinyowon what has really happened. Outside, other members of the Unanimous Assembly panic over the barrier, while Heo Yeom vocalises the need for someone to undo the power of the ice stone, just like Seo Gyeong did all that time ago.

Succeeding his explanation to the Crown Prince over his risky plan, Jang Uk asks his former foe to take care of what happens next should the ice stone disappear. “Those who coveted its power will become resentful,” the young master says, wanting the royal to clean up any mess from that point, unwilling to accept requests that he should stop the plan in its tracks due to its danger.

Believing he is acting out of vigour, Jang Uk takes the sword from Mu-deok, who herself offers a quote exactly the same as the one the Songrim mage earlier claimed was from his master, piquing the curiosity of the Crown Prince.

Back at the training centre, Park Jin brings Shaman Choi’s body into the room, offering up some context about her history while ensuring he informs the crowd that everyone in the room is somewhat related to the villain.

Alongside Woo-tak, the real Queen is revealed to the onlookers, unable to keep her nerve as she drops to her knees to talk to both the King, and the woman who so brazenly stole her life from her. Bluntly stating the truth about what Shaman Choi did, the ill royal unknowingly jumpstarts some checks of the validity of the person now occupying her seat in life.

Throwing what is said to be the ashes of Gwigu up in the air, Park Jin flusters Shaman Choi, who immediately panics. As it turns out, she didn’t need to, and it was all a ruse planned by Songrim’s leader to expose the soul shifting identity of the villain.

Though the body is left untouched, with the real royal wanting it preserved for a potential return despite Park Jin’s best efforts to air all of the wrongdoings which stretch from Woo-tak’s relation to the Choi family, to the fake Bu-yeon who was set to become the inheritance ground of the faux Queen.

When Woo-tak is put on the line as a way to try and get Shaman Choi to return the Queen’s soul to its rightful body, the antagonist unleashes a tirade on the onlooking crowd, carefully going through all of their mistakes.

Yet a shocking act puts a stop to another clash between the villain and Jin Mu, as we see that Woo-tak decides to kill himself so that his sibling can flee with the remaining Soul Ejector. Demonic in her demeanour, Shaman Choi vows to get rid of the ice stone, but warns that once she does, everyone inside it will die.

Shortly after, Jang Uk has his life spared by the sacrifice of Jang Gang, who stops the energy of the Soul Ejector in its tracks, then confesses his sins in front of the King as per the orders of Lee Cheol. “I am responsible for all the mistakes related to Songrim, Jinyowon, and Cheonbugwan,” the Gwanju admits, explaining that he will become petrified where he is to make up for all that he has done wrong.

Unflinching in his commitment to a swift death, Jang Gang rejects the idea of Jang Uk seeing him first, reaffirming that he did not want him to live as the “son of a sinner.” Ergo, the Gwanju puts an end to his life right after those words, before we cut to the young master, who is without energy, retrieving the ice stone. At that point, the King’s Star appears, shocking the Unanimous Assembly, putting an end to the barrier, and leaving Jang Uk seemingly unscathed.

As the excited onlookers all speculate that there was someone within the barrier born with the same fate as Seo Gyeong, Park Jin enters Jeongjingak to see the praise heaped upon the Crown Prince, though Songrim’s leader knows the truth. Sweetly, Jang Uk and Mu-deok establish here their contentment in being together even without powers, prior to a fast forward in time.

In the new present, Seo Yul pettily rejects the help of the former assassin, only to find himself on the receiving end of genuine sentiments regarding her thankfulness for him keeping her secret all this time despite it being hard.

Then, the two discuss how Naksu only exists in his memory now, meaning that she cannot come with him to Seoho Fortress as was once promised, but that he can keep the bird whistle as a reminder of a warm past. Saying goodbye to each other with gratitude, the pairing go their separate ways while drawing a line under the chapter of their life that had previously been left unresolved.

Elsewhere, Jang Uk receives a portrait of his father from Dang-gu, who explains Jang Gang’s sacrifice that stopped the penalisation of Songrim and Jinyowon, in addition to the fact that he may have denied the young master’s identity as his son to prevent Uk from being blamed. Jang Uk isn’t upset though, stating that he stopped being bothered by that speculation a while ago, yet he does do some reflecting on the one meeting he did have with the Gwanju.

While watching Songrim face the royal family to be told that they can keep Jang Gang’s belongings, we hear that Jin Mu is still being looked for, meaning that he must have gone AWOL after the ordeal with the Gwanju.

The real Queen is worried that the Cheonbugwan mage could have shifted souls to exit the capital, unable to be recognised, but it’s made clear that part of these worries are just a front for her own concerns that she will have to permanently exist in Shaman Choi’s body. Jumping to blame Jang Uk, Park Jin explains that the young master’s rights to become the next Gwanju were taken away, while the King believes it would be unfair to hold the Songrim mage accountable given the fact Jang Gang stated Uk was not his son.

Receiving an item from Maidservant Kim which confirms to him that the old King is the father of Jang Uk, Park Jin discusses the truth with his close friend, leaving the maid worried that Jang Gang ruined his son’s life. Songrim’s leader plans on keeping the news a secret from the young master, and everyone else, however.

At the same time, the Crown Prince is shown to the King’s Star engraving, with the royal hearing that people are excited for someone with the energy of the this star to become King. With that being said, the heir has more important things on his mind, especially when afforded the chance to head to Cheonbugwan’s secret room for a meeting with Jin Mu.

There, the assistant Gwanju wants to begin a partnership of mutual protection, stating that he will get rid of the “ominous light” Jang Uk, the real owner of the King’s Star, in return for his life being spared. Somewhat contemplative given his former rival possesses something the royal “desperately yearned” for, it appears like the offer is under consideration.

The ending

Next, Mu-deok tries on a wedding dress on behalf of an unnamed bride, before Jang Uk enters for the two to perform a ritual together. The former assassin knows it is likely a proposal, yet it turns out to firstly be a grateful termination of the master-pupil relationship. Then, with the proper marriage proposal, and the happy couple staring contently into each other’s eyes upon the unspoken acceptance of a future wedding, the episode ends.

TV/Movies / King Of Thieves (ogundabede): The Brilliant Storytelling With Its Flaws by hdmovieplug(m): 12:13am On Aug 16, 2022

Nollywood has improved with filmmaking. The storytelling, the production, the casts, and more keep solidifying why Nollywood is one of the best movie industries in the world. The latest Femi Adebayo Salami movie, ‘King of Thieves (Ogundabede) is one of the movies that reinforce that fact.

Since the release of ‘King of Thieves (Ogundabede) on 4, April, 2022 across cinemas all over the country, the film has been doing some amazing numbers, both with the increase in the numbers of film lovers trooping in to see it in cinemas, and the numbers it’s raking in at the box office. Reports have it that the Yoruba epic has crossed the N300M mark in the box office making it the first indigenous film to hit that milestone.

The primary question to ask is how the movie was able to get to that milestone, especially for a movie that is in full Yoruba, but the answer is not very hard. The film has many brilliant elements that will make anyone that has seen it talk about it with someone else, and word of mouth can be said to be one of the best forms of marketing. The team behind ‘King of Thieves (Ogundabede) understood that and took advantage of it.

Of all the things people speak about in the movie, a number of them stand out that made the film a brilliant work of art.

A film is nothing without a solid story and this has been proven a number of times with stories that had an incredible cast but flopped because the story was not interesting enough. ‘King of Thieves (Ogundabede) is on a different level with the storytelling.

The film was opened in an art gallery where we were introduced to our narrator who lead us into the main story showing Ageshinkole as the villain. We were led through the story of how a king ascended in the town of Ajeromi, and how stealing is a grave offense in the village. Tying this to Ageshinkole, we were led to see how much of a trouble he posed for Ajeromi and the ways the tried to put an end to his reign of terror.

Apart from the subtitle that did justice in guiding the non-Yorubas that watched the film, the narrator (Segun Arinze) did a great job with the narration, telling the viewers everything that happened in the story.

The Casts

Star-studded movies flop more than half of the time either because the story is not solid or because roles are given to those who have no business playing those roles. ‘King of Thieves (Ogundabede) was an exception. Odunlade Adekola in the role of the king delivered an excellent performance with his body language, expressions and actions, while Femi Adebayo Salami played the perfect villain. It is still a wonder how he kept the white in his eyes there for all the parts he did in the movie. Ibrahim Chatta played his hunter role so carefully and perfectly and made no mistake while he switched to become a warrior, while Peju Ogunmola was a proper ‘Iya Agba’ (Mother).

Other casts of the film like Dele Odule, Toyin Abraham, Adebayo Salami, Wale Akorede, Ebun Oloyede, Ibrahim Yekeen, Lateef Adedimeji, Aishat Lawal, amongst many others contributed to the robust cast of the film, giving a stellar performance.

However, ‘King of Thieves (Ogundabede) was not without its flaws. There are some tiny details that might not be obvious to others but was there in the production of the movie that could have been better.

Continuity

It would be unfair to say the continuity is poor because of one tiny detail but the fact that the detail was ignored or not noticed created the first flaw in the movie.

The prince had earlier on spoken to his mother that he was going out and his mother and instructed that he made sure he goes out with guards because of the chaos in town and he had agreed. The next scene then showed Ageshinkole and his gang causing pandemonium in the village and the same prince was seen wearing a different cloth from earlier.

If we are to make an excuse for that error, we will say that scene was meant to be another day but the right continuity would have made it happen in the same day with the prince still in the same cloth instead of having the viewers try to put the pieces together by themselves.

VFX Effect

Nollywood still has a long way to go with VFX effects and ‘King of Thieves (Ogundabede) is another proof to that.

From the poor whirlwind effect – that had people outside of it rolling in one spot – to the unreal bees Abegunde (Lateef Adedimeji) released when he was fighting Ageshinkole, the VFX effects were just poor, it would have been really noticeable if the story was not interesting.

Conclusion

Overall, ‘King of Thieves (Ogundabede) is a good watch that gets a solid 8 out of 10. The storytelling is brilliant, the casting is perfect, the narration is top-notch and the sound is superb. These and many more confirms why it is doing well with the box office numbers.

TV/Movies / Every Neil Gaiman Movie And TV Adaptation, Ranked by hdmovieplug(m): 5:31pm On Aug 15, 2022

The Sandman finally debuted on Netflix last week, thereby bringing the illustrious career of its creator, Neil Gaiman, full circle. It was the release of The Sandman comics in 1989 that first made the British-born wordsmith someone to watch. It might have taken over 30 years for Lord Morpheus to awaken in live-action, however, but many other adaptations of Gaiman’s works have made it to the big and small screens in the meantime.

Starting as early as the 1990s, the movie and TV industries realized Gaiman’s writing was a rich well to draw from, so a bevy of the author’s novels, comics, and more have been brought to life over the years. Thanks to the high quality that Gaiman’s name guarantees, most of these have been satisfying adaptations. Although, inevitably, some of them were less successful, for various reasons.

There are more adaptations on the way as well, including Prime’s Anansi Boys, HBO Max’s Dead Boy Detectives, and Disney’s The Graveyard Book. Before those get here, let’s take a look at every Neil Gaiman adaptation released to date — some of which he’s been involved in, some of which he hasn’t—ranked from worst to best based on their IMDb ratings.

How to Talk to Girls at Parties (5.7)

John Cameron Mitchell, the creator of acclaimed hit, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, doing a movie based on a Neil Gaiman short story seemed like a match made in heaven, but unfortunately How to Talk to Girls at Parties disappointed when it arrived in 2017. Nevertheless, the film is as quirky and imaginative as you would expect. Alex Sharp stars as a punk rock-loving teen living in 1970s London who happens to meet a rebellious alien (Elle Fanning) at a party. Nicole Kidman also features.

Neil Gaiman’s Likely Stories (6.3)

Alongside every other pie he has a finger in, Gaiman is also a successful short story writer. In 2016, Sky One and Shudder teamed up to create an anthology series based on his shorter works titled Neil Gaiman’s Likely Stories. Sadly, the show only lasted for four episodes and the tales utilized seem to have been selected based on how easy they would be to recreate on a limited small-screen budget. A nice touch, though, is how Gaiman appears in each episode, as a god-like voice heard on the radio.

Neverwhere (7.2)

Gaiman’s first foray into the TV world came way back in 1996 with Neverwhere. While fans may be familiar with his novel of the same name, the concept also spawned a TV series. Neverwhere is an adult urban fantasy about the magical world of London Below. Gaiman’s scriptwriting holds up, but the show itself is let down by dated production values. However, it does star a cast full of future familiar faces like Laura Fraser, Paterson Joseph, and Peter Capaldi.

Stardust (7.6)

Arguably the first mainstream Gaiman adaptation, 2007’s Stardust — from future Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn — sailed under the radar upon its release, but it’s since become a firm fan favorite. Comparable to The Princess Bride, this romantic fantasy adventure sees Tristan (a pre-Daredevil Charlie Cox) journey across the land of Stormhold with fallen star Yvaine (Claire Danes) as they face a sky pirate (Robert De Niro), an evil witch (Michelle Pfeiffer), and a power-hungry prince (Mark Strong).

American Gods (7.7)

Starz’s American Gods initially opened to considerable acclaim back in 2017, but various behind-the-scenes upheavals and problems — including the controversial firing of Orlando Jones — caused the positive buzz to dim somewhat over the years, until it was ultimately cancelled after three seasons in 2021. Still, there’s plenty to love about the show, which follows Shadow (Ricky Whittle) as he works for Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) and finds himself in the middle of a conflict between old and new gods.

Coraline (7.7)

The Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick helmed this wonderfully creepy stop-motion animated adaptation of Gaiman’s best-selling children’s book, delivering one of the best horror movies for kids in the process. Dakota Fanning voices Coraline Jones, the eponymous brave young girl who must rescue her parents from the clutches of the Other Mother (Teri Hatcher), a spider-like being from another realm who wants to sew buttons into her eyes.

DC Showcase: Death (7.cool

Before The Sandman got here, there was this 2019 animated short all about Dream’s big sister, Death. Available as an extra on the home release of Wonder Woman: Bloodlines, the 20-minute short details the life of Gotham City resident Vincent Omata (Leonardo Nam) in flashbacks, with the role of Death played by Sucker Punch star Jamie Chung. Although an original story, this short is notable for being the first screen adaptation of the Endless — but it wasn’t the last.

Good Omens (8.0)

After the death of Good Omens co-author Sir Terry Pratchett, Gaiman decided to take the bull by the horns and spearhead the long-gestating TV series himself. With Gaiman as showrunner, the series is a perfect translation and update of the fantasy-comedy story, which follows unlikely friends Aziraphale the angel (Michael Sheen) and Crowley the demon (David Tennant) as they attempt to avert Armageddon. By popular demand, a second season is on its way to Amazon Prime.

The Sandman (8.0)

In joint second place with Good Omens, according to IMDb users, we have Gaiman’s latest adaptation, The Sandman. After 30 years, there were high expectations for this Netflix series to live up to its seminal source material. Gaiman again served as co-showrunner, so naturally the first season is a close retelling of the first two comic book volumes. Starring Tom Sturridge as Dream of the Endless, the series is just as epic, dark, and grandiose as fans could have asked for.

Lucifer (8.1)

Interestingly, perhaps the loosest adaptation of Gaiman’s work is the highest rated out of them all. While fans usually prefer close adaptations, they had to make an exception with Lucifer, which is one of the most popular Netflix series of all time. That’s for good reason as Tom Ellis’ Lucifer Morningstar is a devilishly charismatic lead, even if he is nothing like the version Gaiman wrote in the pages of The Sandman.

TV/Movies / The Sandman: 10 Thought-provoking Quotes From The Series by hdmovieplug(m): 12:14pm On Aug 14, 2022

The Sandman is one of Netflix’s newest fantasy series, and it is absolutely rich in lore, visuals, and dreamlike delivery have absolutely won it some well-deserved acclaim. The long-awaited adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s magnum opus is full of admirable qualities and elements, but nowhere does the author’s genius shine better than in the show’s writing.

The series is loaded to the brim with great lines of dialogue but like so many of the author’s published works, many of these quotes carry a deeper meaning for the audience to reflect upon. Even characters like John Dee and Lucifer Morningstar can be inspirational when further analyzed. Of course, such things are to be expected from a writer of Gaiman’s caliber.

10 “The Only Reason People Die Is Because Everyone Does It.”

Hob Gadling

The subject of immortality aside, Hob makes a rather interesting observation in his dismissal of death. This phrase uttered in both the show and the comic can be interpreted on a more philosophical level than viewers might think.

Hob might not mean dying in the biological sense, but rather in the sense of complacency. Unlike other characters in the series, Hob sees the beauty, ingenuity, and evolution of the human race centuries before the main plot of the series takes place. It might be insight, it might be optimism, it might be luck, but his determination to live and truly live is beyond admirable

9 “So Many People Are Looking For Reasons To Be Unhappy.”

Fiddler’s Green

Of all the characters who decidedly deserved more screen time, Gilbert/Fiddler’s Green was certainly one of them, even if just to get more whimsy from Stephen Fry. However, this particular line of dialogue has a negative truth to it that continues to reaffirm itself with each passing day, especially in modern times.

Pessimism can often be a slippery slope that leads to a rocky downfall, and this quote from Gilbert solidifies the notion. As a character experiencing humanity for the first time, his perception is decidedly brighter than those who are natural-born humans. If more people saw things his way, it might be a brighter world.

8 “Tools Are The Subtlest Of Traps.”

Lucifer

The full quote is “Tools are the subtlest of traps. We become reliant upon them and in their absence, we are vulnerable, weak, defenseless.” Lucifer Morningstar is the last character in all the realms that anyone should take any life advice from, but they do offer a pretty solid warning about relying too much on external forces.

In a sense, this is a quote about being too complacent or too reliant on a crutch. Although humans might not have access to magical rubies or enchanted helmets, they do rely on certain coping mechanisms or substances when life gets hard. The message here is self-reliance, but the quote certainly has multiple meetings just as Lucifer has multiple forms.

7 . “Good People Seldom Survive In This World.”

John Dee

John Dee is one of the most nihilistic characters in comic books, and that factor carries over brilliantly in the series. Dr. Destiny wants to reimagine the world with the Dream Stone because of how twisted and unfair the world is, but his unhinged nature might also be to blame. That all being said, he does cut to the quick on occasion.

A better translation of this quote might be “no good deed goes unpunished,” but at least Dee is kind enough to give his rescuer the protection amulet before unleashing pandemonium in “24/7.” In his own way, he was at least attempting to right an injustice before he went full supervillain.

6 “The Truth Is A Cleansing Fire Which Burns Away The Lies We’ve Told Each Other And The Lies We’ve Told Ourselves.”

John Dee

Once more, John Dee doesn’t care about stepping on any toes with this pearl of blunt wisdom. Honesty is the best policy, as the saying goes, but when the truth behind the lives of the patrons of the diner is ripped out in the open, it comes with some deadly consequences.

Some say that the truth will stand when the world is on fire, and John Dee is the one holding a match and a tank of gasoline. What makes the quote so powerful is that he isn’t wrong and that the truth will bring anything to a different light. His methods are malicious, but his logic is sound.

5 . “It Is As Natural To Die As It Is To Live.”

Death

As one of the series’ best characters, Death serves as the voice of reason in Dream’s broody moments, and this is no exception. Unlike other personifications of death seen in movies, comics, and literature, Neil Gaiman’s adaptation has a much more approachable and friendlier nature. Despite her gothic appearance, she is not the great equalizer seen in other media.

Death has essentially excepted her lot in life, and she’s okay with it. She has accepted herself like all humans must accept her and her function. In short, death is a part of life, and it’s better to accept it than to live in fear.

4 . “A Demon Has A Hundred Motives For Anything He Does, All Of Them Malevolent.”

Dream

Dream has a litany of wonderful lines in the series, but this one carries a certain flavor that is unabashedly Neil Gaiman. Squatterbloat isn’t the only demon he encounters in his journeys, but this warning against his kind is certainly applicable to monsters both human and nonhuman in and out of the Waking World.

If there’s one thing Gaiman knows how to write, it’s mystical and magical entities. There’s just a palpable sense of appreciation for characters like Dream and the demons he faces, and this quote feels like a representation of the author truly knowing his work.

3 “What Power Would Hell Have If Those Imprisoned Here Were Not Able To Dream of Heaven?”

Dream

One of Dream’s shining moments in both the comics and the series is when he puts Lucifer in their place and walks out of Hell by his own wit and wiles alone. This line assures his survival and asserts his power even in the face of the devil themselves, but it masks a more important message.

As demonstrated by his duel with the devil, Dream reminds both Lucifer and the viewers that hope never dies. In his take on “hope springs eternal,” the Sandman assures even every demon and damned soul in Hell that there is always hope even in the darkest regions.

2 “We Do Not Choose To Be Created, Nor Do We Choose How We Are Made.”

Dream

This quote is where things get both personal and complicated, but the sentiment is still true. To take a page from Tolkien, this is Dream’s (and Gaiman’s by extent) answer to Gandalf’s maxim of choosing what to do with the time people are given. However, Dream goes just a bit further than that by taking a sort of semi-psychological dive.

By “made,” Dream isn’t necessarily referring to a station or situation, but rather how personality and background are developed. Whether it’s a case of nature vs. nurture or becoming a product of environmental factors, the message that comes clear is that dreamers choose not how they come to exist, but what they do with their existence.

1 “If Dreams Disappear, Then So Will Humanity.”
Dream

Although the context concerns the presence of a Vortex in the waking world, there’s a bigger picture at play with this warning from Dream. In spite of Dream’s dark and brooding demeanor, his line actually comes with a more optimistic message than some fans might consider.

Dream’s warning about the fading of dreams could very easily apply in a more personal sense. It’s not a “follow your dreams” message, but rather the idea that without dreams, humans cease to be human. It’s more about aspirations, it’s about imagination and invention as well. In no uncertain terms, humanity loses its meaning if these things are taken away.

TV/Movies / Doctor Strange 2 Already Made Kang A More Terrifying Villain Than Thanos by hdmovieplug(m): 2:35pm On Jul 26, 2022

The implications of multiversal travel in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness show why Kang the Conqueror might be a more terrifying villain than Thanos. Kang is the presumed next big bad of the MCU. The Disney+ series Loki introduced a variant of Kang, known as “He Who Remains,” who explains the dangers of multiversal war. In Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the exploration of incursion events shows why “He Who Remains” was so worried about the arrival of his evil counterpart.

Kang is next set to appear in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but the MCU is already laying the foundation for the character. Kang is one of Marvel’s oldest villains, both in the continuity of the story and with his first comic appearance being in 1964. He is also one of the more complex villains, with varied personas across several timelines. He is originally Nathaniel Richards, a distant relative of his namesake, born on an alternate Earth who takes on many names, including Immortus and Iron Lad. Unlike most of the huge threats in the Marvel universe, Kang does not possess supernatural powers but instead uses his superior intellect and knowledge of the multiverse.

Kang might not be more powerful than Thanos from a strictly physiological standpoint, but his knowledge of how the multiverse works makes him a higher-level threat in the MCU. Thanos, empowered by the Infinity Stones, only affected the universe where he was present. In Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the alternate version of the Avengers on Earth-838, the Illuminati, had to deal with their own Thanos, which shows he was only a universal threat. The introduction of incursions, which are described as multiple universes collapsing on each other, proves that Kang is a multiversal threat.

Earth-838’s Reed Richards explains that an incursion can happen when a traveler from another universe leaves a significant footprint on the universe they are traveling to, causing them to collide. A glimpse of the damage one of the MCU’s multiversal incursions can do is evident in the universe of Sinister Dr. Strange, a variant corrupted by the Darkhold. He uses the book of the damned to dreamwalk into the multiverse, which leads to his own decaying universe. For Kang, incursions could seemingly be a trump card to bend universes to his will. His variant has already shown the wherewithal to control timelines under the guise of the Time Variance Authority (TVA), pruning alternate timelines. A more evil-intentioned Kang could destroy multiple universes on a whim.

Kang’s multitude of lives across time and space has given him ample time to learn and cultivate the mysteries of the universe. An example of this is shown in his variant’s weaponizing of Alioth. While the Mad Titan uses brute force and militant tactics to achieve his goals, Kang lurks in the shadows, often conquering empires without force. His ability to travel through time and space is terrifying for his enemies as he can alter the course of history without engaging in a battle. A past version of Thanos was able to cross into a different timeline, but only because of the interference of the Avengers. A version of Kang has been monitoring the timeline without anyone even knowing.

It is still unknown how Kang manages to traverse the multiverse. So far, only new MCU hero America Chavez in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has shown the ability to cross the multiverse of her own volition easily. During the finale of Loki season 1, “He Who Remains” illustrates himself walking through a door-like portal, similar to the one the TVA uses, when he describes meeting his variants. Unlike America, Kang must have created some sort of technology that allows him to travel. His appearance in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania might hint that the Quantum Realm holds the key to his mode of travel. Perhaps the villain has a more advanced version of the time machine used in Avengers: Endgame, which will help to prove him far more powerful and more terrifying than Thanos.

TV/Movies / ‘the Gray Man’ Ending Explained: Is Six A Free Man? by hdmovieplug(m): 11:48am On Jul 26, 2022

The Gray Man Plot Synopsis

The Gray Man, the latest movie from The Russo Brothers, stars Ryan Gosling as Six (real name Courtland Gentry), who works as an operative for the CIA, taking out any bad guy they consider a threat using his specialist set of skills.

At the beginning of the movie, Gentry is in prison, having been incarcerated there after killing his abusive father. One day, he is visited by Donald Fitzroy, the head of the CIA, who offers Six freedom. Well, freedom of a sorts, as Fitzroy promises Gentry a life outside of a prison cell if he comes to work for the CIA as a black ops agent.

Presumably sick of prison food and large men with tattoos, Gentry agrees and is then trained by the CIA to be the killer they need him to be. Gentry then becomes Six, an operative for the ‘Gray Man’ program.

Unfortunately, a life with the CIA is not one that guarantees freedom. Not only is Six under the agency’s control but at the end of the movie, there is the chance that he might have to go back to prison.

Does Six ever become a free man? Let’s take a closer look at the movie.

Does Six enjoy working for the CIA?

We don’t know if Six enjoys his work but he is certainly very good at what he does. Near the beginning of the movie, we join him 18 years after his recruitment, as he takes down his latest target. At this point, Fitzroy has now retired and in his place is Denny Carmichael (Regé-Jean Page) who speaks to Six through his earpiece during his latest mission.

Carmichael doesn’t trust Six as he considers ‘The Grey Man’ program to be outdated and he lets his feelings known to his co-worker, Suzanne Brewer (Jessica Henwick) who is with him as he gives orders to the agent.

We watch as Six carries out his mission with ruthless efficiency but regardless of whether he enjoys his work or not, his life is suddenly turned upside down when he learns of his target’s identity. It turns out the man is Four, another ‘Gray Man,’ and before he dies, he gives Six a thumb drive that contains evidence of the CIA’s decision to close the ‘Gray Man’ program by murdering those they once recruited.

Is Six the next Gray Man on the agency’s hit list?

Unfortunately, yes! Carmichael is behind the decision to bump off the agents on the ‘Gray Man’ program and, after learning that Six has the incriminating thumb drive, he hires an outside assassin named Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans) to hunt him down.

To get to his man, Hansen kidnaps Claire, Fitzroy’s niece, as a bargaining chip to make the former CIA head contact Six to learn of his location. Fitzroy does make contact but when Six learns that Claire has been abducted, he sets out to rescue the girl that he once formed a close bond with.

Does Hansen catch up with Six?

With the help of another CIA agent, Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas), Six is able to find Claire and Fitzroy at a mansion and he rescues them both. But before they all have the opportunity to get away, Hansen catches up with the rogue agent and overpowers him.

Fitzroy sacrifices himself in an attempt to kill Hansen with an explosive but his attempt fails and Hansen survives. The killer then kidnaps Claire again and drags her off into a hedge maze.

Six pursues them and thankfully doesn’t spend hours of his life walking around the tricky confines of the maze! After catching up with his foe, there is a standoff between him and Hansen and moments later, Hansen is killed.

However, Six isn’t the person who disposes of the assassin. Suzanne Brewer suddenly turns up, shoots Six in the leg and fatally shoots Hansen. She tells Six that she is going to pin Carmichael’s actions on Hansen, thus clearing herself and her shady boss of any wrongdoing.

She then tells Six that she is going to send him back to prison but that she will “let him play out sometimes” when she needs his services as a hit man. She also tells him Claire will be looked after by the CIA provided Six does as she asks.

Does Six go to prison?

That was the plan but after a stay in a high-security hospital with his wounded leg, Six escapes. He then travels to the house where Claire is being held by the CIA, shoots the guards who are holding her under house arrest, and rescues the girl.

Is Six a free man?

Six can be considered a free man as he is no longer under the constraints of the CIA and he has managed to avoid another stay in prison.

As to where he ends up after rescuing Claire, nobody knows but one thing is for sure, Carmichael will be keen to capture or dispose of Six before the former agent reveals details of his murderous plot to wipe out the agents of the ‘Gray Man’ program. Therefore, Six might be free now but he might not be free of the CIA forever!

Celebrities / Y’all Are Really Kids - Omah Lay Shades Victony & Ruger by hdmovieplug(m): 4:05pm On Jul 15, 2022

There seems to be some sort of heat among new-generation Nigerian artistes as jabs have been thrown from one artiste to the other in a rather controversial manner.

It all started when 22-year-old Michael Adebayo Olayinka, popularly known as Ruger caused a stir on social media with a tweet where he declared that he is better than all his peers and more specifically, Buju now known as BNXN.

Ruger had engaged his fans in a Question & Answer session where a Twitter user asked if his boss, D’Prince is aware that BNXN is better than him (Ruger).

Ruger didn’t let the comment slide, as in response, he shared a screenshot of a conversation he had with D’Prince where he acknowledged that “Ruger is nobody’s mate.”

However, a fan with the handle @BNXN001 took to the comment section to write;

Lol bnxn is better than you and there’s nothing you can do about it you this low budget Samuel L Jackson

Ruger’s response to this user, is what has now caused a stir on social media. He tweeted,

I love buju he’s good but he’s not better than me. Everything I’ve done since the beginning was only RUGER. All my hits are JUST RUGER. I’m always proud going on stage around the world with my own hits and everyone is singing along. You see the difference?

In light of the controversy, Stanley Omah Didia better known as Omah Lay seems to have come to BNXN’s side as in a new tweet, he outed Ruger and in the same tweet, threw a jab at fellow singer, Victony where he referred to both artistes as kids.

His tweet reads,

Ruger get mind dey talk about bnxn like that for this app smh!! mofos do anything for clout out here, same way Victony lol my tweet the other time, y’all are really kids

Crime / General Overseer Allegedly Rapes Female Pastor Twice In Lagos by hdmovieplug(m): 9:18am On Jun 09, 2022

The founder of a church in Lagos State, identified only as Bishop Daniels, has been accused of raping an assistant female pastor at his house in the Lekki area of the state.

It was gathered from the victim that Daniels, who is married with children, allegedly raped her on two separate occasions, adding that she bled during the incident.

The victim, who was based outside Lagos, was summoned to the Lagos headquarters of the church where the incident happened.

She said,

“He wanted me to attend a meeting and the date clashed with my brother’s wedding. So, I didn’t attend the meeting and as punishment, he ordered church members at my branch not to celebrate my birthday and instructed me to report to the church’s headquarters in Lagos for punishment.

“So, I went to his house in Lekki for the punishment and when I got there, he said I should strip naked because he wanted to beat me. He was alone at home. He saw that I was shocked at his statement and started making me feel guilty.

“He said his spiritual father tested him in many areas and after hours of contemplating, he became angry that I disobeyed him. So, I went into the guest room, took off my clothes and closed my eyes as I came out to meet him. He told me not to close my eyes, and ordered me to kneel as he sat on a chair.

“He saw my unclothedness and said he wanted to test my loyalty and was not having sex with me. He told me to put my clothes back and after wearing them, he told me to take them off again and I did. He later told me to go and not tell anyone, but after leaving his place, I told some of our senior church members.”

The victim said she returned home and after some time, Daniels called her to report at his residence over another incident.

She said,

“So, while at his house, he told me he would punish me for an offence and said I should transcribe the messages in one of his teachings. The next day, the pastor of the branch in Ibadan and his wife whom I met at his residence the previous day left, so I was alone in the house with Bishop Daniels.

“So, while in the sitting room with him, he attempted to kiss me and I stopped him; then he slapped me. He was angry and said the last time he told me to go naked, he didn’t do anything with me. So, he left and I went into the room to sleep.

“The following day, we were in the sitting room listening to a pastor’s message when he said I should go naked again. I did, and surprisingly, he also went naked and raped me for about 30 minutes till I started bleeding because of the tears I sustained despite not being a virgin.

“The incident happened around 10pm; I was dumbfounded. He told me to go inside the room to clean up myself and before I returned, he had cleaned up the blood on the floor. He told me not to tell anyone, but I told a pastor in my church.”

The victim said Daniels did not allow her to leave his house, adding that when he attempted raping her the following night, she pleaded with him that she was tired.

The 22-year-old said,

“In the morning, I greeted him, but he didn’t answer. Later, he started saying I should be privileged that he had that kind of thing with me. All of a sudden, he took off my clothes and raped me again and I still bled the second time. It was traumatic for me.

“He told me to go to the bathroom to wash and he cleaned the blood before I came out. I picked up my phone, informed the pastor of my branch and another church member of our branch, who decided to come to the pastor’s house.

“Bishop Daniels started begging me and said he never knew what came over him. When the church member came, I wanted to follow her out to tell her the story, but he prevented me from leaving the house. I later left his house but while thinking about the incident, I felt suicidal.

“I stopped going to the church and my branch has been closed down. I reported the incident to the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Alagbon, in 2020. But the investigating police officer, one inspector Samuel, told me to bring N70,000 if I wanted him arrested.

“I did not have that money and had to stop going to the station. Bishop Daniels started sending people to beg me, but I just moved on. Recently, two other victims reached out to me that Bishop Daniels attempted to have sex with them and I got someone ready to sponsor my case.

“So, I instituted the case again last month at the FCID Alagbon and he was arrested last week. I want justice, but the police have yet to charge him to court even after I gave them all my evidence, including how he was threatening me over the case and how his wife was begging me.”

Contacted to get his reaction regarding the victim’s allegations, Daniels said, “I don’t know or have any pastor with the name you gave me. If you want to publish an article, I will be glad to make money.”

However, in one of the audio recordings the victim sent to our correspondent, the bishop was heard telling her that they should commit sin together.

In another audio, the victim was heard crying as she challenged the bishop for telling someone that she wanted sex with him and he did it.

Responding, Daniels, in the audio said, “Don’t say that to anybody, I have not even been talking to anybody.”

A spokesperson for the FCID, Niyi Ogundeyi, said following the complaint of the victim, Daniels was arrested and detained for six days.

He said,

“The case was initially reported in 2020, but the complainant said the case was not properly handled and it was referred to Supol Yemi. Bishop Daniels was arrested and detained for six days. Afterwards, he was released because he is entitled to bail and the police have no right to detain him perpetually.

“Meanwhile, investigation is ongoing and an appointment has been given to all parties to visit the command on Thursday. The allegation against him is that he sexually harassed her and other people corroborated the evidence of the complainant. Investigation is ongoing.”

TV/Movies / Movie Review: Bimbo Oshin, Lateef Adedimeji’s Acting In ‘strangers’ Movie by hdmovieplug(m): 4:13pm On May 02, 2022

From the beginning of the Nollywood movie Strangers, you will likely fall in love with the movie. The transition from the voice over to the first scene is the first sign that the film wouldn’t be a disappointment. Did the whole film do justice to the first scene or not? We’ll find out here.

Strangers is the story of a young man, Ade (Adedimeji Lateef), who went through really tough times in life as a young boy until he finished university. Ade is the second child of a struggling mother (Bimbo Oshin), and he had a terrible leg infection that refused to go after so many years. The disease kept growing and smelling until some evangelists went into the town to minister.

Thankfully for Ade, after the evangelists put up his story, a strange woman outside the country decided to help him through his surgery and get back on his feet. Not only time, she decided to send Ade to school many years later.

Ade started schooling at the age of 13, but despite the frustration, he decided he would finish school and become a medical doctor. Unfortunately for Ade, his dream was cut short when his benefactor died, and the money she left could only take him through secondary school.

Did Ade give up on his dreams at this point? Did he struggle his way through the University? Did he derail in the University?

The storyline and Plot of Strangers prove that you don’t have to add too many twists to tell a beautiful story. The story is simple, straightforward and with a strong message. If you think you are great at predicting movies, the subtle twists in the film will make you question your predictable prowess. Also, the title was a great choice, and the connection between the title and the actual movie shows the writer didn’t pick a title; a thought process went into it. By not doing too much, the writer made a good drama, and if you are a fan of drama, then Strangers will blow your mind.

Once again, Biodun Stephens has proven she is a beautiful director with the directing of “Strangers”. Her selection of actors is close to perfect, and the progression of the movie and even the emphasis she places on characterization are applaudable. One proof of that was making sure Ade couldn’t walk well till the end of the film – it shows how particular she must have been about characterization, and that is one quality of a good director. One question, though is; what happened to the Kylie’s daughter? Why did you blank out that character without explaining it to your audience?

Every actor in Strangers deserves applause because even those who had just a single scene embodied their role just like the main cast. Once again, the selection of actors is commendable. Bimbo Oshin and Adedimeji are actors who will make you have goosebumps with the way they interpret emotions. Peter Fatomilola will always be a respected actor, and seeing him on the screen once again in all his charisma was amazing. Taiwo Ibikunle is one actor who should feature in movies more often because he understands his craft, I must say, and Bolaji Ogunmola that lady puts her all into acting. For the young men who acted Ade, their acting was admirable. Other actors like Bimbo Akintola and Debbie Felix also did excellent jobs.

The choice of song in Strangers will give you goosebumps. Each song resonates with each part of the movie, and it heightens the movie’s emotions. It is a good one.

In all, Strangers is a beautiful movie, and it will be getting a 10/10

TV/Movies / Uncharted (2022) Movie Review by hdmovieplug(m): 10:40pm On Apr 25, 2022

How is a movie based on a video game more soulless than the game itself? The knock against the world of gaming has long been that they lack a human element, but Ruben Fleischer’s “Uncharted” feels emptier than the award-winning franchise on which it’s based. Dominated by green screen special effects and thin treasure-hunt plotting, “Uncharted” fundamentally lacks the sense of adventure that turned the Sony games into some of the most beloved of all time. What’s most startling is how much the games themselves feel more cinematic in terms of world building, character, and narrative than the actual movie. It’s not quite as disastrous as some video game adaptations, and it’s at least light enough on its feet to never insult the intelligence of its fan base as so many of these movies tend to do. However, “Uncharted” seems to want to ride the goodwill of the video game adventures of Nathan Drake more than create any of its own; it takes no risks and feels like a bare minimum effort in terms of storytelling. Roger famously said that video games can never be art. The ones on which this movie is based are certainly more artistic.

Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) was conceived as a throwback to Indiana Jones and the serial adventure films that inspired him. He should be a smooth-talking treasure hunter, someone who exists in a slightly gray moral area wherein stealing priceless artifacts is warranted because no one else can really appreciate them like Drake. Holland has the agility but quite simply lacks the weight and world-weariness needed for a character like Drake, who was raised in an orphanage and is willing to steal to make ends meet. If Indiana was typically the smartest person in a room, Drake needs to be the one with the sharpest instincts, someone who sees the puzzles of history from a place of expertise and courage. Holland is a smart actor, but he’s just wrong here, always looking a little bit like a kid dressing up as his favorite video game character.

While working at a bar and stealing jewelry from his patrons, Drake is approached by Victor Sullivan aka Sully (Mark Wahlberg), who tells him that he got close to one of the most famous lost treasures in history with Nathan’s brother Sam. They stole the diary of the famous explorer Juan Sebastian Elcano, which will guide them to treasure that was hidden by the Magellan expedition. They quickly cross paths with Santiago Moncada (an Antonio Banderas so underutilized that one has to believe half his part was cut), the heir to the family that funded the original expedition. Moncada’s will is enforced by the tough Jo Braddock (Tati Gabrielle) and the boys reunite with an old colleague of Sully’s in Barcelona named Chloe Frazier (Sophia Ali, who pretty much steals the movie).

“Uncharted” bounces these characters off each other on a journey to Spain and the Philippines, but nothing has any weight to it. It’s green screen performing that ignores how much setting can matter in a film like this one. Design never once feels like a consideration, whether Nathan and Chloe are crawling through a nondescript tunnel to hidden treasure or Sully is getting into one of the few fight scenes in an actual Papa John’s. A film like “Uncharted” needs to transport audiences. We need to go on the journey, not just watch actors pretend to fall out of planes. The “Uncharted” games take players around the world. You’ll never once get that feeling during this cold, distant adventure film.

If anything saves “Uncharted” from the depths of the worst video game adaptations, it’s the relative charm of the cast. Holland may be miscast, but he’s just an incredibly likable movie star, and I hope he can find parts that better utilize his charms. Wahlberg creates a nice balance between his charisma and the exhausted tone of a treasure hunter who has seen and done enough, and just wants that final gig that can set him up for life. Banderas is wasted and Gabrielle is inconsistent, but Ali is arguably the one performer who gets that “Uncharted” should be fun. She gives the film some much-needed energy and unpredictability when she’s on-screen.

“Uncharted” is another one of those projects that has been through so many potential production teams over the years that it lost its identity. There are reports going back to 2008 about different filmmakers trying to get this movie made and David O. Russell, Neil Burger, Joe Carnahan, Shawn Levy, Dan Trachtenberg, and Travis Knight were all rumored or even attached at different points. When a project goes through so many iterations over the years, it can often lead to a final film that feels like a compromise, a watered-down version that took the most common, most basic elements of everything that had been suggested over the years. “Uncharted” checks boxes for fans and newbies but does so in such a predictable manner that it lacks any edge or spark. I’ve played through some of the “Uncharted” games from beginning to end more than once, a multiple-hour commitment. It may only take two to watch it, but I’ll probably never see this movie again.
