President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria Farmers in Ekiti State have expressed their worries over the delay in getting assistance from the Federal Government to develop and expand their farms ahead of this year’s farming season. Mr James Kupoluyi, the spokesman of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Ikole Local Government Area told NAN on Thursday that the delay might have negative impacts on the current farming season if not addressed urgently. He disclosed that the Federal Government in the third quarter of 2015, directed every farmer in Nigeria to register for a programme tagged “Nigeria Agricultural Payment Initiative” (NAPI), with the aim of assisting farmers. “Many of us registered and have been waiting since then but have not get the assistance from the government to expand our farms. “Some of us who are pensioners cannot afford hiring tractors to either plough our farmlands or buy seedlings and other necessary things to start effective farming because pension allowances are not paid as and when due. “We call on the Federal Government to fulfill its promises of assisting farmers now that the planting season has commenced,” he said. He expressed fears that late distribution of seedlings, inputs and delay in providing loans and other incentives would bring a setback to the economic diversification to agriculture as planned by the Federal Government. Kupoluyi also appealed to government to address the problem of Fulani herdsmen that were destroying farms across the country to save the country from food shortage. The Department of State Security (DSS) yesterday paraded Bello Danhajiya, a Fulani from Zamfara State and a strategic accomplice of Al-Barnawi. Danhajiya, who is presumed to be second in command, disclosed his involvement in gun-running, cattle rustling and other nefarious criminal activities principally on the directives of his commander, Al-Barnawi. It would be recalled that the service had announced last week the arrest of Khalid Al-Barnawi, known for his leadership and notoriety in terrorism activities in Nigeria. Nigerians were also informed of his talent-spotting and recruitment of young people into the Ansaru/Boko Haram terrorist groups. Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has written to the Chinese government, seeking the stoppage of the $2 billion loan being sought by the federal government of Nigeria.http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/fayose-writes-chinese-govt-not-to-give-loan-to-nigeria/142494.html |
The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has said the Federal Government should not use the report of a military panel set up to investigate the June 21, 2014 Ekiti governorship election. Fayose, who spoke through the Ekiti State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Owoweni Ajayi, on Wednesday, said the verdict of the Supreme Court on the governorship election was superior to that of any tribunal. Fayose said that the report could not be used to prosecute the members of the Ekiti Peoples Democratic Party alleged to have been culpable in the rigging of the election. In an open letter written by the commissioner to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, Fayose said that plans were afoot by the Federal Government to prosecute Ekiti PDP members over the alleged rigging. The state government said that the Supreme Court had put the contentious issues arising from the petition by the All Progressives Congress over the election to rest by delivering a judgment in favour of the governor and the PDP. The letter said, “Although the AGF is vested with prosecutorial powers under Section 174 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the powers are neither absolute nor unlimited and they must be exercised with due caution and regard for the rule of law.” It said the propriety or otherwise of the election had been decided from the tribunal level up to the Supreme Court and that any other panel, whether military or otherwise, could not sit over judgment on any matter already decided by the apex court. According to the governor, the sanctity of the judicial process and respect for the principles of federalism must be adhered to always. “Unless an alleged criminal act constitutes an offence under a federal enactment, the Attorney General of the Federation will definitely be acting ultra vires by any purported move to prosecute an alleged offender before any state or federal court in Nigeria without a fiat by the Attorney General of the respective state, vested with constitutional jurisdiction to prosecute criminal matters under the state law. “Although the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) is a federal enactment, which creates several offences triable only in the magistrate or high court of a state in which the offence is committed, prosecution of such offences can only be undertaken by the Independent National Electoral Commission, upon a recommendation made to it by an Election Petition Tribunal for the prosecution of any person or individual disclosed in an election petition or upon findings, after a thorough investigation by the police.” Cc; lalasticlala https://www.today.ng/politics/106231/you-cant-use-military-report-ekiti-poll-prosecute-fayose-tells |

China has offered Nigeria a loan worth $6bn to fund infrastructure projects, the Nigerian foreign minister said on Tuesday. The announcement came as both countries signed a currency swap deal to boost trade. Nigeria has been in talks with China on an infrastructure loan for months. Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy and its top oil producer. But its public finances have suffered as the price of crude oil dropped around the world. Although President Muhammadu Buhari wants to triple capital spending in 2016, he also needs to plug a projected deficit of $11.1bn. “It is a credit that is on the table as soon as we identify the projects,” Nigerian Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama told reporters after Buhari met Chinese President Xi Jinping. “It won’t need an agreement to be signed. It is just to identify the projects and we access it.” There was no immediate comment from China. Lin Songtian, director general of the Chinese foreign ministry’s African affairs department, had earlier said Nigeria would be able to benefit from a $55bn package for Africa, which mostly consists of concessional grants or export lines. The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Ltd (ICBC), the world’s biggest lender, and Nigeria’s central bank also signed a deal on yuan transactions. “It means that the renminbi (yuan) is free to flow among different banks in Nigeria, and the renminbi has been included in the foreign exchange reserves of Nigeria,” Lin said. Nigeria had said it was looking at panda bonds – yuan-denominated bonds sold by overseas entities on the mainland – to fund the deficit, saying they that would be cheaper than Eurobonds. Nigeria’s central bank has said it plans to diversify its foreign exchange reserves away from the dollar by switching some into yuan. It converted up to a tenth of its reserves into yuan five years ago. Lin said a framework on currency swaps has been agreed with Nigeria, making it easier to settle trade deals in yuan. China has signed similar swap agreements with countries ranging from Kazakhstan to Argentina to promote wider use of its yuan. Beijing also signed agreements to develop infrastructure in Nigeria, part of a drive to deepen its ties with Africa. ICBC agreed a $2bn loan to Dangote, the company owned by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, to fund two cement plants it plans, he told Reuters. China’s Xi told Buhari there was huge potential for economic cooperation in areas like oil refining and mining, according to Xinhua, China’s official news agency. In a speech to business leaders, Buhari said both countries wanted to work together in agriculture, fishing and the manufacturing of cars, construction materials and textiles. Kemi Olunloyo, the daughter of former Oyo state governor, Victor Omololu Olunloyo, is not through with her name-calling! Ina recent interview with PulseTV, the social media personality claim that former aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode had a relationship with ex-ambassador, Bianca Ojukwu and even got her pregnant twice when they were younger. Fani-Kayode and Bianca Recall that in 2013, while trying to defend himself against tribalism allegations, Fani-Kayode spoke about the relationship. He said “I was not a tribalist when I had a long-standing and intimate relationship with Bianca Onoh, an Igbo lady, who later married Colonel Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the leader of Biafra and who is now our Ambassador in Spain,” Fani-Kayode said at the time. However, Fani-Kayode’s claims were denied by Bianca who said that she had never met him in person. She went further to threaten to sue him for the statement, but she never did. Ms Olunloyo made the claim in the interview saying: Kemi Omololu-Olunloyo “Fani-Kayode was dating Bianca, Fani-Kayode was in Cambridge, I’ve seen Bianca in Fani-Kayode’s room many times, loved up and everything. So when this thing happened, Femi called me… Femi needed someone to defend him… Everybody didn’t want to get involved, but I stood up for Femi. “It’s true, they went out, and she got pregnant twice…The first pregnancy was a miscarriage…they were supposed to get married, they were engaged already, but Bianca didn’t want to go out with Fani-Kayode anymore so she had an abortion…I’m saying it on camera now, she had an abortion,” she added.
