Politics / Nigeria Police Denies Dss’s Claim Of Arrest Of RADIO BIAFRA Engineer (picture) by ibadantiti(f): 12:19pm On Jul 24, 2015
Enugu—THERE is confusion in Enugu State following the claim by the National Broadcasting Commission [NBC] that it had successfully blocked Radio Biafra from operating and consequent seizure of its transmission equipment in some parts of South-East zone as well as some arrests made, Vanguard Reports

Although police authorities in Enugu State claimed ignorance of any arrest, it was reliably gathered that an engineer working for the station based in Enugu had been picked up by men of the Department of State Security DSS and taken to Abuja.

Residents in the State are however confused because some of the ardent listeners to the station claimed that the station was still operating

State police command’s spokesman Mr. Ebere Amaraizu told our reporter last night “I am not aware of the arrest and parading of the Radio Biafra suspects. Not to my knowledge”, he stated.

NBC’s Director General, Emeka Mba had said in Abuja last week that “we are working with security operatives, the Commission has also tracked down, neutralized and confiscated transmitter equipment from several locations in the region.

Politics / ‪historyclass‬: Who Sold (what Became) Nigeria To The British For £865k In 1899? by ibadantiti(f): 6:40pm On Jul 22, 2015
Today we will be discussing the first oil war, which was fought in the 19th century, in the area that became Nigeria.

All through the 19th century, palm oil was highly sought-after by the British, for use as an industrial lubricant for machinery. Remember that Britain was the world’s first industrialised nation, so they needed resources such as palm oil to maintain that.

Palm oil of course, is a tropical plant, which is native to the Niger Delta. Malaysia’s dominance came a century later.

By 1870, palm oil had replaced slaves as the main export of the Niger Delta, the area which was once known as the Slave Coast. At first, most of the trade in the oil palm was uncoordinated, with natives selling to those who gave them the best deals. Native chiefs such as former slave, Jaja of Opobo became immensely wealthy because of oil palm. With wealth comes influence.

However, among the Europeans, there was competition for who would get preferential access to the lucrative oil palm trade. In 1879, George Goldie (1846 – 1925, pictured below) formed the United African Company, which was modeled on the former East India Company. Goldie effectively took control of the Lower Niger River. By 1884, his company had 30 trading posts along the Lower Niger. This monopoly gave the British a strong hand against the French and Germans in the 1884 Berlin Conference. The British got the area that the UAC operated in, included in their sphere of influence after the Berlin Conference.

When the Brits got the terms they wanted from other Europeans, they began to deal with the African chiefs. Within two years of 1886, Goldie had signed treaties with tribal chiefs along the Benue and Niger Rivers whilst also penetrating inland. This move inland was against the spirit of verbal agreements that had been made to restrict the organisation’s activities to coastal regions.

By 1886, the company name changed to “The National Africa Company” and was granted a royal charter (incorporated). The charter authorized the company to administer the Niger Delta and all lands around the banks of the Benue and Niger Rivers. Soon after, the company was again renamed. The new name was “Royal Niger Company”, which survives, as Unilever, till this day.

To local chiefs, the Royal Niger Company negotiators had pledged free trade in the region. Behind, they entered private contracts on their terms. Because the (deceitful) private contracts were often written in English and signed by the local chiefs, the British government enforced them. So for example, Jaja of Opobo, when he tried to export palm oil on his own, was forced into exile for “obstructing commerce”. As an aside, Jaja was “forgiven” in 1891 and allowed to return home, but he died on the way back, poisoned with a cup of tea.

Seeing what happened to Jaja, some other native rulers began to look more closely at the deals they were getting from the the Royal Nigeria Company. One of such kingdoms was Nembe, who’s king, Koko Mingi VIII, ascended the throne in 1889 after being a Christian schoolteacher. Koko Mingi VIII, King Koko for short, and like most rulers in the yard, was faced with the Royal Nigeria Company encroachment. He also resented the monopoly enjoyed by the the Royal Nigeria Company, and tried to seek out favourable trading terms, with particularly the Germans in Kamerun.

By 1894 the the Royal Nigeria Company increasingly dictated whom the natives could trade with, and denied them direct access to their former markets.

In late 1894, King Koko renounced Christianity, and tried to form an alliance with Bonny and Okpoma against the the Royal Nigeria Company to take back the trade. This is significant because while Okpoma joined up, Bonny refused. A harbinger of the successful “divide and rule” tactic.

On 29 January 1895, King Koko led an attack on the Royal Niger Company’s headquarters, which was in Akassa in today’s Bayelsa state. The pre-dawn raid had more than a thousand men involved. King Koko’s attack succeeded in capturing the base. Losing 40 of his men, King Koko captured 60 white men as hostages, as well as a lot of goods, ammunition and a Maxim gun. Koko then attempted to negotiate a release of the hostages in exchange for being allowed to chose his trading partners. The British refused to negotiate with Koko, and he had forty of the hostages killed. A British report claimed that the Nembe people ate them. On 20 February 1895, Britain’s Royal Navy, under Admiral Beford attacked Brass, and burned it to the ground. Many Nembe people died and smallpox finished off a lot of others.

By April 1895, business had returned to “normal”, normal being the conditions that the British wanted, and King Koko was on the run. Brass was fined £500 by the British, £26,825 in today’s money, and the looted weapons were returned as well as the surviving prisoners. After a British Parliamentary Commission sat, King Koko was offered terms of settlement by the British, which he rejected and disappeared. The British promptly declared him an outlaw and offered a reward of £200 (£10,730 today) for him. He committed suicide in exile in 1898.

About that time, another “recalcitrant King”, the Oba of Benin, was run out of town. The pacification of the Lower Niger was well and truly under way.

The immediate effect of the Brass Oil War was that public opinion in Britain turned against the the Royal Nigeria Company, so its charter was revoked in 1899. Following the revoking of its charter, the the Royal Niger Company sold its holdings to the British government for £865,000 (£46,407,250 today). That amount, £46,407,250 (NGN12,550,427,783.81 at today’s exchange rate) was effectively the price Britain paid, to buy the territory which was to become known as Nigeria.

Nigerian friends notice that Obama teams are prepared and have some one taking notes, minutes or simply recording and documenting the meeting between that of USA and Nigeria.
President Buhari and his 32 man delegates were not prepared for such meeting, therefore they haven't documented or even taken notes for further reference and to bring back to Nigeria a proper accounts of the meeting between both countries.
It's highly impossibles for them to remember every words, suggestions, ideas and other important information during that meeting.

Politics / Boko Harm Attacks Buhari’s Village (discretion adviced) (picture) !! by ibadantiti(f): 11:38am On Jul 22, 2015
cry

Barely 24 hours after the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Major General Tukur Buratai, vowed to subdue Boko Haram in the Nort-East, the insurgents have attacked his village.

The insurgents were said to have carried out the attack on Monday night, few hours after the army chief left Yobe State, where he had been since he assumed office.

The attack, Daily Sun gathered, left no fewer than two people, including the suicide bomber dead and several others injured.

The militants were also said to have burnt down 30 houses and destroyed property worth millions of niara before leaving the village.

Military sources told Daily Sun yesterday night in Abuja that the insurgents also planted some Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) along the Mirinda Express Road.

Contacted, the acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Usman, said: “I am not aware. I just read about it on one of the online papers.

“It is not true because I have not received a situation report.”

He, however, promised to get back to the media if the attack on the hometown of the COAS was confirmed.

The army chief had, on Sunday, vowed to battle and subdue the insurgents in the North-East, assuring that they would no longer derail the wheel of peace in the zone and the entire country.

This is the second time the insurgents would attack the hometown of the new army chief.

Recall that the village was attacked sometime last year, during which his private residence was destroyed and one of the soldiers on duty in his house killed.

sad The American flags have already been hoisted at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), roads beautified, street families swept off the streets and the media has speculated about every detail of his trip sending the whole country into “Obamamania”.

However, when US President Barack Obama touches down at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) this week on a historic trip to his father’s homeland, he will be carrying a heavy burden of expectations on his shoulders.

Although the purpose of his visit will be to host the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, an invite-only affair for 3,000 delegates at the KICC, politicians, industry leaders have already created a wish list on what they expect the visit from “their son” will achieve.

ELECTORAL REFORMS

The opposition is thought to be setting ground on corruption in government and electoral reforms as some of the things they expect the American president to address.

On Friday Cord Principal Raila Odinga made a fresh push to have Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairman Issack Hassan step aside over graft allegations saying they were being shielded. Similar to the opposition, a section of the civil society also wants President Obama to pressure the government to deal with graft.

Politics / Yoruba Traditional Leader The Ooni Of Ife, Okunade Sijuade Blast Buhari Pix by ibadantiti(f): 1:57pm On Jul 17, 2015
1. (C) Summary: In a February 5 meeting with the Consul General, Yoruba traditional leader the Ooni of Ife, Okunade Sijuade, suggested presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari was a religious "fanatic" who would sow discord if elected. PDP candidate Umaru Yar'Adua, on the other hand, would maintain stability and had Sijuade's support. Sijuade and Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode agreed Vice President Atiku Abubakar should be arrested on charges of corruption. This would prevent Atiku from destabilizing a Yar'Adua presidency, they declared. End summary. ------------------------------------- Stability Requires Northern President ------------------------------------- 2. (C) In a February 5 meeting with the Consul General, Yoruba traditional leader the Ooni of Ife described the origins of a presidential power-sharing arrangement designed to maintain the delicate balance among Nigeria's ethnic groups and geographic regions. As a result of a series of meetings between 1993 and 1998, traditional rulers such as the Ooni were instrumental in helping forge the decision that the presidency must go to a Yoruba from the southwest. This was to compensate for the annulment of Moshood Abiola's putative electoral victory in 1993. The proviso to this arrangement was an understanding that the subsequent president would be a northerner. However, Sijuade stated this had not been widely understood by southern political traditional leaders, who clamored for another southerner to succeed President Obasanjo. 3. (C) In a meeting held toward the end of 2006, a group of southern traditional leaders declared the presidency should remain in the south. This agreement cut across partisan lines, attracting adherents from all major parties and across the three southern geopolitical zones. As the campaigning began, it became clear that Rivers State Governor Odili was the southerner with the most resources and thus the region's most formidable candidate. True to their word, and despite Odili's closeness to President Obasanjo, prominent Yoruba politicans such as former Finance Minister Olu Falue, former Ondo Governor Adeferati and lawyer Tunji Braithwaite lined up with Odili, according to the Ooni. Their hopes were dashed, however, when Obasanjo steered Katsina Governor Umaru Yar'Adua through to the People's Democratic Party (PDP) nomination and pressured Odili to withdraw from the race. 4. (C) With Odili's chances extinguished, the three men no longer felt bound to the agreement on supporting a southern candidate. Being ardent opponents of Obasanjo, they were loath to back his hand-picked successor. They also could not side with Vice-President Atiku because of Atiku's affinity for Lagos Governor Tinubu, who for these Yoruba leaders, was only slightly less leperous than Obasanjo. The process of elimination lead them to endorse Buhari, the Ooni contended. Buhari, whose support in the south was essentially nonexistent, would soon seek the Ooni's blessings, predicted the Ooni. He said such blessing would not come forth from his lips. ---------------------------------- Buhari Would Not Provide Stability ---------------------------------- 5. (C) Sijuade indicated Yar'Adua would maintain political and ethnic stability in Nigeria. Evaluating the two leading northern political candidates, he declared Buhari unfit for the presidency. Calling Buhari a "fanatic" and "jihadist", Sijuade said Nigeria needed a president with "good education and family background." As an example of the desired pedigree, Sijuade pointed to Yar'Adua, whose grandmother was sister of the prince of Katsina. Given his background, Sijuade said, Yar'Adua would not "think of jihad". In an aside, Aviation Minister Kayode claimed that Buhari would have a difficult time campaigning due to lack of funds. Kayode asserted Buhari had been the beneficiary of subvention from Saudi Arabia and Libya but the GON had plugged those spigots. Alluding to his much publicized LAGOS 00000123 002.2 OF 002 confrontation with Libyan leader Qaddafi at the Abuja airport several months ago, Kayode asserted some of the Libyan's pique was due to the GON stopping him from discharging large amounts of currency from the airplane. According to Kaoyde, the funds were intended to support fundamentalist elements in Nigeria, including Buhari. --------------------------------------------- ----------- PDP's Woes May Be Balanced By Other Parties' Misfortunes --------------------------------------------- ----------- 6. (C) Sijuade predicted some PDP gubernatorial candidates would be replaced as a result of corruption investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Kayode said that this would not necessarily weaken the PDP relative to other parties, as other parties' flagbearers would also be discredited by the EFCC. -------------------------------------- Atiku Is A Threat To Future Government -------------------------------------- 7. (C) Vice President Atiku would be a menace to future regimes, Kayode warned. With his ample coffers and extensive political machine, Atiku could destabilize a future government, argued Kayode. To avoid this, the EFCC and Obasanjo administration should imprison Atiku while they had the chance, he advocated. Kayode opined that Atiku should be stripped of immunity from prosecution because should he switched political parties. He should then be arrested and prosecuted on charges of corruption. This would set an example within Nigeria and to the international community that the country is following the rule of law, Kayode said. (Comment: Kayode's views on this issue are as important as they are tendentious. Kayode was appointed a member of a special panel that recommended the GON prohibit VP Atiku and several governors from seeking further public office. End Comment) 8. (C) The EFCC would likely prohibit Vice-President Atiku from contesting the presidency, Sijuade surmised. Sijuade dismissed the possibility of an adverse public reaction. This is especially the case because the main opposition parties, the Action Congress (AC) and All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP), are comprised of former PDP members, he submitted. ------- Comment ------- 9. (C) Comment: Regarding who they support in the presidential election, President Obasanjo and the Ooni are almost joined at the hip. The Ooni will support the president full tilt. Although once a supporter of Odili, the Ooni has accepted the presidential nomination of Yar'Adua. He will now work for that ticket. The Ooni's support will help Yar'Adua in Yorubaland, yet the Ooni cannot guarantee Yar'Adua smooth sailing. Even with the Ooni beside him, Yar'Adua remains an unknown quantity to much of the southwest. From what we heard, Buhari might as well forego attempting to coax the Ooni. The Ooni had little decent to say about Buhari. While the statement about Buhari being a jihadist was hyperbolic, the Ooni was more in line with reality with his assessment of Buhari's popularity in the south as being meager. End comment.
