Education / Re: Can Professors Take Undergraduate Classes? by howtong: 10:33am On Dec 02, 2017
It is only in Nigeria that professor is not synonymous to a lecturer.

In the US, a professor is the lecturer, others are assistant. Whether undergraduate or graduate.

It is because we have few professors in Nigeria that why a masters degree holder will be lecturing.
Business / 7 Practical Ways Of Making Money Online In Nigeria By 2018 by howtong: 3:51pm On Nov 28, 2017
If you have searched for long how to make money online in Nigeria, that is why we’ve put together this list. Just read through this article and you'll find the appropriate one that will work for you. You can add new ways to this list on this forum and feel free to share your own ideas.

1 — Build A Blog

One of the very popular ways to make money online is to blog. You will probably have heard of the likes of Linda Ikeji or Stella Dimoko. If you have not heard about them, there are probably one of the biggest bloggers in Nigeria.

You have to build your blog to the point where you have a lot of real readers or traffic on your blog. This could be difficult and takes a lot of work. However, once you reach a certain point the money will come.

How do you make money through blogging.

You can make money on your blog through advertisement, by putting Google Adsense or a local equivalent Twinpine Ads. The more traffic you get the more money you will make based on the number of people who see these ads.

2 — Upload Videos on Youtube

Apart from creating a blog, you can create video content and upload on youtube. You can create viral comedy or educational videos and make money from views.

With the YouTube Partner Program you can make profits from uploading your videos on youtube. You will receive a percentage of the advertising revenue collected per 1,000 views.

3 — Write And Sell An Ebook

If you are a good writer, you can consider writing an ebook. This is a great source of passive income, however, it requires a large amount of effort at the outset before you start making money.

Your ebook can be sold through Okadabooks or on international platforms such as Apple's iTunes Connect or Amazon's Kindle program.

4 — Create An App

Creating an app is far more technical. You really need to have the right app-development skills to be able to pull this off. If a lot of people get to download and use your app, you can make money from advertisement, subscription plan or in-app purchases.

5 — Sell Audiobooks With Audible

Recently, audiobooks have been growing in popularity more than digital-ebook. This is because people are finding its less stressful when learning technical subjects using audio or visual contents. However, start with an ebook first and then turn your ebook into an audiobook through a platform like Audible's ACX platform.

6 — Review websites & apps for cash

You can also make money by reviewing website or apps for cash. UserTesting.com is a platform that allows everyday people to review all kinds of websites and make money. A typical review takes around 20 minutes and bags you $10 (£6.50) via Paypal.

7 — Work as a remote freelancer

There are various platform that connects freelancer to people looking for their services e.g as a graphics designer, programmer, data analyst. Examples of such platform include Mechanical Turk, Fiverr, Upwork.

Working as a freelancer might have a difficult begineer as you will have to build profile as a tested and trusted professional. Therefore sourcing for work in one of these highly-competitive platforms will be difficult. Find the most successful people in your niche and try to model your approach and online profile after theirs.

There are many other creative ways to make money online in Nigeria. With any luck you'll be smiling to the bank!
Please feel free to share your own ideas.

Health / Everything You Need To Know About Monkeypox by howtong: 6:27pm On Oct 09, 2017
KEY FACTS
>>Recently, cases of human monkeypox has been recorded in Bayelsa State and parts of southern Nigeria
>>This the third time, monkeypox outbreak will be recorded in the nation’s history. There were a total of 3 recorded human cases previously in 1971 and 1978 according to the Centres for Disease Control, CDC.
>>Monkeypox is a rare disease that occurs primarily in remote parts of Central and West Africa, near tropical rainforests.
>>The monkeypox virus can cause a fatal illness in humans and, although it is similar to human smallpox which has been eradicated, it is much milder.
>>The monkeypox virus is transmitted to people from various wild animals but has limited secondary spread through human-to-human transmission.
>>There is no treatment or vaccine available although prior smallpox vaccination was highly effective in preventing monkeypox as well.

WHAT CAUSES MONKEYPOX
Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with monkeypox virus, that belongs to the same family of viruses that includes variola virus (the cause of smallpox), vaccinia virus (used in the smallpox vaccine), and cowpox virus. The natural reservoir remains unknown.

The Monkeypox virus can cause an illness with a generalised vesicular skin rash, fever, and painful jaw swelling. In previous outbreaks, it has led to death in about 1-10 per cent of infected cases. There is no specific medicine to treat the disease, but intensive supportive care helps patients to recover fully.

HOW TO PREVENT MONKEYPOX INFECTION
There are number of measures that can be taken to prevent infection with monkeypox virus:

>>Avoid contact with animals that could harbor the virus (including animals that are sick or that have been found dead in areas where monkeypox occurs).
>>Always wash hands with soap and water after contact with animals or when caring for sick relatives humans or soiled beddings.
>>Avoid contact with any materials, such as bedding, that has been in contact with a sick animal.
>>Isolate infected patients from others who could be at risk for infection.
>>Thoroughly cooking all animal products (blood, meat) before eating.
>>Use personal protective equipment (PPE) when caring for patients.
>>Preventing monkeypox expansion through restrictions on animal trade
>>Restricting or banning the movement of small African mammals and monkeys may be effective in slowing the expansion of the virus outside Africa.
>>Captive animals should not be inoculated against smallpox. Instead, potentially infected animals should be isolated from other animals and placed into immediate quarantine. Any animals that might have come into contact with an infected animal should be quarantined, handled with standard precautions and observed for monkeypox symptoms for 30 days.
>>Health care workers are strongly advised to practice universal precautions while handling patients and/or body fluids at all times.
>>They are also urged to be alert, be familiar with the symptoms and maintain a high index of suspicion. All suspected cases should be reported to the Local Government Area or State Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers.

As long as universal infection prevention and control practices are strictly adhered to by all clinical staff, the chances of transmission are minimal.

Webmasters / Adsense Palava: How Do You Get Adsense In Nigeria by howtong: 9:46am On Sep 18, 2017
I have been trying to put Adsense on our website: How-to.ng for a while now.

See Google Response:

Site does not comply with Google policies: We're unable to approve your AdSense application at this time because your site does not comply with the Google AdSense program policies or adhere to the Webmaster Quality guidelines. It's our goal to provide our advertisers sites that offer rich and meaningful content, receive organic traffic, and allow us to serve well-targeted ads to users. We believe that currently your site does not fulfill this criteria.

Here are some recommendations to help you improve the user experience on your site and comply with AdSense criteria:

It’s important for sites displaying Google ads to offer significant value to the user. As a publisher, you must provide unique and relevant content that gives users a reason to visit your site first.
Don’t place ads on auto-generated pages or pages with little to no original content.
Your site should also provide a good user experience through clear navigation and organization. Users should be able to easily click through your pages and find the information they’re seeking.

Any suggestions?

Nairaland / General / How To Become A Professional Whistle Blower by howtong: 7:41am On May 24, 2017
All you have to do is notify the authority about a person or organization regarded as engaging in corrupt practices. Whistle-blowers don’t visit police station or even EFCC office to make a report. They simply use an online whistle-blowing platform designed by the Federal Ministry of Finance (FMF). This platform allows submission of tips on fraudulent transactions, thereby making a tip submitter blow foul-play whistle against government officials, without the risk of being known.

If you also want to take advantage of the platform and blow against corruption in Nigeria, proceed as follow:
Step 1: Visit the Federal Government Whistle Blowing Platform here.

Step 2: Click on Submit Tip on the website.

Step 3: Fill the required field in the form

Step 4: choose the Type of organisation you want to blow your whistle against: for example a Ministry, a Department, or an Agency.

Step 5: Select the Organisation Name, from the drop-down menu. For example CBN

Step 6: Choose Type of Tip, click to select the category of the fraudulent activity you want to report. There is also an option you can use to specify, if the category isn’t on the provided menu list.

Step 7: Enter the Branch/Address of Organization, you can provide the specific address of the organisation involved.

Step 8: Enter the Date of Concerned Transaction, you will put the date of the transaction in which the fraud was committed.

Step 9: Enter a Description of Tip, you will give the full description of how the fraud was committed.
The above are the vital information that a whistle-blower needs to submit. All other parts of the form can be left out, if the whistle-blower worries about his identity.

The amount of money involved in the fraud and other supporting documents to backup the information provided can also be filled in, on the page.

After filling all the important parts of the form, click Submit to send your provided information to FMF server.
ALTERNATIVE WHISTLE BLOWING METHODS

There are alternative methods to explore if you dont want to fill a form:

Nairaland / General / How To Make Coconut Oil by howtong: 3:56pm On May 10, 2017
Recently, the acting president emphasized the importance of coconut oil while comparing the price to that crude oil. Apart from the lucrativeness, coconut oil is useful in cooking, skin care, weight loss. In this post you will learn how to make coconut oil from home.

You will need:
A blender for blending the coconuts.
Chopping board for cutting the coconut flesh/meat.
A blunt object for breaking the coconut: a hammer or small axe will do.
Original stainless steel pot for cooking the coconut till the oil seeps out. Do not use non-stick or coated pots for this because during cooking, the coconut oil will get to high temperatures.
Bowls.
Sieves.
Hot water mixed to a comfortable temperature. Keep it as hot as you can comfortably handle with your bare hands. Extracting coconut milk with moderately hot water gives you more coconut oil than when you extract with warm or lukewarm water. Don’t even use cool water.

Source: https://how-to.ng/2017/05/make-coconut-oil/
DIRECTIONS FOR MAKING COCONUT OIL
1. Break the coconuts with a heavy blunt object.

2. When done, pry out the coconut meat from the coconut shell with a knife. Once the coconut is mature, the coconut meat should come out of the shell easily.

3. Rinse the pieces of coconut thoroughly and cut them into small pieces to help your blender.

4. For best results, we need to blend the coconuts with warm water. So boil some water and mix with cool water to get warm water.

5. Grind the pieces of coconut with the diluted hot water till smooth. Depending on the quantity you are making, you may need to grind in batches.

6. Pour in a sieve to separate the coconut milk from the chaff. Then press with your hands to squeeze out the last drop.

7. Grind the chaff a second time to get more coconut milk.

8. Use a sieve with a finer mesh to remove the tiniest particles from the coconut milk.

9. When done, cover the bowl of coconut milk and keep it in the fridge overnight.

10. The next morning, you will see that the coconut oil has separated from the water and caked beautifully on top like a frozen lake

11. Take the caked white coconut oil and place in a clean dry stainless steel pot. The water remaining in the bowl still has some coconut taste and can be used to boil White Rice, prepare Jollof Coconut Rice, White Coconut Rice and any other recipe that calls for coconut milk.

12. Cover the pot and start cooking on low to medium heat. If you notice any smoke at any time as you cook, reduce the heat to very low.

13. Keep an eye on the pot and stir from time to time. Cook till you notice some charred coconut bits in the oil.At least 15 minutes.

14. Set the pot aside so the coconut oil can cool down to a comfortable temperature.

15. Sieve with a chiffon cloth or a cheese cloth to remove the charred bits. If you still notice any charred bits in the sieved coconut oil, sieve again with a paper towel. Store in your cupboard and use when you wish.
