Fluorescent lights get their glow from the mercury trapped inside, and the compact fluorescents (CFLs) used for energy efficient household lighting are the same. Mercury is toxic, exposure and handling broken fluorescent bulbs is very risky.

Mercury poisoning (also known as hydrargyria or mercurialism) is a type of metal poisoning and a medical condition caused by exposure to mercury or its compounds. Elemental mercury does cause damage by blocking blood vessels. Toxic effects include damage to the brain, kidneys and lungs. Mercury poisoning can result in several diseases, including acrodynia (pink disease), Hunter-Russell syndrome, and Minamata disease.

Symptoms typically include sensory impairment (vision, hearing, speech), disturbed sensation and a lack of coordination. The type and degree of symptoms exhibited depend upon the individual toxin, the dose, and the method and duration of exposure.


Standard Mercury Cleanup Guide
If you break a new fluorescent bulb, it will release more mercury than a spent bulb will release. If you break a fluorescent bulb, you’ll need to be careful to clean up the area while avoiding or minimizing your exposure to the mercury.
Here’s how to safely handle fluorescent bulbs:
• When handling fluorescent bulbs on carpeted surfaces, put a drop cloth down to prevent contamination if a bulb breaks. Because it can be difficult to remove mercury contamination from carpets, it’s best to remove and replace the carpet if a bulb breaks onto it.
• Put on rubber gloves to protect yourself from broken glass.
• If you break a bulb, open the windows in the area and then leave; let the air clear for 15 minutes to reduce mercury vapor levels before returning to clean up the broken bulb. The room should be ventilated for several hours after the bulb breaks.
• Keep people and pets out of the area until cleanup is complete.
• Prepare a sealable container that will hold all broken glass and materials used to cleanup and that will prevent further release of mercury vapors.
• Carefully pick up large pieces of glass and put them in the prepared disposal container.
• Use two stiff pieces of paper, such as index cards, to collect smaller shards and dust.
• Use sticky tape, such as duct tape or packing tape, to pat the area and pick up fine particles.
• Go over the area with a damp paper towel to clean up the finest particles.
• Put all debris and cleanup materials into the prepared disposal container and label as “Universal Waste—broken lamp.”
• Place the sealed container in an appropriate storage area for universal waste; when it is ultimately discarded, it should be disposed of as universal waste.
• Wash your gloves, then remove them and wash your hands and face.
Don’t use a vacuum cleaner or broom to clean up broken fluorescent bulbs. Vacuuming or sweeping will spread mercury vapor and dust throughout the area and contaminate the vacuum.
LEDs offer better energy efficiency, longer lifespans, and zero mercury inside the bulbs. If the higher price tag is a deal breaker, then consider halogens. The gas each one uses to prolong the bulb’s lifespan is totally harmless. A broken CFL might be an annoying chore to deal with, but it’s also an opportunity to upgrade to a bulb that’s a better fit for your home.

The use of toxic pesticides to manage pest problems has become a common practice around the world. Pesticides are used in agricultural fields, homes, parks, schools, buildings, forests, and roads thus can be found in the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink and even in breast milk

The World Health Organization (1992) reported that roughly three million pesticide poisonings occur annually and result in 220,000 deaths worldwide. Pesticides have been linked to a wide range of human health hazards, ranging from short-term impacts such as headaches and nausea to chronic impacts like

Cancer – leukemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, brain, bone, breast, ovarian, prostate, testicular, kidney and liver cancers)

Fertility harm – some pesticides including dibromochlorophane and 2,4-D has been associated with impaired fertility, genetic alterations in sperm, a reduced number of sperm, damage to germinal epithelium and altered hormone function.

Neurological effect – the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease is 70% greater in those exposed to even low levels of pesticides. Both insecticides and herbicides significantly increase the risk of Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

Endocrine disruption – such as infertility, birth defects, developmental defects in offspring, hormonal imbalance, incomplete sexual development, impaired brain development, behavioral disorders, and many others. Examples of known endocrine disrupting chemicals which are present in large quantities in our environment include ( DDT (which still persists in abundance more than 20 years after being banned in the U.S.), lindane, atrazine, carbaryl, parathion etc.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) – is a medical condition characterized by the body’s inability to tolerate relatively low exposure to chemicals. Symptoms include dizziness, cardiovascular problems, depression, muscle and joint pains.
Others are nerve, skin, and eye irritation and damage, headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and systemic poisoning, pulmonary edema, dermatitis, respiratory problems like asthma, memory disorders, depression and the list is endless.

In May 2010, scientists from the University of Montreal and Harvard University released a study that found that exposure to pesticide residues on vegetables and fruit may double a child’s risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a condition that can cause inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity in children.

Safety Measures
All pesticides have the potential to be harmful to humans, animals, other living organisms, and the environment if used incorrectly. Ways to eliminate or at least reduce exposure include:

Wear Personal Protecting Equipment PPE such as nose mask, coverall, chemical resistant gloves, rubber boots, etc)

Use a low-toxicity pesticide when available.
Reading the label and practicing safe work habits will minimize hazards from the use of pesticides.

Store pesticides in their original containers and keep the original label attached to the container. Store in a locked cabinet and/or on a high shelf to keep out of the reach of children

Better testing. State and federal agencies should require stricter independent testing, including testing of synergistic effects of pesticides. Pesticides known or suspected of causing human health problems should be phased out.

Protect our children. Ensure strict non-toxic pest management programs for schools and homes.

Pesticide Use Reduction.
Prohibit pollution of our water and poisoning of our communities. Prevent pesticide applications to water bodies, instead using non-chemical methods of managing aquatic invasive weeds.

Education: Provide free and universal notification to residents about pesticide use, including who is using chemicals, where, when, how, what pesticides are being used, and why.

Protect workers. Provide protection to workers and farmers to prevent acute and chronic pesticide poisoning by reducing exposure and ensure appropriate use of PPE.

The problem is what we call enjoyment in Nigeria are mostly our waterloo, , eating junks and not resting. The truth i've come to terms wit is that a lot of these despised mlm products like GNLD, Edmark, Forever living can actually save us a lot of stress if we look beyond their prices. i personally use Edmark and Swissgarde products and i can say authoritatively that they work.

really, there are different types of water and i must tell you that the best water to drink is ionized water that has a negative ORP and is alkaline. water is life indeed but not the water we generally drink like pure water, bottled water etc.

the toilet disease thing is a real embarrassment and from the much i've read and experienced about it, all these over the counter drugs worsen matters for the patient as they result in what is called reccurent yeast infection. the cause is actually due to overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina especially, pls note that the yeast infection could be on the skin, penis and in the mouth also, it is attacks in moist parts of the body.
