Junaid Mohammed, Igbophobia And The Civil War Hangover Oftentimes, I sit and ponder why there seems to be an eternal mistrust amongst Nigeria's 3 major tribes, the Hausa (representing the North), the Yoruba (representing the west) and the Igbo (representing the east). But more intriguing is the apparent gang up of two components of this tripod (on which Nigeria stands) in always making the third member feel that he is not wanted in the arrangement, an alienation of sorts. The mutual suspicion between the North and the East predates Nigeria's independence. In a televised interview in 1958, the Northern Premier, Sir Ahmadu Bello while speaking to a British Journalist described "Ibos" as being too domineering and power hungry. He gave an example thus, "when you place an Ibo in a laboring camp with other tribes, he will always find a way of emerging the leader of that camp and imposing himself on others..." After the bitter Nigeria/Biafran civil war that pitched the East against all other parts of the country in a bloody conflict that cost millions of lives, mainly that of women and children, the distrust became even more pronounced with most other Nigerians viewing the Igbos as potential secessionists. Forty five years later, nothing much seems to have changed and the cold war between ndigbo and the rest of the country continues. To some of these power brokers especially in the North, "Ibos" should go on paying for ever attempting to leave the union. They must continue being punished by political, infrastructural, socio-economic and other forms of exclusion. Just last week, the convener of the Coalition of Northern Politicians, Academics, Professionals and Businessmen, Dr Junaid Mohammed, a medical doctor, drew the first blood when he fired, "...I don't care what Ezeife says - if they (Igbo) had seceded, there would have been no Nigerian today. "As people who acted outside the interest of Nigeria as a country, to expect compensation is a very odd logic. "If they do, they must be prepared to live with the consequences - nobody owes them anything and nobody is out to compensate them for anything..." Junaid Mohammed made the above statements in reaction to former Anambra Governor, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife's complaint that ndigbo had not been treated fairly in terms of political positions and appointments in the President Muhammadu Buhari's administration. Dr Mohammed talked about "odd logic" in his statement. However what is even more odd and defies all rational logic is the fact that the Doctor could equate Ezeife's clarion call for equality of representation to an act of secession or war. I see no commonsense in bringing the civil war into an issue bordering mainly on infringement of the federal character statute, a constitutional matter. Pray tell me what is logical in Dr Mohammed's justification of punishing a generation of Igbos many of who were born decades after the war ended, for the "alleged sins" of their fathers and grandfathers who in his opinion, dared to declare a sovereign nation of Biafra? Perhaps the gentleman needs some crash course on the events that took place before, during and after the almost 3 year conflict. Does it not also amount to standing logic on its head for Mohammed to justify Buhari's action of near exclusion of Igbos in his appointments, with an event that ended almost half a century ago? He talks about compensation as if "dem wan dash us human rights, animal wan dash me human rights..." (apologies to the great Abami Eda). What manner of compensation is he referring to? Is he saying that appointing Igbos into the Buhari government is an act of compensation while appointing northerners isn't? Are we now second class citizens that we cannot rightly demand for what is ours? Is it not obvious that Junaid Mohammed's view is one that is widely held by many of his likes in the North who still perceive ndigbo as a conquered people who must be ready to accept whatever crumbs that graciously falls from their master's table like grateful dogs? Who will compensate the families of the over 30,000 easterners (Igbos, Efik, Ibibio, Urhobo, Itsekiri, Ijaw e.t.c) who were brutally slaughtered in the Northern pogroms of 1966-67? Who will compensate the thousand of Igbos killed in the north and those whose properties are burnt under the slightest pretext? Who will compensate the families of the hundreds of Igbo officers who lost their lives in the July 29 coup, many of whom knew nothing about the January 15 coup and whose only sin was that they were "igbo" or "of eastern origin"? And what of the several hundred males executed by rampaging Nigerian soldiers under the command of then Lt Col Murtala Mohammed in Asaba in 1968? Before I am accused of playing the victim here, I am not in any way justifying the January 15 revolution in which mainly Northern and Western politicians and officers were killed. Such was the effect of military misadventure into the Nigerian polity and we are yet to recover from its effects even till today. Dr Junaid Mohammed should realise that in mentioning the civil war, he has opened an old would which the nation has been longing for it to heal. He also went ahead to threaten ndigbo with dire consequences if they attempted secession. May I ask him where in Ezeife's statement he mentioned that Igbos would pull out of Nigeria if Buhari did not appoint them into positions in his government. It amounts to oral diarrhea and utter recklessness for a man of his stature to descend so low as to threaten a third of the population of Nigeria, without it backfiring. In my opinion, Mohammed's irresponsible outburst is nothing short of a call for genocide on ndigbo. It is seditious and treasonable and every Igbo nay Nigerian should rise up in condemnation of this evil act. It is obvious that he is still suffering from delusion of grandeur and hangover from the post civil war days where the immediate policy of the government of the day was making sure "the enemies pay for waging a war against Nigeria" The earlier he wakes up to the reality that every Nigerian no matter his tribe, race, creed or colour has the fundamental rights to aspire to any position in Nigeria, the better for him. The likes of Dr Junaid Mohammed are the reason nepotism still reigns supreme in the country today. The same nepotism that brought the military to its knees in the IBB days and provoked middle belt officers led by Gideon Orkar to attempt a coup and excise the core north from the Nigerian map. My advice to him is to focus his energies on the war against the insurgency in the North especially the North East and stop stoking the embers of war. President Buhari should keep people like Mohammed far away from him as they will only serve to pollute his mind further and keep his eye away from the ball. Such irredeemable tribalists deserve only one place, in the dustbins of history. (Nonso Ndibe is a Pharmacist and Political Analyst. Follow me on twitter @NonsoOdimegwu)

Cost of President Buhari's
trip to United States grossly
exaggerated
Our attention has been drawn to
an editorial published in the
Nigerian Pilot of August 2, 2015 and
an earlier report in which the total
cost of President Muhammadu
Buhari's recent trip to the U.S. was
estimated at N2.2 billion.
It is very sad that in this age of
free-flowing information and in this
era of CHANGE, a media
organisation would make itself
available as a vehicle to peddle a
lie of such low and ignominious
quality.
Contrary to the newspaper's
assertions, the total cost of the trip
to the Nigerian taxpayer was at the
most minimal, in line with the
policy of this administration to cut
waste and extravagance.
In point of fact, the total amount
expended on the trip by the Office
of the Presidentamounted to
nothing near ten per cent of the
speculated figure.
Owing to the free accommodation
provided by the host government,
all the personal staff who
accompanied the President on the
trip received reduced allowances.
His son, Yusuf, received neither
allowances nor estacode. The five
Governors on the trip each paid his
own way. Permanent Secretaries
who traveled on the delegation did
so in accordance with extant rules
and none of them exceeded their
estacode entitlements.
Apart from the Nigerian Pilot's
mischievous mathematics, it is
shortsighted and misleading of the
newspaper to have claimed that
President Buhari's trip to the U.S.
achieved nothing.
Nigerian-US relations had suffered
severely over the past few years.
That relationship has now been
reset. The benefits of this symbiotic
relationship will become more and
more evident as the Buhari
administration continues to tackle
the challenges of corruption,
security and the economy.
Some of the more immediate
benefits of the President's trip to
the U.S include: the proposed $2.1
billion fund from the World Bank
for the re-development of the
northeast battered by Boko Haram;
$5 billion from US investors in
Nigeria's agriculture sector; $1.5
billion investment in the Nigerian
health sector; and another $5
billion investment from the U.S. in
our country's power sector.
Also, as things stand at the
moment, the embargo on the sale
of weapons sales to Nigeria is in
the process of being removed.
The trip to the U.S by President
Buhari was definitely very
successful and beneficial to Nigeria.
Only those rabidly determined to
find faults unnecessarily will cook
up falsehood in a futile effort to
rake up murk where none exists.

Wardrobe Allowance Is N506,000 Annually For Senators - Ekweremadu The Deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu has revealed that each Nigerian senator collects N506,600 annually as Wardrobe allowance. He made the statement on his official twitter page today while reacting to the news of N9billion to be paid to members of the 8th assembly for the same purpose. On the issue of making their earnings known to Nigerians, Ekweremadu said, "I urge you to remain patient as RMFAC will be publishing details of allowances on their website." Also reacting to the same issue, Senate President, Bukola Saraki cleared air on the N8.64billion bogus wardrobe allowance to lawmakers as reported in the media, saying the Commission is charged with fixing of remunerations to public office holders and advise the media to be more accurate in their reporting. Also speaking in the same vein, the the Chairman of Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) Engr Elias Mbam condemned the recent media report that exaggerated the wardrobe allowances of Senators and members of the House of Representatives saying, that wardrobe allowance is 25 percent of the basic salary which when broken down amounts to N506, 600 per legislator, per annum. He advised that the agency operates a functional website where information concerning the day-to-day activities of the agency is published. IGP Orders Arrest Of Anambra Lady Contractor For Duping Businessman Of N50M The Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase yesterday ordered for the arrest of Anambra born lady contractor based in Abuja over fraud. The woman, Nkolika Imo from Ukpor, Nnewi South Local Government Area of the state was said to have collected a total sum of N50million from an Anambra based businessman under false pretense and fraud. The order for her arrest was issued following a petition forwarded by Chief Chris Uche (SAN) and Co, of No 34 Kumasi Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja on behalf of Chief Don Okonkwo. In the petition dated May 9, 2015 and titled, " Petition against serious threat to life, fraudulent misrepresentation by one Nkolika Imo", the petitioner alleged among other things that the said Nkolika who claimed to be a contractor with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) told Chief Okonkwo that she was awarded a contract by INEC for the printing and production of electoral materials. That she presented contract documents to Mr Okonkwo and convinced him to help in financing the execution of the contract on the understanding that both of them would equally share the proceeds of the contract which was put at N28million. It was alleged that based on the fraudulent misrepresentation, Chief Okonkwo unsuspectingly paid over to the said Nkolika Imo the sum of N20,000,000 by bank transfer into her First Bank PLC account, and the sum of N30,000,000 into her Fidelity Bank PLC account on the understanding that both of them would equally share the proceeds which amounted to N28,000,000. "Our client has just discovered that the said Nkolika Imo had secretly used our client's money to execute the contract and had been paid by INEC, which sum includes our client's N50million she had converted to her own use in what is now an advance fee fraud played on our client", the petition stressed. It stated that all telephone calls by the victim of the fraud to her phone number proved abortive as she refused to pick his calls but rather sent some unknown persons who the victim believed were members of her advance fee fraud syndicate, who called Chief Okonkwo's phone at very odd hours threatening to kill him if he did not forget the N50million. It stated further that, "based on the foregoing we are constrained to immediately intervene in this matter and arrest and prosecute the said Nkolika Imo before she absconds from Nigeria". According to the petition, there was information that the lady contractor who runs an outfit called Ada Di Ora Mma Foundation was planning to bolt away from Nigeria. The petitioner also requested that she be compelled to enter into an undertaking to be held responsible for any form of injury to our client or his family in consequence of the threat by her agents.
