Lessons of the Blessed Month of Ramadān Followed by Insights from the Sacred Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah | Shaykh Sa‘ad al-Khathlān, [may Allāh preserve him].

Lesson Four: The Essence of Fasting

All praise and thanks is due to Allāh, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Source of Peace, the One exalted in majesty, eternity, and perpetuity. And may blessings and peace be upon the noblest of creation, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his righteous companions.

Allāh, the Most High, declares: ‘O’ you who have believed, fasting has been prescribed upon you as it was prescribed upon those before you, so that you may attain piety.’ ¹

Thus, the divine wisdom behind the obligation of fasting is the attainment of piety (taqwa). This is realised through abstaining from sins and engaging in acts of devotion, ensuring that one's state during fasting is distinct from their state before it.
This transformation is evident in many sincere believers who, upon the arrival of Ramadān, undergo a profound change, inclining toward the mosques and increasing in acts of worship.

O’ my fellow Muslim, reflect upon your fasting - does it yield this noble fruit of piety? If you observe within yourself an eagerness toward obedience in Ramaḍān, then your fast has indeed achieved its intended purpose. However, if your state in Ramadān remains unchanged or even declines, then you must re-examine yourself, for your fasting has not fulfilled its ultimate aim: ‘so that you may attain piety.’

The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Whoever does not abandon false speech and acting upon it, then Allāh has no need for him to abandon his food and drink.’ ²

This profound hadeeth elucidates that the reality of fasting extends far beyond mere abstinence from physical nullifiers such as food and drink. Rather, it encompasses refraining from both verbal and physical sins. While avoiding transgressions is an obligation at all times, its significance is heightened during fasting.

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ specifically identified verbal sins as ‘false speech’ and physical sins as ‘acting upon it.’ Thus, any sin committed by the fasting person diminishes the reward of their fast. Should such sins become excessive, the individual may reach the grievous state described in the hadith: ‘Allāh has no need for him to abandon his food and drink.’

Safeguarding One’s Fast

A fasting person must exert great care in preserving their fast by safeguarding their limbs from sin, restraining their tongue from prohibited speech, averting their gaze from that which is forbidden, closing their ears to impermissible sounds, and ensuring that all their faculties remain untouched by disobedience.

Let us guard our fast and abstain from backbiting. Many among the pious predecessors, when fasting, would seclude themselves in mosques, saying:
‘We are safeguarding our fast.’

The Prophet’s ﷺ statement, ‘Allāh has no need for him to abandon his food and drink’ - implies that while such a fast may formally fulfill the obligation, it does not merit divine acceptance or reward.

This parallels the prayer of one who, from the moment they commence until the moment they conclude, is entirely distracted by fleeting thoughts. While their obligation is technically discharged, having completed its pillars, conditions, and requirements, their reward is measured solely by the extent of their conscious devotion.

This profound truth must remain ever-present in the mind of every Muslim. If one is on the verge of committing a verbal or physical transgression, they should remind themselves that they are fasting and exercise restraint, even if it requires immense effort. While repelling harm is generally permissible, fasting necessitates a greater degree of self-restraint.

Allāh, the Most High, states: ‘So if someone transgresses against you, then retaliate in a like manner.’ ³

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“When two people revile each other, the burden of sin falls upon the one who initiated it, unless the wronged party transgresses the bounds.” ⁴

Thus, if someone insults you, you are permitted to respond in kind, but only to the extent of their insult. However, if you are fasting, you should refrain from retaliating out of reverence for the sanctity of fasting, in accordance with the Prophet’s (ﷺ) words:

“If someone insults or fights him, let him say: ‘Indeed, I am a fasting person.’” ⁵

Closing Supplication

O’ Allāh, bless us in this sacred month of Ramaḍān, assist us in completing its fast and prayers in a manner pleasing to You. Protect us from Your displeasure and from falling into sin. Forgive us, our parents, and all the believers. And may Allāh bestow His peace and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
