Aba Integrated Power Project (Aba IPP) has signed a N15 billion new Transaction Implementation Agreement with its leading sponsors, Geometric Power project companies, pursuant to which Afrigem Integrated Utilities Limited becomes a core investor in the integrated electricity power project. According to the parties, the new Transaction Implementation Agreement is expected to help fast-track the commissioning of the plant to takeoff in November and start the generation and distribution of quality electricity power to the residents of Aba metropolis. It will be recalled that Geometric Power led the sponsors of Aba IPP while the creditors include Diamond Bank Plc, Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc. Afrigem, a West African focused development and investment company with a 720MW pipeline of energy solutions project in the region. Geometric Power is to inject N15 billion into the project, making Geometric Power one of the most capitalised private sector driven power companies in the sub-region. In its 3-year growth plan, the Sponsors and Afrigem expect to increase the plant capacity from 141MW to 341MW by 2018. Professor Bart Nnaji, Chairman of Geometric Power Limited led the signing on behalf of the project sponsors while Mallam Samaila Zubairu, Vice Chairman of Afrigem, led the signing on behalf of Afrigem Integrated Utilities Limited at the ceremony attended by energy consultants, top bank executives and representatives of the various professional parties. “I believe that the immense benefits that this new implementation agreement will bring will make Nigeria a better place especially as it will help boost economic production when the power plant starts generating power soon.” We commend Geometric Power, StanbicIBTC and others that have made this to work today. We also commend AMCON for helping to bear the burden when it was very heavy for us; but the coming of Afrigem into this integrated project is a good one for all of us and for Nigeria”. Professor Nnaji, on his part, expressed delight at the new development. He noted that Aba IPP remains the first green-field integrated power project developed by a private indigenous consortium which, upon commissioning, will deliver quality reliable 24-hour electricity supply to industries, commercial enterprises, residents of Aba metropolis and bring huge economic revival in the country. “I would like to applaud everyone who helped to see this come to pass today. We are very happy that this project is on and with this we will bring power to the people of Aba and we hope to see the economic revival that this provision will bring to Nigeria,” he said. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/07/geometric-power-banks-others-sign-n15bn-new-agreement-on-power/ |
ABUJA — Former Governors of Adamawa and Imo States,
Admiral Murtala Nyako (rtd) and Ikedi Ohakim were
separately docked before the Abuja Division of the
Federal High Court, yesterday, over allegations
bordering on money laundering, abuse of office and
misappropriation of public funds.
Whereas Nyako was accused of diverting over N40 billion
from the Adamawa State treasury between January 2011
and December 2014, Ohakim, on the other hand, was
alleged to have amassed about $2 million from the public
coffers and used same to acquire a mansion at the
Asokoro District of Abuja.
Nyako was arraigned alongside his son, Abdulaziz and
two others, Zulkifikk Abba and Abubakar Aliyu. They are
answering to a 37-count criminal charge dated July 7.
Five companies that allegedly
served as conduit pipes for
the illegal diversion of the
funds —Blue Opal Limited,
Sebore Farms & Extension
Limited, Pagoda Fortunes
Limited, Tower Assets
Management Limited and
Crust Energy Limited— were
equally charged as the 5th to
9th accused persons.
In the charge which was
preferred against them by the
Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission, EFCC, the accused persons were
alleged to have in their bid to conceal the illicit origin of
the funds, embarked on the development of estates in
Abuja.
Besides, EFCC said it was able to trace various cash
lodgements that Nyako and his son made into various
bank accounts they operated in the name of the
companies that were indicted in the fraud.
The anti-graft agency maintained that huge sums of
money which the accused persons purported to be
security funds, were illegally placed under the control of
one Ma’aji Iro, the then Regional Manager of Zenith Bank
Plc, North-East, Nigeria.
They were said to have sequentially withdrawn the funds
through the bank manager and channelled same for
private use, contrary to section 15 (2) (a) & (6) of the
Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012
and punishable under section 15 (3) of the same Act.
Meantime, all the accused persons, including Ohakim,
yesterday, pleaded not guilty to the charges against
them.
Shortly after Nyako and his co-accused persons entered
their plea to the 37-count charge yesterday, the
prosecuting counsel, Mr. Aliyu Yusuf urged Justice Evoh
Chukwu to okay the matter to proceed to trial
immediately.
Yusuf produced his first witness who mounted the dock
with a view to begining his Evidence-in-Chief.
Bail application
At that juncture, the defence lawyer Chief Kanu Agabi,
SAN, prayed the court to grant him time to properly
study the charge which he said was only served on them
on Tuesday, to enable him to be able to put up a
formidable defence for his clients.
“My Lord, it is in the interest of justice that we
familiarise with it to be able to put up our defence. I
commend the diligence of the prosecution, but I was
going to avert your lordship to the issue of bail of the
accused persons”, Agabi submitted.
He begged the court to use its discretion and release the
former governor and the other accused persons on bail
since they were previously granted administrative bail by
the EFCC.
“My Lord, it is at the expense of the state that the
accused persons are kept. Our Prisons are congested, I
plead, I beg, I urge for their release on bail”, he added.
In opposition, the EFCC, while
placing reliance on section 299
of the newly enacted Criminal
Justice Administration Act,
applied that the accused
persons be remanded in prison
custody.
The EFCC lawyer stressed that
he was only served with their
bail application yesterday
afternoon, saying he would need
time to go through it.
Yusuf told the court the EFCC
has no facility to keep the accused persons.
Sensing danger, Nyako’s lawyer quickly pleaded that
instead of prison, his clients should rather remain in the
custody of the EFCC.
Accused to remain in EFCC custody
In a short ruling, Justice Chukwu ordered the remand of
all the accused persons in EFCC custody till Friday when
their bail application will be heard.
Similarly, Justice Ademola Adeniyi directed that former
governor Ohakim who is answering to a three-count
criminal charge should remain with the EFCC till today
when his bail application will be heard.
EFCC had through its lawyer Mr. Festus Keyamo,
objected to an oral bail application that was made
yesterday by Ohakim’s lawyer, Chief Chris Uche, SAN.
Justice Ademola who in his ruling ordered Ohakim to file
a formal bail application, also directed the EFCC to grant
him access to his wife, lawyer and medication.
At the end of the proceedings yesterday, all the accused
persons were conveyed back to the EFCC detention
facility in a white coaster bus with an Abuja registration
number, BR 739 BWR

After several years of contention over the impending demolition of the main section of Ladipo International Auto Parts Dealers market, in Mushin, the traders and authorities of the Mushin Local Government Area, may have brokered a truce, if the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both warring parties are anything to go by. Vanguard gathered that the MoU gives the traders an additional one month to vacate the market premises for onward development by the Council developer. Since 2013, when about 70 shops were purportedly demolished by the Lagos State Government after shutting the market for contravening the state’s environmental laws, there has been a continued discrete face-off between the traders and government authorities. Countdown to the April 11 governorship election in the state, aggrieved traders in the market were alleged to had bluntly told Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who was the standard-bearer of the All Progressives Congress, APC, that they would not support him, because of the alleged concurrent witch-hunt they suffered under the administration of his predecessor, former Governor Babatunde Fashola. In what has been described in some quarters as a vindictive action, penultimate Monday, the traders were caught unawares as armed security men comprising policemen, Operation MESA (OP MESA) and operatives in plain clothes, reportedly stormed the market, ordering traders to vacate their shops. In the process, about 150 shops were said to have been demolished with their roofing sheets pulled off, on the orders of officials of Mushin LGA, penultimate Tuesday. Although, Vanguard gathered that the market was reopened partially penultimate Wednesday. We lost N300m to demolition – Traders When contacted, Chairman, Ladipo Central Executive Auto Dealers Association, Mr Kingsley Ogunor, who expressed shock over the demolition exercise, decried that traders lost over N300 million in terms of cash and property, because they were not duly informed to evacuate goods in their shops. Ogunor who alleged that authorities of the Mushin LGA did not follow judicial process before carrying out the demolition exercise said: “There was no notice to traders before the demolition exercise. The shops were allocated to us by the same Mushin LGA and we have been consistent in paying our tenancy allowance. I see no reason why they decided to demolish the shops and our goods. “At least if a tenant is to be evicted from the house, due process will be followed. The only thing I could remember was authorities of the Council called for a meeting, and when I could not make it to the meeting, the next thing we saw was a letter from the Council, disclosing its intention to come and shutdown the market. “To our surprise, they commenced the demolition exercise on Monday. The Council authorities should not take laws into its hands, it shouldn’t exhibit executive lawlessness. If the Executive Secretary wants to dialogue with us, there should be due process. We lost over N300 million in terms of cash and property”. However, when Vanguard visited the market, traders were sighted in different groups bemoaning their fates. A banner which hung on the gate beared an inscription which says: ‘Proposed Commercial Development of Mushin, Lagos.’ It stated that the Mushin Local Government in conjunction with a developer known as Total Value Integrated Services Limited were to commence the building of a modern plaza market there. The duration for completion is 18 months. We never demolished any part of Ladipo market – LASG Dispelling insinuations that it demolished the Ladipo market out of vindictiveness and fallout of the last governorship elections, the Lagos State Government has denied demolishing parts of the market, adding that Governor Ambode has no plans to relocate the popular auto parts market. The Executive Secretary, Mushin LGA, Jide Bello, last Thursday, said the LGA developer had moved in “to take ownership” of the market, but “we have no plan to demolish the market.” Bello said the council’s plan, as contained in an agreement earlier reached with the traders, was to redevelop the market in phases lasting three to five months of construction work. According to him, ‘’though bulldozer of the developer had moved in on Tuesday, but business activities had continued in the market unhindered and the traders are presently at their stalls going about their normal business activities.” Bello explained that because of the eyesore which the unwholesome activities of some traders had caused, the Council decided to redevelop the market that has degraded and not fit into the mega city plans of the state. He added that after several meetings with the leaders of the various associations in the market, the Council resolved to undertake the market development in phases. ‘’Because of this, we have not collected any form of rent from the traders in the market since the beginning of 2015,’’ he said. Noting that there would be no going back on the council’s decision to redevelop the market to meet the megacity status of Lagos, the Council boss, however, assured all traders in the market that Mushin remains a home for all of them. ‘’Current owners will be given due attention in the re-allotment of the market once construction is completed, as long as they can provide valid ownership papers,’’ he assured. MoU that stalled demolition In related development, Ogunor said the traders and the Council authorities had signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which gives the traders additional one month to vacate the market premises, thus stalling the demolition exercise which began penultimate Monday. The market leader, who made this disclosure to Vanguard, said the MoU was reached to stall the demolition exercise which could have increased the losses suffered by the traders had it continued. Having spent over 25 years in the market, the market leader said the MoU would also allow traders move their goods to safer areas where it would not be damaged by rain. He added that what raised this concern was the failure of the State Government to compensate traders who had their shops demolished in 2013, for allegedly contravening the state’s environmental laws. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/07/ladipo-market-demolition-facts-of-3-year-feud-between-lasg-traders/ |
While I'm in strong support of releasing our girls, wouldn't it embolden the sect to kidnap more citizens and demand for trade since they know they'll be holding us by jugular by doing that. How do we solve the issue without giving them the upper hand? Quite a conundrum |

MalcoImX:Have I absolved GEJ of any blame? I'm not against criticism. Being constructive in criticism is knowing when to give ur opponent credit wen they deserve it and wen to criticize them. I'm not a hypocrite that doesn't see anytin good in what sombody else does simply becos he is my opponent. I applaud them wen they are right as well. Well that's my own mindset and mentality. I don't expect you to reason the same way like me. |
ddippset:He has just replied u with fact. And u don't have anytin to counter is better u keep quiet rather than abuse and insult. A true leader is measured by how much his works speaks for him even when he is not in the helm affairs. So if we have constant light now then kudos to GEJ which means he was actually working unknown to us. The new administration is yet to inaugurate any capital project. Even if it does, it will take 1-2yrs to see or feel the results. So give kudos when it is deserved, it doesn't take away anytin frm u, it shows u belong to higher class. |

At times I just shake my head at people's comment. What has buhari done so far to merit applaud right frm wen he was sworn in. Is it now they were suppose to debrief him or wen he was just two weeks in power, he was suppose to do that. I'm beginning to wonder whether nigerians have grown accustomed to mediocrity such that instead of turning on the heat and demanding the best frm our leaders, we applaud their mediocrity. SMH |
Osogbo—SCORES of Osun State citizens were yesterday said to be warming up towards participating in today’s rally in support of Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s impeachment, according to the organisers, Civil Societies’ Coalition for Emancipation of Osun State, CSCEO. According to the group at a press briefing held in Osogbo yesterday, over 20 civil and faith based societies who are members of CSCEO are already mobilising their members towards the mass rally. The group’s Chairman, Comrade Adeniyi Sulaiman Alimi, gave the names of association ready for the rally as The Voices, KIMPACT, Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice, Grassroot Democratic Network, Christian Initiative for Nation Building, Christian Leadership Mobilisation and Better Future Initiative. Others are Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), Justice, Development and Peace Commission Movement (JDPCM), Positive Movement, Good Governance Support Group, Democratic Socialist Movement and Conference of National Political Parties (CNPP). Alimi explained that over three petitions including the one sent by a state serving judge, Justice Folaranmi Oloyede, calling for Aregbesola’s probe and impeachment are presently before members of the state House of Assembly and the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC). Hold Omisore, PDP responsible – APC Meantime, the All Progressives Congress in the state has called on security agencies to hold the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Iyiola Omisore and his party responsible for any breach of the peace in the state. The party, in a statement by the Directorate of Publicity, Research and Strategy yesterday said it was aware of plans by a group of profiteers who were being sponsored by Omisore and his party to unleash violence on the state, using the issue of workers’ salaries as camouflage. ‘’ Specifically we must alert the whole world to a threat issued by Omisore on June 14 this year at the secretariat of the PDP in Osogbo where he promised members of his party that he was prepared to make this state ungovernable for Governor Rauf Aregesola. ‘’ We are therefore certain that the crisis being orchestrated in the state is to get what the people of Osun denied him through a democratic process on August 9, 2014. This was his resolution after the Supreme Court decision which finally sealed his ambition through a pronouncement on May 27, this year. ‘’ We are using this medium to inform the public and the media to be wary of activities of this set of opportunists who are the real profiteers behind the undeserved focus on Osun among the more than 20 states that are currently facing salary challenges. ‘’ The APC government under Aregbesola in Osun has been having very fruitful negotiations with the labour and we can therefore say without any contradiction that the labour has no hand in this proposed protest.’’ APC, sinking govt passing buck – PDP The PDP in response said; “PDP observe with disillusion the allegation by Aregbesola and his paid agents that Otunba Iyiola Omisore and PDP are sponsoring workers to protest unpaid salaries.’’ A statement by the PDP spokesperson in Osun state, Prince Diran Odeyemi added, “It is unfortunate that the sinking government still be engaging in buck passing when he should be busy looking for money to settle unpaid salaries and allowances of workers. “In the last one week, we have not issued any statement because we observe workers are rising to the occasion to fight for their rights. “We are not involved as a party, Omisore is not involved and will never be party to any act of lawlessness but we demand from the governor to explain if he has paid these workers. “Have they been paid their salaries? If no, whatever the steps they take inasmuch as such is within the ambit of the law, nothing can stop workers from demanding for their rights. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/07/impeachment-mass-rally-against-aregbesola-slated-for-today/ |
AtlanticBreeze:Hahahahahahaha. That got me cracking real hard. That's what we call brutality in mortal kombat. Hand to leg combo is just bad ass. |
What is here to celebrate and jump up over? Is it the workers that deserve their long over due salaries. There is nothing special or breath taking about the move, cause the workers would have made the nation ungovernable for them. I'll be awed when he draft a comprehensive and concise policy direction and mission statement he decides to drive the nation towards. That will determine the long term growth and sustainability of our nation going forward. Obasanjo came with vision 2020, privatization and liberalization of the economy. Yaradua came on board with 7-point agenda, Goodluck brought the transformation agenda in all sectors of the economy with strong policies that is still driving this administration. Buhari should come up with one so that we can position ourselves and envision where the country can be in the nearest future. |
When has it become a crime to air ur concerns about security issues in a match especially in a volatile region like the north. NFF is just the problem with our football. Even if we hire mourinho or guardiola or ancelloti or even call back the legendary sir alex ferguson frm retirement, they will fail woefully with this NFF at the helm of affairs. Their grouse with keshi started when he refused to share the nations cup individual largess he got from winning the trophy with them. |
Yenagoa—The kidnapped wife of former Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly and ex-Acting governor of the state, Madam Martha Nestor Binabo, has regained her freedom. The 48-year-old woman was handed over to a negotiator at Buguma area of Rivers State in the early hours of yesterday, according to a family source. While some denied knowledge of payment of ransom, others claimed that N8.2m was paid to secure her freedom. The kidnappers were said to have warned the family not to involve the police in any rescue effort. Madam Binabo was allegedly released with a transport fare of N18,000 and a bag of fish. When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Asinim Butswat, said he was yet to be briefed on the development but a family source confirmed her release, saying “she was well taken care of by the kidnappers.” It was learned that the kidnappers gave her N18,000 as transport and a big bag of fresh fish for her family. Madam Binabo was kidna-pped last Monday by armed men clad in military uniform at Abura on the outskirts of Yenagoa, the state capital. The gunmen were said to have lured their victim outside her company’s gate for a talk only to force her into a waiting car and drove towards Otuokpoti sand dump, where they escaped into the creeks in a speedboat. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/07/kidnappers-release-former-bayelsa-speakers-wife-give-her-n18000-bag-of-fish/ |

Wen they were supposed to lend d last administration their support to combat terrorism, they played politics with it not knowing they themselves will face their undoing thinking they were spoiling the last administration. Now faced with the same dilemma they seem to be confused not knowing what to do.
