The Civil Societies’ Coalition for Emancipation of Osun state has raised the alarm over the safety of Justice Folahanmi Oloyede following her petition to the House of Assembly asking the lawmakers to impeach Governor Rauf Aregbesola. The group raised the alarm in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Friday by Ebenezer Oladapo. The CSCE said the judge did nothing wrong by speaking the mind of the people of the state who they said had been subjected to hardship through the alleged financial recklessness of the governor. The statement partly read, “There is clandestine move by the state government to intimidate and persecute Justice Oloyede Olamide Folahanmi for daring to speak out in the face of the tyranny that characterised the rule of Mr. Rauf Aregbesola.” The group urged all well meaning citizens of Osun state home and abroad as well as all God-fearing people all over the world to prevail on the state lawmakers to carry out its constitutional duties as is being demanded by the people of Osun state through Oloyede’s petition. Oladapo said while the public servants and other people of the state were starving, political appointees were living in opulence, saying they were buying every available property and building almost everywhere in the state. This, he said, was contrary to the ridicule workers were subjected to, as they were being evicted by their landlords for their inability to pay their rents. The statement read further, “We noted with great pain the goings on in Osun state in recent times vis-à-vis the inability of the government to meet its obligations to the citizens and the untold hardship being experienced by the people which has led to increase in crimes and death of many people, most especially civil servants and pensioners. “Also, there is a debt burden rumoured to be in the region of five hundred billion naira but which true sum has not been disclosed by Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who claimed to have borrowed the monies for infrastructural development. “Deplorable and un-motorable intra-city and inter-city roads. Government hospitals grossly understaffed and without drugs and consumable. A promised cargo airport at Iddo-Osun which can only be described as a heap of sand despite the huge amount said to have been expended on it, several uncompleted, albeit unnecessary, road and environmental beautification projects.” http://www.punchng.com/news/activists-raise-the-alarm-over-osun-judges-safety/ |

Labour unions in Osun State have warned Governor Rauf Aregbesola to stop the plan to cut workers’ salaries by 50 per cent. The Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress in the state, Mr. Jacob Adekomi, who led other labour leaders to address journalists on the issue said on Friday that the decision would lead to an unimaginable chaos if it was not rescinded. The workers said although the state government had not written to inform them officially about the pay cut but they said failure to stop the plan would be met with a very stiff opposition from the workers. According to him, the state government has concluded plans to start paying workers the new rate starting from January 2015. Adekomi said pensioners were paid 50 per cent of their pensions for November 2014 whereas the state government promised to pay them one month during the last meeting. The NLC chairman stated that the salaries of the majority of the workers could not provide their basic needs, saying slashing the pay by 50 per cent would send many of them to their early graves. Adekomi said, “It’s sad to inform the public that government had resolved to cut the salaries of public servants in Osun State by 50 per cent from January 2015 and we want to unequivocally say that it is unacceptable to the entire workforce in the State of Osun. It is satanic, wicked and suicidal for any government to arrive at this position after he had failed in his constitutional responsibilities for the past eight months. ” Never will the workers accept this. The situation the state government found itself was a product of its systemic failure and any attempt to cut the salaries of workers in the state by one per cent will be vehemently resisted and will lead to unimaginable chaos.” Adekomi said the entire workforce in the state had been loyal to the Aregbesola administration but expressed surprise at the decision of the governor to slash the salaries of workers without negotiating with them on it. Asked if the workers would accept pruning of the workforce if the government decided to toe that line, the NLC chairman said the workers would insist on getting all their salaries and gratuities before such policy could be implemented. The press conference was punctuated with anti government songs by workers present calling the governor unprintable names. The NLC boss added, ” We want to place on record that as a direct result of the failure on the part of the government to fulfill its constitutional responsibility, we had lost a couple of workers in the cold hands of death, while the chairman of pensioners in the state, at a meeting with the government on Tuesday June 20, 2015, confirmed that 350 deaths were recorded among pensioners in the last four months.” The state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Mr. Wakeel Amuda, said workers should be ready to participate in a massive protest anytime soon if the government failed to rescind its decision of the pay cut. Efforts to get the reaction of the governor to the salary cut were unsuccessful. Telephone calls to the governor’s media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, were not answered. http://www.punchng.com/news/salary-cut-ii-lead-to-chaos-workers-tell-aregbesola/ HzRF: |

Primary school teachers and local government workers in Osun State have vowed to reject the alleged planned payment of 60 per cent of their March 2015 salaries by the state government. Some of the workers who fall into these categories told our correspondent in Osogbo on Thursday that they were reliably informed that government officials had taken the payment order to banks but rescinded the plan when they heard that workers had kicked against it. The workers, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said paying their salaries in piece meal had rendered such payment useless for the workers. One of the workers said, “We were reliably informed that the government took 60 per cent of our salaries to the bank. That is salaries of primary school teachers and local government workers but we have asked our leaders to tell those behind the plan to stop it. “They want to pay 60 per cent of our March salary and they would go and announce that they have paid a full salary. We won’t accept that. “Even the labour leaders were on Tuesday fooled into believing that the pensioners would be paid one month. The pensioners later discovered that the government only paid them 50 per cent of their November 2014 pension.” The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the state, Mr. Jacob Adekomi, could not be reached as calls put across to his telephone indicated that it was switched off. But the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Mr. Wakeel Amuda, when contacted, said he heard that government wanted to pay 60 per cent of March salary for primary school teachers and council workers. He, however, said he had been told that the government had rescinded the decision to pay workers 60 per cent of March salary. Amuda said, “We heard it as a rumour that the government had concluded the plan to pay 60 per cent of March salaries for local government workers and primary teachers. “They must not make the mistake of making part payment because the union will resist it. They have assured us that they will pay in full.” Asked if primary school teachers and council workers would suspend their strike if the March salary was paid in full , Amuda said “they will not until the government paid all the workers their five months salaries.” http://www.punchng.com/news/osun-workers-vow-to-reject-part-payment-for-march/ HzRF: |
