Education / Buhari Sacks 2,000 Varsity Workers by hod898(m): 6:57am On Dec 19, 2015
Buhari Sacks 2000 Varsity Workers

Fidelis Soriwei and Friday Olokor, Abuja

The Senior Staff Association of the Nigerian Universities has called for an indefinite strike on December 24, 2015 to protest a recent decision of the Federal Government to sack 2,000 university workers across the country by January, 2016.

The National President of SSANU, Mr. Samson Ugwoke, said during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday that the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, and the National Universities Commission had written letters of termination to 2,000 members of staff of the universities.

Ugwoke said that the senior staff union of the universities had already dispatched letters to the Ministry of Education, the NUC and the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission to withdraw the letters of termination issued to varsity workers of the University of Ilorin, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto and others.

He said that SSANU also urged the Education Ministry and the other agencies to ensure immediate withdrawal of similar letters to vice chancellors to terminate the appointment of personnel of university staff primary schools.

He said the letter dated December 17, 2015 also copied President Muhammadu Buhari, the President of Senate, Bukola Saraki, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige and others.

Ugwoke added that the 2,000 workers affected in the planned retrenchment exercise were drawn from 31 universities and were employed by the councils of the various institutions to make the requisite contribution to educational development in the institutions and the society over the years.

The SSANU leader noted that the directive to sack the workers who are expected to leave service in January 2016 was contained in a circular said to have been written and signed by a Deputy Director in the Ministry of Education, Mr. E.O Fayemi, on behalf of the minister.

He stated further that the circular dated April 21, 2015, was attached with a memorandum and report from the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission dated March 2014 and February 2014 respectively.

According to him, the commission responded to the circular by directing the removal of personnel of staff schools and other institutions affiliated to the universities from the payroll.

He said, “The implementation of this directive would be a gross violation and breach of the SSANU/FGN 2009 Agreement, which explicitly stated that the University shall bear full capital and recurrent cost of University Staff primary schools.

“It is further shocking to note that till date, the Federal Ministry of Defence still funds the capital and recurrent costs of over 100 Army Children Schools, Command Children Schools, Navy Primary Schools and Air Force Schools; while the Ministry of Police Affairs still funds its Police Children Schools, all from the Federal Treasury.

“We are surprised that an agency of government, the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, could continue with this callous, wicked, insensitive and ill-intentioned agenda, despite our calls, letters, press releases and publications on the issue.

“With the advent of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, we had written series of public and confidential letters on same with no positive response.”

He said that 90 per cent of the pupils of the university staff schools were children of the staff of the institutions stressing that the schools were established alongside other academic components of the universities in some cases.

The unionist said SSANU had to give the December 24, 2015 deadline to the Federal Government as part of the efforts to prevent the over 2000 workers of the universities from being sacked.

Several efforts by Saturday PUNCH to get the response of ASUU National President, Dr. Nasir Fagge, was resisted because he said, “I am out of the country and you don’t expect me to answer you from abroad.

Also when contacted, the Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of State for Education, Anthony Akuneme, directed our correspondent to the office of the Education Minister, Adamu Adamu.

But several calls and SMS to the Assistant Director of Press in the Education Ministry, Abdul Onu, were not replied.

Politics / Muslims Converting To Christianity After ISIS Atrocities by hod898(m): 6:21pm On Dec 17, 2015
Nearly 200,000 Muslims of the Yazidi tribe are fleeing Northern Iraq due to the current atrocities of ISIS. Many of these fugitives are turning to Christianity after seeing the stark contrast in behavior of the members of the two religions, true to the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 7:16-20 that they will know us by our fruit.

The refugees report finding their neighbors turning on them and persecuting them. They see fellow Islamists executing many Christians and Muslims and taking their wives and daughters as slaves or for sexual purposes. One recent convert states, “The kindness and generosity of Christians creates a gap between their faith and Muslims as great as that between earth and sky. While our fellow Muslims betrayed us, the Christians showed us real humanity and love.”

Is there a source to this? Regardless, with the various news emanating from different parts of Nigeria it isn't unwise to say that Goodluck Jonathan was holding many things together to prevent a political and economical crash; and when he was defeated in the last elections, he let the kite fly away with the storm. Buhari's administration should have considered what it's predecessor was doing to prevent too much turbulence in Nigeria before been all repulsive

There isn't any better; they are both significant. The main determinant is where your passion lies. I don't suppose you would go for any course given to you, yes? Are you afraid a HND degree will not secure a job, or the course you are currently studying does not interest you? Either way, I would recommend passion over degree.

Students should focus on striving to be the best they can be in their various careers of pursuit through thorough self development whilst keeping up with their school work, than merely reflecting Garbage-in Garbage-out course grades and deceiving themselves with being in the best of schools.

Really, a one Nigeria will be far better off than a segregated one. But given the Federal Government's unheeding stance to the Biafra agitators, most 'Biafrans' would find more reason for secession from Nigeria. The Federal government might think this is just a set of sour grapes with a superfluous agenda, but this is more; it is a national concern and an Achilles heel to the supposedly unbreakable Nigeria. It's either President Buhari shows concern in a Democratic manner, or Biafra actualizes a banner.

Politics / Salary Cut Not Enough, PDP Tells Buhari by hod898(m): 7:11pm On Jul 14, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party has told President Muhamamdu Buhari and his deputy, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, that cutting their salaries will not be the only thing Nigerians are expecting from them.
Rather, the party said the President and his party, the All Progressives Congress, must strive to fulfil their electioneering promises.
Moreover, the party said that salary is a mere drop in the ocean of personal allowances and privileges that come to the president.

The main opposition party, which had been ruling Nigerian since 1999 until it was defeated during the last general elections, also said rejection of official cars by the President won’t be enough to sway the expectations of the voters from the new government.
National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, stated this in a statement he signed in Abuja on Tuesday.
T he President and his deputy on Friday, announced 50 per cent cut in their own salaries.
The President also, on Thursday, rejected new bullet proofs cars worth over N400m.
While Metuh said that the PDP appreciated the gestures by the President, he insisted that the APC was over-dramatising the achievements of the Federal Government.
Metuh therefore warned Buhari against celebrating what he called “cosmetic governance.”
Metuh said his party believed that there was a need to bring to the President’s notice certain indices, he said, if not properly corrected, were capable of derailing the smooth running of his (Buhari’s) administration.
He said in the statement, “It is incontrovertible that instead of focusing on the promises you made to Nigerians and on policy thrusts that will move our economy forward, the ruling party has been made to be very high on propaganda, deceitful engagement and cosmetic governance.

“We believe you should extricate yourself from these agents of propaganda who continue to believe that Nigerians would be swayed by these cosmetic interventions instead of real business of government.
“As the leader of the most populous black nation in the world, we believe you should not allow your Presidency to be pushed into the gimmicks of playing to the gallery and attempting to use the dramatisation of promissory notes and pledges by foreign interests, false premature claims of victory against insurgency.
“Dramatisation of salary cut and rejection of official cars, all to gain cheap popularity and create an impression that the government is on course when in the actual fact, the new administration has not been able to locate a bearing since its inauguration in May.

“While we appreciate the symbolic gesture by Mr. President in ‘cutting’ his N14 million annual basic salary by 50 percent, it should be noted that Nigerians would not be wavered by the N7million annual donation and rejection of official cars, and forget their expectations for the implementation of his long list of campaign promises for which he was elected into office.”
Metuh added that the Presidency should know that “these orchestration,” no matter how populist it may seem, does not in any way address the burning issues of employment, alleged worsening security situation and decline in the economy.

He said the President should also be aware of the continued slide of the Naira which, he said, has dipped from under N200 to the dollar in May to an all time low of N238 under the APC administration among others.
Moreover, Metuh said that Nigerians cannot therefore be deluded by impressions aimed to make government appear to be on course when, he said, it has only been a case of what he called all motion, no movement, spiced with unnecessary excuses.
He said Nigerians are now agitated that this government has failed to hit the ground running as it promised.
For example, he said they had been complaining about the inability of the President to unveil his cabinet two weeks after his inauguration.
Besides, he said two months after, the President has not been able to decide on key appointments such as ministers, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, a Chief of Staff and advisers in key sectors of the economy.
Metuh said Nigerians are still eager for information regarding the five million new jobs, monthly N5,000 each to 25 million poor citizens, monthly allowance to discharged but unemployed Youth Corps members, free meals to school children and bringing the Naira to the same value with the dollar; among other promises upon which you and your party gained access to power.

Politics / Nigerians Are Nigeria’s Worst Enemy- TUNDE FAGBENLE by hod898(m): 6:57pm On Jul 05, 2015
JULY 5, 2015 : TUNDE FAGBENLE

I’m not alone in observing the sudden and dramatic upswing in power supply in the country in the last few weeks, precisely since (retired General) Muhammadu Buhari took over the reins of power as Nigeria’s President. Many Nigerians have equally noted this ‘phenomenon’ especially in the social media and in group talks. It is the talk in homes; it is the talk in schools; it is the talk in the marketplace.
The power supply has not only been reasonably regular, it has not come with any of the old fluctuations. Ay, in my home, for the first time in perhaps years we have had power steadily for two days-and-nights at a go; and when it went in the last three weeks it has been for no more than a few hours before getting back! Alas, the generator and inverter – utilities of forced capital investment – have been alarmingly idle.
Erroneously, some have attributed the change to President Buhari’s ‘change mantra’ in a manner to suggest the new government has done something, invested anew, in the sector to bring about the positive change.

Of course nothing of the sort has happened. Buhari-government has not settled down well enough to throw anything, money or person, at the sector if it has worked out what to do in the first place. So what has happened? Where have the DISCOS found the music to which the new dance steps are taken?
What has happened, in my opinion, is sheer attitudinal change by the same people, who have over the years, frequently thrown us without compunction into darkness. In that regard and that regard only, Buhari’s coming and his fabled no-nonsense reputation can take the credit. The mere thought that ‘a new Sheriff is in town’ whose government will not tolerate the corruption and ineptitude of the past and would only in a matter of time call you to question, was enough to make the same people act differently.
Human factor, what many cynically call “the Nigerian factor” has been responsible for many of the ills that plague us. To just think of the billions of naira, nay of dollars, that has been thrown at the power sector from eight years of Obasanjo to four of Yar’Adua/Jonathan, to another four of Jonathan, with not a flicker of light more enjoyed by Nigerians, and then this? Nevertheless, credit to whom it is due, even if the ‘restructuring’ President Jonathan effected in the sector occasioning the arrival of DISCOS and GENCOS did not immediately yield an improvement to the power enjoyed by the people, Jonathan deserves credit for putting in place the structure that has made the new attitudinal change of the operators yield fruit.
The ‘human factor’, the attention to detail, the commitment to excellence, makes all the difference; that much I have told folks over the years.
Take the printing industry for an example. Years back when the popular German printing machine, KORD 64, ruled the printing waves, the job that is produced by the same machine in, say, England seems light years apart from the job our printers come up with here in Nigeria. No one ever believed it was the same KORD 64 that did such seemingly ‘magical’ feat of producing spotlessly clean, glossy, magazines or books, with one copy virtually identical, page-to-page, to all others, even if a million copies were printed! Here in Nigeria our printers would wonder at your state of mind for not appreciating that a spot here and there, unevenness in colour here and there, are ‘inescapable’ of any printed matter, even if only a few copies are done! With glee, our printers would see a perfect looking printed matter and themselves straightaway excuse it as a “done abroad”, an “oyinbo” job!
What goes for the printing industry goes for every facet of our lives. You visit an office or home, say an IITA in Ibadan, or a Chevron in Lekki, Lagos, not to talk of the premises of any European or American embassy, and you know you are “not in Nigeria”! You know this is an Oyinbo place. Yet majority of the workers, all the labourers that wrought the lawn and environment ‘magic’, are Nigerians. All it takes is for one “ oyinbo ” to be at the top and it makes all the difference in the Nigerian’s attitude to work, effecting: promptitude, cleanliness, dedication, attention to detail, strive for perfection, etc. It is sickening.
For now, I can sit back and enjoy the unfailing and non-fluctuating electricity that means I can do this column for the hours it may take without panic of ‘NEPA’ striking, as my kids still insist on declaiming the power authority. Hurray!
APC, moving beyond the crisis
When an aburo of mine called me late at night some days ago wondering why I have not commented on the ongoing National Assembly imbroglio that has brought suspension of formal activities at the legislative chambers, I wasted no time in telling him I have no interest in it and so have not followed it in any great detail. Indeed I am disgusted by it all.
In similar vein, another reader, a Mrs. Sinatu Ojikutu, pressed me in her text to “revisit the issue of restructuring”, wondering whether, “now that power has changed hands” what had always been “advocated” by the ‘Progressives’, “sovereign national conference” will see the light of day.
I say, we are an unserious people, the politicians and the rest of us. We are a people who, as the saying goes, want to eat omelette without breaking eggs! We do not want to suffer changes or embark on drastic measures that will bring about the positive developmental changes we want, yet we want ‘change.’

But let me say my two-kobo piece on the ‘shock,’ untoward, welcome-treatment the new ruling party APC suffered at the National Assembly for which they are crying foul from the rooftop.
I have read and heard some of the name-calling and denigration visited on Dr. Bukola Saraki for going against the wish of his party and upstaging the party’s choice for senate president. He is accused of “back-stabbing”, of “prostituting” with his erstwhile PDP (now opposition) party. A lot of hogwash, if you ask me. I don’t know the young man, Saraki; never met him. But I see no difference in him, in his behaviour, or in his character, that is any different from what the whole generation of politicians now on parade, almost bar none, offer of themselves. They all will go to bed, excuse the pun, with anyone, friend or foe, without batting an eyelid when it serves them well. And I don’t want to hear some holier-than-thou cry from any quarter. We have seen them all ‘porting’ from one party to another with ease and as it suits their time and purpose. We have seen ‘sworn’ enemies for whom many followers have gone into mortal battle one day embrace themselves right in public view the next. Examples abound and needless to list here. And what APC has now ‘suffered’ in the National Assembly through shenanigans of ‘treacherous’ voting is no different from what the APC party itself inflicted on the PDP (via Tambuwal) not long ago.
We are at a level of political development that is still evolving, and aspects of UK’s parliamentary system of democracy are mating and confusing the US Presidential system we lay claim to. Methinks President Buhari’s claim to non-interference with the legislature is either naïve or complicit. If it is naïve it is ‘complicit’; if it is complicit it is ‘naïve’! Without necessarily recommending an Obasanjo leadership style – whereby Senate Presidents and House Speakers were changed at his whim through machinations of money and EFCC – Buhari must know that as President he is also the leader of his party and must not give the wrong signal, in words or body language – of a weak or complicit leader.
Lessons learnt, APC must move on, embrace Senate President Saraki warts and all, and build a united front against future onslaughts’; not by some incongruous regional-party style leadership, but by recognising the delicate balancing, the give-and-take, demand of a multi-region, multi-nation, agglomeration.

Politics / Keep Praying For Buhari – Jonathan by hod898(m): 6:40pm On Jul 05, 2015
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to continue supporting and praying for his successor, President Muhammadu Buhari, as terrorist activities intensify.
Jonathan said this on his official Facebook page on Sunday while reacting to the Church bombing in Yobe which left over six people dead.

The former President, who has been silent for several weeks, said the Sunday attack was a sad reminder that the war against terror is a task for all Nigerians and not only the armed forces.
He said, “The death of any Nigerian at the hands of terrorists is a sad reminder that the war on terror is a task for all Nigerians not just the armed forces. I urge all Nigerians to continue to pray for peace in Nigeria and to support the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari as the government does its best to bring an end to these acts of terror and secure all Nigerians. May God bless Nigeria.”
