HOW TOMPOLO'S $3M SWUNG DELTA PDP GOVERNORSHIP TICKET TO OKOWA More facts have emerged on the surprise that the governorship primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party in Delta State turned out to be. The primaries, which took place on December 8, 2014 was won by Senator Ifeanyi Okowa. However, a few days and hours before the primaries, the name of Okowa did not feature highly on the list of aspirants favoured to clinch the ticket. Until about 48 hours before the primaries, the thinking in the PDP was to run with the perceived compromise candidate of the party and former Permanent Secretary in the Delta State Government House, Tony Obuh. Obuh is from Delta North Senatorial District, which has never produced the governor of the state and was largely regarded to have the backing of the state Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan and the Presidency. A day before the primaries, the name of a former Commissioner for Finance in the administration of former Governor James Ibori, David Edevbie, came up. Edevbie was believed to have become the candidate of the Presidency after Ibori indicated interest in supporting him. http://ndibenonso..com/2014/12/how-tompolos-3m-swung-delta-pdp.html (Click link for the full story)

The South West governors belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday met in a closed door meeting in Lagos to decide on the choice of a suitable running mate to the party's presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd). The deliberations however took a wrong turn as the name of former Governor of Lagos state, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and current Governor Fashola cropped up on the list bringing up yet again the much debated issue of Muslim-Muslim ticket. http://ndibenonso..com/2014/12/buharis-running-mate-tinubu-fashola-top.html (click link for full details) |
In his recently released Autobiography, General Olusegun Obasanjo (Rtd) opened a can of worms on several Nigerian leaders. Not left out is his kinsman from Ogun state, Professor Wole Soyinka. An 11-year-old girl stole thousands of dollars from her grandma and then told a cab driver to take her halfway across the country so she could meet a 16-year-old boy she'd been chatting with online. Alexis Waller is safe and sound and will not face any charges after her pre-teen hijinks, according to KARK. Authorities said Waller stole $10,000 from her grandmother's sock drawer in Bryant, Arkansas. Then she hitched a ride with a stranger to Little Rock where she called a cab. Waller told the cab driver to take her to Jacksonville, Florida. "I said I need to go to Jacksonville, Florida," Waller told KARK. "He's like, 'do you have money' and I'm like, 'yes.'" http://ndibenonso..com/2014/12/11-year-old-girl-steals-10000-to-meet.html (Click link for the rest of the news)

Finding ourselves at the jolliest time of the year -- the season where all the talk is about Oscar nominations and best performance, it really is devilishly delightful to remember that not all movies were created equal. Some may have had millions of dollars at their disposal and even starred Hollywood's biggest names, but that doesn't mean they were worth the price of admission or the time away from family, friends or vacuuming your room. Below, find the 10 worst-reviewed movies of 2014 -- and remember, we still have 19 days left in the year! (All movies were reviewed and rated by Rotten Tomatoes) 10. "BLENDED" Total box office: $46.3 million Rotten Tomatoes score: 14% Sample review: "Another year has passed, and so, as with the cold inevitability of death, another Adam Sandler movie is upon us." -- Philip Brown, Globe and Mail 9. bukatyne:I never said men and women were not equals, what i'm implying is that we are different and so have different roles to play in all aspects of life including marriage. |

I guess it's because ladies want to settle down with a man that can love and take care of them, especially as their Biological clocks tick fast. |
"We can't destroy the inequities between men and women until we destroy marriage" - Ms Robin Morgan "My current position on marriage is that I am against it. ... Politically, I am against it because it has been oppressive for women, and through privileging heterosexuality, oppressive for lesbians and gay men" - Virginia Braun The above statements were made by two foremost feminists. Feminism in the right sense of it had always been about fighting for equality of rights for women. From the early days of the first wave feminist movements which focused mainly on suffrage and legal obstacles of equality in voting and property rights, to the second wave feminism of the 70s and 80s which sought for rights in the workplace, family and sexuality for women, the campaigns have always been for the men folk to stop the age long oppression of women in all aspects of life. The main focus of my write-up however is on how feminism may be affecting marriages all over the world. The effect may be more in the developed countries but it is slowly and surely creeping into Africa and Nigeria. Robin Morgan who I quoted in the first paragraph is known as the mother of modern feminism. Though she was initially married with a son, she later divorced her husband, and declared for atheism saying that religion is patriarchal and thus demeaning to women. Another radical feminist, Linda Gordon was quoted as saying that the nuclear family must be destroyed and that the break-up of families is an objectively revolutionary process. Perhaps the most radical feminist statement yet came from Valerie Solanas in her writing, the S.C.U.M manifesto where she wrote that "to call a man an animal is to flatter him; he is a machine, a walking Love machine" She went ahead to call to women to overthrow all forms of male leadership as a way of making the world a better place. One common factor with these people apart from misandry is their real or imagined disdain for the institution of marriage and (for some) the encouragement of or active participation in Lesbianism and Gayism. To them, marriage is sexist and demeans women. Jane Lewis wrote, " Symbolically, the white wedding asserts that women’s ultimate dream and purpose is to marry, and remains replete with sexist imagery: the father “giving away” the bride; the white dress symbolizing the bride’s virginity (and emphasizing the importance of her appearance); the vows to obey the husband; the minister telling the husband “you may now kiss the bride” (rather than the bride herself giving permission, or indeed initiating or at least equally participating in the act of kissing); the reception at which, traditionally, all the speeches are given by men; the wife surrendering her own name and taking her husband’s.'' The list goes on and on. But if i may ask, will the end of marriage as an institution as canvassed by some feminists actually translate to the end of women's travails and alleged oppression? Will the change in the natural roles of men at home as opposed to that of women mean an end to marital problems? If marriage is such a terrible anti-female experience, why then are feminists especially in developed climes campaigning for lesbian and gay marriages? Since marriage is bad, then the same sexes should stay off, shouldn't they? Does equal rights for both men and women translate to equality of both sexes? If both sexes are equal why then do we have different sports tournaments for men and women? Why did God create us differently if he didn't intend for us to assume different roles in life (Genesis 1:27)? I have heard some of them even seen on their facebook walls and other social media question why a woman must be submissive to the husband in marriage as directed by the scriptures. They suggest to their female friends ways to rebel against their husbands and "keep them in their right places". They are marriage counselors who themselves are not married. Before some people misunderstand me, i am not in any way supporting domestic violence or maltreatment in marriage as I believe in mutual respect between both sexes. But i am pro-marriage and i am a sincere believer that marriage MUST be a union between MAN and WOMAN, and not between man and man or woman and woman. Indeed the joy of companionship, the strength the couple find in the love between them, the way the two become whole in personality and emotionally, the pleasures and satisfaction of sex, the reward of having and raising children e.t.c can only come through the life-long permanency of marriage. The increasing rate of juvenile delinquency we have these days is a direct result of breakdown of the marriage institution especially in the developed world, where single parenting, baby mamaism, broken homes e.t.c is the order of the day. In conclusion, while discussing this marriage issue with a female friend who prides herself as a feminist, she called those "other feminists" old fashioned and said the modern feminist like herself actually do not dislike marriage on principle. She said she disagrees with this general notion that a woman isn't complete till she is married off and that society frowns at single accomplished ladies like herself. My take on that is, marriage is not something to be rushed into just because you need to be called a Mrs. or because the biological clock is ticking away. It is a life contract and so care should be taken to get someone you are at least compatible with and can grow old with. Truly there is no perfect marriage, but like they say tough times don't last, but tough people do. http://ndibenonso..com/2014/12/radical-feminism-versus-marriage.html |
Did you know that with an estimated reserve of 250 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), the Nigerian natural gas reserve is more than triple the amount of its crude oil counterpart? That is not even the interesting part. Listen to this. Due to gross inefficiency and inability to effectively harness its gas resources (i.e via flaring off most of the gas end products from oil fields) Nigeria loses an estimated $18.2million(USD) daily. That is about $6.64billion (N1.12trillion) annually flushed down the drain; and by the way Nigeria has been reported in international circles to be the largest gas flaring country in the world! With the unstable oil prices and the demand for cleaner forms of energy with less emissions, the world demand for natural gas (sold in liquefied form as liquefied Natural Gas or LNG) is on an exponential increase. In the United States, natural gas consumption in 2004 was 22.1 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), and the EIA has projected the demand to reach 30.7 Trillion cubic feet by 2025. Japan which is the world's largest importer of LNG imports about 3 trillion cubic feet annually. That is more than the quantity Nigeria exports! THE WORST STATES FOR BLACK AMERICANS In the wake of the recent police brutalities against blacks in parts of the United States and the refusal of grand juries Ferguson, Missouri and in New York city to indict white policemen who killed unarmed black men, it is worthy to note the states in America that offer the worst opportunities for minorities especially African Americans. Read on. 10. Arkansas: Arkansas is among the worst states for black Americans. Nearly 16% of Arkansas’ population identifies as black. Yet, the state does not have a single black representative in Congress. In addition to limited representation, black Arkansas residents are disproportionately likely to be unemployed. Last year, the state’s unemployment rate for black workers was 16.5%, versus a 7.8% unemployment rate of the state’s labor force. In general, upward income mobility is more limited for Americans living in the South, according to research from the Equality of Opportunity Project. In Arkansas’ largest urban area, Little Rock, the odds of reaching the top income quintile for a person born in the bottom quintile was just 5.4%, well-below the U.S. rate overall. Economic mobility may be even more difficult for black Americans, who, on average, earn less than 60% the median household income of white Americans. 9. Kansas: A typical black household in Kansas made 60.2% of the median white household income in 2013, slightly wider than the national income gap. Lower incomes among the state’s black population are due in part to the relatively large gaps in educational attainment and incarceration rates compared to white residents, among other measures. Nearly 32% of white state residents had attained at least a bachelor’s degree in 2013, while 18.3% of black residents had done so, a difference of nearly 14 percentage points, larger than the national gap of 11.6 percentage points. While black Americans were 5.12 times more likely to go to prison than their white peers across the U.S., in Kansas, black residents were nearly eight times more likely to go to prison, one of the higher disparities nationwide. As in several other states on this list, Kansas residents are also not represented at all by black congressmen in the U.S. Congress. 8. New Jersey: Nearly 16% of New Jersey’s black population lived in poverty in 2013. This figure is lower than the national poverty rate of 17.1% and partially reflects the fact that the state is among the wealthiest in the country. Yet, the typical black household made only 58% of the typical white household, a wider income gap than across the county. Only one in five black residents had at least a bachelor’s degree in 2013, much lower than the nearly 40% of white adults who had held at least such a degree. As Wilson explained, without economic opportunity people often turn to alternatives that may be illegal. Blacks were more than nine times as likely to be imprisoned in 2013, nearly twice the national... http://ndibenonso..com/2014/12/the-worst-states-for-black-americans.html (Click link for the rest)

A PASSAGE TAKEN FROM OBASANJO'S LATEST BOOK While you wait to buy General Olusegun Obasanjo (rtd)'s latest book, an autobiography titled "my watch", it may interest you to go through an excerpt taken from the controversial book. Enjoy your reading. "By the Constitution, I had to inaugurate the National Assembly on June 4, 1999. The most important officer in the National Assembly is the senate president and that office had been zoned to the South-east. And here was where Atiku Abubakar, my vice-president,first showed his hand and his character. “Without seeking my view or approval, he started planning the installation of Chuba Okadigbo as the senate president. I did a background check on Chuba including his past as a student and made enquiries about him in the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) under (President Shehu) Shagari and no one would recommend him for the post of senate president. “I left Atiku to go on his chase while I carried out a meticulous and detailed investigation and background check on each senator from the South-east. The one that appeared most appointable was Evan Enwerem. I canvassed the senate across the board for his election and he was elected. Atiku did not expect it and he felt sore. “He began to strategise for Enwerem to be removed and Chuba Okadigbo to be installed. His strategy worked because I was at Abuja airport to receive a visiting head of state when the news reached me that the Senate had impeached Enwerem and elected Okadigbo. I was not perturbed. I came to understand from some senators including Florence Ita-Giwa, who later became my Special Adviser/ Liaison Officer to the National Assembly, that Atiku distributed US$5,000 each to some senators to carry out the ‘coup’. “That was the beginning of bribing the legislature to carry out a particular line of action to suit or satisfy the purpose or desire of an individual or a group. The National Assembly had tasted blood and they would continue to want more. From the day I nominated Atiku to be my vice, he set his mind not for any good, benefit or service of the country, but on furiously planning to upstage, supplant or remove me at all cost and to take my place. “That was what I brought him for, but he was impatient and over-ambitious.He was not ready to learn and to wait. His marabout, who predicted that despite being elected as governor, he would not be sworn in as a governor, which happened, also assured him that he would take over from me in a matter of months rather than years. “All his plans, appointments of people and his actions were towards the actualisation of his marabout’s prediction. Once I realised his intention and programme, I watched him like a hawk without giving any indication of what I knew and letting down my guard. I could not succumb to the distraction, diversion and malevolence of an ambitious but unwise deputy...
