You still don't get it.
It is relative.
I can keep dividing it till it gets smaller then maybe you will get the big picture.
While it is true that only a fraction of Nigerians can get a 3m per month job, then let's go further down.
A man earning $1000 in Nigeria is better than $3000 in Toronto.
Still very hard to get a $1000 job in Nigeria.
A man earning $500 in Nigeria is better than a man earning $1500 in Toronto.
Now, $500 job is not uncommon in Nigeria in some sectors.
Let's go further down.
A man earning $250 in Nigeria roughly 400k will live a better life than a man earning $750 in Toronto.
Infact from $1,500 downward in Toronto, you live will start becoming miserable but you can't say the equivalent in Nigeria.
mtcheew see this one. who earns $750 in toronto even beggers earn above that. you're comparing bank manager salary to a less than beggers salary. a city where teachers in toronto easily pocket $5k plus other employement benefits.

franchasofficia:
My point is, acquiring a family residential house abroad via mortgage is not something any sensible person should broadcast or brag about. And if you must tell such story, please be honest enough to say it as it is that "you just acquired a mortgage house" so that Nigerians in Nigeria will not be deceived into thinking that Bose, Emeka, Tijani, Nnamdi have acquired a 100% purchased house in US or UK just as it's done in Nigeria, before they go and commit suicide out of envy not knowing that Emeka ati Tijani has mortgaged his income for the next 25 years or something cheesy

And my final point is meant for married Nigerian men abroad. Don't acquire a mortgaged home abroad except you have invested well in Nigeris, e get why grin
you sound like someone who is jealous or full of hate. are you saying it's impossible for a nigerian couple to fully own a house in uk so only in nigeria they can own a house?

i guess you're the one who wants to commit suicide of envy, you'e fooled yourself into thinking people go abroad to suffer. hehe, you can go ahead and kill yourself no one is stopping you. tongue
TravelRe: Nigerian Couple Buys A House 2 And Half Years Of Moving To UK. by headboyprince(m): 7:48am On Apr 27, 2024
franchasofficia:
Most of you guys are misinterpreting and misunderstanding people's criticisms of this story which most Nigerians love to tell without details just to make people feel that they are now big.

Yes they are better now paying mortgage than paying rent, but they should not make it look like they now own a house in the UK 100% when it's actually a mortgage house.

Say it as it is:

We have got our mortgage house after 3 years in UK or US or Canada and nobody will question or criticize you, but coming out with the bragging title: "we now own a house" when it's actually a mortgage house is deceit.

A lot of Nigerians (business owners mostly) can afford to buy outrightly, a detached or semi detached duplex in the UK, US, Canada or any other western country if not for certain factors.

Mortgage houses favor married women abroad than men, so any Nigerian married man abroad hurrying to get a mortgage house when he hasn't acquired enough properties and investments in Nigeria and in other African countries is nothing but a fool that will leave to regret it sooner or later. Only married Nigerian ladies abroad celebrate mortgage house, real Nigerian married men abroad don't celebrate such feat unless they have invested enough back home, it's not a wise decision for a married Nigerian man to do, unless your wife is working and ready to contribute 50% or more for the mortgage.

Houses are costlier in highbrow areas in Nigeria than it is in US, UK, Canada, etc.

The money used to buy just 1 plot of land in Lekki phase 1 will buy a semi detached duplex in Houston, Birmingham, Dallas, Atlanta, Halifax, etc.

The money used to buy a plot of land in Ikoyi or Banana Island will buy a celebrity mansion in most US, UK, etc cities.

Many Nigerian business owners are richer and financially better (without stress) than most Nigerians abroad, but the issue in Nigeria is the recent level of insecurity and inflation brought upon Nigerians by useless Buhari government and continued by Tinubu's stolen regime angry

If not for insecurity, nothing would have made me to live outside Nigeria permanently, unless they will make me President of that foreign country angry

If not for insecurity and high inflation in Nigeria now, anybody that owns his own successful business in Nigeria is far better off living in Nigeria than migrating abroad to do 5/9.

Imagine if $1 = NGN250, and £1 = NGN310, tell me why someone that makes a profit of between NGN700,000 to NGN2,500,000 monthly should relocate abroad? Talk more of those that make above 2.5million monthly after expenses without stress or worries?

In as much as I encourage young Nigerians of today to relocate abroad if they see an opportunity to leave legally, let's not make it seem like those back home are in horrible state when in reality, most in Nigeria are doing far better than those abroad legitimately.

Na insecurity and Naira depreciation by useless APC led governments since 2015 destroyed Nigeria and made it hopeless angry angry
nah whats the point youre trying to drive. you're just using if this, if that. while you're even living abroad. huh

How many people had telephones (landline) back then?

So if you wanted to see a business partner on the Island, you will ENTER MOLUE with heavy go-slow of 3 hrs before you reach Island, and when you reach your guy's office, they will tell you he has travelled! grin

Back to Molue for return journey to mainland. Whole day wasted.

Does that happen today? NO.

You will call to confirm. Simple thing.

And before you credit 'technology', remember that in developed countries, EVERYBODY had a landline telephone back then.

NemoDatQuod:
I came to this party late. But I have some data that may help.

Let's not use London vs Lagos so that Lagos does not start shedding un-mitigatable tears. Let's compare Lagos with Birmingham, the UK's second largest city.
1. House rent for a lovely two bedroom apartment (see attached link to the advertised house. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/145672040#/media?id=media0&ref=photoCollage&channel=RES_LET) £775/month

2. Council Tax - Let's make it expensive at Band D £90/month

3. Electricity/Gas/water. again, let's be generous £200/month

4. Feeding for say a single guy or babe living on their own £200/month

5. Flenjure - Goes out once a week @ £50/outing £200/month

6. Transport £60

7. Total £1,525

So, he or she still has £475/month to save every month x N1,603 as at today's rate = N761,425. But you that is earning N200K you are better off than him or her in Birmingham? Ogaa oo! After paying all his bills and spending money on "flenjure", he still has near four times of that your total N200K a month. We will not even bother trying to talk about the slaves you acquire as driver and or house maid. We do not pay people as slaves and or treat them as slaves over here. So, we are happy for you guys to continue with your slavery business. Someone here wrote that he pays his house help(sorry , slave) N4K/month and he said with his full chest. Mtchew

But the greatest fallacy in Onyema's desperate, bare faced lie is that he has made Nigerians out to be low level unskilled workers struggling in the UK. I don't know about those who have been arriving these past couple of years to do care work, but I personally know many Nigerians who are real big boys in this country and this city of London. Boys and girls who are professionals in various fields going home with £10K after tax every month. But let's be kind and make it just £8K after tax every month. That means his or her savings every month is at least £6K X N1,603 = N9,618,000, while you with your N200K a month is better?

Ok. Let's make it that he or she makes only £4k a month after tax and spends even say £2K a month on the expenses listed above. It is still £2K X N1,603 = in fact, let me leave you to do the arithmetic and comparison.

Onyema can lie from Saudi Arabia to Australia for all he wants, just because he knows that all the man in Aso Rock need do is send him on a trip to the USA and he will not be seen or heard from again for thirty or more years while he pays his debt to that society, in what we here call "at His Majesty's Pleasure". But there is one simple truth : a society that has cannibalised every single indicea for human living, from education, to how we relate with one another, to infrastructure, to the well being of children, to the protection of women etal, is a doomed society. There is no remedy for such a society where corruption is the most dominant component in its economic model, if not the only component.

Finally, those who say that education is scam, are those who have resigned themselves to failure. We are here and balling because of education. It wasn't the very best of education given that you cannot give what you do not have, as we all experienced in Naija universities. But when you are determined and you read beyond your near illiterate lecturer with a PhD, and you remain focused and know the time to work hard and the time to "flenjure" hard too, you will ultimately succeed. But first, you must define what true success means.

Tip: success has nothing to do with money. Money as a barometer for success is only what greedy people put in their own minds.
they don't understand all these. They still have slavery mentality. grin

How many Nigerians are sure of their next meal?

There are over 71 million Nigerians in poverty

These people are not sure of their next meal, so what business do they have with a bag of rice?

Their business is with one or half cup of rice.

The fact that you are living well does not mean that many Nigerians are.
lol so you're saying a family of 4 will feed on one cup of rice per day.? shocked do you know one cup is equivalent to one plate. A normal adult can finish 2 plate at a go. That's equivalent to 2 cups.

But using bag of rice as a metric is a poor measure

It would be better to use a cup of rice

Use a unit that people consume per day and not sth that stretches out over months.

.Many people in Nigeria have never bought a bag of rice in their lifetime..make we dey tell ourselves the truth
lol I see your brain is too small to comprehend facts. So let me break it down simple. a family of four needs about 6-7 cups per day on average. 3 cups is nothing.

1 bag is only 288 cups. Now do the maths 288/6= 48 days.

How many bags of rice does one buy in a year?

That is the question to answer

On average, a family of four eating three cups of rice in a day no go finish one bag of rice in six months.

If you know this maths, solution is to buy food in bulk and store once you got the money to do so.
family of 4 lol. That's assuming they only eat rice everyday once per day. It won't reach 2 months. Feeding isvery expensive now.

In Nigeria you can own houses and fleet of cars but in UK it's not like that as you'd be questioned to explain how you make your wealth and if it's discovered that you've been evading tax, you're finished.

UK would turn a generous man to a stingy man in a space of time because UK mentality believes that nothing is free.

bro all this things you're mentioning are not needed. they say nigeria earns $76 as minimum wage, i just close the site. there is no correlation between population and minimum wage.

all those with more population than us all have better minimum wage, lower unemployment rates and lastly higher standard of living.

poverty leads to overpopulation not the other way round. or are you saying that those with high mimum wage have low population and vice versa...?

gambia is only 2.5 million but earn low wages than south africa with 50 million. nigeria population skyrocketed in recent years. as the poverty grew so did the popluation. it grows at a rapid rate yearly. this isnt the same for some advanced countries.

I don't know why some of you reason like illiterates despite that you have internet by your side. By your logic a country with high population should have high minimum wage. Do China and India have the largest minimum wages ? No, small counties like Finland and Belgium has higher minimum wages than China and India. India has similar minimum wage as Nigeria, Belgium with the third highest minimum wage is not up to Lagos in population (11+m). Small countries like Belgium, Netherlands , Ireland's has higher minimum wages than US. So, get educated, a family with 2 children with likely live better than a family with 10children because of their lower liabilities. The highest poverty in Nigeria is in the north today because of their many almajiri children.
see you're the pure illiterate here, bringing family comparison. Obi Cubana has 5 kids so are you better than him with your 0 kids. ?

Google it, the Us have far more higher minimum wage than Finland, and Belgium and Netherlands.

And no India have far more minimum wage than Nigeria. Theirs is around $200. Nigeria is just $20.

All those with higher population all earn more. Let's not even talk of infrastructure

Claiming that the population causes low minimum wage is one of the stupidest thing ever. Somalia Is only 17 million but earn lowest minimum wage than nigeria. Georgia same thing with only 10 million.

And what’s the population of Ghana?
The higher the population of a country the higher the criminalities, insecurities and high handed and high level political and economic saboteurs. 8 years is too much to make a powerful cartel to form, operate and have a well grounded formation. Let alone a country that’s raised criminals since 1999. It will take years for serious govt and it’s successors to clear the mess to a reasonable level.

Corruption thrives in Nigeria because of everyone, no exclusion. People that we trust so much even got to positions and still misbehave.

People trusted Adeleke of Osun so much. What’s he doing in that state today?

Even the one that’s doing well while there will be bastardized, talked down at and still not being given his flowers. I remember how much people abused Obj,Gej and Yaradua.

Anyone who knows how and the reasons each government was toppled during military era will understand what politics and citizens are.

Nigeria needs tested leaders like Mimiko of Ondo.

People want Nigeria to be like America but an average individual don’t think like an American. Is it not an individual that will find himself or herself in the position of power?
so why other countries with larger population dont suffer the things you mention anywhere close to Nigeria. huh i dont know what you have to defend that....?
