CrimeVigilantes In Niger Leave Trail Of Blood, Tears by iamchybs(op):
Peace seems to have taken flight for people in Niger State, leaving pain and agony in its place. This has been occasioned by the bestial acts of some persons wielding weapons and masquerading as local vigilantes, who, rather than protect the people against daredevil men of the underworld, have turned a nightmare.

From Minna, the state capital to Kontagora, Suleja, Rijau, Alawa and Banji, it is a tale of woe as residents narrate sordid acts and raw terror unleashed on them by members of various vigilance groups, who maimed or killed citizens over unsubstantiated allegations leveled against persons suspected to have committed a crime.

No fewer than 20 people have been killed in such cloudy circumstances between January and June, this year, according to reports. In each case, the victims were labeled criminals, adjudged guilty and given jungle justice.

Salihu Musa, a 32-year-old commercial motorcyclist, who came out of his home to ease himself about 1.00am one ill-fated night recently in Suleja, Suleja Local Government Area of the state, did not live to tell his story, after he was arrested my members of a vigilance group on suspicion of being a thief. He had taken to his heels on sighting them presuming they were armed robbers; but his plea of innocence after the men chased and caught up with him fell on deaf ears. At dawn, he was no more, brutally tortured to death. Salihu is just one among three victims of extrajudicial killings by vigilantes in Suleja within the past six months.

In Maikunkele, a suburb of Minna, four people were killed by the vigilantes in the area in March alone, among who were two suspected goat thieves. They died from injuries sustained from severe torture by members of the vigilance team. The incident triggered a protest by residents in the neighbourhood which almost turned violent before the situation was brought under control by the police.

However, the violence that erupted in Kontagora over the alleged killing of a 17-year-old boy claimed four lives including two vigilantes during a clash between youths of Angwan Yaman in Kontagora Local Government Area. The office and patrol vehicle of the vigilance group were razed by the irate youths, to avenge the death of the boy said to have been arrested while returning home late during the last Ramadan period, detained and viciously tortured at the vigilance office, which led to his death.

Irked by the incident, the youths mobilized to the vigilance group’s office in protest, where the operatives were said to have fired gunshots sporadically into the air in a bid to disperse them. In the process, a youth was hit and killed by stray bullet, while several others sustained injuries, triggering a violent reaction from the protesting youths.

Also this year, precisely on May 5, members of a vigilante group at Alawa, Rafi Local Government Area, allegedly led by their chairman, Mallam Zakari Alawa, stormed a mosque in the early hours of the morning and whisked away six persons in a prayer session to an unknown destination. They have not been found dead or alive till date, amid reports that rather than handing them over to the police if a crime was committed, they had been extra-judicially murdered in cold blood. The victims included Abubakar Usman (60), Aliyu Usman (57), Buderi Idris (25), Ahmadu Usman (35), Usman Usman, Abubakar Kadir (57) and Ilu Dere (25).

One of the victims, Abubakar Usman, was said to be in possession of a sum of N750, 000, meant for payment of his hajj fare on the day he was whisked away while another, Abubakar Kadiri, had N30, 000 at the time of his arrest by the vigilance men, according to a petition to the Niger State police commissioner by relatives of the victims.

In the petition signed on their behalf by a lawyer, I.A. Adams, a copy of which is in the possession of Sunday Sun, families of the victims alleged that on enquiry about their whereabouts after being whisked away, the leader of the vigilance group, Zakari, claimed they had been handed over to a military formation in the state and demanded a sum of N700, 000 for their release, a claim that was debunked by the military authorities.

Part of the petition reads: “Upon thus findings, our client believed that these people have been killed as usual by the vigilance men and their corpses destroyed for no reason.” The families have threatened to take the laws into their hands by resorting to self-help, to avenge the killing of their relatives if the authorities take no action to ensure justice.

Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent of Police and until recently, spokesman for the Niger State police command, confirmed receipt of the petition and commencement of investigations when contacted on the phone regarding the development. He expressed concern over the activities of local vigilances groups, especially extra-judicial killings, for which he said the command had received several complaints.

PoliticsUN Bodies Denounce Threats To Igbo In Northern Nigeria by iamchybs(op): 11:58am On Aug 29, 2017
Two organs of the United Nations (UN) have denounced an ultimatum issued by members of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum for demanding that Igbo resident in all parts of northern Nigeria vacate the area by October 1, 2017. The two UN bodies also condemned death threats targeting members of Nigeria’s Igbo ethnicity.

On June 6, 2017, the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum issued the ultimatum at a press conference in Kaduna, capital of Kaduna State. Despite calls by Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna for the arrest of those who issued the ultimatum, the police and other security agencies declined to act.

Ohaneze Ndigbo
Last week, the Arewa Youth Forum formally withdrew the ultimatum, with some of its members citing pressure from President Muhammadu Buhari for their soft-pedaling.

However, in a statement released in Geneva, Switzerland on August 25, 2017, the office of the UN Human Rights described the ultimatum to the Igbo to flee the north as a matter of “grave concern.”

The UN experts who issued the report on the plight of the Igbo also voiced concerns over an anti-Igbo hate song and audio message that had gone viral on social media. The hateful message, which is spoken in Hausa, encourages northerners to destroy Igbo property in the north and kill Igbo who fail to leave by October 1. The UN experts said they were “gravely concerned about this proliferation of hate messages and incitement to violence against the Igbo and their property, especially considering the previous history of such violence.”

The experts urged the Nigerian government to “be vigilant, as hate speech and incitement can endanger social cohesion and threaten peace by deepening the existing tensions between Nigeria’s ethnic communities.”

After noting that some local and national officials, as well as media reps, had condemned the ultimatum, the UN experts said they were worried by some officials’ silence. “We are deeply concerned that some prominent local leaders and elders have not condemned the ultimatum, hate speech, and the perpetrators,” said the UN statement. It added: “We call on the Government, media and civil society representatives, and local and religious leaders, to reject and condemn hate speech and incitement to violence unequivocally and in the strongest possible terms.”

The UN also demanded an official investigation of those behind the incitement to violence in order to unmask the perpetrators for prosecution and punishment. According to the UN, those to be identified must include “the people behind the ultimatum and those responsible for the creation, publication, and circulation of the hate song and audio message.”

The UN experts who authored the statement included Mr. Mutuma Ruteere, Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, Mr. Fernand de Varennes, Special Rapporteur on minority issues, and Ms. Anastasia Crickley, Chairperson of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Following the UN experts’ report, the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination held its 93rd session between July 31 and August 25, 2017. Acting under its “Early Warning and Urgent Action Procedure,” the Committee said it was deeply concerned “by the rise of racist hate speech and incitement to violence against the Igbo people, including through the recording and wide distribution of a song and audio message in Hausa language which describe the Igbos in hateful and derogatory terms.” It added that the Committee was “Alarmed by the public ultimatum issued by a number of northern youth groups, forums, and coalitions on 6 June 2017 calling all Igbos in northern Nigeria to leave their homes by 1 October 2017,” noting that the ultimatum “may have been recently withdrawn.”

The Committee decried “reports that other local elders and leaders have endorsed the ultimatum and expressed their support for such racist hate speech targeting and threatening the Igbos,” adding that it was “deeply worried by the information that some Igbo families have already started moving out from their villages and homes in northern Nigeria to avoid any possible harm to their personal integrity.”

The UN body drew attention to Nigeria’s membership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and of the African Union as well as a State party to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights. It stated that Nigeria must “increase its efforts in systematically rejecting and condemning, including by high-level and local public officials and leaders, any form of racist hate speech, incitement to hatred and violence, and the dissemination of ideas of ethnic superiority.”

The UN body recommended that Nigeria “take immediate action to stop and prevent the continued circulation and dissemination of the hateful song and audio message mentioned above,” and “to exercise due diligence to halt, prevent and investigate acts of racist hate speech and incitement to hatred and violence against the Igbo people, in accordance with international human rights standards, with a view to bringing perpetrators to justice, punishing them adequately if convicted, and compensating victims.”

The UN Committee urged Nigeria to “ensure the protection of all its citizens from ethnic hatred, and take effective measures to ensure that Igbo people can fully exercise their rights stipulated in the Convention, including the right to security of person and protection against violence or bodily harm, the right to freedom of movement and residence, and the right to own property.”

It finally called on “all local and national authorities in Nigeria to promptly and firmly address the underlying causes of the ethnic tensions in Nigeria, with a view to avoiding repeated ethnic-based violence, and to promote intercultural dialogue between different ethnic groups based on diversity, respect, and inclusiveness.”

According to the Committee, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights had been mandated “to draw the attention of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union to the human rights situation of the Igbo in northern Nigeria.”

Foreign AffairsNewsnorth Korea Fires Missile Over Japan by iamchybs(op): 7:52am On Aug 29, 2017
North Korea fired a ballistic missile over Japan and into the Pacific Ocean on Monday as it continues with its weapons’ test.

Hide quoted text
The Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe said it was an “unprecedented, serious and grave threat” while calling for an emergency UN Security Council meeting.

The last time a North Korean rocket overflew Japan was in 2009, when Pyongyang said it was satellite launch.

US, South Korea and Japan believed it was a clandestine test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

Last month, North Korea carried out two overt ICBM tests that appeared to bring much of the US mainland within reach for the first time and heightened strains in the region.

US President Donald Trump had at the time issued an apocalyptic warning of raining “fire and fury” on the North, saying Washington’s weapons were “locked and loaded.”

Pyongyang threatened to fire a salvo of missiles over Japan towards the US territory of Guam.

The latest missile was launched at around 2057 GMT Monday from Sunan, near Pyongyang, travelling “over Japan”, the South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

It flew around 2 ,700 kilometres (1 ,700 miles) at a maximum altitude of around 550 kilometres.

Guam is about 3 ,500 kilometres from North Korea — although the missile was fired in an easterly direction and not towards the US outpost, home to 160,000 people and host to major military facilities.

Abe said the overflight was an “outrageous act” that “greatly damages regional peace and security,” telling reporters Tokyo had protested to Pyongyang‎.

You are extremely ignorant about the economic motive of private and public unis.
Contrary to the bold, it is public unis that are profit oriented in Nigeria. You have corrupt VCs and senate approving questionable fees, lecturers too aren't left out with extortion.
On the other hand, private unis are owed by bodies and person who are looking to give back. Oyedepo, Adeboye, Catholic, Dangote etc are people who are passionate about giving back to the society. You don't expect them to subsidize the full cost of running the schools. By the way how much does FG spend on the public uni graduate per annum per graduate?
No matter how much u spend in a public university per session, u can't compare it with a private university na... Even if na Mother Theresa university.
