He scored 26,326 votes while his opponent, Kehinde Odebunmi of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), scored 17,344 and has consequently been declared the winner.

Declaring the outcome of the election amidst tight security at the collation centre in Community Grammar School in AramokoEkiti, the headquarters of Ekiti West Local Government, the Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), Dr Akintunde Aremu said Ojo polled the highest number of votes to defeat Odebunmi. The Ekiti Central Federal Constituency II comprises of Ijero, Efon and Ekiti West local government areas with about 33 wards and 114 polling units.

Results of six out of 441 units of the constituency were cancelled by INEC for electoral irregularities.
Aremu disclosed that seven political parties, ACN, PDP, All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA), All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), Alliance for Democracy (AD), National Transformation Party (NTP), and the Labour Party (LP), had a candidate each . Giving the breakdown of the results, the INEC returning officer said Ojo polled 26,326 votes, Odebunmi scored 17,344 votes, AD candidate, Olaolu Fasakin got 445 , APGA, Sayo Fatayo scored 445, LP candidate, Israel Ogunleye polled 69 and ANPP got 106 votes.

However, the candidate of the NTP, who went to the election petition tribunal to seek the nullification of Ojo’s election over non inclusion of his name and party logo in the April 2010, Ekiti Central II Federal Constituency election, Mr. Peters Adekola Bamigbade scored 153 votes. Out of the 120,980 registered voters, only 46,540 participated in the election, while 2059 votes were voided. Ojo hailed the outcome of the election, saying it reflected the wishes of Ekiti electorate. He commended the INEC, security agencies and members of various political parties that participated in the election for their civility.

Commenting on the outcome of the election, the National Commissioner of INEC in charge of Ekiti, Oyo and Ogun states, Prof. Lai Olurode, applauded people of the constituency for their peaceful conduct during the election.
The Ekiti State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Halilu Pai lauded the security agents and politicians for upholding the tenets of Electoral Act during the conduct of the election. The ACN Director of Media and Publicity, Akogun Tai Oguntayo, who described the victory as deserving as well lauded the INEC and security agencies for their peaceful conduct of the election.

But the PDP is not happy with the outcome of the election as the party’s director of communications and strategy said the election was rigged in some wards in favour of the ruling party, saying, “this is another case of a stolen mandate.”
Meanwhile, no fewer than eight suspected hoodlums, who were trying to hijack ballot boxes in Okemesi town in Ekiti -West Local Government Area were arrested by the Police.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Victor Babayemi said the hoodlums were arrested for attempting to snatch ballot boxes. The Appeal Court sitting in the state had on November 17, 2011 nullified the election of the Action Congress of Nigeria’s candidate and the winner of the April 26, 2011 election in the state, Mr. Oyetunde Ojo on the grounds that the logo and the names of the candidate of the National Transformation Party(NTP), Mr. Bamigbade Peters were missed on the ballot papers.

Since the beginning of the ember months, bank robberies in different states have escalated. But no state is feeling the spate of robberies as much as Ogun State.

For reasons security experts, including policemen are yet to fathom, robbers seemed to have become a permanent feature in the state. They have become so brazen, that attacking and robbing banks, motorists and residents is to them like taking a walk in spring time.
The robbery situation had become so bizarre to the extent that the robbers are even sending notifcation letters to banks, threatening to attack them. No bank wants to be caught napping. Many of the banks knew that desperation situations call for desperation measures. One of the measures they took was to shut down.

The worried Governor of the state, Mr. Ibikunle Amosun had however promised bankers in the state of better security.

The Nigerian Compass learned that some banks which were brave enough to call the robbers bluff, operated for only half a day.

But it’s not only the banks that are feeling the pinch of the robbers. Traders and residents in the state are also crying.

Recently, robbers attacked a cold room at the Lafenwa area of Abeokuta. The cold room was said to have the penchant of having many customers about. And on the fateful day the robbers attacked, the story was no different.

An eyewitness, identified as Mrs. Ademosun said: “We were many that day at the cold room, waiting to buy fishes. I used to buy in large quantity, to store in my freezer. We call the owner of the cold room, Madam Yesma.

Just as we were waiting that day, the robbers appeared from nowhere, shooting sporadically into the air. We all ran in different directions. Many of us abandoned our fishes. Nobody thought of fishes when lives were at stake. We ran. We later heard they collected all the money from the cold roo. For days, money had not been taken to banks because banks have refused to open. These robbers collected all the money from the two accountants of Yesma. Before they left, they ordered the two accountants to kneel down and start saying the Lord’s prayer.”

The Nigerian Compass also spoke with some residents in Ogun State, on how they had been coping with lives and children, since the closure of banks.

Mrs. Oyedele, a teacher, said: “I am not used to withdrawing money inside the banking hall. I prefer the ATM. But the funniest part of it is that the ATM machines are not even working too. When I wanted to collect money, I went to my bank, I pressed the machine, I thought I made a mistake at first , I tried and tried but I could not withdrew money because the machine refused to dispense any. I left there and went to another bank to try their ATM machine but when I got there, I met a long queue.

“These people were also experiencing the same problem. I needed the money to buy something for my daughter who was going back to school. I just had to ask her to go, that I was going to buy the things she needed later. Government should try and do something about the situation because it’s taking too long. It is like the robbers are not scared of the police anymore! It is the police that are now scared of them.”

“My Dad promised to send some money to me for my school fees. I waited for him to send it but I did not get it,” said Banji, a student. “So I had to come home to get it, only for me to hear that robbers were trying to take over the banks. I thought it was a joke until I started seeing reports of it in newspapers. We have never experienced this kind of thing in Abeokuta before. We cannot sleep with both eyes closed. We want the government to put in more action and less talk!”

Ali, Corp member said: “I rely so much on ATM machines to get money but I don’t know why these bank officials have refused to put money into the machine. The ATM machines are not banking halls, they are outside. But the bank officials have refused to put money inside it. So they have caused us a lot of hardship. If not for my family and friends around here, I don’t know what would have happened to me because I do not like carrying lots of cash around. I usually withdrew money when I need it. But if this thing continues, lots of Corp members like me, who do not have anyone around them, will face myriad of problems.”

Munsurat, a business woman explained: “As you know, we make money every day from this business that we run and the normal thing is that after the day’s work, we take our money to the bank. But now we have to keep it somewhere in our office which is risky. In fact, since the closure of the banks, we have lost a lot of customers because they don’t have money to buy goods. Even the few customers that come, we give them goods on credit, hoping they will pay back when the banks re -open.”

Even as residents of Ogun are groaning, members of the Lagos State police command are beating their chest and saying such nonsense can never happen in Lagos. According to many of them, “We are ever ready for bank robbers!”

The Lagos State Police spokesman, Mr. Samuel Jinadu said policemen in the state are working assiduously to make sure the situation in Ogun never come to pass in Lagos.

He revealed that the state commissioner of police, Mr. Yakubu Alkali had put a number of measures in place to check robberies in the state.
“Measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of people in Lagos, especially in this ember months and forthcoming January celebration. Patrol teams have been created to make sure that there are no problems during and after the Christmas and New Year festivities.

“ I want to tell people in Lagos that nothing untoward can happen in form of robberies or bank robberies. We have not recorded any bank robbery so far due to the effort of the commissioner of police and men of the command. I have to confess that security had been put in place around banks to make sure nothing happens. Moreover, we have a good number of Armoured Personnel Carriers and patrol vehicles,” bragged Jinadu.

He added that black spots in the state were being regularly combed to check robbery activities. He however added that the success of securing banks would not have been possible without cooperation from banks.

But no matter the tension and scare ravaging the Ogun State, police spokesman, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi has insisted that the police command was on top of the situation.

His: “We are on top of the situation. The state government has acquired more Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) to combat the crime. Also, there is a joint patrol between the police and army. Our men have also been deployed to strategic locations across the state. I am using this opportunity to tell gateway people to go about their businesses.”

Former Lagos State Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday reacted to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s comments that the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) was crying over spilled milk on the outcome of the governorship election which gave victory to the ruling party in Kogi State.

Tinubu, who is the national leader of the ACN, said Obasanjo does not have the moral rectitude to pass judgment on the ACN or its performance at the Kogi State governorshiop election, as he has lost the moral compass to comment on such issues, given antecedent while in office.

Speaking to reporters at the presidential wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos while departing on a trip, Tinubu said: “What integrity has Obasanjo in terms of his legacies for Nigeria to speak on elections? The only election that was clear in this country was the one that was organised before the Fourth Republic. The worst legacy in electoral practice was left by Obasanjo. He has no reason whatsoever and he has no audacity to talk about free and fair elections in this country.

“Apart from his aborted third term ambition, he brought about and left a legacy of electoral corruption in the country to the extent that his successor , the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, set up Uwais Panel. Instead of implementing UwaisPanel’s report comprehensively on how to improve on the election, they stage managed and sidetracked that report. They went a step ahead by only implementing only one or two items.
“What is Obasanjo talking about? He should go away and retired in shame politically. He should leave the political landscape of this country alone. He brought a whole salad of corruption, manipulation and failures.”

On the last local government elections in Lagos State, Tinubu said: “He has no audacity to talk about these local government elections. The local government that he didn’t believe in its creation. Is it the local government that he denied funding and all other related constitutional malpractices? Did he ever believe in free and fair elections? What is he talking about? He should not be talking in this country. He should go to his farm, retire and cover his face in shame, milk his cows and attend to the chickens.”
On whether the ACN will contest the Kogi State governorship elections result, Tinubu said: “We are going to contest the election in the tribunal. Until Nigeria has a free and fair election, we would not be at peace in this country. That is the truth. What legacy has Obasanjo left for this country? Look at the situation with the petroleum sector today, I can show you paper now. Go and look for The Vanguard of 1998. And 1999, when we started the discussion on the petroleum subsidy, what did he do? What has he done? He left that problem till now. What has he done on electricity? He left that legacy of failure till now. The man has no locus to even talk about integrity.”

On the recent protest of members of the Odua Peoples Congress ( OPC) on the spate of political violence in the country, Tinubu said : “We have leadership deficiency in this country. I don’t subscribe to OPC’s protest. What are they protesting about? They should talk about the security of lives and property across the country. This is not a matter that is sectional; this is a nation whose image is being battered worldwide. This is a country that is seen as a terrorist nation, that makes life very difficult for its citizens in Diaspora and our travellers. This is a situation that would not bring direct investment to the country. The approach is not protest. It is not a matter of a sectional protest; it is a matter of a national magnitude. “

He further said : “What has he done in the privatization? He left the litany of corruption. It was Obasanjo that made us give another vocabulary in transparency. He said that you can be transparently corrupt. Transparent corruption in TRANSCORP and so many other privatization programmes carried out during his administration.”

THE lingering feud between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his vice president for eight years, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, yesterday, reverberated as Atiku chose the occasion of the 1st Shehu Musa Yar’Adua memorial lecture to display his contempt for his former boss as he skipped him (Obasanjo) in his protocol list.

The former vice president had recognised all the dignitaries at the occasion including the visiting South African President, Mr Jacob Zuma, who was the special guest of honour, but left out Obasanjo.

Atiku, however, was quick to apologise when his attention was drawn to it by an aide of former National Security Adviser, General Aliyu Gusau Mohammed. The former vice president then said: “Before I continue, let me apologize for skipping my boss, President Obasanjo, I apologise”.

Obasanjo is the chairman of the Yar’Adua Foundation while Atiku is the vice chairman.

As if the omission was deliberate, the former vice president went further to relay his persecution under his former boss, telling his audience that like Zuma, he (Atiku Abubakar) was persecuted in office while serving as vice president.

He told the audience which included Vice President Namadi Sambo, who stood in for President Goodluck Jonathan, and former president of Mali, Alfa Konare, that, in the cause of duty and interaction with Zuma, who was then serving as vice to Dr. Thabo Mbeki, ex-South African president, he discovered that he shared many things in common with Zuma, ranging, among others, as coming from a very humble background and rose to become vice president and was persecuted while in office, the same way Zuma was persecuted and kicked out of office.

”Zuma was persecuted and later removed from office. I was also persecuted while in office, but the constitution of Nigeria blocked them from removing me from office. Ever since we became friends when we established the common things about us, in fact when I visited South Africa as Vice President, President Zuma took me to his village where I was warmly welcomed and I saw beautiful Zulu maidens. When he also visited Nigeria, I took him to my village in Adamawa”, he said.

Obasasnjo, however, did not have the opportunity to respond, having spoken first while delivering his welcome address.

Welcoming the guest, Obasanjo said that the Yar’Adua Centre features social responsibility programmes and public policy projects supporting 25 academically talented students from less privileged families and two community libraries.

On the issue of bearing arms, I know that the Nigerian law allows hunting riffles. So, don't teach me Nigeria law of gun ownership. My father owned some and they played a very important role in his survival during the crisis of 1966, making it possible for him and my mum to escape back to Eastern Nigeria. I am a STRONG believer in the right to bear arms.
In fact, I strongly believe that any business or property owner MUST own a gun. "Eze Igbo NL" title would not change my core beliefs as Nwa afo Igbo, especially when I know it would help my people survive a mass murdering jungle such as Nigeria. The same reason is why the Fulani herdsmen in Nigeria are armed with dangerous weapons (legal or not).
As Nigeria wobbles along, every clash involving the Fulani ALWAYS leads to the death of THE OTHER GUY, not Fulani.

Until Nigeria negotiates the terms of citizenship, I am only more interested in the survival of the golden fish of Nigeria -Ndigbo.
