Science/Technology › Ghana Scientist Wins Supportfor Plan To Turn Human Wasteinto Fertilizer by iamord(op): 11:45am On Jul 08, 2014
[ACCRA] A Nigerian scientist based in
Ghana is one of four researchers from
developing countries who received US
$100,000 each to pursue their dream
ideas for solving global health problems.
Olufunke Cofie, a soil scientist at the
Consultative Group on International
Agricultural Research's Challenge
Program on Water and Food will develop
fertiliser pellets from treated human
waste to boost agricultural productivity
and improve sanitation.
She is one of the latest 88 winners in the
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Grand
Challenges in Global Health programme,
funded through the Grand Challenges
Explorations (GCE) initiative, which
include scientists from Ecuador, Ghana,
Kenya and the Philippines.
"Recycling readily available excrement
has the potential to both reduce the
environmental pollution burden and
prolong the lifespan of [waste]
treatment plants, while also significantly
improving soil productivity," Cofie told
SciDev.Net.
Cofie will explore using faecal sludge as
a source of organic matter and nutrients.
She will also address the negative
perception in some communities of using
human excrement in agriculture.
Since 2000, Cofie has been leading
collaborative projects on turning faecal
sludge and urban waste into something
useful.
"The award is encouraging in the sense
that we can go one step further in the
research process [to create pellets]. It is
not an end itself but we can surely add
value to what we have been doing," she
said.
Since its launch in 2008, the GCE
initiative has awarded grants of US
$100,000 to nearly 500 researchers from
more than 40 countries. Successful
projects can apply for a grant of up to US
$1 million.
"We believe that truly transformative
technologies are needed to overcome
the most persistent health and
development challenges," said Chris
Wilson, director of the Gates
Foundation's Global Health Discovery
programme.
"If ideas like the one presented by
Olufunke Cofie can show proof of
concept in making sanitation services
truly safe and sustainable, the
implication is that they can help reduce
the burden of diarrhoeal disease by 20–
40 per cent, and save the lives of
millions of children," he told SciDev.Net.
The initiative has specifically targeted
developing countries, he said.
Four scientists from developing countries
are among the 88 winners, along with
one from Brazil, one from India and two
from China.

JuanDeDios: How HOAX Mermaid 'mockumentary' gave Animal Planet its biggest audience EVER
By RACHEL QUIGLEY

It reeled in the network's biggest audience in its 17-year history and caused an immediate Twitter frenzy that is still trending today.

But Animal Planet's Sunday 'documentary' about the existence of mermaids was nothing but a hoax, it emerged today, a revelation that will likely disappoint the show's record 3.6 million viewers.

'Mermaids: The New Evidence' was advertised as a follow-up to last year's 'Mermaids: The Body Found', with biologist Dr Paul Robertson returning with what appeared to be brand new footage of the alleged mythical creatures, allegedly taken this spring in the Greenland Sea.

ghostofsparta: You have spoken the truth about the hazard of conducting this kind of educative test for all to know. I myself have heard of some reports on popular Yoruba talk-show program (Bond FM & Radio Lagos), there was an incident of a well known Onisegun in the village who was contacted by agents of Police to prove his series of anti-bullet YAS that was well spoken of, the elderly man who was brought to the radio program said on that appointed day of test, he was surprised to suddenly see so many Police emerging from everywhere who before rounding him and his apprentice up, was shot several times before been taking away on the charges that he colludes with armed robbers by supplying them ammunitions to rob. He constantly kept telling the host of the radio show in Yoruba that if not for 'ayimoye ajesara' (many internalized APB versions) he would have been killed that day as that was the intent of the set up. You see, that's the kind of country we find ourselves.

ghostofsparta: As a scientific researcher in the study of whatever mechanics various Yoruba Advanced Science eka juju functions...I have come to understand a lot which is just measly 0.5% of all the whole thing. Don't misconstrue me as I am not saying I am a dibia or a certified Babalawo or Onisegun...... I am a passionate pan africanist who has immense interest in the scientific approach our ancient ancestors took to achieve numerous tasks some of which would be deemed irrationaly unscientific in the purview of modern science.

That been said, I can say there are two forms of every given juju aka Youba Advanced Science...I call it

1. Tangible form: A physicallized configuration of an 'energized matter' usually in a belt-form (onde), arm-tie (ifunpa) etc. These types are what some erroneously referred to as juju which should not be so since it is french rendition of woo-woo i.e. Mumbo jumbo.
2. Non-tangible form: A internalized delivery of 'energized matter' mostly in the form of specific powdery-like compounds contactivated with esoteric utterances. Internalization may refer to ingestion of special potions, incision of a specific number of marks to a particular area of the body rubbed with an 'energized matter' and lastly exposure of the reciepient to forces awakened to be super-active at a particular time of the day or season. The non-tangible form often requires specific rites to be made during it process. Most importantly is that either form 1 or 2, they most of the time has consequences, conditions and repercussions if ceertain warnings or taboos have been violated.

That man that got shot and died probably just did a version of NTF which requires its user not to defy it by unnecessarily putting it to test. These sciences on anti-bullets are so numerous that modern science would exhaust if it dares attempts to rationalize how it works. I'm saying this because it is only one version out of many that I have been able to propose a scientific hypothesis to its manner of operation.
nice write up.. Pls open a nrew thread and throw more light on this I believe that we r suppose to use our spiritual knowledge for technological advancement..with that..we might even develop more innovative bullet proofs than the white man.. This is a new age..black man has to shift from the old way of thinking else he will get lostt in time

ghostofsparta: Before I read this topic I need to say this

There will always be African Science Test failure greasing Nairaland frontpage but no Nigeria forum and media would ever laud or inform the world of any successful African Science test eka 'juju' that worked. All of you have been brainwashed to regard all things pertaining to the ways of our ancestral belief system including its advanced knowledge of mastery of the natural world as reproachable.

Shame on you all, except for macof, pagan9ja, folykaze, funtaherb and others

CityNG: A professional lifeguard dies this weekend in California, he knew how to swim and died trying to rescue someone. So the ability to swim alone is not a decision factor.

On a jet ski you are required to wear a life jacket as well as tie the ignition lanyard around your wrist. The life jacket will keep you afloat indefinitely until either rescue arrives or you make it to your now dead in the water since the ignition turned off due to the lanyard.

I don't think I've ever been out on my jet ski without going into the water due to stunt riding, but every single time I flip it back up and continue riding.

Moral of this post is to encourage people to pursue their hobbies but to practice safety first.

50calibre: Nah! What I said is just beyond your scope because you're too stup*d. Self preservation is an alien concept to simpletons like you because you have nothing to live for, your life is worth nothing to anyone. You could die today & no one will bat an eye.

The fact death can meet you in your house is not a Carte Blanche to go out and wilfully indulge in activities that could endanger your life in any form for no good reason. You should seek to better your odds of survival not worsen it. Thrill seekers like you with no regard for their safety are usually nonentities.

There's nothing innovatory about indulging in dangerous activities for the fun of it, stop confusing yourself. Jumping off a cliff or swimming in shark infested waters for fun & going into space or the moon are not the same thing, stop being a fo*l, & just shut up so you can learn.

If someone had told Castro not to ski, he'd probably be alive today.

I've seem some who had juju to prevent metals/bottles from penetrating their skin. After few punches of bottles, stabs or slashes of the knife/cutlass, the spot beings to swell with black mark but eventually gives way.
