Politics / Steps On How To Eradicate Poverty In Nigeria by hostlink: 11:47am On Jun 27, 2023
This article highlighted some of the steps on how to eradicate poverty in Nigeria. Poverty is the inability of people or families to get enough resources to satisfy a minimal level of life that is deemed acceptable by society. Lack of a typical or socially acceptable level of money or other goods is the condition of being in this situation. It is said to be when people lack the means to meet their basic needs. In Nigeria, the wealth of the nation is controlled by few individuals and leaving millions of Nigerians in poverty. 6 out of 10 Nigerians wake up every day without knowing where their next meal will come.

Poverty has reduced people’s quality of life to merely surviving daily, rather than living life to the fullest. It makes existence intolerable and has the power to end all life. For instance, the fact that poverty does not prevent parents from having children might make childrearing situations so miserable that the lives of children born under such circumstances are at risk. Because of this, infant mortality rates are particularly high in underdeveloped nations and localities across the world.

According to the World Bank’s Nigeria economic report, which was published in July 2019, Nigeria has one of the highest average economic growth rates in the world at 7.4%. The gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate fell to 2.7% in 2015 as a result of negative production shocks and the decline in oil prices from 2014 to 2016. 2016 the GDP shrank by 1.6% during its first recession in 25 years. Nationally, 89 million Nigerians (43 percent) live below the poverty line, while 53 million (25 percent) are considered vulnerable. Numerous people struggle with a lack of financial resources, severe information poverty, unemployment, information accessibility, technology assets, and other particularly debilitating circumstances like poverty.

The degree of poverty continues to be intolerable for a nation with enormous riches, a sizable population to sustain trade, a highly developed economy, and an abundance of natural resources like oil. Due to a lack of knowledge about the enormous informal sector of the economy, which is believed to be 60% larger than the present GDP numbers, poverty may have been overstated. As of 2018, poverty is slowly increasing as a result of population expansion outpacing economic growth. Nearly half of the population, and unemployment peaked at 23.1%, live below the international poverty line ($2 per day).

However, these initiatives have largely ignored the three causes of this enduring poverty—income disparity, interethnic conflict, and political instability with corruption. The economy has suffered greatly because of COVID-19, with food prices rising and markets being disrupted by rising costs and declining buying power.

6 STEPS TO END POVERTY IN NIGERIA

An Increase in Literacy Rates and Skill Development: According to UNICEF, Nigeria has one of the world’s worst rates of out-of-school children, with the situation looking to be considerably worse in Northern Nigeria. Data from October 2018 show that Nigeria has the greatest proportion of out-of-school children. Poverty is a constant effect of this lack of human capital development. An effective long-term solution to poverty in Nigeria can be found in high-quality education. Helpers Social Development Organization, a non-profit organization in Enugu State, has helped to increase literacy by opening a school that provides free education for children in the nursery and primary grades and by sponsoring their secondary education. This has been shown to increase economic efficiency by increasing the value and effectiveness of the workforce, helping people escape poverty.

Economic Diversification: Another significant factor contributing to Nigeria’s growing poverty levels is economic instability brought on by an overreliance on oil money. Therefore, it is essential to diversify economic activity to provide opportunities for Nigerians while preserving economic stability. Diversifying Nigeria’s economy and boosting value addition in the agricultural sector can both contribute to the elimination of poverty. 70% of the workforce is presently employed in agriculture, but by expanding it, the government will be able to offer even more specialized professions, enabling people to move up the employment ladder.
Embracing Technology and Economic Opportunity Expansion: Nigeria’s economic output and population prospects must be enhanced if poverty is to be eradicated there. For this to happen, it will be necessary to advance technological innovation while also increasing financial access and opportunities for women and young people in rural areas.
To do this, the Nigerian government must fund job-creation initiatives like rehabilitating infrastructure and other extensive investments that bolster local economies, generate jobs, and rejuvenate neighborhoods. Similar to how it has been demonstrated in other countries, the government may support increased employment creation by fostering entrepreneurial ecosystems and encouraging private-sector cooperation through incentives and social impact bonds.

Despite its limitations, access to microfinance has also been proven to reduce poverty globally. It is important to integrate individuals into the financial system so that governments can better organize and integrate services for the poorest of the poor, even while there are compelling reasons to use grants and other types of social assistance to support the poor.

Nigeria’s financial inclusion is rising, although there is still little financial inclusion in the nation’s rural, poor areas. Government regulatory support for digital and mobile-based financial products as well as the adoption of blockchain technology may both increase financial inclusion.

Healthcare Investment: People are being driven into extreme poverty every year because of having to pay for health issues, as Nigeria continues to deal with several damaging health indicators. To reduce poverty, we must invest in people’s health and well-being, especially the well-being of our young people. As a result, the Helper Social Development Foundation has built restrooms in public schools to enhance students’ well-being. It is crucial to remember that increased healthcare spending is linked to both a rise in the economy and a decrease in poverty.

Females’ Education and Women’s Empowerment: The approximate 10 million youngsters that are not in school in Nigeria are mostly female. It has been shown that empowering women and educating girls has a favorable impact on the economy and future generations. to eradicate poverty for both present and future generations Since 2016, the Helpers Social Development Foundation has sponsored girls’ education at the basic and secondary school levels and launched an initiative to combat child marriage and child sexual abuse in several rural areas. Gender equality raises household income and improves the prospects and well-being of children.

Fight Against Corruption: Because of Nigeria’s deeply ingrained corruption and the lack of sanctions for corrupt public officials, funds meant for development projects have been diverted, which has resulted in subpar infrastructure development, poor social welfare, and poverty.
Fighting corruption is an important step in helping the country end its growing poverty rates. To do this, a thorough anti-corruption campaign and strict financial control are needed. Fighting corruption has a direct influence on poverty reduction, as opposed to education, which decreases poverty gradually.

5. Income Redistribution: This simply implies that low- and middle-income employees will experience increases in their pay and benefits while high-income earners (particularly the political elite) would suffer decreases in their pay and benefits. Raising demand will boost overall production, creating more employment and reducing poverty.

6. Invest in Infrastructure: One way to assist the nation create a more connected economy, which can help to reduce poverty, is to invest in infrastructure. It will boost economic activity and give more Nigerians greater power to provide dependable power, a rail network, decent roads, pipe-borne water, and intervention in mass housing projects.

CONCLUSION

The humiliating contradiction of poverty amid abundance in Nigeria points to the urgent need for a focused effort to reduce and eventually eradicate poverty. A shared poverty reduction strategy that can be adopted by the federal government, state governments, local governments, NGOs, and the global donor community is therefore required.

In addition to a strong political commitment, projects, and programs aiming at eliminating poverty must also be depoliticized. Very importantly, it is necessary to implement programs and efforts to reduce poverty; as a result, consider donating to the Helpers Social Development Foundation or working with them to launch a project to eradicate Nigeria’s fundamental causes of poverty. To make a dent in poverty, we must have rapid, equitable economic growth, controlled population increase, competent economic management, and great governance.

The Helper’s Social Development Foundation is still one of the top nonprofit groups fighting poverty, which is a final but crucial point. National development plans must contain objectives for eliminating poverty, and the strategies and actions must be included in the country’s broader development/policy management framework.

Politics / Re: Will Giving Money To The Poor Solve The Problem Of Poverty In Nigeria by hostlink: 7:08am On Jun 27, 2023
Yes. poverty is a personal decision because every diligent and hardworking person will overcome poverty.
But it is important to give to the poor. Try to go to hospitals to see if the small money in your pocket can save lives.

Immatex:

You will always have the poor with you.

It's impossible for humans to eradicate poverty no matter how hard they try.

Poverty in Nigeria is largely blamed on social inequalities and the uneven distribution of resources.

Even so poverty is a personal decision because every diligent and hardworking person will overcome poverty.
Politics / Will Giving Money To The Poor Solve The Problem Of Poverty In Nigeria by hostlink: 8:27pm On Jun 26, 2023
One will ask “Will giving money to the poor help to solve the problem of poverty in Nigeria? Giving the poor money can bring great relief, it is important to note that poverty is a big deal with deep-rooted causes that needs serious tackling to terminate the reign of poverty and this can be achieved by offering or giving money to the poor through a notable non-governmental organization In Nigeria such as Helpers Social Development Foundation who established 100% free nursery and primary for underprivileged children in Oji-River LGA of Enugu State will help them to support children in needs. It is worthy to provide financial aid to those living in poverty in Nigeria, but giving money to poor Nigerians is not a sustainable solution to the issue of poverty. Giving money to sick people in hospitals can save lives.

Empowering talented Nigerians with the skills they needed is the best approach to building a sustainable future for all. Poverty is a state or condition in which one lacks the financial resources and essentials for a certain standard of living. Poverty is a great challenge in Nigeria, seriously affecting a significant number of its citizens. In the recent World Bank report, Poverty is calculated by the number of people living below $1.90 per day. It is an issue that has multiple areas to be addressed as to the cause. Poverty cannot be properly understood and the cause aired due to the fact that it can be linked to multiple natures of the problem.

According to Highlights of the United Nations publications on the 2022 Multidimensional Poverty[/https://www.undp.org/nigeria/publications/nigeria-multidimensional-poverty-index-2022 Index, there are about 63% of persons living in Nigeria (133 million people) are multidimensionally poor.

Causes of Poverty
It is of great importance also to look into the numerous causes of poverty and then work towards seeking or sourcing the possible solution to these causes that will eventually curb the problem of poverty in Nigeria. The world Bank report, there is a slow growth rate as well as low human capital which blocks the poverty reduction in Nigeria. Giving Money to Poor Nigerians will help them to escape poverty.

5 issues Affecting Nigeria’s Growth and How to Prevent by giving money

1. Poor Education and classroom funding:
In Nigeria, many citizens have limited access to quality education, which is one of the prominent factors contributing to poverty in this country. In the United Nations report, One out of every five out of school children is in Nigeria. In most rural parts of Nigeria, children are marginalized and these children lack access to schools and educational materials. This education factor creates a mighty gap and limits the opportunity of these out-of-school children from getting some required knowledge and insight into so many things about life. Poor classroom funding and lack of a conducive environment for learning in public schools contributed to children dropping out of school in Nigeria. This particular problem can be averted by giving equal opportunity to all children to get good skills and knowledge needed to help them break free from the circle of poverty.

2. Inadequate access to health services
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 aims to promote good health, especially in poor nations like Nigeria. Lack of healthcare equipment and services also plays a massive role in Nigeria’s poverty issue. A lot of Nigerians find it so hard to have access to good healthcare services, leading to many preventable sicknesses and possible deaths. Most of our government-owned hospitals and health centers lack the provision of good healthcare amenities, and supervision to monitor the activities of health workers. Workers in government-owned hospitals franchise poor Nigerians the opportunities to access free medical care because the majority of government own hospitals have taken the facilities as their private business. Some families in Nigeria who tried to go to private hospitals to get these good healthcare services can push them into poverty because most Nigerians are in the middle class and any small expenses move them downwards towards poverty. So initiating investments in the government healthcare sector and health education with proper supervision of staff can improve Nigeria as a country and also reduce the incidence of death in Nigeria,

3. High Unemployment and Underemployment rates among youth

Most youth do not earn enough income to compact daily expenses in the report published by the World Bank in 2020, About 4 of every 10 Nigerians are living under the poverty Line. These statistics also show that there are millions more who are capable of falling below the Poverty Line. Among those living below the $1.90 poverty line in 2018/19, 84.6 percent lived in rural areas and 76.3 percent lived in the North Central, North East, or North West zones. According to Highlights of the United Nations publications on the 2022 Multidimensional Poverty Index, there are about 63% of persons living in Nigeria (133 million people) are multidimensionally poor. Addressing poverty in Nigeria requires a lot of sustainable economic empowerment, diversification, and job creation. And also the entrepreneurs should be encouraged in many areas to support them and also to encourage younger minds to have admiration and work towards owning their own businesses.

4. Gender-based inequality:
Systemic inequalities, such as gender inequalities and regional differences, cooks poverty in Nigeria. In 2019, the World bank report states that the Vulnerable employment among women is 85.2% and among men is 74.9% in Nigeria for 2019. The Female gender, in particular, is faced with a great hindrance to accessing good education, employment, and decision-making roles. Most Nigerian homes still firmly believe that the place of a girl child is in the kitchen and as such should not be properly educated even if she struggles to get a basic education, she is pushed into marriage at an early stage and most of the time the individual dreams and aspirations will be cut short and so the cycle continues from the stone age till date. Eradicating gender inequalities and ensuring equal opportunities for all citizens can help break the circle of poverty and foster social cohabitation and inclusive development.

5. Lack of Basic social amenities
The Basic social amenities include lack of clean drinking water, low or no power supply, and means lack of good means of transportation among many other things that breed poverty in Nigeria. In the report tendered by the World Bank in 2021, about 60 million in the Nigerian population have no access to clean drinking water and about 80 million people live without improved sanitation facilities These amenities hinder economic activities and also hinder the delivery of essential services to the citizens of this country. If Nigeria can provide a viable condition for economic growth by providing the basic social amenities needed, this will improve its citizens’ economic and social life. Sincerely to understand and cut the ties of poverty in Nigeria, it is very very important to identify the connecting points of these factors. Poverty simply put is not simply a lack of money or wealth but a result of systemic issues that require comprehensive solutions.

Ways to Combat Poverty In Nigeria through Helpers Social Development Foundation:

Poverty as a problem can be solved in Nigeria by giving out money to implement a sustainable program with NGOs in Nigeria working with the underserved. Helpers Social Development Foundation as one of the top NGOs in Nigeria are closer to the grass root so they know what the people need more and how best to get to these people to get their problems solved. Poverty eradication can actually be made possible through having targeted intervention programs in job creation for Nigerian youth and women. Giving money to the poor through like Helpers Foundation will help to make education to be available to everyone. Building infrastructures like classroom building, skill acquisition centers, and building hospital facilities in underserved communities in Nigeria is one of the best ways you can collaborate with nonprofit organizations like Helpers Social Development Foundation to make Nigeria achieve her dream. Poverty in Nigeria can best be achieved through giving out money to the poor in collaborating with Helpers foundation. Every Nigerian child is smart but they never see the opportunity to achieve their potential.
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play a significant role in mitigating the issue of poverty in Nigeria. They operate independently of the government and work towards improving the lives of people living in poverty government cannot meet their needs.

Helpers Social Development Foundation is one of the top non-government organizations in Nigeria that established free schools for the poor in Nigeria. Helpers Foundation believed that education plays a critical to the growth of every child.

Politics / Poverty In Africa by hostlink: 12:27am On Jul 31, 2021
Why is Africa in poverty?
According to International Futures (IFs), sub-Saharan Africa accounts for roughly 60% of the global population living in poverty in 2020 and it is expected that Africa will represent approximately 87% of the global poor by 2030. Africa is the world’s last frontier in the fight against extreme poverty. Today, one in three Africans – 422 million people – live below the global poverty line of living on less than $1 per day. They represent more than 70% of the world’s poorest people.

The most significant challenges for reducing poverty in Africa are found in just two countries; namely Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Taken together, the 150 million citizens of these two countries represent more than one quarter of total poverty in Africa today. This is expected to represent almost half of Africa’s poor by the year 2030. Even though Nigeria is expected to lift nearly 10 million of its citizens up to the middle class over the next decade, the absolute number of poor people in Nigeria will still increase by about 20 million due to rapid population growth.

The COVID-19 pandemic could push nearly 50 million more Africans into extreme poverty according to the African Development Bank. Before the pandemic hit, the bank estimated that the number of people living in extreme poverty could reach 425.2 million this year. But it revised that number to between 453.4 million and 462.7 million — an increase of up to 37.5 million. Nigeria could see the largest increase in people entering extreme poverty.

Nigeria could see an increase of 8.5 million to 11.5 million this year. Similarly, COVID-19 could set back progress in building human capital, as school closures will affect nearly 253 million students, potentially causing a loss in learning.

Nigeria is the top oil exporter in Africa, which has helped to create wealth related to crude sales that account for more than half of government revenue. However, a failure to diversify the economy and build much-needed transport and power infrastructure has hindered growth and the spread of wealth beyond the rich elite. Rapid population growth outstrips economic growth, which stands at about 2 percent. The United Nations estimates that Nigeria will have a population of 400 million by 2050.

Roughly half of Nigeria’s population – live in extreme poverty, according to estimates from the World Data Lab’s Poverty Clock. Around June 2018, Nigeria overtook India, a country with seven times its population, at the bottom of the table. Put in another context, if poor Nigerians were a country it would be more populous than Germany. Almost six people in Nigeria fall into this trap every minute.

Sub-Saharan Africa is home to more than 1 billion people, half of whom will be under 25 years old by 2050. This is a time when strategies need to be developed on how this increasing younger generation will thrive in the future. Do we have the resources to feed these people? Do we have the resources to educate these people? An educated younger population will grow up to be an asset for different economies.

Why Helpers Foundation remains one of the top organizations helping the less privileged

We, at Helpers Social Development Foundation, are trying to create a better future for Nigerians in general. According to the World Economic Forum, three things Nigeria must do to end extreme poverty are:

[1] Invest in girls’ education

[2] Invest in health and well being

[3] Expand economic opportunity and embrace technology

At HSDF, we have projects covering all three areas mentioned above...

Education / Why Primary Education Should Be At The Top Of Your List When Giving To Charity by hostlink: 12:21am On Jul 31, 2021
Why primary education” should be at the top of your list when you want to donate to a charity. School brings back a lot of bittersweet memories for many of you. The routine would get cumbersome sometimes, or boring and uninteresting. Yet, you used to wake up, trudge along to school, have the time of your lives, and return after an eventful day.

Chatting excitedly with your mother about what magic you learned, your friends, sharing lunch, and that occasional scolding from your teachers; even though you didn’t realize it then, it was all fundamental in nurturing your mind and body. It played a vital role in determining who you’ve blossomed into today.

Can you imagine school not being a part of your lives? Quite a few times, you wish you could go back to those days right? You yearn to relive those cherished moments, reminiscing about childhood when you spent half of your time in school.

The sad reality is that there are still a lot of children who do not have the opportunity to attend school. Many neither have access to primary education nor the privilege to train for better lives. They are being disadvantaged from having a wonderful, memorable childhood.

Here are a few mind-numbing statistics that drive the point home:

About 258 million children and youth were out of school in 2018 — nearly one-fifth of the global population in that age group.
6 out of 10 children and adolescents are not achieving a minimum level of proficiency in reading and math
Some facts and figures also suggest geographical and gender disparity in attaining primary education:

More than half of children that have not enrolled in school live in sub-Saharan Africa, and more than 85 percent of children in sub-Saharan Africa are not learning the minimum.

Globally, around 5.5 million more girls than boys of primary school age were out of school in 2018.

Isn’t that shocking? Hard to digest? It is for us as well!

Let’s explain a few basics and work our way upwards.

What is Education?

According to the definition given in Merriam Webster dictionary, Education is:

a: the action or process of educating or of being educated

b: the knowledge and development resulting from the process of being educated.

This can be roughly translated into, education is something that is essential for the overall development of a person.

Why is it considered necessary to be educated?

*It lays the foundation for a person’s success and gives him a sense of reliability, helps him realize his true potential, and boosts his confidence.

*It paves the way for different opportunities and enables the child to explore and define a career.

*It influences the socioeconomic development of an individual positively. A person with a basic education will be able to employ his knowledge to increase respect and social status immensely.

The economic benefits come into place when he can use this as an instrument to establish his credibility and authority. In almost any work prospect, education is a benchmark in selecting a candidate.

*It helps to eliminate poverty from an individual’s life. Armed with the weapon of sound lessons, a person can use it to their benefit.

*Solid education is crucial to empowering a person to grow, stimulating curious minds, ensuring independence, improving cognition, cultivating erudite individuals, and refining various skills! It produces a well-rounded individual who possesses a sense of liberation and freedom to follow the desired path.

The best environments which encourage learning are schools.

Walls plastered from top to bottom with posters of the ABCs, numbers from 1 to 100, and the colours of the rainbow invite children to a classroom.

Sitting in a class with peers from the same age group is vital in nurturing a child’s zeal to learning, sharing, leadership building, and understanding the values of mutual respect.

Schools are the building blocks that contribute to a child’s mental, physical, and social development.

Why primary education” should be at the top of your list when you want to donate to a charity

The United Nations considers Quality Education as a fundamental right and categorized it as the 4th sustainable development goal. It states that:

“By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes.”

The major aim is to provide free, quality education to all children. Do not deny the right to primary education to children, irrespective of their sex, caste and creed.

What we strive for at ‘HSDF(Helpers Social Development Foundation)’

One of our keys focuses at HSDF is on providing Primary Education to underprivileged children in Nigeria. We do not want to deny this right to any child who is deprived of education just because he/she cannot afford one.

One of our projects is the Back To School initiative which is aimed at encouraging less privileged children to return to schools and receive primary education.

The major barrier that hinders children from learning in Nigeria is finance. Hence we have a constant requirement of finance to maintain a sound infrastructure and provide students with the necessary facilities for an enjoyable experience at school.

Another goal of ours is to bring little girls back to school and bridge the glaring gender gap that exists. We need to tackle quite a few skeletons in the closet and we are taking it one step at a time.

We would also love donations in kinds like books, shoes, school supplies and toys. Our mission is to provide the opportunity to learn to all those kids who would otherwise miss out on a chance to possess a powerful tool.

We have earnest volunteers for teaching the basics to students and it has shown phenomenal results but we are always in need of more.

Those passionate philanthropists travelling to Nigeria can also spend some time with our children and enjoy the first-hand experience as a volunteer tutor! We also want to develop a pragmatic approach towards our vision and have a lot of ideas brewing.

There is a lot of kindness in the world and we know that our goal of delivering primary education resonates well with your vibe.

Can’t wait to make a difference?
