Jesus did instruct us to sell what we have and give alms. He first told the young rich ruler to do it. And he also said it in generic terms:

32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.

The early church did it on two recorded occasions

Concerning the overflowing measure I mentioned, you are right we don't have to wait for it. I agree with you on this. I just said it to at least let churches already enjoying overflowing financial grace try and reach out to the poor.

But the tithe system is good for the church. It's not a burdensome sacrifice. So many give much more than that. Only those who are not actively involved in the work of the ministry condemn tithing.

Pastors who preach against it run their churches without structures that requires to employ staff to be paid.

Yes, I do know money had always been there. But where did they get their money from. It was majorly from their farming and cattle rearing from which they give their tithes.

When the Bible was talking about the wealth of Job, it was according to the numbers of these animals he had.

What was in the mind of God when he told the Jews to give a tenth of their increase? It was for the Levites welfare.

God is concerned about those who serve in his vineyard. There are many workers also who work full time in the vineyard of God today. Do you think God cares less about them. So, if there are no farmers, they should starve to death working for God. I know you will say God can sustain his workers. Why didn't he tell the Levites to expect manner from heaven?

So, it's common sense if you love God to commit at least 10% to support the workers in the house of God.

But when the church has reached an overflowing measure in the amount of tithes they receive, they should give back to help the widow, orphans, fatherless and the poor in their midst. This is just my area of concern.

If you don't want to tithe because it wasn't emphasized by Jesus, then practice what Jesus instructed - Sell all that you have and give to the poor- Luke 12:33. This is giving away your 100%. Please start doing that if you truly want to walk in the light of the teachings of our Lord Jesus.

Why did God asked the Jews to pay tithes to the Levites? Because they work full-time in the house of God. Don't you know that there are also full-time workers today in the house of God making the church to run smoothly and achieve better results? Most of them are professionals. They are even more busy than most company workers. Some of them work till very late in the night and they deserve to be paid good salaries.

They didn't need to pay tithes from their monies because they already paid it after the harvest of their crops. They only converted the remaining to money.

Crops and animals was the real value of wealth those days.

So, we should at least start from the least requirement and step up over time. God loves a generous and cheerful givers. But I must say here that the administration of money received through tithe is faulty. The G Os spends most of it on himself while staffs working with them are poorly paid.

Besides, most of these churches don't reach out to the poor, fatherless, orphans and widows. This is what I mean by the administration of tithe received.

Jesus collects 100%. He said we should sell all that we have and give alms. So, the one who gives such instruction could not be condemning tithe.

What we should focus on is the administration and not the collection.

Our Lord Jesus knew the Jews were already practicing tithing meticulously and he encouraged them to continue. He only focused on what they weren’t doing - judgment, mercy and faith. Hence, he said:

23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for YE PAY TITHE OF MINT AND ANISE AND CUMMINS, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: THESE OUGHT YE TO HAVE DONE, and not to leave the other undone

He acknowledged that they pay tithes and he didn't ask them to stop. He even said that they ought to pay it but not neglect other more important things.

The mercy here stands for helping the poor. And he asked them to sell their possessions to help the poor. This commitment is far more than tithing. It's like giving 100% of what you have.

So, how did Jesus not teach about tithing? His teachings on giving places far greater demand on us.
