Why should my name come in here?

The fairytale wedding between Funke Fowler and Abiodun Kuku, children of Lagos State Inland Revenue (LIRS) boss, Tunde Fowler and Ogbeni Oja of Ijebuland, Chief Bayo Kuku,; has come and gone, but the ripples caused by the event, described as the most flamboyant wedding in recent times, are taking a toll on the relationship between the bride’s father and Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State.

The wedding ceremony of the young couple was in two parts; and held in two continents. The first part was the traditional wedding held on October 22, 2011. The venue was the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos. The ceremony witnessed a sheer display of affluence as the crème de la crème of the society struggled to get seats at the event.

The Forbes richest man in Africa, Alhaji Aliko Dangote; National leader of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; Federal lawmakers, Governors, Captains of Industry and who is who in the country were present at the ceremony which was conservatively reckoned to have gulped over N100 million.

Part two of the ceremony was held in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday, November 19, 2011.

We gathered that Dubai, the capital city of the UAE, was bombarded by the Nigerian nouveaux riche who had gone to witness the wedding. Moneybags in Nigeria took chartered flights to Dubai, while sources claimed Fowler flew all his guests to the Arabian city first class. Indeed, the Fowler and Kuku wedding attracted so much hype, owing to what many described as wasteful spending.

Expectedly, the Lagos Inland Revenue Service boss, Babatunde Fowler has received several knocks from many quarters. Critics have questioned
how he got so much money as a civil servant to blow on his daughter’s wedding.

This brazen show of affluence, we learnt, so much infuriated the Lagos State Governor , Raji Fashola, who could not disguise his displeasure
with Fowler over the negative reactions the wedding attracted to his government.

According to a source, “Governor Fashola has been receiving many comments which suggest that Fowler used tax payers’ money to stage the
wedding for his daughter. Their argument is that people who worked hard for their money would not spend the way Fowler did. Neither Mike Adenuga norDangote would spend like that.”

We further learnt that in a meeting recently, Fashola lambasted Tunde Fowler over the ostentatious wedding.

“Fashola told Fowler in the presence of the people at the meeting that he (Fowler) is too flamboyant and extravagant. And if he could have his way, the LIRS boss would be removed from office immediately,” our source added.

We learnt that since the one-in-town wedding, relations between the Governor and Fowler have been frosty.

Pdp Condemns Aregbesola For Releasing Killers Of Odunayo Olagbaju

The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the release of those who were convicted for the murder of a former member of the House of Assembly, Odunayo Olagbaju.

A statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Funmi Lamuye on Thursday said the party was shocked to learn that Mr Rauf Aregbesola had ordered the release of the convicts.
Hon Olagbaju was murdered in Ile Ife in December 2001 by some people in the midst of the crisis between two factions of the Alliance for Democracy Government allegedly led by then Governor Bisi Akande and his deputy, Iyiola Omisore. Olagbaju belonged to the Omisore camp.

The PDP statement reads: “We wish to condemn in its entirety the decision of the Rauf Aregbesola administration to free convicts that confessed to have played a part in the assassination of Late Odunayo Olagbaju “Misty.”
“While the state chapter of the PDP agrees that the governor reserves the right to free prisoners, it is rather suspicious the kind of interest the ACN government has in the case of those that willingly confessed to have killed the vibrant legislator, who represented Ife Central State Constituency between 1999 and 2001.

“The recent action of the Rauf Aregbesola administration has confirmed suspicions that Odunayo Olagbaju, though of the Alliance for Democracy stock, was murdered for his people- centered stance. “It is another pointer to the fact that, under the so-called exercise of Prerogative of Mercy power is a murder-supporting motive. “The assassination of late Odunayo Olagbaju 10 years ago is still fresh in the memories of the people of Ile-Ife and democracy supporting Osun people.

“It leaves much to be desired for any government, person or group to openly show sympathy to those who confessed to his killing and were duly convicted. “The Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State wants Mr. Rauf Aregbesola and his National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande to search their conscience, (if they have any,) what would their families have done if they were in Olagbaju’s shoe.

“The PDP wants to ask on what grounds the ACN governor granted amnesty to the said self-confessed murderers?
“The corpse of Olagbaju (aka misty) will no doubt be turning in the grave. Where is justice?,” the PDP queried.

Ghana’s ruling government has concluded plans to begin export of electric power to Nigeria and other West African countries by 2015.
The country’s Vice President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, who unfolded the plan in Accra, on Tuesday, said the government has already embarked on extensive expansion of power infrastructure to enable them achieve the project.

Mahama explained that a key motivation for the investment was that Ghana presently has competitive advantage in the area of power supply over other neighbouring countries, including Nigeria, which is still grappling with massive power deficit for its estimated 150 million citizens.

The vice president, who spoke at a summit on Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Compact Two in Accra, said the country intends to consolidate on its existing energy infrastructures by exploring alternative sources of supply, including solar power and biomass resources, to ensure that the target of selling power to other West African countries was achieved by the next four years.

Mahama, who underscored the imperative of stable energy in the economic development of his country said Ghana was partnering the United States Government to realize the dream, stressing that raising the nation`s power generation would in addition create wealth and alleviate poverty among her citizens. It was in the light of that initiative that the Millennium Challenge Account Compact two was organized to seek ways of funding power generation and transmission and uninterrupted power supply.

Under the arrangement, the country intends to increase her current 2000 megawatts of electricity to 5000 megawatts with the hope of selling surpluses to needy countries including Nigeria. Also speaking, Ghana’s deputy minister of Energy, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini explained that the country would require about $1.7billion to meet its quest for universal access to power supply, pointing out the President Arthur Mills government had already received about $966.55million from bilateral and multilateral institutions in that regard.
Alhaji Fuseini said there was a` shortfall of about $729million against which background it considered MCA compact two was considered useful.

IT would be recalled that Ghana has one of the largest dams in the world had in 2009 celebrated her ten years of uninterrupted power supply. Authoritative sources say that the Akosombo Dam built by late President Kwame Nkrumah has the potential to supply the entire West Africa with electricity if fully utilized.

It would be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan had shortly after being sworn-in in May reviewed the nation’s power roadmap, raising fears that Nigeria may continue to live with power shortages in the foreseeable future.

Erstwhile Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Dimeji Bankole and his deputy, Mr Usman Bayero Nafada, Wednesday, insisted before an Abuja High Court sitting at Apo that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has no case against them.

The duo are answering to a 17-count criminal charge preferred against them by the anti-graft agency sequel to alleged uncanny role they played in a N40bn loan saga that trailed the 6th session of the House of Representatives.

At the resumed hearing, yesterday, the accused persons contended that the EFCC woefully failed to establish the prima-facie criminal offence they committed by securing loan for the running of the House of Representatives in compliance with laid down procedures in the legislative house, and urged the court to extend the period originally allotted for them to open their defence.

They made the application through their respective lawyers, Chief Olawale Akonni (SAN) and Mr Tayo Oyetibo (SAN).

Following a no objection from the prosecuting counsel, Mr Festus Keyamo, Justice Belgore adjourned the matter till January 16, 2012.

It will be recalled that among those that testified in the matter included the Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Abubakar Maikasuwa, his counterpart from the House of Representatives, Mr Mohammed Ataba Sani-Omolori, director of Finance and Administration in the House, Mr. Lasisi Bukoye, top officials of the RMAFAC, officials of the two banks that granted the loan facility and EFCC investigators.

THE race as to who succeeds President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 when he would have completed his first tenure in office seems to have been kick started by impatient politicians from the North who are members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

National Daily sources disclosed that Vice President Namadi Sambo may have thrown his hat into the ring before the umpires whistle actually begins. It was gathered that Sambo firmly believes in the philosophy which submits that “a new election begins soon after the previous election” because electoral exercise in a populous country like Nigeria requires some reasonable number of years for a candidate to make credible impact.

The sign that Vice President Namadi Sambo nurses the ambition to succeed President Jonathan in 2015 was unveiled at the September 8, 2011 meeting of the Northern zone of the Peoples Democratic Party where youths wore face cap and T-Shirts with “The Promise” the campaign slogan of the vice president emblazoned on it. The youth on arrival at the meeting venue made a rowdy noise as they shouted “Sai Sambo” endlessly around the place.

Vice President Sambo's associates and some PDP chieftains from the North were said to have openly canvassed for support for Sambo's alleged presidential project on that day.

Jonathan has not officially declared Sambo as his successor but sources concluded that the President is not specifically against Sambo's candidature, but this is not the right time to discuss the issue of successor.

Caution

“The manner of the President's reference to Sambo at both private and public functions has made party official and Aso Rock staff to start speculating on the president's choice but the president for now does not wish to make it an open affair. I think he is unhappy over Sambo's early political activities, he does not want him to jump the gun.” A competent source said.

National Daily learned that President Jonathan was disturbed by the news of Sambo's perceived launch of 2015 presidential campaign and hinted that he was averse to the distraction of political campaign and was said to have considered Sambo's subtle presidential moves as a major distraction for the presidency.

Sources said that the President made known his feeling to his Deputy few days after the meeting of PDP Northern zone when he allegedly had a chat with Sambo and was said to have cautioned him against further acts capable of distracting the presidency and also give wrong signals to other ambitious politicians across the country.

“The Vice President was said to have become sober after the meeting, he seemed to have realized that he made a tactical mistake. He was said to have personally apologized to the president and convinced the PDP Acting National Chairman, Alhaji Kawu Baraje to also apologize to the President on his behalf.”

The Vice President proceeded to issue a statement denying any suggestion of a campaign launch and for a long time retreated to his self. However, it is said that a Leopard does not change its spot. At the recently held Arewa conference on Peace and Unity in Kaduna where Sambo represented Jonathan, the impression was still created that the vice president is the “2015 Presidency promise to the North”.

“As soon as Namadi Sambo arrived at the Murtala Square, Kaduna, venue of the Conference, shouts of “Sai Sambo and “the promise” rented the air. The guest at the occasion including ordinary citizens from the North perceived Sambo to be “the promise” of a northern president in 2015. In fact some of the guests were said to have openly referred to Sambo as “the President in the waiting.” Our source said.

Pressures

National Daily gathered that indeed some Northern influential politicians have started mounting pressures on Sambo to tacitly prepare for the presidency in 2015. They allegedly told the Vice President that he is the brightest chance of northern presidency arguing that he enjoys the power of incumbency and that no other candidate from the north will muster the kind of political clout and goodwill like himself to upstage the rival parties who may decide to field a strong candidate from the east.

Vice President Namadi Sambo is said to enjoy close relationship with Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'aad Abubakar and former Civilian President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari.

However, the Vice President was said to have avoided personal indication on his presidential ambition for fear of reprisal from Jonathan and the South-east who are still studding the political environment and does not want to make strong agitation for the presidency in other not to distract Jonathan who got massive support from the Zone.

Competent sources said that a though president Goodluck Jonathan has not given a serious thought on the issue of his successor in 2015, he is said to be all the same concerned about the agitation of the Igbos who massively voted for him in the April 2011, elections.

“The President would not want to be seen as an ungrateful person if he does anything to block the aspiration of the Igbos. National Daily sources disclosed that one of those northerners who enjoy the president's respect and may get his endorsement for the 2015 presidency battle is business mogul, Alhaji Aliko Dangote. 'The President and the industrialist have become very close and insiders are wondering if it is only a relationship based on economy interest.

Dangote is always seen in Aso Rock, the seat of federal government these days. The president seemed have fueled such speculation with his recent appointment of Dangote as a member of the economic team, chairman of the strategic employment creation committee and made him one of the few private sector operatives ever to be awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger, (GCON), the second highest national honour. The president was full of encomium for Dangote during the award presentation.

“Dangote is a special entrepreneur who employs more 20,000 Nigerians. For us in Aso Rock, this is something uncommon,” the President said. The interpretation in certain quarters is that Jonathan is preparing Dangote for higher responsibilities which some Analyst say is the presidency. Two camps now exist in Aso Rock, the Namadi Sambo camp and Aliko Dangote camp.

However, source close to President Jonathan dismiss the Dangote option as mere speculation asking how can a business man of such stature abandon his business for politics?

Namadi Sambo and Aliko Dangote are not the only two chieftains of PDP who have been linked to the presidency in 2015. There is Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, who is said to be nursing the ambition of giving the presidency a third shot. Atiku had the best chance of winning the presidential election in 2003 but apparently failed because he cross carpeted to the nascent Action Congress because of his disagreement with Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in 2011 he scampered back to PDP after being endorsed by some conservative northern leaders.

Now, Atiku is said to be mending faces, building new bridges and gathering additional war chest to prosecute his 2015 political ambition.

Meanwhile, competent sources have revealed that the recent positive moves by the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, to organize a peace and unity conference is said to have been inspired by Sambo. It was not only geared at finding solution to the Boko Haram problem but an effort to galvanize the north towards presenting a common front and to avoid anything that will portray the region as being the source of the nation's persistent crisis.

This he foresaw, could create insurmountable instability and may ultimately led to the dismembering of the country as predicted by United States analyst.

A 4-year-old stray cat that was rescued from the streets of Rome has inherited a $13 million fortune from its owner, the wealthy widow of an Italian property tycoon.

Maria Assunta left the fortune to her beloved kitty Tommaso when she died two weeks ago at the age of 94, reports ABC News Blogs.

The feline's newfound riches include cash, as well as properties in Rome, Milan and land in Calabria.

As her health began to fail two years ago, Assunta, who had no children, began to seek out a way to see that Tommaso was properly cared for after she died. In November 2009, she bequeathed her entire estate to the alley cat that she'd rescued.

Initially, Assunta had instructed her attorneys to "identify an animal welfare association or group to which to leave the estate and the commitment of looking after Tommaso," according to the Daily Telegraph.

Unable to find a satisfactory association to see to it that Tommaso was loved and cared for, Assunta decided to leave all her money to the cat via her nurse, Stefania, who cared for her until her dying day. Her last name has not been disclosed.

"She had become very fond towards the nurse who assisted her," Anna Orecchioni, one of the lawyers, told Il Messaggero newspaper.

"We're convinced that Stefania is the right person to carry out the old lady's wishes. She loves animals just like the woman she devoted herself to right up until the end."

Stefania told the Telegraph that she had no idea the woman that she was caring for was so incredibly wealthy.

"The old lady suffered from loneliness," the nurse said. "She looked after that cat more than you'd look after a son.

"I promised her that I would look after the cat when she was no longer around. She wanted to be sure that Tommaso would be loved and cuddled. But I never imagined that she had this sort of wealth," she said. "She was very discreet and quite. I knew very little of her private life. She only told me that she had suffered from loneliness a lot."

Tommaso and Stefania, along with another cat, are living outside Rome at an address that is undisclosed, so to avoid con artists and potential kidnappers.

"We have gotten lots of email messages from candidates who wanted to adopt the little Tommasino," the cat's lawyer told ABC News.

The windfall for Tommaso places him No.3 on the list of wealthy pets, behind Kalu the chimp, whose owner left him $80 million dollars, and top dog Gunther IV, a German shepherd who inherited $372 million dollars from his father, Gunther III, the beloved companion of an eccentric German countess.

Real estate magnate Leona Helmsley famously left $12 million to her little dog Trouble, although her human descendents contested, and Trouble's pot was cut to $2 million.
