We've been awarded a contract to provide main front-end engineering design (FEED Phase II) services for the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP) project. The engineering study is progressing in accordance with the initial project planning.

When completed, the over 7,000 km long gas pipeline, being promoted by Office National des Hydrocarbures et des Mines (ONHYM) of Morocco and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) of Nigeria, will link Nigeria with Morocco, cross 11 west African countries and extend to Europe. It will be the longest offshore pipeline in the world and the second longest pipeline overall.

The NMGP pipeline is expected to traverse 13 countries, and will help to boost local industries and economies by delivering a reliable and sustainable energy source. It will also support industrial development and create employment opportunities.

Additionally, the pipeline will provide a new avenue for countries along the route to export their gas to their neighboring countries and Europe. Delivering this project requires expertise from all over the world.

The overall FEED services will be managed by Intecsea BV, our offshore engineering consultancy business in The Hague, the Netherlands. This includes the development of the project implementation framework and supervision of the engineering survey.

The onshore FEED scope, the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and Land Acquisition Studies (LAS) will be delivered by our team in London, UK. The project will also be supported by our network of offices in Africa, and our global integrated delivery team in Hyderabad, India.

Advisian, our global consulting business, will explore the acceleration of electrification and the feasibility of energy self-sufficiency in the region. Our UK and Madrid offices will set out the potential to use renewable energy resources to power the pipeline and reduce the project’s carbon footprint.

Chinese national jailed 20 years for torturing mine workers in Rwanda

A Chinese national has been sentenced to 20 years in jail for torturing local mineworkers in Rwanda after a video showing him whipping a man tied to a post went viral on social media. Sun Shujun, the manager of a mine in the west of the country, was convicted on Tuesday along with an accomplice following his arrest last September.

“It is clear that (Sun) tortured the victims and issued corporal punishment with malicious intent, and this is a grave crime,” judge Jacques Kanyarukiga ruled, ordering him to serve a 20-year term in prison. Sun, who was in court for the verdict, acknowledged assaulting two workers, saying he beat them because he was “frustrated and fed up of them constantly stealing minerals”.

The 43-year-old had argued for his release, saying he compensated the two by paying a total of more than one million Rwandan francs ($1,000) and signing a “reconciliation letter”. However, the prosecution – which had accused him of assaulting four people – argued that the victims had accepted the payments “because they were traumatised and afraid of him”.

Another manager at the company, Ali Group Holding Ltd, was found guilty of helping Sun and sentenced to 12 years in jail. A third defendant was found not guilty. Last September, a 45-second clip of one incident was widely shared on Twitter, showing a visibly enraged Chinese man using a rope to flog a man huddled on the ground and tied to a pole, as a small group of people in orange jackets looked on.

The mine produces cassiterite, a mineral that is the main ore of tin. After the verdict by the court in the district of Rutsiro, Sun – who had been free on bail – was put into handcuffs and taken away by guards. He has up to 30 days to appeal. The Chinese embassy in Rwanda said in a statement that it had “taken note” of the ruling.

“The embassy always asks Chinese citizens in Rwanda to abide by local laws and regulations,” it said. “The embassy calls for the case to be handled appropriately in a rational, fair and just manner, and requests the legitimate rights of Chinese citizens to be properly protected.”

Rwanda and China enjoy good relations and last year marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

Germany and France has sold weapons to Russia amid sanctions

According to an EU analysis document released by The Telegraph, #France and Germany sold 273 million euros in weapons to Russia between 2015 and 2020. These weapons are currently being used during the occupation of #Ukraine. Military equipment sold to Russia by EU countries includes bombs, missiles, rockets, and cannons. It is noted that sales continue despite EU sanctions imposed after Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014. According to a report by the European Commission, at least 10 EU member states have sold arms worth €350 million [$379 million] to Russia in violation of sanctions. French and German defense companies are responsible for 78% of these sales. EU countries determined to continue arms sales to Russia continue to spend 1 billion euros a day on energy supplies from Russia since the start of the war. Advocating the sale of weapons, Berlin noted that the weapons were committed to be used “for civilian use only.”
