Politics / The Lagos State Police Command Has Described Radio BIAFRA... by ibadantiti(f): 8:57pm On Sep 15, 2015
The Lagos state police command has described Radio Biafra and Nigeria Merchant Naval Corp as illegal organisations, warning members of the public against dealing with the outfits.

The Lagos state police spokesperson, DSP Joseph Offor, stated that the general public andspecifically Lagosians, should desist from dealing with the criminal groups.

He said: “The Lagos state police command wish to alert members of the public, particularly Lagosians, of the illegal activities of an illegal organization called the Nigeria Merchant Navy Seafarers, Maritime Petroleum Security and Safety Corps.

“The self-styled organization ascribed to itself the fourth arm of the Nigeria armed forces, while its leader, one certain Mr. Agaba, parades himself as a commodore and chief of Nigeria Merchant Naval Staff.

“The group has been illegally conducting training of unsuspecting young Nigerians in Naval related duties in several private camps in at least eleven (11) states of the federation including Lagos and the federal capital territory, Abuja.

“The command would like to use this medium to advise the public to avoid any dealing with the illegal organization as they do not enjoy any federal government recognition, please.”

Offor also stated that a group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the leadership of one Mr. Nnamdi Kanu and Mr. Ikenna Nwanoneyi is also illegal.

“This clandestine group have their base at Abia state. Its primary objective is agitation for an independent state of Biafra through secession from the Nigeria federation.

To actualize this objective, they founded an illegal station know as Radio Biafra and effectively deployed it to brain wash unformed members of the public and luring them to embrace violence.

Politics / Frustration, Anger In APC Over Buhari’s Ministerial List - Daily Independent by ibadantiti(f): 9:51am On Sep 15, 2015
By Rotimi Akinwunmi

Abuja

The mood at the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday was that of disappointment, frustration and anger, following the news that President Muhammadu Buhari had sent the names of certain persons to be appointed ministers to the Department of State Services (DSS) and were already being screened.

The supposed nominations had generated heated discussions among top party chieftains and staff at the national secretariat yesterday, even as some National Working Committee (NWC) members were locked in a meeting with governorship aspirants from Bayelsa State.

It was gathered that out of seven NWC members who had shown interest in becoming ministers, four names were sent to President Buhari for his consideration.

A source at the secretariat who craved anonymity said Buhari had appointed the current Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engr. B.D. Lawal out of the four names submitted by the party leaders.

“It was not clear, however, whether the president would honour the remaining names,” the source said.

Reports in some quarters had it that the Presidency had forwarded about 20 names to the DSS for screening.

In the list of those who were said to have been screened by the DSS are former presidential candidate, Prof. Pat Utomi, Femi Falana (SAN), a former Governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, a former finance commissioner in Lagos State, Wale Edun and Former Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries Limited, Festus Odimegwu.

Others said to be on the list are Abubakar Malami (SAN), former Chief of Army, Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazu (retd.); and former chief executive of the Federal Inland Revenue, Mrs. Ifueko Omoigui- Okaru.

Another source at the APC Secretariat, however, revealed that President Buhari was considering some of the party leaders for appointment as ambassadors to Nigeria’s embassies and missions abroad.

Prominent among those that may get the ambassadorial appointment are the national chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, a national leader and former governor of old Abia State, Chief Ogbonnaya Onu.

The Declaration sets out the individual and collective rights of indigenous peoples, as well as their rights to culture, identity, language, employment, health, education and other issues. It also "emphasizes the rights of indigenous peoples to maintain and strengthen their own institutions, cultures and traditions, and to pursue their development in keeping with their own needs and aspirations".[1] It "prohibits

discrimination against indigenous peoples", and it "promotes their full and effective participation in all matters that concern them and their right to remain distinct and to pursue their own visions of economic and social development".[1][5] The goal of the Declaration is to encourage countries to work alongside indigenous peoples to solve global issues, like development, multicultural democracy and decentralization.[6]

According to Article 31, there is a major emphasis that the indigenous peoples will be able to protect their cultural heritage and other aspects of their culture and tradition, which is extremely important in preserving their heritage. The elaboration of this Declaration had already been recommended by the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action[7]

I THINK ABOUT WHAT THE PEOPLE IN AFRICA CALLED THE BIAFRANS ARE GOING THROUGH
By Shawn Branch

My dad and the people of Biafra: Listening to these songs and thinking about what my dad is going through with his stage 4 cancer. Also I think about what the people in Africa called the Biafrans are going through. Hardly anyone talks about them. They are Christians being persecuted and also genocide is being committed against them. The biggest perpetrator is their own “government” in Nigeria. The government is led by Buhari. He is a very vile and evil man. He orders attacks against defenseless Biafrans without even batting an eyelash. Anyhow, back to the origin of this post.

Shawn Branch
Thinking about this stuff and listening to the songs I am listening to it makes me want to cry. I want to cry for my dad and for the Christians who suffer because of their faith. I'm trying to hold back from crying because Lord knows I am too tired, both physically and mentally, to cry. I have a very soft, gentle heart that I don't just wear on my sleeve...my heart is too large to fit on my sleeve...I wear it...it encompasses my whole being. I haven't let the hardships I've faced and am facing change me. I haven't let society and the world get to me and change me.

Sometimes I wish I could harden up and place a shell around my heart so I won't have to feel as deeply as I do about things. My mind is constantly in drive...even when I lay down to sleep, I can't get it to stay in park. It keeps me weary. That is why almost every night I stay up all night long until I am finally tired enough to sleep. I don't want to just lay down before then because I know my mind will pick up the pace with thoughts rushing through my head. I better close this out now before the flood gates open...just pray for me, my dad and the persecuted Christians.

Politics / BIAFRA: HURIWA Condemns Killing Of Onitsha Peaceful Marchers by ibadantiti(f): 9:28pm On Sep 10, 2015
Describing as despicable and a calculated unleashing of controlled state violence and a horrendous attack against freedoms of movement and association, a pro-democracy Non-Governmental Organization HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) has condemned the alleged killing of three peaceful Pro-Biafra marchers in Onitsha, Anambra State, South East Nigeria by armed security operatives recently.

In a statement jointly signed by the National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the Media Affairs Director, Miss Zainab Yusuf, HURIWA said it was unconstitutional for armed security operatives to employ maximum military brute force to disperse peaceful civilian demonstrators irrespective of the nature of their advocacy campaign or agitations even for self government.

The group has therefore called on the Nigerian government to commence transparent, open and dispassionate investigation of the sad development with the aim of bringing the alleged masterminds of the killings of peaceful civilian marchers in Onitsha to justice for crime against humanity. It however restated the resolve of the group to compile evidences of crimes against humanity by Nigerian Armed Forces against civilians to global crimes court for prosecution of offenders in military/police uniforms.

Besides, the Rights group has asked President Buhari to address the evidently and glaring cases of systematic underdevelopment and lack of federal government developmental projects in the South East of Nigeria as the best panacea to discourage the growing agitations for self rule by the clear majority of Nigerians of South East extraction who now have the bottled up angst about being sidelined in the scheme of things in the Nigerian state.

HURIWA also asked President Buhari to adopt constructive and peaceful dialogue with leaders of the Pro-Biafra group to convince the people that they should be proud to be the Nigerians that they are and not continue with agitations for self rule.

The group said the Federal Government must educate the hierarchy and operatives of the Nigerian armed forces to accept the legal reality that all international binding humanitarian laws such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the international covenant on civil political rights recognize agitation for self rule.

HURIWA stated thus; “The incessant killings of peaceful agitators for self rule government for South East of Nigeria under the platform of Pro-Biafra groups amounts to crime against humanity and the perpetrator must not be given Federal Government cover. These spates of killings will amount to state sponsored terrorism if the perpetrators are not identified, arrested, prosecuted and punished.”

“Under the fundamental rights provisions of the Nigerian constitution in section 33(1), every person has a right to life, and no one shall be deprived intentionally of his life, save in execution of the sentence of a Court in respect of a criminal offence of which he has been found guilty in Nigeria. The members of the armed forces do not have the legal right to shoot at peaceful demonstrators.”

HURIWA also said that Article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights provides that; “Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association.”

The group said it has since set up a research team to collate all information on crimes against humanity committed by Nigerian Armed Forces in the last 16 years for their onward transmission to the international criminal court for remedial redress and sanction of the offenders no matter how highly placed .

HURIWA recalls that newspapers reported that not less than three persons were feared dead and about twenty others wounded on Sunday when members of a new pro- Biafra group-the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) and armed security operatives clashed.

It was not clear what caused the trouble, but one of the injured persons, Mr. Chinwendu Ikechukwu said the group was carrying out an evangelism programme on the need for people to embrace Biafra Republic in parts of Nkpor , Idemili North local government area after their routine meeting, adding that it was while they were on the street that security operatives opened fire on them.

He said: “On reaching Okpoko junction, we were accosted by a detachment of policemen who fired tear gas on our members numbering about 5000, but they later allowed us to go since we were non violent.

“However, on reaching Uga junction close to the Niger Bridge Head, the Naval men on duty there opened fire on us. In our defenseless state, three of our members were shot dead, while about twenty others sustained injuries. Even the police who initially allowed us to go later joined in shooting our members.”

HURIWA said these spate of terrorism unleashed on largely peaceful civilian marchers must not be swept under the carpet.

Politics / 1969: Nigeria Bans Red Cross Aid To Biafra by ibadantiti(f): 9:00pm On Sep 10, 2015
1969: Nigeria bans Red Cross aid to Biafra

Millions of people face starvation because Nigeria has banned night flights of food aid to Biafra, a breakaway state at war with federal Nigeria.
The Nigerian Federal Government has taken charge of relief operations on both sides of the front line and in doing so has stopped the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) from co-ordinating aid to starving civilians.

General Yakubu Gowon, leader of Federal Nigeria, refuses to recognise Biafra which declared independence in May 1967.

His forces have managed to shrink the rebel state to one-tenth of its original size, cutting it off from seaports and other supply lines. Food aid can only brought in from the air.

Nigerian Information Commissioner Chief Anthony Enaharo told representatives of relief organisations in Nigeria's capital, Lagos, that only "authorised relief operators" would be allowed to take in "permissible relief items" for fear of any supplies getting into the hands of Biafran troops.

This means all relief supplies will be inspected by armed forces before being allowed on to Biafra and then only between 0800 and 1700 local time.

There are three million people who are going to starve to death in the next few weeks unless something is done.

Jeremy Thorpe, Liberal Party leader

Acting president of the ICRC, Jacques Freymond, said the world must put pressure on Nigeria to allow his organisation to carry out its humanitarian mission.

In London, more than 80 backbench MPs signed an all-party motion urging the British Government to take action towards resuming the relief operation and to stop selling arms to Nigeria.

The Foreign Secretary, Michael Stewart, said representatives in Lagos would try to mediate between the ICRC and the Nigerian Government.

Yesterday, Liberal Party leader Jeremy Thorpe said he had written to the head of the United Nations, U Thant, asking him to organise a major relief effort with the Red Cross.

He said he was making his appeal independently of the British Government whose involvement in the Nigerian civil war was "immoral".

He told the Times newspaper: "There are three million people who are going to starve to death in the next few weeks unless something is done."

Biafra, under Lieutenant-Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu, is made up of the former Eastern Region of Nigeria mainly inhabited by Igbo, or Ibo, people.

In September 1966 thousands of the Igbo minority in the Northern Region were massacred by the majority Hausa who resented their relative prosperity.

As a result, a million Igbo refugees settled in the Eastern Region and expelled non-Igbos.

BY VINCENT UJUMADU
ONE of the few surviving nationalists and former Minister of Aviation in the first republic, Chief Mbazulike Amaechi has revealed how he hid the foremost South African nationalist and former president of South Africa, Chief Nelson Mandela for six months in Nigeria to evade his arrest by officials of the apartheid regime in that country.
Amaechi, who spoke with Vanguard at his Ukpor country home in Nnewi South local government area of Anambra State said people like Mandela are great assets to humanity and should not be going through the pains of life.

Amaechi
The former minister, popularly known as ‘the boy is good’, said it was a privilege to him being asked to live with Mandela when he ran away from the apartheid regime and came to Nigeria in 1963, adding that they shared great moments during the six months plus Mandela lived in his house.
According to Amaechi, even when Mandela returned to South Africa and was sentenced to life imprisonment, he still wrote him letters from prison, showing how appreciative he is.
The interview with Amaechi on Mandela went thus:
PRESENTLY, the foremost South African nationalist, Nelson Mandela, is sick and in the hospital. We want to know if you had any relationship with him in the past or an encounter?
Yes, he was the leader of the Africa National Congress, ANC. He led the group that struggled for democracy in South Africa. That was the time of the apartheid regime in South Africa and when the British government was desperately looking for him to imprison him; he ran away from South Africa and took refuge in Nigeria. That was when the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe was the President of Nigeria and late Dr. Michael Okpara the Premier of the Eastern Region.
When Mandela came to Nigeria, Zik as the leader of the nationalist group in Nigeria in consultation with Okpara decided that they should find a nationalist of Mandela’s caliber who would accommodate him. So they called on me to take Mandela and accommodate him.
At that time, I was the parliamentary secretary and also a member of the parliament before I became a minister. He moved in to my house and stayed for about six or more months with me and my wife. I was then newly married while he was in his early 40’s or so.
We used to go out together and both the British intelligence and the South African intelligence services knew that he was with me, but there was nothing they could do about it because I was in government. Then, after sometime, during our discussions, he said: “My stay here, how long will it last? “I think I better return to South Africa. They will either kill me or send me to prison and it will spur the other nationalists remaining to continue with the struggle.
So, after about six or seven months in my house, he decided to move back to South Africa. When he went back, he was promptly arrested, charged and sentenced to life imprisonment. He went to prison, but the nationalism in him did not depart from him.
He continued doing his best for some of his colleagues. He wrote me a letter from prison asking me to find employment for one Dr. Barange. Barange’s father was a lawyer who defended the nationalists in a previous case, while Barange himself was a geologist. The apartheid people in South Africa were seriously looking for him and so Mandela wanted him to get out of South Africa. I was able to get a job for Dr. Barange at the University of Ife as a senior lecturer in Geology.
Mandella wrote me from prison. In fact when you called that you were coming, I went to my office to search for this letter. This is the letter he wrote me from the prison on the 18th of February, 1964, he signed the letter as Nelson Mandela, prisoner No 116570/63.
Then during his 74th birthday, he was still in prison, I joined his family to send him goodwill messages.
When he came out from prison, I wrote him too. When he came to Nigeria after his release, he specifically requested to see me and Dr. Azikiwe. So, when he came to Enugu, the then governor, Col. Robert Akonobi, because we were in military rule then, wrote me to say Mandela wanted to see me. I honoured the invitation and I went to Enugu with my wife to see him. He was in the company of his former wife, Winnie. We shared some time together before he went back to South Africa.
After that visit in 1993, have you been communicating with him?
Yes, my last letter to him was on 18th November, 1993.
Since the last letter, have two of you been communicating?
No. We have not spoken to each other again. When he was appointed the President of South Africa, I was invited to his inauguration ceremony, but the military here did not allow me to go. They said I needed clearance to go and I did not get it.

Politics / Nigeria: Credible Evidence That Pro-biafrans Are Targeted By Police Says Amnesty by ibadantiti(f): 8:28am On Sep 10, 2015
Nigeria: Credible evidence that pro-Biafrans are targeted by police says Amnesty International:

There is evidence that pro-Biafran separatists in Nigeria are targeted by police, Amnesty International told IBTimes UK, one day after dozens of people belonging to groups advocating for a separate state were arrested.

It is believed that dozens of members of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign States of Biafran (Massob) were arrested after the inspector general of police, Solomon E Arase, released a statement urging authorities to clamp down on people who behaved violently across the country. The statement read: "This directive becomes imperative owing to recent activities of members of the Massob and the Indigenous People of Biafra [Ipob] in some parts of the country."
The number of people arrested, originally thought to be around 200, was confirmed by the police to stand at 22. Four people were arrested in Anambra State, six in Imo, one in Abia and 11 in Delta State. They were all Massob members.

Amnesty said that after speaking with "dozens of Biafran activists" in the last few years, they believe that pro-Biafrans are targeted by police. A spokesperson for the group said: "There is credible evidence that they have been arbitrarily arrested, tortured and jailed in the past. They are still targeted by the police."

The spokesperson added that according to one of the group's researchers, there are "at least two dozen Biafran activists in almost every prison in the south east of Nigeria".

When contacted by IBTimes UK, Oleehkukyu Ali, spokesperson for the police in Anambra – one of the states where the Biafran activism is mostly widespread – said:" Recently, in this and other states in the country there has been a kind of excitement from members of pro-Biafran groups, and this excitement has led to their processions to become chaotic.

"So the police received instructions that anybody who incites in the name of any group people to go on processions that are violent in nature should be arrested."

Pro-Biafran activists have also alleged that the Nigerian police act violently against them. Unconfirmed reports said that three or four unarmed members of Ipob were killed by the Navy in Onitsha, Anambra, on 30 August.

Ifeanyi Adibe, a member of Ipob, told IBtimes UK that mass arrests, kidnappings, torture and killings of pro-Biafrans are "not a new thing". He alleged: "Hundreds are known to have been abducted in the middle of the night from their homes and [they] undergo torture in various underground Nigerian torture chambers. Many more are unaccounted for. The number of those already killed can not yet be established, but we know many are missing.

"The total lack of infrastructure and communication system has made it near impossible to get real time information of, or from Biafra terror victims," he continued. "We are monitoring the situation as close as the blackout allows us, but more importantly, we are having serious challenge convincing our dying and over stretched people to still remain calm and non-violent or fight back in legitimate self-defence."

Ali rejected the allegations of violence. He said: "We do not have any problem with pro-Biafrans here, the police are not violent against them. Any group has the right to associate, but if such group wants to do any procession, they should do it within the ambit of the law.

"Processions and demonstrations should not be detrimental to the state," he continued. "They should be done in line with the constitution, without violating the law of the land or infringe people's rights. But these groups went on a rampage in a number of areas, they caused a lot of traffic congestion and damages. But even when police was deployed, there was no violence, no problem at all.

"Pro-Biafrans are not considered as a threat, but inciting people to [participate] in violent processions is against the law and no government watches any group operates under such conditions."
