BusinessRe: Naira Needs Devaluation - Segun Agbaje, GTBank CEO by IBBG(m): 4:44pm On Aug 28, 2015
KoloOyinbo:
Much of the Nigerian economy depends on the export of petroleum products. A devaluation makes your oil prices much more attractive and stimulates money coming into the country. This does have the effect of making imports more expensive for your guys but its a balance. (Also foreign investment is stimulated)

Exports bring money into the country and stimulate the economy.

Imports cost you money but raise the standard of living (often for a few only).

The only import you really NEED as opposed to 'would like' is food! As the agriculture sector continues its growth you don't need as much of this.

On balance the devaluation is probably both necessary and good for the economy as a whole.

Of course oil prices will eventually rise again and this will strengthen the Naira. Hopefully the recovery will be gradual so as foreign investment is not discouraged.

Be careful when considering the economy and the exchange rate.

While there are links a devalued currency does not automatically mean a weak economy.

This does highlight the need for self sufficiency in certain sectors/commodities (or at least as much self-sufficiency as can be had in todays global economy).
we also import petroleum products as well. don't you tink we will be shooting ourselves on the foot if we sell our petroleum cheap n import a by-product of petroleum (kerosene, petrol diesel) very expensive due to devaluation. you know that will lead to inflation in the economy which will further devalue our currency.
Devaluation without self sufficiency is just total waste of resources especially in an economy like ours.

Actually i don't think thats completely true....If you look at the gutters properly you will see the edge of the gutter is above the level of where the road is supposedly tarred......So basically some water will be collected on the road which increases erosion and breaks down the tar because the optimum flow of water into the gutter is hindered.

Nairaland GeneralOf Buhari’s Cold Feet Over Asset Declaration by IBBG(op): 2:48am On Aug 19, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari shocked many Nigerians last October when he announced that he took a loan of N27.5m to buy the All Progressives Congress’ expression of interest and nomination forms for the 2014 presidential primary. The act endeared the Katsina-born general to many who saw his stance as a departure from the profligacy which characterised the campaign of some of his opponents. It also gave him an edge over his co-contestants in the party who included the then Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso; a former vice-president, Atiku Abubakar; Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, and the publisher of Leadership newspapers, Mr. Sam Nda- Isaiah. While also delivering his speech shortly before delegates voted at the APC presidential primary which held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, in Lagos, last December, Buhari said, “I have always served Nigeria to the best of my ability. I have always tried to give more to the nation than it has given me. This is the principle of service that has guided my public life. Thus, I am not a rich person. “I can’t give you a pocketful of dollars or naira to purchase your support. Even if I could, I would not do so. The fate of this nation is not up for sale. What I will give you and this nation is all of my strength, commitment, sweat and toil in the service of the people. What I can give you is my all.” Buhari maintained that he was the only former Head of State that does not have a house in Abuja despite also being a former petroleum minister and former military governor. This emotional speech inspired many of the delegates at the jam-packed stadium, causing Buhari to win convincingly as the number of votes he garnered surpassed those of others combined. Buhari polled 3,430 votes while Kwankwaso, who came second, scored 974 votes. Former vice-president Abubakar got 954 votes to occupy the third position. In his three months of campaign, posters of ‘Sai Buhari’ and ‘Sai mai Gaskiya’ meaning “an honest person,” and “tested and trusted” adorned major cities in Nigeria. At the climax of the presidential campaign, Buhari stated that he would publicly declare his assets and liabilities, if voted into power. Buhari stated this in a document which highlights what he would do in his first 100 days in office. He said he would encourage political appointees in his administration to also declare their assets publicly. Buhari, in the document titled, “I pledge to Nigeria,” also said that all his political appointees would only earn salaries and allowances as prescribed by the Revenue and Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission. He said, “I pledge to publicly declare my assets and liabilities, encourage all my appointees to publicity declare their assets and liabilities as a pre-condition for appointment. “All political appointees will only earn the salaries and allowances determined by the RMFAC.” The promise again gave Buhari an electoral boost because the late President Umaru Yar’Adua was the first and the only Nigerian President to have publicly declared his assets when he assumed office. Buhari’s promise also threatened the chances of the then President, Goodluck Jonathan, who had said during a live media chat that he did not give a damn about public declaration of assets. Jonathan, when asked why he had refused to publicly declare his assets as an example for members of his cabinet, said, “The issue of public asset declaration is a matter of personal principle. That is the way I see it, and I don’t give a damn about it, even if you criticise me from heaven.” However, many Nigerians were shocked when after being inaugurated as the President, Buhari and Vice- President Yemi Osinbajo, declared their assets to the Code of Conduct Bureau as required by the constitution but failed to make the contents public as promised. The development has even been compounded by the fact that 80 days after Buhari and Osinbajo took over, they have not commenced the process of having the CCB verify details of their declared assets. The Chairman of the CCB, Sam Saba, said the bureau was prepared to commence the verification of assets declared by the president and the vice-president, but said the CCB was awaiting a convenient time for the two leaders to carry out the exercise. He said a conference verification which involves the examination of the particulars of an asset and the field verification which requires physical validation of a listed property had yet to be done. He said, “For instance, if you say you have three vehicles, let us see the registration numbers. We don’t have to see all the details. “Once we are able to see the receipts of the purchase of the vehicles or the registration documents, we are satisfied. But we still have to see them physically and that is the second stage which we call field verification.” The possibility of Buhari declaring his assets publicly might have further dimmed as his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, has said Buhari never promised to make his assets public. He said rather, it was the APC that made the promise during the campaign. While speaking with a social commentator, Kayode Ogundamisi, during an interview, Adesina said, “You need to get his words right. Go and check all that the President said during the campaign. In no place would you see it attributed to him as a person. “But then there is a document by his party, the APC, saying he would declare publicly. So, we need to set that right; it was a declaration by his party. The law requires public officers to declare their assets and he has done that.” Adesina added that after the CCB had verified the assets, Buhari could choose to make it public or not. The Nigerian constitution states in Chapter VI , Section 140, that a person elected to the Office of the President shall not begin to perform the functions of that office until he has declared his assets and liabilities as prescribed in the constitution. Although Buhari has committed no crime by failing to declare his assets publicly, many see it as a betrayal of trust as well as a setback in his ferocious war against corruption. Also, separating the promises Buhari made from those his party made during the electioneering seems to be an ominous sign of what to expect of APC’s promises such as free meals for pupils, allowance for unemployed youths and N5, 000 for every poor family. A civil society group, Stop Impunity Nigeria, invoking the Freedom of Information Act, applied to the CCB to request copies of the completed assets declaration forms by Buhari and Osinbajo. However, the CCB declined the request. The CCB cited the absence of a prescribed law by the National Assembly authorising the release of such information to the public, thereby making it impossible for anyone to know Buhari’s assets. Responding to the development, the Socio-Economic Right Accountability Project, argued that the declaration before the CCB alone fell short of the commitment to publicly declare assets. The group said Buhari’s public declaration of assets would boost his fight against corruption. The Executive Director, SERAP, Mr. Adetokunbo Mumuni, said, “SERAP recalls that the President had said before the election that he would publicly declare his assets and liabilities, and encourage all his appointees to publicly declare their assets and liabilities as a pre-condition for appointment. “Public disclosure of assets will give the general public a true picture of the assets of the President and the Vice- President and will send a powerful message that it is not going to be business as usual with this government. “This will also follow the best practice by former President Umaru Yar’Adua, boost this government’s fight against corruption and impunity.’’ SERAP stated that public disclosure of assets provided a baseline and means of assets to identify assets that might have been corruptly acquired and for which a public official might legitimately be asked to account for. SERAP also “urged the President to urgently take measures to seek amendment to the law relating to declaration of assets to include the requirement of public disclosure so as to bring it in line with international standards and best practices such as the United Nations Convention against Corruption.” Another group, Civil Societies Legislative and Advocacy Centre, said Nigerians were requesting that the president and the vice-president make public their asset declarations to increase transparency. Its Executive Director, Awual Musa, said even though the two top government functionaries had fulfilled the constitutional requirement of submitting their asset declaration forms, they needed to take it a step further by making it public. “What Nigerians are saying now is that making it public will take it a step further because when they make their declaration public, other public officers will have no excuse not to follow suit.” Another human rights activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, said that it was unfortunate that the assets were not made public. “Government is run on trust and integrity; and this was one of the selling points for Buhari during his campaign when he made a solemn covenant with Nigerians. There is no reason to turn away from that path of honour which he has promised Nigerians,” he added. According to Transparency International, most countries expect their top leaders to publish information about their assets. “When they don’t, or if the figures don’t seem to add up as it is happening in both Argentina and Nigeria, this can lead to both public unrest and political instability.” The organisation noted that the United States’ approach to asset declarations is often considered a model because it is both comprehensive and transparent. Although there is no requirement to audit declarations in the US, they are available to the civil society on request. As Buhari continues his raging war against corruption, Nigerians looking forward to September 7 when the 100- day deadline for the public declaration of his assets will lapse. Needless to say, Buhari’s public asset declaration will boost transparency and give credence to his anti- graft campaign. After all, he who comes to equity must come with clean hands. www.punchng.com/politics/of-buharis-cold-feet-over-asset-declaration/

Nairaland GeneralWomen With High Heels At Greater Health Risk. by IBBG(op): 3:57pm On Aug 17, 2015
When it comes to shoes, some women will go through hell for a pair of the London Jimmy Choo brand. The brand became notable in the fashion circles, especially for its high heeled bridals since 1996. Since wearing high-heeled shoes is an art, women deserve medals for learning to walk in them let alone run! But what effect does wearing high heel have on our bodies?
Most women believe that if they wear high-heeled shoes they will become more attractive, sexier, more cultured, corporate and sophisticated as well as boost their confidence.
These days at social functions, including churches, as every day wear, especially in the corporate world, Nigerian ladies can be seen wearing these ridiculously high-heeled shoes that come as high as 14 to 16 inches.
There are different kinds — the wedge, clogs, ankle strap heels, wedge sandals and the high heel sandals and they come in assorted colours.
Unknown to many, the constant wearing of these shoes presents some very serious health risks as experts have warned that they could constitute harm to the feet, hip, back and even lead to permanent body deformities. “The negative effects of wearing high heels can be experienced in particular sections of the feet, knees, legs and back.
Dr Onyebuchi Ahoma, a Clinical Psychologist, says that ladies who wear heels put themselves through unnecessary misery and pain. “Some of them cannot even walk straight on heels because they feel uncomfortable but because they think it is chic and trendy they want to endure and ignore the pains they feel,’’ he said.
Dr Abubakah Muhyi, an Orthopaedic Surgeon with the National Hospital, Abuja, says that high heel shoes have been the leading cause that usually brought female patients to visit orthopaedic doctors. Muhyi says that the constant wearing of shoes with high heels or narrow toes have led to a high incidence in corrective foot operations.
According to him, this is what happens when women choose fashionable footwear over health, and many of them aren’t even aware that they are causing harm to their health. “Years of wearing heels can lead to bunions or other infractions of the toe and calf. These signs often surface in middle aged women.
“When a woman is walking on heels, she is basically walking on the balls of her feet. The ball of the foot will experience intense pressure and this pressure more than doubles with every inch in the height of shoe heel. “Ankle injuries are always a threat and the degree of injuries can extend from sprains to fractures. Calluses, corns and bunions can be formed on feet due to high heels, especially if the shoes are tight or walked on for long periods.
“Metatarsalgia is a condition affecting the ball of the foot, where all the weight is concentrated on when a woman is in heels. “Hammertoes is a condition where the toes are maintained in downward curled position because of the continual confinement of the feet in the high heels. “The muscles of the feet become tight and are unable to stretch and straighten when out of the shoes.
“Women may complain of numbness, sharp pain and burn in the toes and ball of the foot when wearing high heeled shoes — all of which are symptoms of `Morton’s Neuroma’ which is the inflammation of the tissue surrounding the nerve between the third and fourth toes,’’ he told newsmen.
Dr Babalola Olatunji, a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon with the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi (NOHIL), Lagos, says that high heels cause much more pressure on the knees than what the knees are designed for, and could give rise to a condition called osteoarthritis as well as other joint disorders.
Olatunji noted that women who wear high heels frequently have a higher incidence of degenerative joint disease of the knees. This is because they cause a decrease in the normal rotation of the foot which puts more rotation stress on the knee. He says that a similar condition could occur with the Achilles tendon where it could retain its shortened state even when a woman is not wearing high heels.
“The calves will tend to retain the contracted and shortened state due to the feet being in high heels. The calf muscles may become difficult or virtually impossible to straighten without medical intervention. “High heels can cause a change in the way the muscles and tendons work together while walking. Normally, a tendon stretches and shortens, making walking easy on the muscles of the calf.
“However, heels wearing can cause the tendons, especially the Achilles tendon to shorten, leaving the strain on the muscles of the calf to do all the work. “They can cause foot pain, increase likelihood of sprains and fractures, and make the calves look more rigid and sinewy. They can also create foot deformities, causing an unsteady gait, shorten the wearer’s stride and can also render the wearer unable to run,’’ he said.
Another Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at NOHIL, Lagos, Dr Akintayo Akindele, is of the opinion that regular wearing of high heel shoes could affect the body posture of a woman. “The increased weight on the toes caused the body to tilt forward and to compensate, you lean backwards and overarch your back creating a posture that can strain your knees, hips and lower back. “Because the feet will be in a fixed position, the woman will have to bend her spine in the lower back more to keep her balance.
“Some women may wonder where certain back, shoulder and neck pain may come from. Well, high heels are a prime cause of such pain in the torso,’’ he added. Akindele says that with each inch added to a heel, greater problems could arise, but there are also ways to wear heels more safely… So, if you insist on wearing high heels and you are concerned about muscle and joint strains, his advice is simple:
“I am not telling people they shouldn’t wear heels, but should, maybe wear them in moderation and alternate with other flat shoes. “Women who wear high heels can take them off when feeling uncomfortable, while driving or sitting at their desk at work. Try, if possible to ease back a bit on the high footwear. “Wear high heels maybe once or twice a week. And if that’s not practical or desirable, try to remove the heels whenever possible.
“Settle for shoes that are light and comfortable and don’t have a tight area for the toes. Also, women must stray from tempting selections with a high heel. In the long run, your feet will thank you for your efforts.’’ In spite of the fuss over high heel shoes for Nigerian women, Miss Juliet Igwe, a final year student of Tai-Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode, Ogun, says that such shoes are like a “Fashion Mantra’’ for her.
She adds that they complete her total appearance, beauty and self esteem. “I love wedge heels, they make you walk elegantly and you feel this aura of confidence that completes your feminine personality. “Whether they are associated with any form of health risk, I am not aware,’’ she said.
Ms Rita Izunobi, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ritz Make-up and Décor, says high heel shoes are an essential aspect of a lady’s dressing. “For a working class lady or a lady who deals with the corporate world, heels are a must wear to greatly enhance your personal standing and gait.
“I heard they could cause back pain, but I have never experienced any,’’ Izunobi said. A civil servant, Mrs Titi Tela, is of the opinion that high heels could be uncomfortable but inevitable when it comes to a woman’s wardrobe. “Many women wear them to look and feel sexy, professional, or to boost confidence, but most ladies carry flat slip-ons or shoes in their bags to alternate because these heels can be very discomforting and you do not have a choice but to slip out of them,’’ she said.
Mr Joe Onalo, an engineer, thinks that ladies who wear high heels look attractive. “I admire ladies on high heels because they have a way of catching one ’s fancy, attention and admiration.’’

Nairaland GeneralWhy Nigerians Should Kick Against Currency Devaluation By Our Government by IBBG(op): 2:13pm On Aug 17, 2015
While devaluation has its numerous advantages chief amongst them being ;
1) Boosting exports by making our domestic produce cheaper in international market thereby increasing foreign exchange earnings
2) Boosting the capacity of local manufacturers who depend on local raw materials for production
3) Reducing over reliance on foreign goods.
It is important to note that in the long run devaluation affects us negatively most especially in a country like ours where the various factors of production(e.g Land which includes our untapped mineral resources, Labour, Capital, and even technology) has not been fully maximized.
Devaluation favours the advance economies more because their domestic market is already saturated with consumer goods hence, in other for them to take advantage of foreign markets they devalue their currencies to make the excessive goods that is too much for their domestic consumption cheaper for foreign markets to buy thereby earning foreign exchange from the excesses they can’t consume.
On the other hand in a country like Nigeria whose factors of production has not been fully utilized, devaluation opens us to;
1) Imperialist Domination; because vital and critical assets of our nation’s economy (petroleum) becomes too cheap for foreign powers to own, dominate and control considering we don’t have strong laws to shield us from such.
2) Devaluation increases the value of our external debts and amount required to service it, since it will take more naira now to pay for the debts.
3) It will lead to massive inflation especially in our country where import(e.g machines and other vital equipment for local manufacturing) is always more than export due to insufficient supply to meet local demands.
Of course international organizations like World Bank and IMF(International Monetary Fraud Fund) which serves as a deceptive front for western countries to sink deep their parasitic roots of imperialism into our beloved country, will keep admonishing us to devalue our currency. Because it makes our vital assets and common wealth cheap for them to annex, own, control and exploit at will under the guise of Foreign Direct Investments and Privatization.
Our government should rather consider increasing import tariffs or outright ban on goods we are domestically proficient in, while improving infrastructure to increase the quality of goods being produced locally to be able to compete internationally.
A situation where we export our raw materials(e.g petroleum) very cheap without value addition, only to turn around and import a by-product(petrol, kerosene, diesel, etc.) that is now very expensive due to currency devaluation, makes the whole currency devaluation idea by our leaders look foolish.

Nairaland GeneralLCCI Urges FG To Unveil Its Economic Blueprints by IBBG(op): 9:52am On Aug 06, 2015
—The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, LCCI, yesterday, urged the Federal Government to unveil its economic blueprint in order to stem the tide of declining investor’s confidence in the economy.
In a communique by the LCCI council meeting, chaired by the president, Alhaji Remi Bello, the Council alleged that there was yet no clarity in the policy direction of the government, which is a major factor for investor’s confidence.
“The uncertainty that began in January this year seems to have lingered. Council urged the Buhari administration to make a clear pronouncements with respect to its fiscal policy, foreign exchange policy, tax policy, subsidy policy, trade policy, reform of oil and gas sector (upstream and downstream), the power sector, the 2015 Budget, the auto policy, sectoral policies etc. All these are necessary for the investors to have a clear insight into the policy direction of the government and take strategic investment decisions,” the council said.
It also noted the current macro-economic challenges facing the nation, especially the decline in foreign exchange inflow, adding that the numerous efforts by the Central Bank of Nigeria to protect the foreign reserves and stabilize the exchange rate were acknowledged.
“However, Council expressed concern over CBN’s current methodology in achieving these objectives. CBN’s current model of foreign exchange management has profound negative consequences for investors’ confidence,” the LCCI council said.

Nairaland GeneralAregbesola: Osun Assembly Declares Judge’s Petition Fictitious by IBBG(op): 9:45am On Aug 06, 2015
Osun State House of Assembly, yesterday dismissed the petition by Justice Folahanmi Oloyede, against Governor Rauf Aregbesola and his deputy, Mrs Titilayo Laoye-Tomori over an allegation of mismanagement of the state resources, saying it was fictitious, frivolous and baseless.
In an unanimous decision, the house stated that the petition lacked merit, based on emotion and did not follow due process.
Oloyede had, in a 39-page petition sent to the House of Assembly highlighted, according to her, constitutional breaches of the governor and demanded his investigation and possible impeachment by the House.
The House subsequently set up a seven-member panel chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Adegboye Akintunde, to investigate the allegations and report its finding.
But the House, after adopting the report of the panel said the allegations raised by Justice Oloyede in her petition were mere embodiments of emotions and that she was political, making the House to align itself with the recommendations of the panel that the petition be dismissed.
Earlier, while reading the report, Hon Akintunde Adegboye said the committee, upon receipt of the petition found that it failed to meet the demands of House on any petition that would be considered for investigation.
He added that the committee, however refrained from dismissing it on technical ground so as not to look like the Assembly was shielding the governor from investigation.
He further explained that despite its magnanimity in allowing the petition to be considered, the petitioner again ran foul of Order 26 of Osun State House of Assembly by sending representatives on the day she was to appear before the panel.
Dealing with all issues raised in the petition, the chairman of the panel, said the petitioner could not present any documents to back up her claims, saying Oloyede, through her counsel said she would only appear and present documents when copy of Aregbesola’s response was given to her.
Recommendations
The committee therefore recommended that the petition submitted by Justice Oloyede Olamide Folahanmi should be dismissed on the grounds that;
“The petitioner abandoned her claims by refusing to appear personally before the ad-hoc committee to substantiate the various allegations levelled against the Governor and his deputy in her petition. Besides, the representatives of the petitioner could not produce any document to substantiate the allegations during their appearance.
“The Committee tapped wisdom from a decided Supreme Court case wherein it was asserted that a plaintiff succeeds on the strength of his or her claims and not on the weakness of the defence. To this effect, where the appellants failed to establish their claims, the trial court held that they weren’t entitled to the relief sought.
“The petition submitted by Justice Oloyede is frivolous, fictitious and baseless because the various allegations contained therein were based on rumours and hearsay;
“The petitioner insisted that her appearance would be predicated on having a copy of Mr. Governor’s response to her petition. This amounted to the petitioner giving condition for her appearance before the House. Her action was considered to be against the standing rules, conventions or even international best practices anywhere, including the Court of law;
“The petition brought forward by her was against all known legal norms and ethics for a sitting judge to publicly take a political position. Her action was unprecedented. Judges require sobriety to be able to dispassionately attend to cases before them and they therefore cannot afford to be emotional; and;
“Her petition was an embodiment of emotions and political partisanship; and that the State Judicial Service Commission should be requested to institute necessary disciplinary action against the petitioner, having observed that the attitude of Justice Oloyede Olamide Folahanmi was unethical and unbecoming of a serving Judge in the State Judiciary.”
Civil Societies fault Solanke, Sagay over comments
The Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State CSCEO has faulted Chief (Mrs) Folake Solanke and Professor Itse Sagay over their comments on petition written by a serving Osun state judge, Justice Olamide Oloyede against Governor Aregbesola.
The group described the statement by the two senior lawyers as a predetermined mere opinion over an issue of national importance and was made to save their Aregbesola in the face of the whole world over his financial recklessness and mismanagement of Osun commonwealth.
CSCEO noted that the statement adduced to both Solanke and Sagay was not only in bad taste but very unfortunate, anti-masses, ungodly, evil and uncalled for.
Besides, the group in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Comrade Adeniyi Sulaiman, the Deputy Secretary, Comrade Bukola Idowu and the Director of Mobilisation, Rev. Theophilus Ayodeji accused the duo of deliberate plan to incite the National Judicial Council, NJC.

Nairaland GeneralOil Spill Hits Bayelsa Community by IBBG(op): 11:06am On Aug 05, 2015
An oil spill has been reported along Jalingo settlement near Nembe Creek in Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
According to sources, the spill, which was noticed Monday night by some of the locals returning from fishing expedition is from a Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, facility in the area.
Though the cause of the spill could not be immediately ascertained, community sources said it was fast spreading and contaminating the marine environment.
Speaking on the development, the Chairman of the Oil and Gas Committee of Nembe Kingdom, Chief Nengi James called on the company to swing into action to contain and clean up the spill.
“The well head is spewing crude oil and the entire waterways and creeks are being covered with crude oil.
“We are calling on the authorities concerned, especially Shell and other regulators to immediately go for Joint Investigation Visit and clean up the spill because it has tampered with the marine and mangrove forest, the mainstay of the peoples’ existence,” he said.
