Borno Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has launched 610 taxis, tricycles and buses to enhance urban mass transportation in Maiduguri and parts of Jere and Konduga Local Government Areas which fall under the metropolis.

Zulum arrived Maiduguri after his presidential press briefing in Abuja today, Thursday, and drove from
the airport to Ramat Square in Maiduguri, where he launched 610 means of transportation which combine 100 Toyota LE cars for city taxis, 500 tricycles popularly known as ‘Keke NAPEP’ and 10 Ashok Leyland buses each with capacity for 41 passengers.

While the 10 buses were left under the custody of Borno Express Transport Corporation for intracity services, the 500 tricycles were allocated to 2000 operators with each tricycle owned by a group of four unemployed persons. The 100 taxis were also allocated to 200 persons with each to be owned by two, making a total of 2,200, the number of persons who benefited from the tricycles and taxis.

Modalities for the distribution were arrived at after Governor Zulum held meetings with leaders of different associations of Keke NAPEP operators who informed the governor that some of their members form groups to own tricycles and they have their ways of jointly managing them and sharing profits.

Before Zulum’s launch, the State Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Abubakar Tijjani, assured the governor of effective and efficient supervision to ensure functional deployment to routes in line with the governor’s goal of increasing access to mass transport in the metropolis.

On security integrated into the tricycles and taxis, Managing Director and Chief Executive of Bexil Computers & Communications, Yusuf
Hayatuddeen, said each of the 500 tricycles has digital stickers from which passengers can use smart phones to access essential data of all operators. He also explained that with the stickers, movements of the tricycles will be tracked to ensure each operator only operates within communities they are expected to serve.

… Grants N50m to 1,000 Keke Napep operators

Aside the 2,200 persons allocated the tricycles and taxis, Governor Zulum also granted N50m to 1000 members of different Keke NAPEP operators who did not benefit from the launch given the fact that the associations have thousands of members, some of whom either own tricycles or work as riders and spare-riders.

The 1,000 persons was to each receive N50,000 as social support.

A combine total of 3,200 youths benefitted from the distribution of the tricycles, taxis and grant.

Project: Introduction of Ambulance Services

Scope: 300 Ambulances set aside to provide 24 hours medical services in the 23 local government areas of Sokoto State. In addition, ambulances have been stationed in major highways to provide quick services in times of emergency. Also, a Central Communication Centre has been established in Sokoto to coordinate the activities of the ambulances statewide.

Status: Vehicles delivered with some already in use. Other components are presently undergoing training for launch at a future date.

NAF COMMISSIONS PLANT TO PRODUCE OXYGEN FOR FIGHTER PILOTS AND MEDICAL CENTRES

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has commissioned a Liquid Oxygen (LOX) plant to ensure the steady supply of oxygen for use by Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter pilots and medical Centres. The CAS also disclosed that the plant would enable the NAF to supply oxygen to government hospitals in Adamawa State. He made the disclosure while commissioning the new LOX plant at the NAF Base in Yola today, 10 July 2017. The idea of building the LOX plant was mooted in 2016 by Air Marshal Abubakar to solve the perennial difficulty being experienced in supplying LOX for use by NAF fighter pilots, who require it especially for high altitude operations. The plant in Yola has the capacity to produce liquid and gaseous oxygen, in addition to nitrogen, another gas needed for the maintenance of aircraft.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the CAS stated that the LOX plant had the capacity to produce 1,000 litres of oxygen every 8 hours, which is in excess of the NAF’s requirements for its air operations and for use in its medical centres across the nation. Accordingly, the CAS has directed appropriate officials to work out the modality for the supply of the excess oxygen to government hospitals in Adamawa State, including the Federal Medical Centre Yola. Air Marshal Abubakar seized the opportunity to appreciate the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration, without which the project would not have become a reality.

In his remarks, the Guest of Honour at the occasion, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Adamawa State, Senator Umaru Jibrilla Bindo, expressed joy at the siting of the project in the State. He was also full of praises for Air Marshal Abubakar, who according to him had added a lot of value to the Adamawa society. Senator Bindo further stated that he was in awe of the legacy being left by the CAS through the numerous projects being commissioned to enhance the operational capability of the NAF.

The Lamido of Adamawa, his royal highness, Dr Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Musadafa as well as heads of military and paramilitary/security agencies in Adamawa State, also witnessed the ceremony. The LOX plant has already commenced production.
