FROM THE ARCHIVES: OJUKWU'S LETTER TO VICTOR BANJO ON THE INVASION OF THE MIDWEST "TAKING OUR DESTINIES INTO OUR HANDS" - 22 August 1967 From: The Military Governor, Republic of Biafra, Enugu. My Dear Victor, 1. For some time now, you and I have been discussing the circumstances that have led to the current and inevitable disintegration of what was the Federation of Nigeria. We have been fully convinced that the aim of the Hausa/Fulani complex has ever been, and will ever remain, the total domination of every other part of what was known as the Federation of Nigeria. It is impossible to forget that the crisis which led to the army take over in January 1966, the coup of the Northern soldiers led by Gowon in July 1966, the wholesale and indiscriminate massacre of the people of what is now Biafra- and, to a less degree, the people of the Mid-West and West, including the Yorubas, were all the direct result of Hausa/Fulani attempt to subjugate and use as tools, the gallant people of Western Nigeria namely the Yorubas. We do not need to remind ourselves of the heavy losses in life and property suffered by the Yoruba people in their fight for justice and freedom during 1965. 2. Sharing our belief that the people of Yorubaland have a right to live a life of equality and self-respect and justice free of domination and dictatorship from any quarter, you have both identified with the cause of the Biafra struggle for survival and expressed your determination to see the people of Yorubaland freed from Hausa/Fulani domination. We, the people of Biafra, for our part are willing and have decided to give you and the people of Yorubaland every assistance to achieve your aim. 3. After clearing the whole question with my Executive Council, I, as the Commander in Chief of the Biafran Armed Forces, have decided to place at your disposal Biafran forces, for the liberation of Yorubaland on the following clear conditions:- (i) You will have nothing to do with the Military Administrator in the Mid-West Territory during your sojourn there prior to your move to the West. (ii) The willingness and preparedness of Biafra to assist any part of the former Federation of Nigeria wishing and willing to liberate itself from the Hausa/Fulani domination, does not in anyway whatever imply any inclination on her part to compromise her sovereignty or preserve what remains of the defunct Federation of Nigeria. In other words, our sovereignty and break with Nigeria is irrevocable. Nothing must, therefore be said or done by you or any member of the Liberation Army to give a contrary impression. (iii) Biafra is determined to maintain and safeguard her sovereignty and ensure that her integrity and safety are never again threatened. In a show of humility and compassion rarely found among Nigerian politicians, Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano stopped his convoy today to commiserate with some victims of an auto crash along the Awka Etiti - Iseke express way. The accident which involved a Mercedes Benz 230 salon car and a Toyota Corolla hatchback with a learner's sign was however miraculous as no one was hurt in spite of the terrible shape of the vehicles after the collision. In a move reminiscent of his recent rescue of an accident victim in Onitsha, Governor Obiano ordered his convoy to pull over and quickly moved to the crash scene to lend a hand. On discovering that no one was hurt, the Governor heaved a sigh of relief and ordered his men to take them to a nearby hospital for basic checks after saying some soothing words to them. NIGERIA WORLD'S LARGEST YAM PRODUCER - EXPERT Ibadan, Dec. 28, 2014. A Geneticist at the University of Ibadan, Dr Morufat Balogun, on Sunday said Nigeria produced 70 per cent of the yam grown annually and globally. Balogun, who is also a researcher at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan. She said while Nigeria grew 70 per cent of yam annually, other countries shared the remaining 30 per cent. She said that between 37 and 40 million of metric tons of yam were produced in the world annually. "Nigeria alone produces 70 per cent of yam every year all over the world, the remaining 30 per cent is shared among Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Togo and Benin Republic," Balogun said. She said in some areas in Southern America, some varieties of the commodity were also produced adding that the production of yam both for import and export largely depended on Nigeria. "If Nigeria stops to produce yam today, the global production of yam will reduce by 70 per cent and it will affect exportation," she said. The expert said that production of yam if properly harnessed, could turn around the standard of living of millions of farmers and other investors interested in the business. She advised farmers to plant more yam so as to improve the economy, saying that the crop could liberate Africa from excessive rice consumption. GOVERNOR OBIANO APPOINTS STELLA ODUAH AS HEAD OF ANAMBRA AIRPORT PROJECT In keeping with his avowed commitment to achieve increased investment inflow to the state, Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, said the state has attracted about $1.65 billion investment from investors since March 17, 2014 when the new administration was inaugurated. These investments, he said, were attracted to key areas covering agriculture, hospitality and tourism industry, power generation, trade and commerce, among others. Obiano, who addressed journalists on the various programmes and achievements as well as challenges facing his government, also disclosed that he had appointed former Aviation Minister, Princess Stella Oduah, as head of Anambra State Airport Development Agency based on her wealth of experience and track record of turning around the country’s aviation industry, noting that his administration had distributed high-yielding seedlings to farmers and encouraged the formation of cooperative societies for easy access to farm inputs and credits. The All progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has extended the tenure of the national chairman of the party, Chief Victor Umeh, for a period of 120 days, according to sources. This followed a successful amendment of the party's constitution by the delegates at a special convention of the party held on December 17 at the Women's Development Centre, Awka. Meanwhile, the wife of the late leader of the party, Mrs Bianca Ojukwu had opposed the extension of Umeh's tenure arguing that it was wrong. In her argument Mrs Ojukwu stated that Umeh would by this act have been a judge in his own case by presiding and ensuring that his tenure which should be winding up was extended. Though she was overruled by a majority of the members, she said her objection was to at least show her disenchantment with the development. http://ndibenonso..com/2014/12/apga-extends-umehs-tenure-bianca.html (Click link for full news) |

It is just a couple of days to yet another Christmas, festivities all around us, people running helter skelter to get goodies with which to celebrate the yuletide season. But have you ever pondered on how the nativity of Jesus Christ or "Christmas" as we know it today came to be? Did you know that it was until the 9th century A.D (almost 900 years after Christ was born) that Christmas became a major festival/feast? So why did it take that long to be recognized worldwide as the birthday of our Lord and Savior? http://ndibenonso..com/2014/12/why-do-we-celebrate-christmas-on.html (Click link for rest of article)

(Reuters) - Brent crude jumped 3 percent to above $63 a barrel on Thursday, extending a rebound from five-year lows this week as oil's six-month price rout forced more energy firms to cut investments in new production. Oil this week slumped as low as $58.50 and has almost halved since June as fast-growing U.S. shale output overwhelms demand, with losses accelerating after producer group OPEC decided not to cut output at its meeting last month. But signs that lower prices are threatening future production have given some traders pause. Oil prices were volatile on Wednesday, briefly spiking as much as 6 percent as players rushed to close short positions, before falling back. At 1109 GMT on Thursday, Brent for February delivery LCOc1 was $2.09 higher at $63.27, after settling up $1.17 in the prior session. U.S. crude CLc1 for January delivery, which expires after Friday's settlement, was up $1.83 at $58.30 a barrel. "It looks like investors favour support around $60 a barrel," said Daniel Ang, an investment analyst at Phillip Futures in Singapore, adding that lower investment in production could be felt in the market as early as the second quarter of 2015. Chevron Corp (CVX.N) has put a plan to drill for oil in the Beaufort Sea in Canada's Arctic on indefinite hold, while Marathon Oil (MRO.N) cut its capital expenditure for next year by about 20 percent.Canadian oil producers also deepened cuts in 2015 spending, as Husky Energy (HSE.TO), MEG Energy (MEG.TO) and Penn West Petroleum (PWT.TO) joined those hacking back capital budgets. The oil minister of top OPEC producer Saudi Arabia said on Thursday he believes the drop in prices will be short-lived as demand for crude picks up. "I am optimistic about the future, what we are facing now and what the world is facing is a temporary situation and will pass," Ali al-Naimi was quoted by state news agency SPA as saying. OPEC members that backed an output cut last month are coming around to the Saudi view that they need to focus on market share. "We are just watching and selling oil at whatever the price is," said a delegate from an OPEC country that had wanted an output cut in November. Saudi Arabia, which opposed cutting output, raised exports in October to 6.9 million barrels per day from 6.7 million bpd in September, data showed. http://ndibenonso..com/2014/12/breaking-oil-price-recovers-jumps-from.html |

The trio of Anambra State Government, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company (IVM) and the Federal Polytechnic Oko on monday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in which the students and teachers of the technical colleges around the state will begin learning the intricacies of designing automobile bodies and other elements of automobile engineering. In the partnership which will last for 10 years, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company will offer its auto production line for the benefit of the study, while their crop of auto engineers, designers and technicians will devote time in teaching and mentoring the engineering students. Also under the partnership, lecturers from the Federal Polytechnic, Oko will support the Innoson group with their own expertise and theoretical applications. The presence of these lecturers will heighten the academic and conceptual content of the programme and ensure a balanced and wholesome experience. Governor Willie Obiano revealed this in the IVM plant while signing the MOU. He also said that in the first phase of the Bridge Project, 493 students drawn from the 11 technical colleges in Anambra state will participate in the pilot programme. If successful then Anambra may well be on its way to become the first in the country to own a completely indigenous automobile manufacturing and assembly plant. "Our objective here today is to expand the vision of one man so that it becomes the vision of a people. We have resolved to avoid the mistakes of the past when we lacked the foresight to harness the gifts and talents of today for the progress and prosperity of tomorrow. Ladies and gentlemen, the partnership we are cementing today is an important step in exploiting INDUSTRIALIZATION, which is one of the Four Pillars of my administration’s economic blueprint. The other three are Agriculture, Trade & Commerce and Oil & Gas" the Governor stated. You will recall that the world bank under the State Education Programme Investment Project (SEPIP) committed the sum of $2.1m. In another developement, the state government has signed a $150m agreement with UDIPPCO for the construction of an 80 megawatts of electricity to feed the growing industrial city of Nnewi. http://ndibenonso..com/2014/12/anambra-introduces-automobile.html (Click link for full details, pictures)

OIL PRICE SLUMPS TO $59 - FIRST TIME SINCE 2009 (Reuters) - Oil fell to just above $59 a barrel for the first time since May 2009 on Tuesday, extending a six-month selloff as slowing Chinese factory activity and weakening emerging-market currencies added to concerns about demand. International benchmark Brent crude has almost halved since reaching a 2014 high of $115 a barrel in June on ample supply and slowing demand, and a switch in strategy by exporter group OPEC to defending market share rather than prices. A report showing Chinese industrial activity shrank for the first time in seven months in December added to concern about oil demand. China is the second-largest oil consumer after the United States. Brent crude LCOc1 fell as low as $59.02, its weakest level since May 2009, and as of 0914 GMT (04:14 a.m. EST) was down $1.81 at $59.25. U.S. crude CLc1 was down $1.60 at $54.31 a barrel. "The trend remains down," said Robin Bieber, technical analyst and director at London-based oil broker PVM Oil Associates. "It is not advised to be long." Weakening emerging-market currencies and economies - the drivers of growth in global oil demand - also weighed on prices, analysts said. In Russia, one of the world's largest oil producers, the central bank hiked its key interest rate by 6.5 percentage points to 17 percent on Tuesday in an attempt to halt a collapse in the rouble. In India, the Reserve Bank has been intervening in support of the struggling rupee in recent sessions, triggered by a worsening trade deficit, and in Indonesia the rupiah dropped to its lowest in 16 years against the U.S. dollar. "The sharp decline in nearly all commodity prices and the weakening in commodity currencies creates headwinds for oil demand in the commodity-producing emerging markets in Latin America and the Middle East," Goldman Sachs said in a report. http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/12/16/us-markets-oil-idUSKBN0JU0BO20141216 or http://ndibenonso..com/2014/12/oil-price-slumps-to-59-first-time-since.html |
(Most of the dead between ages 12-16) Huffington Post reports that at least 126 people were killed Tuesday when Taliban gunmen attacked a military-run school in Peshawar, Pakistan. More than 100 of the dead were children, officials said. As distraught parents watched, more students were still being held hostage inside the school for grades 1 through 10 in the northwest part of the country, provincial minister Inayatullah Khan told local television. "My son was in uniform in the morning. He is in a casket now," wailed one parent, Tahir Ali, as he came to the hospital to collect the body of his 14-year-old son Abdullah. "My son was my dream. My dream has been killed." Most of the dead were between 12 to 16 years old, said the chief minister of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pervez Khattak. "We were in the examination hall when all of sudden firing started and our teachers told us to silently lay on the floor," one student inside the school at the time of the attack told a private television channel. "We remained on the floor for an hour. There was a lot of gunfire. When the gunfire died down our soldiers came and guided us out." http://ndibenonso..com/2014/12/pakistani-school-massacre-islamist.html (click link for full details)
