APC Seeking Postponement Of National Assembly Leadership Elections To Enable Buhari’s Intervention Faced with a looming crisis in securing the selection of its favored candidates for leadership posts at the Senate and House of Representatives, officials of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are weighing measures to force the incoming class of National Assembly members to postpone their convening beyond Wednesday. Mr. Buhari is expected back in Abuja on Thursday night after attending the ongoing G7 meeting in Germany. Some APC lawmakers led by for former Governor Bukola Saraki of Kwara State have reportedly reached an alliance with People’s Democratic Party lawmakers overnight to present a PDP candidate as President of the Senate. Immediate past Senate President, David Mark, was named as the likely beneficiary of Mr. Saraki’s revolt. Former Governor Saraki is reportedly irate that he was schemed out of the APC’s nomination for the Senate Presidency. Last Saturday, the party bypassed the former governor amid concerns that he could not be totally relied upon to lead an effective and cooperative Senate that would give President Buhari reliable legislative backing. Instead, the APC adopted Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan from Nigeria’s northeast state of Yobe as its candidate for the Senate Presidency. SaharaReporters learnt that President Buhari had expressed serious concerns to some associates that a Nigerian Senate led by Mr. Saraki would not lend him the necessary legislative backing to wage a major war against corruption. Mr. Saraki carries a lot of corruption baggage, dating back to his days as an executive of the defunct Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria, and continuing with his tenure as Kwara State governor. SaharaReporters also learned that another group of lawmakers in the House of Representatives were also upset with the APC’s choice of Lagos legislator, Femi Gbajabiamila, as the party’s sole candidate for Speaker. Yakubu Dogara, an aspirant for the speakership who hails from Bauchi State, leads the disaffected legislators opposed to Mr. Gbajabiamila. An APC executive told SaharaReporters that some party leaders consider Mr. Saraki as the wrecking ball who must be subdued to ensure that the party does not lose the leadership of the Senate. In the midst of the internal squabble within the APC, SaharaReporters learnt that former Senate President David Mark has been mobilizing disgruntled APC senators to back him for a third term in the premier post at the Senate. Another source disclosed that several PDP senators were demanding outrageous sums of money from APC leaders in exchange for casting their votes for candidates favored by the party. source:: http://saharareporters.com/2015/06/08/apc-seeking-postponement-national-assembly-leadership-elections-enable-buhari’s |

The Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram released a video online on Tuesday, rejecting the claims of the Nigerian military that it has been routed by a four-nation offensive, which doesn’t show Abubakar Shekau the group’s leader. The speaker in the 10-minute message which was posted on the video-sharing site YouTube said “Most of our territory is still under our control”. He called Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger, who have been battling the Islamists, “the lying coalition partners”. The video bears the new logo “Islamic State in West Africa” and follows the Nigerian militants’ pledge of allegiance in an audio message in March to the IS group, that has overrun large parts of Syria and Iraq. The message is the first video released by the terrorist group since February, when Shekau vowed to disrupt Nigeria’s elections. Shekau has featured prominently in most of the group’s videos over the last three years and his absence in the latest message will likely stir further debate on his whereabouts or possible death. |
The Ministry of Defence Health Implementation Programme (HIP) is to start a new study on an experimental Ebola vaccine late June. Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, ahead of next week’s annual clinical summit trial, Director-General of HIP, Maj-Gen Life Ajemba, said the MOD’s Walter Reed Programme, which it runs in collaboration with the US Department of Defence, scaled through rigorous investigations to qualify for the international multi-nation study. “For any research to be done, it means your infrastructure and personnel training has to improve, so research helps us to advance,” Ajemba said. The announcement comes ahead of next week’s third annual clinical trial summit in Lagos, organised by the Association for Good Clinical Practice in Nigeria (AGCPIN), to update the state of clinical trials in Nigeria and map the challenges. Researchers are looking to test whether a single dose of an experimental vaccine developed by GSK Biologicals is safe and can provoke an immune response against the Zaire species of Ebola virus in African adults. The Ministry of Defence’s Health Implementation Programme has coded the study RV 429, for a recombinant vectored vaccine. Recombinant vectored vaccines use attenuated DNA of microbes into body cells. RV 429 uses recombinant type-3 adenovirus from chimpanzees as carrier for the vaccine. Previous studies reported in international health journals have shown encouraging results using chimpanzee-based adenovirus in mice and guinea pigs. MOD’s HIP, which started in 2005 as the Emergency Programme Implementation Committee, in response to HIV epidemic, will use Abuja as its site, while Jos University Teaching Hospital, a study partner, will site its study in Jos, according to Brig-Gen Ojor Ayemoba, Director of MOD’s Reference Laboratory in Asokoro, Abuja. Both institutions give Nigeria two studies, the only African country among five to have more than one study. source: http://dailytrust.com.ng/daily/index.php/health/56104-military-juth-start-ebola-clinical-trial-june |
Service Chiefs say they will soon carry out President Muhammadu Buhari's directive to relocate the military command and control centre to Maiduguri, Borno State, to tackle the Boko Haram insurgent. The Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral Usman Jibrin, stated this while addressing State House journalists on Tuesday after a three-hour closed-door meeting Buhari held with the security chiefs at the Defence House in Abuja. The president had stated in his inaugural speech on Friday that victory against the sect could not be achieved by basing the command and control centre in Abuja, saying "The command centre will be relocated to Maiduguri and remain until Boko Haram is completely subdued". Fielding question on when the command centre would be relocated to Maiduguri, the Chief of Naval Staff said: "The command center, we're the ones to go back and work on it. Soon, it will be carried out. It is a presidential directive. It must be carried out, and we must do that as quickly as possible". Jubrin said the armed forces would sustain the tempo of their success against the insurgents, asking Nigerians to continue to support the military by providing the needed intelligence. "As to the human beings, their movements and suspicious movement should be reported to the police |
