redcliff: You seem to be living in your memory/dream lane here and have completely lost touch with reality and the actual state of affairs in the Nigerian state. Have you been to our public schools to see the nature & the status of our libraries? If yes, you would appreciate this young man, who has done this much in pulling resources together from project sponsors and leaving behind for his PPA, a library as this. If in your opinion, you stated that "this building is not worth calling a library," what then were your legacies during your service year? 2 Likes |

redcliff: I think these days corps members are doing this for competition. Everybody wants to build something not considering building standards. This building looks very substandard. Why is it difficult for people of your likes to recognise and appreciate good deeds for once? The dude is a corps member for crying out loud, he is neither the GMD of NNPC nor the CBN Governor. You expect him to build an entire school complex or the like of tha National Library Complex before you would learn the act of showing appreciation |

laudate: Hi, put the cylinder far away from your cooker when it is being used, and please ensure that your kitchen is well ventilated always (i.e. windows are always open). You can also install a small gas detector in your kitchen which can detect gas leaks, and give off an alarm if gas escapes from the cylinder or cooker. Thanks for the advice. |

NYSC / Re: My Experience With A Corper In Abuja by iamtheprincipal: 8:12pm On Jul 29, 2014 |
This is not the first time. There are lots of them everywhere. A friend told me of an encounter he had the other day. There was this guy that goes from Church to Church in Portharcourt. On this faithful Sunday, after 1st Service at RCCG-JESUS' House Portharcourt, the dude approached him on the ground that he is a graduate and was just called up for a job interview at ONNE and that he was in dire need of #2500 to take him to ONNE, my friend offered him #500 but the guy turned it down, that it wasn't enough, he had to make it up to #1000 for the guy. This prompted his desire to watch the dude closely. So, he went aside to monitor him. The guy continued his game plan and other Church members heard his story and gave him their widow's mind. The guy went on to collect more than #15,000 and he wasn't still satisfied. My friend approached him requesting for the return of his #1000 or else he would call the attention of the team of Mobile Police Men standing by the Church, the guy hurriedly returned my friend's money and told him that he has spoilt business for him on that day. This is a warning to everyone. Be very careful on how you offer assistance to strangers as some of them are criminals. Be vigilant! 7 Likes |

Politics / Re: Exploration Of Crude Oil First Started In Oloibiri, Owerri Or Around Ondo State? by iamtheprincipal: 2:33am On Jul 25, 2014 |
OrlandoOwoh: Please, if you know, with related links, let us know. This discourse is academic. I decided to post this because of its academic relevance. (from Anthony, 2005; Fadojutimi, 2012). The advent of the oil industry can be traced back to 1908, when a German Company, the Nigerian Bitumen Corporation, commenced exploration activities in Araromi area near Okitipupa in the present Ondo State, West of Nigeria. The search was not successful because oil was not found in commercial quantity. These pioneering efforts ended abruptly with the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. The search for oil in Nigeria was rejuvenated in 1937, with the establishment of the Shell D'Arcy (the forerunner of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria) an affiliate of the mineral oil companies of Shell Petroleum Company and British Petroleum Company. Their activities were also interrupted by the Second World War, but resumed 1947. In November 1938 Shell-BP was awarded the sole concessionary rights covering the whole territory of Nigeria. Shell Overseas Exploration Co and Darcy Exploration Co were given license to jointly explore for oil throughout Nigeria by the British colonial government. After a five year interruption caused by the Second World War, Shell-BP intensified its exploration activities during the 1946-1951 period. previous size. In 1951 Shell-BP drilled its First Exploration well drilled near Owerri but it came up dry. During the next four years the company concentrated efforts in the areas around the Niger Delta in the southern part of Nigeria without discovering well that could produce oil. With continuous effort in the search for oil in these areas for few more years, Shell-BP discovered oil in commercial quantity in Oloibiri, in the Eastern Niger Delta, in the present day Bayelsa State in 1956. Following the discovery by Shell D’Arcy Petroleum, pioneer production began in 1958. Towards the end of 1956 another discovery was made at Afam. This discovery, opened up the Oil industry in 1961. Four additional foreign companies ( Mobil, Chevron, Texaco and Elf) started operations in Nigeria. (the first off-shore licenses were also awarded at this time). |

Politics / A Foreigner’s Thoughts On Nigeria! by iamtheprincipal: 1:09am On Jul 25, 2014 |
Nicholas Rolley, a Ph.D student of the University of California in Berkley, United States(U.S), is in Nigeria to research into West African languages at the University of Ibadan (UI). He shares his views about the country with STANLEY IBEKU. It is his second visit to Nigeria – Africa’s most populous nation. Nicholas Rolley, a doctoral research student from the University of California in Berkley, United States (U.S), first visited in 2009 when he came for a research into Ishan Language of Edo State at the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, University of Ibadan (UI). His stay was boring and basically spent on research work. If his first visit was boring, Rolley fell in love with African languages in his second visit. He is undertaking a special research on dialects in West Africa, especially on syntax and phonology. He came at the instance of Prof Francis Egbokhare whose research interest is similar to Nicholas’. Did he just find love in Africa? Nicholas said: “I became very interested in West African languages during my first degree programme at the University of Toronto, where I took a course called Field Methods. It was a course in which all linguistic students basically dissect a language from the basics and study the language without being a native speaker.” Since then, his interest in African languages started to grow. According to him, Nigeria is a linguistic goldmine because of its vast number of different cultures, languages and people. He said negative stories about Nigeria may have prevented foreign researchers from exploring the country’s goldmine. He said: “It is incredible the number of linguistic and cultural wealth that found in Nigeria. There is so much to be done and I think it is the negative stories and perceptions which hold researchers back. In the 1970s, there were so many foreigners who came to Ibadan not just to study but to live here. They also studied there. My supervisor was a visiting scholar to the University of Ibadan. There were people that did their research on Igala, Kalabari, Itsekiri, Hausa and Kanuri. But right now, because of security and power situation, there are fewer people coming here.” Rolley said it won’t be fair to compare Nigeria with the US in terms of the teaching facilities, noting that Nigeria’s status as a developing country should not be an excuse for the poor conditions of the facilities in higher institutions. On what he perceived about Nigeria, he said: “There is lots of news about the country, which are mostly negative. There are amazing people; there are also terrible people just like in America. But there is a thin line between anthropology and stereotyping. Generally, Nigerians are highly social. The country has cultures reflected in the linguistic diversity.” Rolley said his research work is mainly for the academommunity and for the promotion and preservation of Ishan language. Worried by the state of Nigerian universities, the foreign student urged the government to set its priority. “The most important thing in my mind is where the priority should be. Where specific Nigerian interest should be and also what students should pay more attention to. Electricity is still the problem in Nigeria but universities are in the business of developing knowledge and impacting it. It does not create wealth. Because universities are knowledge centres, it is important that we develop knowledge and use it to solve societal challenges,” he said. He wants Nigerians abroad to come back and use their expertise to develop the country while also advocating for more exchange programmes. He said: “It is good for Nigerians professionals to go abroad but they must return to their country to set the pace for its development. They must discourage brain drain. We should have ambitious, brilliant and smart Nigerians coming back to the country to help. Despite reports of kidnapping and terrorism, Rolley said he could settle in Nigeria but that has to be subject to his wife’s consent. He quipped: “I don’t know if my wife would want it because of kidnapping, armed robbery and Boko Haram challenges. Personally, these problems don’t worry me. My worry is the state of roads. Every time I am on the roads, I always hope to return back to my base alive. Now, I understand why Nigeria is very religious; why people pray to God 10 times a day. The roads are terrible. That, to me, will be one of the things pulling me back; that fear that I will be on the road and may never come back alive is always in the mind.” According to him, Nigeria is a country America should pay attention to. “It has cities bigger than anyone dreamt of. Some Americans don’t even understand that Nigeria is highly urbanised. They think Africa is a bush. They don’t understand ‘everyday Lagos’. They don’t understand traffic jams which involve 10,000 vehicles. They don’t understand how urban Nigeria is becoming and many other African cities and countries,” he said.

Education / Re: Bsc And B.tech: Compare And Contrast by iamtheprincipal: 5:36am On Jul 24, 2014 |
B. Tech is indeed higher than BSc. in terms of ranking & as a point of correction, besides Federal Universities of Technologies that award B.Tech Degrees, conventional Universities like Uniport, et al also award B.Tech Degrees in certain departments but would require the taking up of more courses and sometimes, an additional year is added to the BSc. programme courses in other to meet up with the requirements for the award of B.Tech Degrees. Though, in this part of the world, whether a candidate possesses a B.Tech or a BSc. Degree is often neglected during job selection process... 1 Like |
