Barcelona was always dominating teams in ball possession so Mascherano was still doing a defensive midfield work because they were playing high line defense. Bousquet was there to play a simple pass to xavi most times, he is a definition of carry along player.

A defensive midfielder that is been shielded by another defensive midfielder so that he can play his basic pass to xavi. In Spanish national team, Alonso was the one shielding him and defense and in Barcelona it was Yaya and then Mascherano.
