Politics › Switzerland, Buhari And Abacha Loot - Thisday Newspaper Article by Here2BustnScrew(op): 1:09pm On Mar 24, 2015 |
Having watched the presidential standard-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, campaign around the country in the last couple of weeks, noted the emptiness and the near hollowness of the whole exercise, and having watched him garner some endorsements both from within and outside the country, I have come to the inescapable conclusion that those promoting the Buhari candidacy must have other reasons for backing him than the advertised prospect of saving Nigeria and setting it on the path of rebirth. Except we have all agreed that, it is better to settle for less, I see no plausible reason to present such shallowness as change and then proceed to premise the hope of a country’s rebirth on such disjointed motley assemblage of promises.
I however do not share the views of the change mob hysteria about Buhari because we have not been presented with the sheerest evidence to support those prepositions other than hope. Rather, my position is heavily supported by the evidence already in the public domain and further buttressed by the news last week that Candidate Buhari failed to apologise 31 years after he jailed two journalists under the jackboot of his obnoxious Decree No.4 which he used to gag and cow the press, despite claims by Professor Wole Soyinka that he had shown signs of “plausible transformation” and Buhari’s claim at Chatham House that he is a reformed dictator who has fully embraced democracy. Both claims in my view cannot pass the sniff test. Rather, what I see here is obvious deniability of the reality of who Buhari really is.
It appears the blitzkrieg rebranding of Candidate Buhari by the South-west (APC) apparatchik has only succeeded at the superficial level of creating a perception rather than reality, and that perception is what has driven the campaign thus far. But the reality is that the man being bandied around as the face of change has not changed from who he is to who or what he is not despite wearing different robes to give the veneer of “change” and “plausible transformation”. His refusal to show some atonement for sins of the past sets him apart from Mathieu Kerekou of Benin Republic who was reported to have apologised for his actions in a church. Has Buhari ever apologised for any of his actions? Not that I recall.
In the March 18, 2015 edition of THISDAY Newspaper, which reported the news of Buhari’s failure to apologise, there was another news story that caught my attention, titled: “Switzerland to return $380m Abacha loot”. The timing of the action of the Swiss authorities was particularly instructive as we go into the election. Buhari whose twin campaign sloganeering messages have been that he will fight corruption and end Boko Haram has consistently denied that Abacha stole Nigeria’s money. According to him, Abacha neither stole nor looted the country’s treasury. He described the allegations of looting against Abacha as “baseless”, because according to him, “ten years after Abacha, those allegations remain unproven because of lack of facts”. This was despite the fact that hundreds of millions of dollars had in well publicised reports been returned to Nigeria as part of the Abacha loot. Now that Switzerland is set to return another tranche of $380m, does Buhari still stand by his statement that the allegations or accusations against Abacha are “baseless” and not supported by “facts”? Here are three countries that have returned money stolen by Abacha to Nigeria.
Switzerland: Switzerland had earlier returned more than $700m that the late Abacha hid in Swiss accounts and is now set to return another $380 million stolen by the dictator.
Liechtenstein: The Government of the Principality of Liechtenstein returned $227m stolen by Abacha in 2014.
Channels Island: The State of Jersey in the Channels Island is set to return £315 million (N90,040,634,775.00) to Nigeria as part of funds recovered from the late dictator, Sani Abacha. The Island had earlier returned the sum of £140m (N40,018,059,900.00) to Nigeria in two batches. But the man who has been rebranded as the face of change; the man “destined” to save Nigeria and fight corruption denies it ever happened in the face of overwhelming evidence - and stated sternly that - Abacha never stole Nigeria’s money.
Anyone who has a long memory will recall that former President Olusegun Obasanjo earned many flight miles in pursuit of Abacha’s loot. He hired international lawyers to chase those monies anywhere they may be located on planet Earth and recover them for Nigeria. Buhari was fully aware of all those efforts and yet denied Abacha ever looted the country’s coffers. The irony today is that the same Obasanjo is one of the front row supporters of Buhari-for-President in the coming election. It is most probable that Obasanjo will even deny his efforts to recover the loot considering the manner he recently dismissed the PTF report. What does this say about our leaders?
On Thursday last week, newspapers lavishly reported Buhari as saying “a corrupt government is worse than armed robbery.” Really? I chuckled - Was he kidding? I am sure his definition of a corrupt government does not include Abacha’s thieving government. Otherwise, he won’t have said the clear evidence was “baseless …unproven because of lack of facts.”
Meanwhile, the Swiss prosecutor’s office said overall, the Abacha clan was thought to have diverted about $5bn from the Nigerian treasury, adding that much of it ended up abroad.
Now the question is: should Buhari go on to win Saturday’s presidential election, it would therefore mean that, he will be the one to manage the $380m about to be returned by Switzerland. Will he hand over the money to Abacha’s family since he believes they were being wrongly hounded to return money they never stole in the first place? Will he tell the Swiss authorities to keep the money as no money was ever looted and insist on being an accessory to the fact of a conspiracy of lies and falsehood told against Abacha family? Will he demand Switzerland must apologise to the family?
This is the man now being advertised as the one who will fight corruption and “restore hope.” Anyone who denies that Abacha looted the nation’s treasury not only holds our values in contempt but does pure violence to those values. And for the first time, and strangely so, the interests of the activists, pro-democracy groups, career critics, seasoned lawyers, ex-dictators, flawed progressives, ably supported by a vocal section of the intelligentsia have converged on a candidate - Candidate Buhari - irrespective of the records of history against him. What an irony!
As our highly revered Professor Soyinka in 2007 said when Buhari wanted to contest: “This intervention has been provoked, not so much by the ambitions of General Buhari to return to power as the head of a democratic Nigeria, as by declarations of support from directions that leave one totally dumbfounded. It would appear that some, myself among them, had been over-complacent about the magnitude of an ambition that seemed as preposterous as the late effort of General Ibrahim Babangida to aspire yet again to the honour of presiding over a society that truly seeks a democratic future. What one had dismissed was a rash of illusions, brought about by other political improbabilities that surround us, however, is being given an air of plausibility by individuals and groupings to which one had earlier attributed a sense of relevance of historic actualities.” Unfortunately today, our respected professor and wordsmith is now one of the individuals championing the crusade of the “plausible transformation” of Buhari without “rigorous inspection of the evidence”. What a turnaround!

exxell: So today, Buhari came to Owerri peacefully and went without any hitch. When he left, nobody used water to wash the road. He was respected as an official contender for the post of the presidency. Rewind back to last week. President Jonathan was in Daura, Kastina state and when he left, the youths and elders were washing the road as if an evil came to visit them. They spited the office of the presidency! All these while, I have always been skeptical of voting Jonathan again because he was too "gentle" for me. But I also know that Buhari is not a better option for Nigeria. My reasons are these;
#1 He is retarrded #2 He is a Muslim and an extremist for that one #3 He is too old to rule Nigeria in the 21st century... All these his packagings are hogwash by those who want to hijack Nigeria #4 He said that the full meaning of APC is All Progressive Confident #5 He has no certificate (Proven)... How can he rule Nigeria with so many professors around? #6 He called INEC the Independent Nigeria Electoral Commission #7 He is surrounded by crooks who wants nothing but their own selfish gains e.g Rochas Okorocha, Tinubu and Co, Amaechi #8 He said that the name of his VP is Yemi Osunbade #9 He said that he will stabilise oil prices in the world ( Confirm Madness) #10 He just said today that he will make the naira equal to dollars Who does this man take us for? Magas?
Because of the above listed reasons and because Jonathan didn't perform as I expected, I decided to void my vote. But today in the evning as I was discussing with a Mallam that came to repair my shoe, guess what this man told me? That Allah has decreed that Buhari will win. He said that Jonathan won the 2011 elections because the Nothern people sinned against Allah and that Allah said in the Qur'an that anytime they sin, foreigners will rule them! I was like the Fucckk? He said that this was what has been preached to them all these while in their mosques . The one that annoyed me most was that he told me that the Northerners don't need any education in order to hold any political post because they have a divine mandate to rule the world.
At this point, I wanted to go inside my house, boil hot oil and barbecue this illiterate fool... But the love of God made me not to.
So finally, I have decided to go and dust up my PVC again and VOTE DR GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN! This man is an Angel.... Believe me when I tell you so.... You need to listen to a Northerner and believe me. God bless you man.. |

I was keeping her updated with calls and sms. Then when I returned on Friday,i called her, she asked me to leave it till Monday to resume.on Saturday i sent her a happy weekend msg and asked after her family?then she called me back and said to me "don't you think u re bigger than this job u applied for"? I want to give u something more befitting than that position u applied for, she asked,"can u work as my personal assistant and also be the coordinator of my company"? Wow! My head swells. Jega meeting with osibanjo in Lagos http://www.9jagistonline.com/exposed-osibanjo-and-jega-secret-meeting-in-lagos/simply means they are working together to make sure they accomplish their evil plan but that won't happen.. This piece will examine the legal angles of a sudden end of tenure for Prof. Attahiru Jega, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission. Constitutional removal from office for misconduct will be excluded because, since President Goodluck Jonathan has ruled that out, any further discussion of it will be academic. Resignation will also be excluded because Jega has said that he won’t resign. Ditto for terminal leave because that has been discussed enough by my humble self and others and it is all there in the public domain. That leaves us with ‘suspension’ – the next plausible avenue Jega can go, but which has been hardly debated. If anybody is wondering why I am writing this, then hear this: I have nothing personal against Jega. I am merely flagging the other means, even though latent and unpleasant, through which his tenure might end suddenly before his date with March 28. But as many folks don’t know, or won’t admit, it is squarely within the powers of the president, not the Senate, to suspend Jega and it can happen at any time of the president’s choosing. Below are the points and authorities: First, under the Interpretation Act, the President has the authority to suspend any public officer appointed by him, regardless of whether they were subject to Senate confirmation or not; or appointed for a fixed tenure. Here is the black letter provisions, as enacted at Section 11(1): ‘Where an enactment confers a power to appoint a person either to an office or to exercise any functions, whether for a specified period or not, the power includes power to remove or suspend him’. So, there you have it in plain letters – that the President, as the ‘appointing’ power is, ipso facto, the ‘suspending’ power as well. And most tellingly, while the Constitution expressly requires the consent of the Senate before the President can remove (not suspend) Jega, there is no similar legislative check on the President’s power to suspend him. Plus, pertinent laws made a clear distinction between removal and suspension; so there is no room for ever confusing or commingling the two. And now this: the law clearly says that such public officer can still be suspended despite being appointed for a ‘specified period’. Jega was appointed for a specified period of 5 years. Second, if you are amongst those who argue that to hold elections legally requires a substantive (or Senate-confirmed) INEC chairman, you now must know that the Constitution envisaged and took care of that. This is found at Section 318(2), which says that ‘Wherever it is provided that any authority or person has power to make an appointment to an office, such power shall be construed as including the power to make such appointment, whether on promotion or otherwise, or to act in any such office’. Continuing, Section 318(3), says that ‘references to a person holding an office shall include reference to a person acting in such office’. And there is more at Section 11(1) of the Interpretation Act, which says ‘Where an enactment confers a power to appoint a person either to an office or to exercise any functions, whether for a specified period or not, the power includes to appoint a person to act in his place, either generally or in regard to specified functions, during such time as is considered expedient by the authority in whom the power of appointment in question is vested’. Then, Section 11(2) adds the clincher that ‘A reference in an enactment to the holder of an office shall be construed as including a reference to a person for the time being appointed to act in his place, either as respects the functions of the office generally or the functions in regard to which he is appointed, as the case may be’. The plain meaning of the foregoing provisions is simply that our laws don’t strictly require a substantive INEC chairman for elections to hold; and the President can legally appoint an acting INEC chairman, if he so chooses. Thus, other than Jega, any of the 12 national commissioners, appointed by the President in acting capacity, can legally proceed to conduct the 2015 elections. Third, having thus far established the discretionary powers of the President to suspend Jega, let us now turn to the reasons the President might adduce for taking such course of action, even though nothing in the pertinent laws require the President to give any reasons. Yet, if he chooses to, the President can readily take umbrage under the Constitution, which provides at Section 160(1) that ‘any of the bodies may, with the approval of the President, by rules or otherwise regulate its own procedure”. The bodies referenced above are the statutory ones created under the Constitution, amongst which INEC is included. So, the next logical question is whether Jega has unilaterally been making ‘rules or otherwise regulating INEC procedures’ without the approval of the President? It appears he has been doing exactly that, as is evidenced by his publicized many acts of insubordination to the President. That alone, without more, means that Jega has serially and brazenly violated the letters and spirit of Section 160 of the Constitution. Therefore, it is no longer a question of whether he is amenable to being suspended or not, but when and if the President will see fit to do so, as a matter of lawful and sound exercise of his discretionary powers. http://www.theopinion.ng/forget-terminal-leave-jega-can-be-suspended/ |

Bashir Junaid, one of the detainees in the murder trial of the PDP chieftain, Funsho Williams, has filed a suit seeking an order of mandamus compelling the inspector general of police to re-open investigations into how the late PDP governorship candidate in Lagos was murdered. The order was granted as Justice Rita Ofili- Ajumogobia of the Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday agreed to Junaid’s request. Junaid, a former cemetery attendant, was detained for about a year in connection with Williams’s murder, but later released. His suit listed the following as respondents: the police inspector general at the time, Sunday Ehindero; the Lagos state commissioner of police; the investigating police officer in the murder case; the attorney general of the federation at the time; Modupe Shasore; the former Lagos state governor, Senator Bola Tinubu; Dr Muiz Banire; Babatunde Edu; Dele Alake; and Oladele Ajomale. According to Talentarenaafrica.com, in the suit Junaid cited Tinubu as a prime suspect. In a 48-point statement of claims in support of the suit, Junaid who lives at 6/8 Oladiti Street, Ilupeju, Palm Grove, Lagos, averred that due to the influence of Tinubu and Banire and the compromising position of the investigators at the Federal Central Investigations Department (FCID) Alagbon, Banire was only cautioned and made to rewrite another statement by the police, while his freely confessed statement which could have assisted the police in its attempt to unravel the actual killers of Williams, with the concrete and implicating evidence, was discarded by the police at Alagbon Close, Lagos. Williams was killed on July 27, 2006 at his Dolphin Estate residence in Ikoyi, Lagos. http://www.naij.com/406491-tinubu-fingered-in-funsho-williams-death.html |

francizy: The APC has been receiving donations from well meaning Nigerians of late. It's a very good sign to see people wishing to help the old general achieve his ambition for the first time since 2003. However, what's most baffling is the manner in which Nigerians are coming out to support the course of the APC.
An example is the story of a 92 years old granny donating over a million Naira to Buhari and the APC campaign. As if she doesn't have sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, nephews, nieces, etc, that would have benefited from the money.
Then a 9 years old girl that should ordinarily be thinking of her academics, chocolates, biscuits, toys and funs, saving up to NGN 6,000 (or is it NGN 10,000 because am confused here) and presenting it to the old general to support his course and that of the APC. "My heart was filled with joy when I saw the title of this movie and after watching it, I smiled as I swallowed the tale like it had happened in real life".
Another one happened today where a dying man donated his body parts to the course of the APC campaign. These body parts includes the following: his joystick, heart, lungs, liver and brains. What these body parts are/were meant for we do not know as our correspondence wasn't able to extract these words from the man before he passed on. It is now left for the APC to lay claim to the donor's body parts.

goofy124: IN THIS INTERVIEW, COL. TONY NYIAM, who was part of the failed attempt to oust the Gen. Ibrahim Babangida’s military government in 1990, tells WAHEED BAKARE and ALLWELL OKPI, how the Orkar coup originated and its relevance to Nigerian politics There is the argument that we don’t need to have another conference since we have representatives at the National Assembly. It is the most ignorant assumption. Why do I say it is ignorant? With all the political scientists we have in our midst, people forget that what we are practising is what we call indirect democracy. What do I mean? The proprietary right over people’s sovereignty is delegated to people we elect to make laws for us. When it comes to making constitutional reforms or constitution making, you go to what is called direct democracy. Direct democracy means direct voting by the people in the form of a referendum and that is why the universal practice is that a constitution making process that does not go through a constituent assembly, whose decisions are approved by a referendum, is null and void. We see the examples. Look at South Sudan; it’s creation resulted from a referendum. How is it that Nigerians do not understand that for a constitution to be legitimate, it has to be driven by the people, and the people are usually represented by a constituent assembly? And this constituent assembly is usually made up of non-partisan politicians, because partisan politicians are only concerned with the next election. They are not concerned about posterity or long-term issues in the country. So, constitution which outlives people and a generation should be driven by civil society, collection of every nationality in the country and clerics. I would cite an example. My second home is in Scotland and in Scotland those who drove for the national conference were the clerics of the Church of Scotland, they were at the forefront. We also saw it in Ireland. Britain has the oldest parliament in the world, why are they allowing a constituent assembly to go ahead, while there are parliaments? It is only in Nigeria that such argument is raised because of the ignorance of the difference between direct and indirect democracy. That’s why I have tried to do an aide-memoir to aid constitution- making. There are certain basic principles of constitution-making, which if we do not follow, would be like building a house on quicksand. Do you think we would have been able to tacklethese problems if the June 12 election had not been annulled by Babangida? The thing is, Chief MKO Abiola, who I had the opportunity to work with when he escaped from Nigeria to UK, was a man that we lost because his plan was to correct the national issues and start democracy in Nigeria. But because some western interests in Nigeria did not want this, they colluded to do away with him. You once said soldiers could be recruited for a coup without their knowledge. How is that possible? Yes, there are many instances. You might want to verify this from Gen. Buhari, he was not the initiator of that coup that brought him in as Head of State, it was Gen. Ibrahim Bako and Babangida that initiated it. But because they wanted a credible figure as a face, he was brought in. He did not know the genesis of that coup. He was not quite aware of the original idea behind the coup and that was why when he decided to make a change, he was forced to step aside. So, if this could happen to a whole Gen. Buhari, who was supposedly the leader of a coup, it shows how many soldiers can be brought in that way. Does that mean overthrowing Shagari’s government was IBB’s idea? It was the idea of late Gen. Bako and IBB. Buhari was only brought in because they needed a face with integrity. Can you give other instances? Gen. Yakubu Gowon was not part of the coup that brought him in. He was a decent man. Nigerians like to play what the Yoruba people call bojuboju; they bring a figure with integrity to cover up their real intention; the real intention of politicians in uniform who have found cheap party. Many elements of them are in our partisan politics today. your point is? |

Obiagelli: I think the lekki robbery was largely successful because of the visit of president Jonathan and Muhamodu Buhari to Lagos yesterday. I think the over concentration of the entire security agencies on Victoria Island made other areas vulnerable. From eyewitness reports, the criminals had a filled time operating from close to fifteen minutes in a very busy area of Lagos, an area with usual high police and military (OP MESA) presence and there was almost no engagement or fire exchange. In fact the policemen that lost their lives were escorts to a private body.
The VIPs, Presidents and other top officials should look for ways to sort out their own security instead of putting the rest of us in danger. I don't see any reason why policemen should leave their formations to position themselves along the 3rd mainland bridge and major roads like mascots just because someone is visiting.

WisdomFlakes: Change can be simply defined as a movement away from Goodluck to Buhari.
Goodluck has obviously failed else he won't be struggling so hard to convince more than half of the country to re-elect him. how has he failed? |

mickyeddi: I am neither an advocate for apc nor pdp. Infact I'm not even a Nigerian but married to one and I also do business in Nigeria that's why I'm interested in its politics. From what I've seen, your country needs a massive change and your president is uninspiring. what kind of change sir? |

olami234lekan: All those things you mention that buhari has never done for Nigerian us not his responsibility as a citizen it is Government' s. Go around the world and prove me wrong. Building schools, hospital, recreation centers, constructing roads, bridges all what our governments are boasting of here are seen in the rest of the world as normal things no government can claim as achievement but how Strong their country is against the rest of the world is claimed as achievement, how their citizens are better off is achievement. And you claim buhari never wrote book and so on. On that he he not an academia but a military man and his records are there for all to see. He even has numerous lectures he has delivered at many prestigious gathering. Having said all that it is very interesting to inform you that your self acclaimed academia's work is no where to be found, his book and all. So in your own interest it will be better to keep away from insulting buhari for your own interest and GEJ's because any claim you bring forward will be exposed by a well informed Nigeria even those that are not APC member like myself. God bless Nigeria. why couldn't he build almajiri schools for his people, if he truly has the peoples interest at heart. buhari has nothing good to offer NIGERIA.. |

Politics › Re: Beyond Propaganda: President Jonathan Is Favored To Win SW (opinion) by Here2BustnScrew: 10:58pm On Mar 17, 2015 |
barcanista: Afenifere And OPC Favor Jonathan The endorsement of Jonathan's candidacy by the influential pan Yoruba group Afenifere and O'dua Peoples' Congress will in no small way influence the voting pattern of their members-most of whom are grassroot people. Otunba Gani Adams, National Coordinator, OPC said, “we took time to study the situation of things and we took time to look at the capacity of the candidates involved. I won’t deceive you, from the National Coordinating Council, we have decided to inform our followers that they should vote for President Jonathan.”
The National leader of OPC Chief Fedrick Fasheun had earlier threw his support behind the re-election bid of President Jonathan.
However, another influential group, The Yoruba Council of Elders refused to publicly endorse any of the candidates.
A Look at APC: No doubt, APC controls 4 out of the Six government houses in the SW as at today, but the party has seen a huge dip in its political fortune in the region. One of the factor that helped the party to win Oyo and Ogun States in 2011 was the heavy factionalisaton within the PDP. Today, the APC in Ogun has had a major split with the SDP coming out a very strong beneficiary taking all Senators. The PDP in Ogun State is united. The APC also lost ALL their Senators in Oyo state, they can't boast of any today- though they gained a Senator in Ondo. In Lagos State, the influential Justice Group left the APC for the PDP. In Ekiti State, the APC was rejected in 2014. In Osun where it hold sway, the anger of civil servants over delay in payment of five(5) months salary may reflect at the Presidential poll. In Ondo State, the APC is not a force as it has little or no structure on ground.
Conclusion With the Leading parties in the SW and two highly influential groups queuing behind the President's re-election, it is safe to say that the Yoruba nation favors President Jonathan, while the APC candidate Gen Buhari plays second fiddle. Though it won't be fair to write off APC from the political calculation of the SW, yet it will amount to misinformation to say the APC is in control of the region.
God Bless The Yoruba Nation God Bless Nigeria God Bless President Jonathan President 2010-2019 ride on Sir.. |
