Education / Re: UNIMAID Graduates 172 First-class Students by hyzich(m): 12:02pm On Apr 17, 2016 |
it pains me when people talk out of sheer hatred and ignorance. do you mean that a school with 8 of her alumni currently serving as vice chancellors is substandard? I can tell you with full confidence that these first class merit it, infact ntayi bandawa graduated from unimaid with 3.93, i repeat 3.93 but went to law school and bagged a firstclass, are you still doubting there products? ask unilorin students how unimaid law students distinguished themselves during a program held there. I'm a yoruba boy with this orientation that schooling in north is easy but believe me I was disappointed cos it wasn't easy at all but I'm happy cos am a student of unimaid and I'm made and i can compete with any graduate from any southern university infact I have a friend in uniben who's a 4 pointer that will share questions with me on whatsapp and I'll do it happily and easily.. Therefore, please get your facts right before casting aspersion and for your info unimaid is ranked number 9 by NUC so deal with it.. |
Education / 172 Make First Class At Unimaid 22nd -25th Combined Convocation by hyzich(m): 6:52pm On Apr 14, 2016 |
University of Maiduguri will be honouring 172 graduates who made First Class, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Ibrahim Njodi, has said. Briefing journalists ahead of the joint convocation and 40th anniversary of the university billed to hold next Saturday, Njodi explained that the 172 exceptional students graduated between 2010 and 2015 but would be honoured at a joint convocation covering the time. He said: “The university will finally hold its 22nd convocation and 40th anniversary for the award of degrees, diplomas and certificates. “Summary for the statistics of undergraduate students shows that a total of 37,259 will be graduating. It is gratifying to note that 172 students obtained First Class degrees in the five sets that we are graduating. “Similarly, statistics for the Postgraduate degree showed that, 823 students will be graduating from the school of postgraduate studies. Of this figure, a total of 192 students will receive Doctorate Degree, 1,498 Masters Degrees while 2,133 will receive Postgraduate Diploma.” He also disclosed that 362 students are expected to receive certificates, while 6,926 will bag diplomas from the consultancy services, saying so far the total number of students who graduated from the university since its establishment 40 years ago, stood at 101,5141. According to the VC, during the ceremony, the institution will confer Honorary Doctorate Degrees on three personalities, comprising the former head of state, late Gen. Murtala Ramat Mohammed, who will be conferred with Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) posthumously. Others were Prof. Russell Galen Schuh, a renewed linguist from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), who would be awarded a Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) as well ad the Emir of Kano, His Royal Highness, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who would be conferred with Doctor of Science, (Honoris Causa). The vice chancellor equally hinted that Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefele is expected to deliver a convocation lecture on “ Managing the Delimma of Commodity Price Declines in an Oil Dependent Economy “ http://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2016/04/14/unimaid-gets-172-first-class-graduates/ 1 Like |

Education / What's Your Opinion On The Proliferation Of Firstclass Degree? by hyzich(m): 10:49pm On Feb 29, 2016 |
This is the view of daily trust editor on the proliferation of firstclass degree. do you agree with it? do you have a counter-claim on it? share your views to know the way forward. A total of 178 out of the 5,472 students graduating from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) during the institution’s convocation ceremony holding this week are graduating with First Class degrees. Vice Chancellor of Unilag Prof. Rahman Bello disclosed this at a pre- convocation press briefing in Lagos. The convocation ceremonies are scheduled to commence tomorrow, March 1. A total of 10,907 graduating students will receive degrees, diplomas and certificates at this year’s convocation. While 5,472 of the figure will be awarded first degrees, 5435 graduating students will receive postgraduate degrees. The high number of first class degrees with which students are graduating from Nigerian universities in recent years is raising serious concerns about the credibility of our universities’ examination processes. Besides Unilag, other universities have also awarded excessive numbers of first class degrees in recent times. They include Covenant University in Ogun state which awarded 140 graduating students with first class degrees; Babcock University also in Ogun state which awarded first class degrees to 52 students out of 1,059 graduating students; Adeleke University in Ede which awarded first class degrees to 10 per cent of its 125 pioneer graduating students; and Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti which awarded first class degrees to 65 graduating students. When the proliferation of first class degrees was first noticed at our private universities, the trend was believed to be a ‘recompense’ for the huge tuition fees charged by such institutions. However, the trend has become more disturbing now that public and first generation universities have joined the bandwagon of the first class degree rain. For instance, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria at its 38th convocation ceremony which held recently awarded 89 graduating students with first class degrees. Before now, first class degree from a university was a rare honour bestowed upon very deserving graduating students whose intellectual capacities are beyond reproach. There were fewer students (whose total number rarely exceeded one digit) graduating with first class degrees at a time when universities in Nigeria had well-equipped libraries and laboratories, adequate number of high quality lecturers who were committed to teaching and research, comfortable classroom and hostel accommodations, and stable academic calendar. In the past, many universities had convocation ceremonies that were without one first class degree graduate. In those glorious days, a brilliant student who never missed his lectures and who presented his facts in tests and examinations in a particular course still ended up with a ‘C’ grade, equivalent to Second Class Lower Division. A student earned a ‘B’ grade which is equivalent to Second Class Upper Division if he or she, in addition to what a ‘C’ grade student did, further read textbooks for more facts of knowledge. An ‘A’ was an exception student who impressed and dazzled the examiner with his grasp of the subject matter. It is thus amazing to find more students graduating in the first class division now that most Nigerian universities suffer from poorly equipped libraries and laboratories, poorly educated lecturers and very unstable academic calendars frequently disrupted by long periods of strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU). The main reason advanced by ASUU for many of its strikes was dearth of teaching and learning facilities in the universities. Employers of labour have equally complained of the relatively poor quality of graduates from Nigerian universities these days. It is therefore amazing that a rain of first class degrees should accompany this situation. To give credibility to the degrees awarded by Nigerian universities, there is need for the institutions to strengthen examinations and results processing procedures. Like the examination questions, results for every course should be duly subjected to internal and external moderations by competent hands. Departmental and faculty examination boards as well as Senate members in universities should sincerely be seen to uphold the trust bestowed upon them by the ethical principles of their profession. We call on the National Universities Commission (NUC), which is the regulatory agency, to ensure that first class degrees awarded by universities do not contradict the realities of the human and material resources that obtain in the institutions. www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/editorial/rain-of-first-class-degrees/135749.html |

Crime / multiple explosions Rock Borno Communities. by hyzich(m): 12:11pm On Oct 04, 2015 |
Multiple explosions have been heard from the Kayamala and Dalori areas of Borno State, prompting panicked residents to flee the areas on Sunday. “The sound of bomb explosions is being heard from Kayamla and Dalori along Bama Road since around 7:00 am today,” said Kursi Yusuf, an employee at the nearby University of Maiduguri. “We are not sure whether the terrorists are planning to invade the town but the sound vibrating is devastating.” Khadija Mustapha, a resident of Dalori Quarters, said she had fled her home with her three daughters for fear of being caught in the explosions. “I don’t know what will happen. The sound of the explosives is really disturbing,” she said. “Many of us… have vacated our homes.” A military officer who did not want to be named confirmed the series of blasts but said troops were on top of the situation. “The terrorists will not have their way,” he said. Boko Haram has repeatedly attacked Maiduguri; with at least 10 people killed and 39 others injured on Thursday night when four suicide bombers blew themselves up in the city. Two explosions that ripped through the outskirts of Abuja on Friday left 18 people dead and 41 wounded, rescue officials said on Saturday, in the latest bloodshed blamed on Boko Haram Islamists. President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the attacks, as did the US embassy in Abuja. http://dailytimes.com.ng/explosions-rock-borno-communities/ |

Politics / Debtor States, Others Spend #6b To Maintain Private Jet. by hyzich(m): 1:38pm On Sep 13, 2015 |
As the cash crunch continues to hit the federal
and state governments across the country
owing to declining global oil prices, SUNDAY
PUNCH has gathered that 11 private jets and
helicopters, worth N36.54bn and owned by
seven state governments, are being maintained
with about N6bn yearly.
The jets
and
helicopters
are owned
by Akwa
Ibom,
Rivers,
Cross River, Bauchi, Taraba, Osun and
Lagos states.
Rivers, which owed its workers between three
and 10 months’ salaries as of June 20, 2015,
has two private jets and one helicopter. They
are:
Bombardier Global 5000 acquired for $45m
(N8.9bn);
Embraer Legacy 600, which goes for about
$16m (N3.152bn);
and an Augusta Westland helicopter, which
goes for about $10m (N1.97bn), according to
aircraftcompare.com, an online aviation
portal that provides estimated prices of
aircraft.
The Taraba State Government, which does not
owe its workers owns:
two Embraer ERJ 145, with each going for
$21m (N4.13bn),
Akwa Ibom, which as of June 20 had cleared all
outstanding workers’ salaries, owns:
an American-made Gulfstream G450, which
according to aircraftcompare.com, costs
$38.9m (N7.66bn).
Osun state, which as of June 20 owed its
workers seven months’ salaries, has:
a French-made Eurocopter ASS 355
helicopter it said was acquired for N500m
($2.538m at the current official exchange
rate of N197 to the United States dollar).
Cross River owes some of her workers six
months salaries, others have two months’
outstanding. They have:
a Bombardier Dash 8 that industry experts
estimate to worth $10m (N1.97bn).
Bauchi State, which as of June 20 owed two
months’ salaries, has:
one Embraer ERJ 145, which costs $21m
(N4.137bn), according to
aircraftcompare.com.
Lagos, which is not indebted to its workers, has:
two Bell 412 helicopters, with each costing
$6.7m (N1.319bn), according to
aircraftcompare.com estimates. Thus, the
two helicopters cost around $13.4m
(N2.64bn). They were acquired under the
Lagos State Security Trust Fund platform, an
initiative of the state government and private
partners.
The total cost of the 11 private jets and
helicopters is estimated at $198.80m
(N39.17bn).
According to airline chief executives and
industry experts, airlines spend between 15 and
20 per cent of the cost of an aircraft on its
operations yearly. This means not less than
$29.82m (N5.875bn) is spent every year as
running costs on the jets by the seven state
governments.
This is coming just as cash-strapped states
seeking the release of President Muhammadu
Buhari-approved bailout funds have indicated
that they have no plan to sell their private jets
and helicopters in order to ameliorate their
ravaging economic condition.
Osun and Cross River states, which are currently
seeking N34.988bn and N7.856bn respectively
in loans from banks through the Federal
Government bailout package, said rather than
sell their private jets and helicopters, they had
put them into commercial use by leasing them
to some aviation companies.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Cross River
State Governor, Mr. Christian Ita, said:
“We have put the aircraft, Bombardier Dash
8, under Aerocontractors Airlines for
commercial purposes. We bought it so that it
could be used to convey people to the Obudu
Ranch.”
The Director, Bureau of Communications and
Strategy, Governor’s Office, Osun State, Mr.
Semiu Okanlawon, did not pick calls or respond
to text messages sent to his mobile telephone,
but the All Progressive Congress Chairman in
the state, Mr. Adegboyega Famodun, had a few
months ago said the state government had put
the Eurocopter ASS 355 helicopter into
commercial use by leasing it to an airline.
He, however, said the state normally recalled it
whenever it needed it.
Bauchi State, which is seeking N8.6bn in bailout
funds from the Federal Government, could not
readily comment on whether it would sell or put
for lease its Embraer ERJ 145. The plane is
expected to return back to the country from
Morocco any time from now, the state
government said two weeks ago.
However, Lagos, Rivers and Akwa Ibom states,
which have yet to apply for bailout funds
perhaps because they have no need for it,
declined to comment on whether their private
jets and helicopters would be sold or put into
commercial use.
The spokesperson for Governor Akinwumi
Ambode, Mr. Habib Aruna, did not pick calls or
respond to a text message seeking enquiry on
the state’s plan for its two helicopters.
The Special Adviser to the Rivers State
Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Opunabo
Inko-Tariah, said he had not been briefed by the
governor on the plans for the jets.
The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Udom
Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Ekerette
Udo, and the Commissioner of Information, Mr.
Aniekan Umanah, neither picked calls nor
responded to text messages sent to their
telephones on the state’s Gulsstream 450
aircraft.
The Federal Government bailout for the states,
coming as loans from commercial banks, is
repayable at an interest rate of nine per cent
over a 20-year period, according to the Central
Bank of Nigeria. nigeriacamera.net/debtor-states-others-spend-n6bn-to-maintain-private-jets/ www.nigeriacamera.net/debtor-states-others-spend-n6bn-to-maintain-private-jets/ |
Politics / VP Prof. Yemi Osinbanjo Lambasts Northern Leaders by hyzich(m): 1:15pm On Sep 13, 2015 |
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says the present crop of northern leaders is responsible for the backwardness of the region, saying they have abandoned diligence and selfless service and resorted to personal aggrandizement. Osinbajo made the remark at the opening ceremony of Northern Reawakening Forum (NRF) Summit, held under the theme “Building a Safe, Secure and Economically Inclusive Northern Nigeria” and held at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, on Saturday. He regretted that the elite had jettisoned the foundation set by the founding fathers, leading to the challenges confronting the country. “Our history reminds us of the visionary leaders in Nigeria, who fired our imagination through their vision, diligence and selfless service, who did not live or fight to enrich themselves; they did not leave vast personal estates behind, but their names and legacies live in the hearts of the people”, the VP said. “Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Mallam Aminu Kano, J. S. Tarka and countless others clearly understood the varied issues afflicting the region, thought through them, laid the plans and worked selflessly to realize them”. He explained that in the 19 northern states of Nigeria, the human development indices “are by far poorer than the rest of the country”. Osinbajo said the Northern Nigerian Economic Summit of 2012 was the first forum to draw attention to some of the depressing statistics about the condition of the north. www.newsrescue.com/vp-osinbajo-lambasts-northern-leaders/#axzz3lbpsNGPB www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/osinbajo-lambasts-northern-leaders/#sthash.biiXqFUz.dpuf |

Politics / Lt-general Tukur Buratai: The Conqueror Of Boko Haram. by hyzich(m): 8:13am On Sep 13, 2015 |
Lt – Gen Tukur Buratai: The Conqueror Of Boko Haram Tukur Buratai, soldier and historian, has a place in history. If it’s correct that no list of the greatest people of the 20th century is complete without General George C Marshall and that of the World War II without Winston Churchill, the world will remember Buratai as the ‘organiser of victory’ and ‘the last great Nigerian soldier’ in the fight against terrorism. His choice as the Chief of Army Staff was spot on. Not because he hails from the terrorism-ravaged state of Borno, but because of the professionalism and military dispatch with which he carried out the assignment of routing the mindless Boko Haram that slaughtered children, men and women in the North-eastern part of the country. Courageously foxy, brutal in mien and disposition and deliberate in the deployment of troops, Lieutenant General Buratai will enter the pantheon of war heroes, if as the Defence Headquarters said, the expedition will be over before the three months deadline given to uproot the terrorists by President Muhammadu Buhari. Unlike his predecessors who barked orders from the comfort zones of their offices in Abuja or preferred to grandstand in Aso Rock to enunciate strategies, which more often than not failed, Buratai was on the field with the troops. Wednesday morning, he led Nigerian troops on a field inspection of the recaptured strategic town of Gamboru Ngala in Borno State, crossing a bridge to Fatokol where a huge crowd of Nigerians received them with cheers and tears of joy. An appreciative director of defence Information (DDI), Col. Rabe Abubakar, enthused, “these terrorists have been subdued, even if they are adopting other means and are re-strategising, we are also doing the same and pre-empting them. “So, right now, they are completely in disarray, have no command and control of where to plan. We have even taken over their camps that most of them abandoned and are attempting to blend into towns and communities. We have also apprehended some of them and very soon, innocent Nigerians can move back to their communities.” The war against terror took a different turn since July 13 when the rotund service chiefs were replaced with new ones, who, apparently more apolitical, discharged their duties as officers and gentlemen. Buratai, who had been in the trenches with the troops as the commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force which has its headquarters in N’Djamena, Chad, all the same came to the fore, shooting from the hips and with all barrels. He exhibited the uncommon canny to identify with the troops. He exercised with them, ate with them and boosted their morale through welfare packages, including adequate supply of drugs, equipment, compensation with accelerated promotion for deserving gallant soldiers on the field and ensuring that those unjustly court-martialled were given reprieve. At the last count, 3,032 officers and men who would have either been sent to their early graves or imprisoned have regained their love for soldiering, for God and country. But the 20th Chief of Army Staff could also be weird. Said to be an accomplished infantry senior officer, he enjoys the company of wild reptiles and rears snakes. He has two snakes farms in Nasarawa State and keeps some in his personal house in Mararaba on the outskirts of the nation’s capital. Commissioned in 1983, there has been no time that his multiple command, administrative and instructional appointments over his 34 years illustrious career has been called to service more than now. His meritorious discharge of the responsibility at once, restored the confidence of the civil populace in our military as it called to question the judgement, integrity and professionalism of those who had superintended the fight against terror since it broke out in 2009 and for which over 15,000 lives have been reportedly lost. Born November 24, 1960 in Buratai town in Biu local government area of Borno State that has suffered greatly from the brutal threat of the Boko Haram group, General Buratai is a highly decorated officer. He is a Member of Historical Society of Nigeria, with two Master’s Degrees, one in History from the University of Maiduguri and another in Philosophy from the Bangladesh University of Professionals, Dhaka. Buratai attended the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration Course in the year 2000 at Cornwallis Park, Annapolis county, Nova Scotia, Canada and the United Nations Staff and Logistics Officers Course, India. At the height of militancy in the Niger Delta, he was also called upon to quell the uprising. These must have equipped him for the assignment that will place him in the nation’s hall of fame as a soldier-statesman.

The death toll from the collapse of a crane in the Muslim holy city of Mecca has risen to 65, Saudi Arabia's civil defence authority has said. Eighty people were injured when the crane fell on the Grand Mosque, the civil defence authority tweeted. Few other details are available. Images from the scene showed part of a huge red crane had crashed through the roof of the mosque. Mecca is preparing for the annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to arrive in the Saudi city from all over the world later this month. Construction work has been going on at the Grand Mosque for years to make it big enough to cope with the huge numbers of people who come each year, the BBC's Arab Affairs analyst, Sebastian Usher, says. tribuneonlineng.com/sites/default/files/ www.tribuneonlineng.com/65-dead-80-injured-crane-collapses-mecca
