Wagner mercenaries trained Hamas militants for operations against Israel

Wagner Group mercenaries who left Belarus for Africa were involved in training and transferring combat experience to the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which attacked Israel on Oct. 7, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s National Resistance Center has claimed.

The key areas of training for Hamas units were assault training and the use of small unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) to drop explosives.

Hezbollah “fully ready” to carry out action when time comes, deputy chief says

Hezbollah deputy chief Naim Qassem said in Beirut, Lebanon, on Friday that the group would not be swayed by calls for it to stay on the sidelines of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, saying the party was "fully ready" to contribute to the fighting.

"The behind-the-scenes calls with us by great powers, Arab countries, envoys of the United Nations, directly and indirectly telling us not to interfere will have no effect," he told supporters gathered in the southern Beirut suburb.

"We as Hezbollah contribute to the confrontation and will contribute to it within our vision and our plan. We follow the moves of the enemy, and we are fully ready. When the time comes for any action, we will carry it out," Qassem added.

The group has already clashed with Israel across the Lebanese border multiple times in the past week, following the assault by Hamas against Israeli towns and Israel's retaliatory bombardment of the Gaza Strip. But sources say Hezbollah has designed its moves so far to be limited in scope, preventing a big spillover into Lebanon while keeping Israeli forces occupied.

Qassem is the most senior Hezbollah official to speak publicly about the violence, while Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has not yet commented on developments.

Teacher killed, 2 people wounded in suspected terrorist attack at French school

PARIS — A man armed with a knife killed a teacher at the high school in northern France that he once attended, and critically wounded another teacher and a security guard Friday, authorities said, an attack being investigated as potential terrorism amid soaring global tensions over the war between Israel and Hamas.

French anti-terror prosecutors said they were leading the investigation into the attack at the Gambetta high school in the city of Arras, some 115 miles north of Paris. They said the suspect, who was arrested, was being investigated on charges including terror-related murder and attempted murder.

National police said the suspected assailant was a Russian national of Chechen origin. The French intelligence services said the suspect had been closely watched since the summer with tails and telephone surveillance and was stopped as recently as Thursday for a police check, which found no wrongdoing.

Sliman Hamzi, a police officer who was one of the first on the scene said the suspected attacker, a former student at the school, shouted, "Allahu Akbar" “God is great!” in Arabic.

Hamzi said he was alerted by another officer who was passing in front of the high school and called in. He “was shouting, ‘Someone is attacking with a knife!’” Hamzi said

Hamzi said he rushed to the school and saw the victim who died lying on the ground outside the school and the attacker being taken away.

“Colleagues arrived quickly but unfortunately couldn’t save the victim,” Hamzi said.

School attacks are rare in France. President Emmanuel Macron was heading to the scene along with the interior and education ministers, and the government asked authorities to heighten vigilance at all schools across the country.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said that the suspected attacker had been arrested.

Julie Duhamel, an official with the the Unsa teachers’ union in the Pas-de-Calais region, which includes Arras, told Franceinfo that teachers had noted the suspect’s radicalization “a few years ago.” Franceinfo, quoting a police source, said the the suspect’s brother was also arrested.

Parents said pupils were still confined to the locked-down school more than two hours after the attack.

Friday’s attack came three years after a teacher was beheaded outside a school in suburban Paris. Samuel Paty, a history and geography teacher, was slain Oct. 16, 2020 — also a Friday — by an 18-year-old of Chechen origin who had become radicalized.

Martin Doussau, a philosophy teacher at the Gambetta high school, said the attacker appeared to be hunting for a history teacher.

“I was chased by the attacker who ... asked me if I teach history. [He said:] ‘Are you a history teacher, are you a history teacher?’” said Doussau, who recounted how he barricaded himself behind a door until police used a stun gun to subdue the attacker.

“When he turned around and asked me if I am a history teacher, I immediately thought of Samuel Paty,” Doussau told reporters.

The attack came amid heightened tensions around the world over Hamas’ weekend attack on southern Israel and Israel’s military response, which have killed hundreds of civilians on both sides. There have been calls in Muslim nations for mass protests after Friday prayers over Israel’s intense bombing campaign in Gaza.

Darmanin on Thursday ordered local authorities to ban all pro-Palestinian demonstrations amid a rise in antisemitic acts since the Hamas attack.

France is estimated to have the world’s third-largest Jewish population, after Israel and the U.S., and the largest Muslim population in Western Europe.

A vice president of France’s lower house of Parliament, Naima Moutchou, said the National Assembly “expresses its solidarity and thoughts for the victims, their families and the educational community as we learn that a teacher has been killed and several others have been injured.″

Shani Louk, the 22-year-old German-Israeli woman whose naked body was paraded through Gaza after she was kidnapped by Hamas and feared to be dead, is alive, her family said Tuesday.

"We now have more information that Shani is alive," her mother, Ricarda, told the German news outlet NTV.

Shani was at a music festival when she was abducted by Hamas militants during their attack on Israel on Saturday.

Her mother, who claimed she received word of her daughter's condition from unnamed Palestinian sources, said Tuesday Shani has serious head injuries and is in a Gaza hospital, NTV reported.

Ricarda called on German officials for help.

"Every minute counts," she said.

Shani, a tattoo artist, is among more than 100 people Hamas has claimed to have taken hostage at the outbreak of the war in Israel on Saturday.

Israel Cannot defeat Hezbollah: Israeli expert

Israel cannot defeat Hezbollah in a direct engagement and the Lebanese guerrilla group would inflict heavy damage on the Israeli home front if war broke out, a former Israeli national security adviser said Thursday.

Though outnumbered and outgunned, Hezbollah held off Israel’s advanced armed forces in a 2006 war and fired more than 4,000 rockets into Israeli territory. The group has a domestic political base and has since bolstered an arsenal that Israel describes as a strategic threat.

Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah’s Iranian and Syrian backers have stoked expectations of renewed violence in Lebanon.

“Israel does not know how to beat Hezbollah,” said Giora Eiland, an army ex-general who served as national security adviser to former prime ministers Ariel Sharon and Ehud Olmert.

“Therefore a war waged only as Israel-versus-Hezbollah might yield better damage on Hezbollah, but Hezbollah would inflict far worse damage on the Israeli homefront than it did 4-1/2 years ago,” he told Israel Radio.

Echoing serving Israeli officials, Eiland said:

“Our only way of preventing the next war, and of winning if it happens anyway, is for it to be clear to everyone ... that another war between us and Hezbollah will be a war between Israel and the state of Lebanon and will wreak destruction on the state of Lebanon.

“And as no one -- including Hezbollah, the Syrians or the Iranians -- is interested in this, this is the best way of creating effective deterrence.”

Except for a deadly August skirmish between Israeli forces and the regular Lebanese army, the border has been mostly quiet.

But Israelis have been watching for signs that Hezbollah, should it be named in an impending U.N. indictment over the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri, will push back by consolidating power in Beirut.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has argued that Hezbollah’s role in governing Lebanon would make the country fair game in any future war involving the Shiite militia.

Eiland said such a scenario would have “the entire world crying out for a ceasefire within two days,” which would be more in the Israeli interest “than having to deal directly with every one of (Hezbollah’s estimated) 40,000 rockets.”
