Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has vowed to arrest and prosecute Mr. Michael Ekundayo, an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, caught on video collecting N8,000 bribe from a motorist and is now on the run. The governor also banned children and others from skating on the highways, saying that anyone caught violating the order would be arrested and prosecuted according to the dictates of the law. Fashola, who spoke at the Blueroof Hall, Lagos Television Complex, Agidingbi in Ikeja, Lagos, western Nigeria on Tuesday before a gathering of professionals and respectable members of the society who constitute volunteers of the Special Traffic Mayors, also called for the abolishment of the Federal Housing Authority, FHA. The governor said the LASTMA official caught negotiating bribe inside a citizen’s car had brought disgrace to the outfit and would be hunted down and prosecuted. “I want to first salute the citizen that got the video of the LASTMA officer who was caught negotiating bribe inside a citizen’s car. We must all nail and shame him and we must all use that kind of medium to fish out all the bad eggs in the society and bring them to justice. “That LASTMA officer is still on the run and we have declared him wanted. I can assure you today that we will get him. And as soon as we do, we will give him all his rights and he will have his day in court,” he vowed. On skating, Fashola said he noticed that the youths had also taken to skating because the road is safe, saying government was not going to discourage them but that they should do that in designated places like recreation centres, stadia and others. “They cannot skate on the highways. It is a violation of the traffic law 2010. I implore all parents to call their children and their wards to order because any child found skating on the highway will be arrested and will be brought to justice. It must stop today. Skating on the highways has to stop now. The danger is too much and it is the responsibility of the government to safe lives,” he stated. On the position of the government concerning road development in FESTAC Town, Fashola explained that the state government was having an issue with the Federal government, pointing out that the taxes and land charges being collected by the FHA were being sent to Abuja. “I have said that the Federal Housing Authority is an anathema to the current constitution. The Federal Government does not own land, so, I don’t see how it can have a housing authority. But it was created during the military and now that we are in a civilian dispensation, as I made a case on Saturday when we were in Sokoto, this is one of the laws that the National Assembly should simply amend or repeal to bring them in conformity with the current dispensation,” he said. On LASTMA, the governor pointed out that its primary responsibility was to keep the state traffic moving, stressing that “this is the reason why the agency exists. Arresting traffic offenders is secondary. If making an arrest will increase the traffic, let the offenders go. I say this not because I don’t want law breakers to be apprehended and brought to justice. But law breakers cannot undermine our main objective. “The longer people stay more in traffic, the more money is wasted and fuel are burnt and when people stay more in traffic, this leads to increase in the price of goods in the state. But with a moving traffic, price of goods will be stable.” Fashola explained that the challenge of managing traffic in Lagos State necessitated the need for the meeting with the Special Traffic Mayors, while stressing the need to pay attention to road safety measures for the betterment of all. “Over the last few days, we have begun to experience traffic gridlock within the state. There are couples of factors that we all must be aware. We promised to address inner roads and at the moment we have commenced work on 200 inner roads in the state. It shouldn’t be surprising that the construction is causing traffic in the state because these are areas where people are already living especially on Joel Ogunnaike, Kodesho and others. “The access to those roads will definitely be impaired. That is part of the problem. Also, we are getting closer to the Christmas and New Year. At this time, there is heavy movement of people at the same time on the road,” he explained. http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/11/20/fashola-bans-skating-on-expressway/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PmNewsNigeriaFeed+%28PM+News+Nigeria%29 |

The Shell Petroleum Development Company has offered to pay N7.5 billion, about $50m to the indigenes of Bodo community, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers state, who were affected by an oil spill in 2008. A competent source close to Shell told the News Agency of Nigeria in Port Harcourt on Thursday that the offer was made at the ongoing settlement negotiations between the company and representatives of the community. The meeting is taking place in Port Harcourt. The source said that the company had made the proposal and was awaiting the response of the community’s representatives and their lawyers. Shell had accepted responsibility for the oil spill in 2008 which polluted the waterways of the fishing communities. The company, however, insisted that the volume of the spill and number of those who lost their means of livelihood were exaggerated. Shell’s spokesman, Mr Joseph Obari, said: “We took part in this week’s settlement negotiations with two objectives — to make a generous offer of compensation to those who have suffered hardship as a result of the two highly regrettable operational spills in 2008, and to make progress in relation to the cleanup. “We await the community’s response to our compensation proposal, and we’re pleased to have made progress in relation to the cleanup. “SPDC and the Bodo community have committed their full support for the cleanup process, currently in progress, with the support of Bert Ronhaar, the former Netherlands Ambassador to Nigeria,’’ he added. Obari said that Shell had also proposed a series of interim measures to begin the removal of oil from the area. “Of course, the success of any interim measures and final remediation depends on the cessation of oil theft and illegal refining in the area,” he said. He said that oil theft, which usually affected the environment, had remained the major cause of oil pollution in the Niger Delta. Meanwhile, some indigenes of Bodo community protested on Thursday about their exclusion from the ongoing negotiations with Shell. Their spokesman, Mr Eugene Odey, a lawyer, said that Shell was insincere in its efforts to deal with the majority of those affected by the 2008 oil spill http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/09/12/oil-spill-shell-offers-to-pay-nigerian-community-50m/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PmNewsNigeria+%28PM+News+Nigeria%29 |
ABUJA — The Presidency has denied media reports that it ordered 53 gold-plated iPhones to celebrate the country’s 53rd independence, saying the report is not only misleading but false and mischievous. A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, said the report was part of attempts by political opponents to discredit the Jonathan administration. The statement reads: “We consider the reports in a section of the media claiming that the Nigerian government had ordered customized gold iPhones from a Dubai-based company to mark the country’s 53rd independence anniversary in October as not only false and misleading, but utterly mischievous. “It is instructive that despite the refutation of the story by the company, which ought to have laid the mischief to rest, a number of politically-minded news media continue to insist on promoting the blatant falsehood. We deplore their antics as yet another attempt to use any trick or means possible to discredit President Jonathan’s well-meaning, hardworking and focused administration. “It is certainly a matter of public record and knowledge that since his assumption of office, President Jonathan has ensured that October 1 independence-day anniversaries are low-keyed, without any pomp or pageantry. Ironically, even this prudence generated criticisms from a cynical and opportunistic segment of the public which alleged in 2011, and again in 2012, that the President was either too scared to celebrate or that the government was broke. “This administration has no intention to depart from its established habit of prudent management of resources and modest celebration of the country’s independence. This year, the public should be assured that the October 1 anniversary will also be low-keyed. Neither the Federal Government nor its agencies has ordered any gold iPhones to mark the anniversary. “We do not see any justification for such extravagance either now or at any other time. The Jonathan administration’s gold standard is to continue to provide responsible, committed, and result-oriented leadership, not to engage in the purchase and distribution of party gifts. “We urge the Dubai-based company, which has since said that the order for the said 53 gold i-phones was placed by a private individual and not the Nigerian government, to go ahead and disclose the identity of that individual. We appeal to the public to beware of the increasing desperation of those with politically vested interests, seeking to pull down this administration. Their moral bankruptcy is condemnable. “The Jonathan administration will remain focused as it continues to serve the Nigerian people diligently” he said http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/09/presidency-denies-ordering-53-gold-plated-iphones-for-independence-celebration/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |
