38 Nigerian Universities increase tuition fees – ASUU

No fewer than 38 universities across the country have increased their tuition fees as a result of poor funding by the Federal and State governments.
The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan Chapter, Dr Deji Omole, made this known in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Monday.
The statement which assessed the two years of President Muhammadu Buhari in office, lamented that the current government had made Nigerians poorer.
Omole said that the public education was not taken seriously because most children of the rich and those in high offices do not attend school in Nigeria.
“The latest increment might be attributed to poor funding by the federal and state governments as ASUU poorly rated the President Muhammadu Buhari in the area of funding of university education.
ASUU also noted that it would be difficult for any Nigeria university to effectively compete globally with the inadequate allocation of budgetary funding as prescribed by UNESCO to fund education.

Science/Technology18-year-old Student From Mexico Has Designed A Bra That Can Detect Breast Cancer by husnath(op): 9:01pm On May 04, 2017
An 18-year-old student from Mexico has designed a bra that can help in the early detection of breast cancer.
Julian Rios Cantu said he was inspired inspired by his mother’s battle with the disease which eventually lead to both her breasts being removed.
The bra, otherwise known as EVA, was developed with three friends through his company Higia Technologies, and was created primarily for women with genetic predisposition to cancer.
So how does it work?
Equipped with around 200 biosensors, the bra maps the surface of the breast and is able to monitor changes in temperature, shape and weight.
“Why a bra? Because it allows us to have the breasts in the same position and it doesn’t have to be worn more than one hour a week,” he said in an interview with El Universal .

The Duke of Edinburgh is retiring from royal duties this autumn, Buckingham Palace has announced.
Prince Philip, who turns 96 in June, made the decision himself and the Queen supported him, a spokesman said.
"I'm sorry to hear you're standing down", one man told him at a royal lunch on Thursday. "Well, I can't stand up much," the duke quipped.
The duke will attend already scheduled engagements between now and August but will not accept new invitations.
The Queen "will continue to carry out a full programme of official engagements", the palace
The duke carried out 110 days of engagements in 2016, making him the fifth busiest member of the royal family, according to Court Circular listings.
He is patron, president or a member of more than 780 organisations and will continue to be associated with them, but "will no longer play an active role by attending engagements", Buckingham Palace said.
In the statement, the spokesman said the duke "may still choose to attend certain public events from time to time". Hours after the announcement, Prince Philip was at his 26th public engagement of 2017: a service and lunch for members of the Order of Merit at St James's Palace. At the reception, the duke quipped to mathematician Sir Michael Atiyah that he "can't stand up much".

TravelDubai Becomes First City To Get Its Own Microsoft Font by husnath(op): 8:29pm On May 04, 2017
Not content with having the world's tallest building and biggest shopping centre, Dubai has become the first city to get its own Microsoft designed font.
The typeface comes in both Latin and Arabic script, and will be available in 23 languages.
Government bodies have been told to use it in official correspondence.
But given the human rights record of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates, eyebrows will be raised at claims it is a font of "self-expression".
'Create harmony' Dubai's Crown Prince Hamdan bin Mohammed al-Maktoum said he had been personally involved in "all the stages" of the development of the font. It was "a very important step for us as part of our continuous efforts to be ranked first in the digital world," he added.
"We are confident that this new font and its unique specifications will prove popular among other fonts used online and in smart technologies across the world".
Dubai's government said the typeface's design "reflects modernity and is inspired by the city" and "was designed to create harmony between Latin and Arabic".
When self expression isn't usually your type
"Self-expression is an art form," says the blurb accompanying the launch of this font .
"Through it you share who you are, what you think and how you feel to the world. To do so you need a medium capable of capturing the nuances of everything you have to say.
"The Dubai Font does exactly that. It is a new global medium for self-expression."

NDLEA Intercepts Record N4b Ephedrine Haul At Murtala Muhammed International Airport
|SR According to the agency, the record haul had a total weight of 83.390 kilogrammes.
The NDLEA also disclosed that two bags, with one containing heroin and arriving in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, and another bearing cannabis, being exported to London, were abandoned at the same airport by traffickers. A statement by the NDLEA spokesman, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, said the seized ephedrine has a street value of N4 billion.
The anti-narcotics agency equally disclosed the substance was concealed in artificial female hair by a suspected drug trafficking syndicate and was headed to South Africa.
The statement gave the names of the suspects as Unegbu Daniel Chukwu, 42; Ettah Joseph, 28; and Wopara Bright, 31.
The NDLEA spokesman added that that the agency’s counter-narcotic measures at the airport will intensify on a daily basis.
Also commenting on the seizures, the Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Colonel Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah (retd.), explained that the ephedrine was intercepted at the departure hall during outward screening of a South African Airways flight to Johannesburg, South Africa.
He added that three suspects, including luggage handlers and a clearing agent, are currently being interrogated in connection with the crime.
Colonel Abdallah warned that the agency will frustrate attempts by criminal syndicates to sully the country's image.
“Anti-narcotic agents have been placed on the alert and will remain vigilant in detecting any act of sabotage. The case is under investigation and anyone found wanting shall be prosecuted in line with the NDLEA Act," he said.
Preliminary investigation, said the NDLEA, revealed that Unegbu Daniel, an indigene of Anambra State working as a clearing agent, collected the luggage from his client and took it to the airport.
Two luggage handlers, who allegedly worked with him, were identified as Ettah Joseph from Cross River State and Wopara Bright from Rivers State.
The cases, explained the NDLEA, are under investigation aimed at uncovering the cartel behind the illegal shipment.

OIL IN THE NORTH AND RESOURCE CONTROL

By Jimoh Sule

An average northerner is never a greedy person even if he is damn corrupt. And I don't think there is anybody that has cheerfully distributed a looted funds across the country like Dasuki a northerner. I don't know why many southerner hates to hear about crude oil exploration in the north. WHY?
The funny thing is the same north commenced the
exploration in the Niger-Delta many years back and
developed it to what it is today without an acts of jealousy
of not be found in the north.

The recent oil exploration in Lagos was stopped by previous government of PDP, but another northerner PMB came and the exploration became real.
The facts that the crude oil price has fall globally has not
make the product a bad commodity because countries like
China, Indians and many high oil consuming nations in
Europe has not relent in their efforts to discover their own
crude because of the huge resources they spend in
importing these oil products.

Back in Nigeria, are we meeting our 2.2m quota with the
militancy in Niger-Delta? The answer is NO.
Do we need more crude oil to earns FOREX with the
situation of our economy currently? The answer is YES.
Then why exploring oil in the north become the problem of
some from South? Why?
Federal Government must take the lead in the oil exploration in that insurgency ravage region to creates confidence to private investors that the place is good for all business. No private investor will go to North-East if government is not there doing it for public conviction that the insurgency is over.

Northerners are being called PARASITES because of
absence of crude whereas just 'Tomatoes Disease'
In the north few months back increased the cost of a basket from N1000 to N25, 000. Tell me assuming north want to control the supply of tomatoes to the south, how much do you think the cost will be?
Four States of Benue, Nassarawa, Taraba and Niger from
the Parasite-North produces 70% of the total yam output in
Nigeria.

The north feeds the nation and never talk of resource
control, or agricultural produce are not resources but only
oil? Kainji and Shiroro few years back were the two major power plants generating electricity in Nigeria, north never asked for 13% derivation or called for the cancellation of 'National Grid' how much more of controlling it.

Crude oil is not only present in Lake-Chad but also in Bida
and Sokoto basin, an extension of southern Niger-Republic
basin with vast crude oil deposit that is massively been
explored presently.

No matter how much we are been faced with hunger in
Nigeria brought about by the fall in global oil price,
corruption and mismanagement, nobody would ever drink
oil even if it is free..
North will never ask for resource control. But will be glad
not to be seen any longer as parasites because of oil and a
region of low financial contribution to the centre.
