To those saying she must have deserved the beating, and not condemning the violence, I hope when you see the story of a woman pouring hot oil/water, using a knife to cut off a husband's joystick /stabbing him, using a pestle to rearrange his destiny / putting poison in his meal etc you will also say he deserved it, and not condemn the act of violence.

I wonder how you expect a sane society to function if violence against anyone is supported and not put in check.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying, but getting violent on anyone should be a no-no, talkless of someone close to you.. Everyone is annoying in a marriage. Is it in terms of infidelity? Saying hurtful things to one's spouse ( Thats not only a woman's thing, I've seen a lot of cases where a man will say something so hurtful the woman will feel like committing suicide), spending money meant for the home/children on frivolous things like parties, clothes, girlfriends etc.
That doesn't mean we should endorse any form of violence. It's first and foremost against the law, even if you don't believe in humanity.
It's criminal and should never be endorsed.
I hope law enforcement will take it up anyway, since the victim has come out and complained of a crime carried out against her person.
I never endorsed this shameful action in anyway. You may read my previous posts.

No one is perfect and our characters are flawed. A little understanding and forbearing one another can help avoid this kind of sad tale.

Someone must lead with love and the other must submit to his leading. When both husband and wife want to lead, there is no follower, no direction, anarchy is the result. Each must know his role and limits. I still maintain that mutual love and respect will always win the day.

Many bring their pride into Marriage. If both husband and wife will learn humility, learn how to say sorry/thank you..... Simple stuff like that can avert big quarrels like this.

I still don't support any form of physical abuse. No No

Keep pulling up facts from thin air. Co.pareing apples and oranges seems to be your thing. It is not mine.

1. Domestic abuse has always been the norm not the exception until the past few years. Respect or not, your grandmother or greatgrndmother was battered by your grandfather or great-grandfather. Go ask around. It was part of life for them, it would be unusual for a woman to complain about abuse unless it was the extreme kind. So yes, women respected their husbands and they still got the cane in return.

2. You cannot compare the cockroach population to that of today. The population has grown tremendously. I don't think I need to expantiate.

3. We didn't have much divorce primarily because of the backlash from the society. Nowadays, people can't be bothered. They have aspirations and there is no way in hell society is going to stop it. Given what these women went through, most of your old respectful women would choose divorce if they had the choice. You need to hear then when they lament and it is that same mouth that they will use to insult women who choose not to suffer like they did.

Basically, you cannot tell me life then was better for women because they respected (whatever your meant by respect) their husbands. You know nothing about them or their lives. You have chosen the narrative that even your father and grandfather would disagree with. I didn't choose mine, I heard and read mine from people who would tell you to your face that there is no way a man won't beat his wife. You read that right.
Keep denying the fact.
You can bury your head in the sand all you want.

Since you will not listen to sound advice, you can do the below:
Be rude and disrespectful to your husband. Be impatient and unloving to your wife.
That will give you a very settled home.

Your marriage your business

Actually, if you could read you will see that your question is very defective and I have given you reasons why it is.

I have already asked you to talk to your grandparents.
Case closed since you can't answer the question.
There is nothing defective here.

Contemporary Studies have shown that domestic violence and divorce have increased tremendously over the last few generations.

Do you ever Ponder on what could be responsible for this worrisome trend?

It is lack of respect for the marriage institution.
Men and women think they can marry and then live in the marriage independently like singles, completely unaccountable to each other.

Unless men and women change their orientation, we have not seen anything yet!

Have mutual love and respect and know your place and limit as a husband /wife. The man is the head and is wired to lead. The wife is the homemaker and brings sweetness into the marriage.

If each party plays their role well there will be peace

Marriage isn't to be ENDURED. No one is contesting every other thing with you, stop unnecessary deflections.
Point taken.

When your husband/wife develops any habit you don't like, don't endure or put up with it. Just jump right out of the marriage because marriage is supposed to be enjoyed only.

BTW I forgot....you are perfect and he/she will not need to put up with any character flaw in you!

I don't believe in all these love, respect and other terms people throw about. I don't know a woman that doesn't want to be respected nor do I see a man that does not want to be loved. Submission is a word that is too big to comprehend in this scenario. Either partner can be more flexible than the other. So can we stop making it sound like men cannot be flexible and women cannot compromise unless they see it as a duty? It is an insult on both sexes.

How about we treat our spouses as humans who have feelings like we do?
Good question
Being flexible has nothing to do with your original role in marriage. Anybody and everybody is expected to be flexible. A man and a woman are wired differently so yes love and respect will always win

Unfortunately marriage is not designed to work the way you stated above. Your husband/wife is different from your colleagues at work(people you merely treat nicely as humans) . If you follow the original design you will get a good home. If you decide to alter it, you can't get thesame result.

However you can experiment with your idea

Marriage isn't to be endured. Marriage should be enjoyed
Bring the women of the old to this generation, empower them _and a very tiny percentage of them would be willing to endure.

Mutual respect and love is paramount in marriage. You don't need any older person , holy book or religious leader to tell you. Any normal person with a working conscience knows this.
People can decieve you that marriage is not to be endured. Let me tell you the bitter truth their are some character /traits in your husband/wife that you cannot change overnight (excluding beating of course)

You will have to put up with it until you learn to adjust or your partner finally gets over it.

Marriage is not a bed of roses. And enjoyment doesn't mean everything is exactly the way you read it in novels.

My dear brace up for reality if you want to stay married . There will be challenges... But the beauty is when both of you can stay and weather it together then it becomes a sweet story to tell the young ones when you are old.

Problem is most people can't endure and they opt for the easy way out.

Divorce is very easy. Building a marriage that lasts is hard work. Don't be deceived

It is alright for a man who contributes more to throw verbal abuse but it is not right for a woman to throw verbal abuse if she is contributing more.

It is alright for a man who is contributing more to throw verbal abuse but some betide the woman for exchanging words with him
If you look at it through the prism of financial contribution you are bound to get it wrong.

No matter who contributes or has more money, the basic principles of love, patience (man) and respect, submission (woman) will always win the day if husband and wife see themselves as one.

I know female politicians who are richer and far more influential than their husbands but they still play their role as wife. I equally know men who are richer and more influential than their wives and that shouldn't oveebloat their ego to think they can misbehave.

Money is dicey. Go for the basic principles and life is simple.

Longevity of old marriages doesn't equal marital bliss smiley.
Marital bliss is a subjective topic.
What you consider bliss is totally different from others.

Did their marriages endure? Yes by far

What about this generation that is looking for bliss? Divorce and beating daily. Children from broken homes becoming wayward. Baby daddy and baby mama everywhere. Lost family values...

In marriage you can't have it all. No man or woman is a perfect mate so if you are looking for perfect bliss you better stay single.

Longevity of the marriage depends on ability of both parties to adjust and keep learning and that is what our grand parents understood better than this generation.

Rigidity of opinion and constantly wanting to have ones way is what leads to irreconcilable differences that ends in divorce or domestic violence.

So back to my original submission.
Wives respect and honour your husbands. Husbands love and be patient with your wives. And in between both should leave a margin for error and adjust accordingly.

Why is it that almost all Nigerian men like beating and maltreating their women? I seriously don't understand! Is this a curse of something? Why can't they learn from their Ghanaian counterpart.
You might also want to advice the Nigerian women to be as submissive as their Ghanaian counterpart.

You can't have it both ways.
Submission and respect brings out love from a man naturally. A woman who is proud and disrespectful cannot get the best from her husband.

By the way beating from any of the parties is a no no

Men don't push their wives to the wall?

Are you lots married?

You think men just watch when their wives insult them? Hehehe.
Only unmarried people would think husbands are that innocent.

The married men themselves know they are very annoying.
Exactly
So when discussing marriage the basic principles must be followed or it will always end in sad news like this one. Cheers

Men and women should learn from older couples who have enjoyed a blissful married life perhaps one can learn one or two lessons

This is 2017, maybe you've forgotten. You may need to go marry your grandmother's mate.
Marriage is an institution and the basic concept of submission and love can never change if you want the marriage to work.

Don't you wonder why it was so rare to hear that any of those grandfathers beat or divorced their wife?

Respect and love are two forces that keep a marriage in equilibrium.
As a woman learn how to respect your husband. As a husband learn how to love and be patient with your wife. If men and women follow this principle we will not be reading this kind of sad stories.

God help our society to build homes that will endure

very industrious, very innovative and very articulate people. The economic development of this country owes much to their contribution. I don’t like the way they have been treated since 1970. They still bear the scars of the Biafran crisis, and they are still being treated as if the civil war is still nascent, which is wrong.

"...They have been kept out of the security forces of this country at the strategic levels,
the law enforcement of this country at the most strategic levels, they are ignored, despised by the cabal. Even in the civil service, I do not know how many permanent secretaries are Igbo. I am not sure how many senior police officers are Igbo, and same goes for the Navy, Air Force, and the Army. They are one of the largest groups in this country. In fact, it is a nation within a nation. The major manpower pool of this country is being supplied by the Igbo. I was so angry when Abacha came to establish the Provisional Ruling Council (PRC) and the Igbo were not represented; I went to court to fight the cause of the Igbo.

It was after my suit in court, challenging Abacha and asking that PRC
composition be set aside by the court until Igbo were given their rightful

Being Born Again is the best thing that can ever happen to you my brother. It simply means forsaking the old life of sin and embracing a new life in Christ: a life of holiness and uprightness. What is wrong in being holy?

However you can be born again and still need counseling. Only God is all knowing. My advice to born again sisters who are yet to be married due to their un-reasonable standard is that they should seek for counseling in the Bible and from men of God.

We are saved by grace not by Works. Do not create a standard that only angels can meet.
