Religion / Pastor In Prison Over Fake Prophecy by herbscure02(m): 3:19pm On Jan 08, 2014
The founder and General Overseer of Faith Alive Christian Centre located at 43, Dada Olowu Street,  Abule Taylor,  in Abule Egba, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, has been sent to prison for allegedly giving false prophecy to a member of his church.

P.M.NEWS learnt that Pastor Obi Ofoedu, who hails from Abatete in Idemili Local Government in Anambra State, was a clearing agent before he claimed that he had a call from God three years ago to establish the church.

The pastor landed in trouble during the church service after he claimed that he received a divine vision that his church member, Mrs Favour Okafor, would face calamity in her place of work and she can only avert the impending doom if she comes to the church for special prayers.

Mrs. Okafor said she disregarded the prophecy and challenged the pastor for giving her a false prophecy.

She told the pastor that he did not receive the vision from God and nothing bad would happen to her.

This infuriated the pastor who allegedly said that she would be inflicted with stroke and illnesses for doubting his prophecy.

Mrs. Okafor narrated that she left the church in anger and went to report to the police at  Idimu Area ‘M’ Command that Pastor Ofoedu was threatening her life.

When Pastor Ofoedu was arrested, he denied the allegation.

He told the police that he only gave Mrs. Okafor the message he received from God but she was not comfortable with it.

He added that he cannot retract the message because he was only a messenger of God, saying that the complainant should not attend his church if she does not like the vision.

The pastor was subsequently charged to court for conduct likely to cause breach of peace by threatening Mrs.Okafor with illness.

Pastor Ofoedu  pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The presiding magistrate, Mr P.E. Nwaka, granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He was remanded in prison custody pending when he will perfect his bail conditions

Politics / You Can Now Pay Cash Into Your Account At Any Bank by herbscure02(m): 7:13pm On Jan 07, 2014
A big relief to Nigerian bank customers: you no longer need to reach your bank to deposit cash. You can now pay into any bank and the money will be credited into your account, just like you withdraw cash from any bank’s ATM.

The new deal has been made possible by BeyondBranches, owner of the payment platform QuickTeller, a value added service platform developed by Interswitch, the largest integrated payment processing service provider in Nigeria.

Now, BeyondBranches has developed the payment ecosystem further by enabling any customer to deposit cash into any bank account held at any bank in Nigeria at an agent. Using this approach, BeyondBranches has been able to bring the bank within easy reach of those who need to deposit cash quickly and securely.

Simon Aderinlola, chief operating officer of BeyondBranches in Nigeria, said: “We are excited to make life easier for bank’s customers. The cost of transportation, the time wasted due to the traffic in Nigeria’s towns and cities and the queues within bank branches have made life difficult for the people of the country. Instead, customers of any bank can now go to a Quickteller agent and deposit funds into any bank account in Nigeria.”

Mrs Titilola Shogaolu, Chief Payment and Value Added Services Officer of Interswitch Nigeria said: “
“Interswitch explores different opportunities to provide solutions that support the Cashless society drive of the CBN while also delivering a financially included Nigerian population. As such, BeyondBranches have integrated their platform and growing agent network into our platform to build a secure and highly scalable agency banking infrastructure in Nigeria, enabling Banks and other key players in the industry bring financial services closer to their customers in a secure manner. We are excited about the potential services that can be enabled with this infrastructure.”

Gregory Ubigen, chief executive officer of BeyondBranches International said: “The cash-deposit at an agent is an exciting new service that helps drive transactions to agents. By continually adding new services quickly, we can help drive branchless banking and digital inclusion in Nigeria. We hope to continue to support the Central Bank of Nigeria’s policies on financial inclusion.”

BeyondBranches International Limited was founded in London, UK in March 2013 with a mission to build robust, secure, active and engaged agent networks globally.

BeyondBranches Nigeria was setup in May 2013 to support the cashless, agency banking and mobile payment initiatives running in that country. BeyondBranches is underpinned by a flexible, secure platform and scalable processes to enable Banks and other organizations to effectively leverage the network to bring services to their customers efficiently.

Politics / Lagos Bus Drivers Shun Registration by herbscure02(m): 5:11pm On Jan 07, 2014
At least 90,000 commuter bus drivers and conductors have shunned Lagos State Government’s capturing of their data.

The government had issued a 60-day ultimatum for all commuter bus owners, drivers and conductors to register with the government or cease to operate as from 1 January, 2014, but the bus drivers and conductors have defied government’s order and have continued to carry on with their business as usual.

Across the metropolis, the bus drivers and their conductors have shunned the registration centres.

There is also no form of enforcement of the ultimatum as threatened by the Lagos State Government. The government had warned that that enforcement would begin as from 1 January, 2014.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Kayode Opeifa, had vowed that any driver who failed to register would cease to operate in the state at the expiration of the ultimatum.

On Monday, State Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, led at least 100 members of the union to the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute, LASDRI, to register.

Chief Executive Officer, CEO, LASDRI, Mr. Ayodeji Oyedokun, said no bus driver or conductor had shown up at the institute to have their data captured since two months ago when the exercise kicked off.

He said the database at the institute was that of 70,000 professional drivers certified by the institute and that these included company drivers.

“They have not started coming for accreditation. We have only received 700 Keke Marwa operators that came here to register, but the bus drivers and their conductors have not shown up for accreditation yet,” he said.

According to him, those who come for accreditation and had not yet undergone one day training to be certified and accredited before they could operate their business in Lagos.

Agbede, who went to the institute yeaterday for accreditation with some of his men, said the union fully supported government’s move to accredit all the bus drivers and conductors, saying that he had directed all his members to embark on the exercise.

“For those who have not done the accreditation, it gives me serious concern. We are asking or extension to enable our members get accreditation because our population is too much and the time given is short.

“It is now by force and by fire for our members to come here for accreditation. We are appealing to the government to give us two months more to accredit our members. They will all be registered. It is because of low turnout of our members for this exercise, that is why we are here,” he explained.

He added that if the two months extension asked for was not enough, the union could easily ask for more time to ensure that their over 100,000 members were duly accredited and registered.

@op, the tree was infront of pastors house and very close to church in olodo area of ibadan, I heard it too because I stayed in iyana church very closed to olodo and have seen it too, I will upload more pictures if I can be able to do it but if u continue to upload more pictures from today till jesus comes, those who will beliieve will believe it and those who will not believe it will not believe

Allah said in Quran that,
"We will show them Our Signs in the Universe and in their ownselves until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord do witness all things?" Q41:53

"Such are the Signs of Allah which We rehearse to thee in truth: then in what exposition will they believe after Allah and His Signs? Woe to each sinful liar, who hears the Signs of Allah rehearsed to him yet is obstinate and lofty as if he had not heard them: then announce to him a Penalty Grievous! And when he learns something of Our Signs he takes them in jest: for such there will be a humiliating Penalty." Q45:6-9

Religion / Jesus Was Born In October’ by herbscure02(m): 4:38am On Dec 24, 2013
MBANANE – While many prepare for Wednesday, which is Christmas day, thousands of other believers will not commemorate the day.
This is because they view it as non-Christian.

Christmas is celebrated on December 25 to remember the birth of Jesus Christ who is also considered the son of God in certain Christian teachings.
Religious groupings such as Jehovah’s Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists (SDA), Rastafarians as well as Muslims do not celebrate the day.
Though all the religions acknowledge the historical existence of Jesus, they say Christmas is a pagan activity.

Jehovah’s Witnesses who were interviewed said they did not celebrate the day as it was not biblical.
There are about 5 000 members of the Jehovah’s Witness movement in the country according to data obtained during their annual conferences usually held at Somhlolo stadium.

Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia, estimates that there are 7 400 Jehovah’s Witnesses’ members in the kingdom. “Nowhere in the Bible does it say Jesus was born on Christmas day,” said Moses Dludlu, a Jehovah’s Witness.
Dludlu said he had never celebrated Christmas. “We have always been advised that Christmas was introduced in the church by non-Christians,” he said.
He said there was no verse in the Bible which encouraged people to celebrate Jesus’ birth.

Dludlu said Jesus reminded his disciples to remember his death but did not say anything about remembering his birth. He said on December 25, Jehovah’s Witnesses continue with the work of spreading Jesus’ teachings. “We travel from door to door where we continue teaching His word,” said Dludlu.
He said even children also accompanied their parents so that they could learn the importance of not commemorating the day.
Dludlu said even children within this faith were taught to understand why Christmas was not celebrated.

He said children were encouraged to teach their friends so they understood why Jehovah’s Witnesses did not celebrate the day.
Bartholomew Mbuli, who is also a senior member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses church, said one needed to attend Bible lessons to understand why Christmas was not celebrated. “It’s is not something I can teach you in one session,” said Mbuli.

Mbuli said Jehovah’s Witnesses encouraged such teachings to create an environment in which any questions were answered.
Pastor David Donga, Ministerial Secretary of the Seventh Day Adventists in Swaziland, said Christmas was not recognised in the Bible.
Donga who is the Ministerial Secretary of the Church said he was speaking on behalf of Pastor Jacob Mhlanga, the President of SDA in the country. He said according to his knowledge of the Jewish calendar, Jesus was born in October.

Donga said Christians who celebrated Christmas should remember the poor, widows and orphans. He said this was the only way he could encourage people to remember Jesus.
Donga also said it was better to celebrate the death of Jesus as opposed to his birth.

He said on December 25, members of the SDA church usually spent time with their families. “We also invite neighbours so that we have lunch together,” said Donga.
He then revealed that there were about 7 000 Jehovah’s Witnesses in the country.

Imam Hammidulah Dlamini was reached for comment but he declined, referring questions to Luqman Mugenyasooka, the Imam at the Ezulwini Muslim Institute.
An Imam is a leader within the Islamic faith, similar to a priest among Christians. Mugenyasooka was not available when attempts were made to call him on his cellphone.

According to information obtained independently, the story of the birth of Christ is actually related in the Koran.
The Koran is the Muslim holy book similar to what Christians refer to as the Bible. Muslims also view Christmas as a non-religious activity, according to information sourced from Wikipedia.

Meanwhile, Amborse Zwane, who is a member of the Rastafarian movement, said his religion did not celebrate Christmas as Jesus could not have been born in December.
Rastafarianism or Rastafari movement is an African-based spiritual ideology that arose in the 1930s in Jamaica. It is sometimes described as a religion but its members consider it to be a `way of life.’

Zwane is also the Director at the Lubombo Community Radio as well as the Lubombo Community Multi-media Centre (LCMC)
Like Christians, Rastafarians also use the Bible as their holy book.
Zwane said according to the Bible, Angel Gabriel is said to have been sent to inform Mary, the mother of Jesus, about her miraculous pregnancy in June. He said if the angel arrived in June, Jesus should then have been born in March. “God could not have allowed Jesus to be born prematurely,” said Zwane.

Zwane also said biblically, birthday celebrations were when many Christians were persecuted.
He said the Bible spoke about John the Baptist who was beheaded during the birthday of the King’s daughters. Zwane said a lot of ungodly activities took place during Christmas. These include the slaughtering of animals. “A lot of blood is spilt during this period,” said Zwane.
He said on December 25, Rastafarians treat the day like any other day without celebrating it.

Pastor Jailed 20 Years For Raping Pregnant, Deaf Woman

A 38-year old pastor of the Abuakwa branch of Miracle House Ministry in the Ashanti Region, has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment with hard labour by the Tarkwa Circuit Court for raping a 19-year old deaf and dumb woman who is seven months pregnant.

Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Albert A. Adiita told the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Obeng Diawuo that on November 27, this year, the convict visited one Joshua Tetteh the Asankrangwa branch pastor of the Miracle House Ministry.

According to the prosecutor, on December 1, Osei Tutu went to Asankra-Saa for preaching and deliverance, and on December 3, the victim and her colleague Rita Adofo were passing by when the convict who was preaching called and informed them that Adofo will not live to celebrate the Christmas festivity and Arthur will also not have safe delivery.

DSP Adiita said Osei Tutu directed the two to his house for special prayers and deliverance.

He said when the victim and Adofo went to the house of the convict, he asked them separately to buy a bottle of voltic water and after praying on it Arthur claimed he put a medicine in it and asked her to drink it and use the remaining to take her bath.

The prosecutor said Osei Tutu asked the victim to offer some money as thanksgiving but Arthur who was not having money on her went home and returned with 20 Ghana cedis for the offertory.

DSP Adiita said when she got to the house the convict lured her into his room and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.

He said the victim reported the incident to Adofo and a report was made to the police after which the victim was issued with a medical report form.

The prosecutor said when the convict was arrested he denied the offence in his statement but the victim who testified in sign language in court said Osei Tutu raped her. DSP Adiita said after investigation he was charged with the offence.

Workers from Philippines, Nigeria, others in Qatar running low on food – Amnesty

DOHA (AFP) – Migrants who have worked for nearly a year without pay on a Qatar skyscraper are facing “severe food shortages” and cannot leave or seek other employment, Amnesty International said Wednesday.

Qatar has come under mounting criticism from rights groups, particularly after being chosen to host the 2022 World Cup, which has spotlighted the conditions of migrant workers in the gas-rich monarchy’s booming construction industry.

Amnesty urged Qatari authorities to address the plight of 80 migrant workers, mostly from Nepal, who are working for the Lee Trading and Contracting (LTC) company, saying they are “working in conditions that may amount to forced labour.”

“They have not been paid for nearly a year and can’t even buy food to sustain themselves on a day-to-day basis. They also can’t afford to send money back home to their families or to pay off debts,” said Salil Shetty, secretary general of Amnesty International.

The group includes around 60 Nepalese workers as well as others from Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Nigeria, China and Bangladesh.

They have been working on floors 38 and 39 of Doha’s Al-Bidda Tower, known as “Qatar’s Home of Football” because a number of sports organisations have offices there, Amnesty said.

Amnesty said it had seen documentation showing LTC owes the workers around 1.5 million riyals ($412,000, 300,000 euros) for the work, which was completed in October.

“‘Do the work and we’ll pay you tomorrow,’ they said,” Amnesty quoted a Nepalese labourer as saying.

“We kept doing the work and they kept changing the date and we never got paid.”

The rights group said the workers had filed cases against LTC in Doha’s Labour Court but were asked to pay fees of 600 riyals ($165) each for their cases to proceed.

The workers told Amnesty the court rejected their petitions for the fees to be waived, and Amnesty said under Qatari law they should have been exempted from the start.

Amnesty said the workers are facing severe food shortages after the company stopped giving them a 250-riyal ($69) monthly food allowance in October, and that last month several of the men complained of hunger.

Neither government spokesmen nor LTC representatives could be reached for comment on Amnesty’s findings.

But Amnesty quoted an LTC representative as saying that the food allowance had stopped because, “at the end of the day, I’m not making any money out of this company.”

Amnesty also cited a company representative as saying the firm was unable to pay for residency permits for the workers, leaving them vulnerable to arrest.

Because of Qatar’s restrictive sponsorship system, the workers are unable to seek employment at another company.

Qatar last month said foreign allegations of abuse of migrant workers working on World Cup facilities were “exaggerated” but insisted it took such claims seriously
