It is advisable to drill borehole anytime you're ready for it, be it rainy season or dry season. The most important thing is for the drillers to ensure that they drill to the depth of the productive fresh water aquifer, once that is achieved, there won't be any issues at all, even at the peak of the dry season. Thank you for your question, it is important to note that vertical holes are completed by lowering a free-hanging string of casing into an oversized, straight borehole. The casing is mostly subjected to minor compressive stresses during installation. As a result of that, casing breakage may occur during installation and this will in turn allow infiltration of sediments and any other type of underground water contaminants into the borehole which may contaminate the freshwater or even condemn the borehole.

Thank you for your interest in our organization, we sincerely appreciate it. The truth of the matter is that borehole drilling is not really determined that way, I always advice my clients to take the extra pain of carrying out a geophysical survey in the project location so as to have first hand geological and hydrogeological information. Is difficult to determine for sure the exact nature of the aquifer ( productive or not), the depth of the fresh water aquifer and the different formations one will encounter in the course of drilling proper. I therefore advice you to consider carrying out a hydrogeological investigation of the underground water before embarking on the drilling proper. Thanks a lot.

As regards my location sir, i do not mind using any depth you would propose to me, i thought 40m would be okay considering that area, (that is where i live plus we are to assume any location we want), what do you think sir?

then i want to assume i consulted a not too expensive company to handle the project , the lecturer says we must know at least most of the vital details of these things. diameters, the pipes etc as u stated earlier, i do not really know much.

The depth of fresh water aquifer is not really determined that way, normally depths vary from one location to the other within the same locality, but a depth of 40m could be said to be on the average, but be mindful of the fact that some locations there are a little above that depth, while some other locations there fall below that depth. The pump to be used is called submersible pump and for a depth of 40m, 1Hp submersible pump is suitable for it. The diameter of the borehole casing pipes is largely determined by your budget and the standard of the drilling company, casing pipes of 5 inches diameter is suitable for it. There are other materials like tension rope, riser pipes, etc, that are used during submersible pump installation. Sango and it's environs are very challenging, it is quite advisable to carryout a geophysical and hydrogeological investigation at the site so as to determine the depth of the underground water, the quality of the underground water, the rate of aquifer recharge, etc. Kindly let me know when your ready so that we can discuss it further.

I decided to lay everything on the table for you to take an appropriate decision. Is difficult for me to categorically tell you to do this or do that. I can only guide you in taking a favourable decision, a lot depends on you and how badly you need water at that particular site. I advice you to have a written agreement with whoever that will drill the borehole for you and don't commit all the funds into his hands at once. There is nothing wrong in trying, you could still get the daily quantity of water you need from there, is not impossible. Moreover, you need to engage the services of a Geologist so as to effectively discriminate the soil samples from the different geological formations.

When it comes to underground water extraction, we always pay very serious attention to the aquifer production and rate of recharge. The Geophysical team through the help of a geophysical and hydrogeological investigation, helps us to locate the productive aquifer within the confined aquifer zone of the underground water. Therefore, in this particular instance, we are concerned with the rate of production, is important to note that the rate of fresh water production and extraction varies from one aquifer to the other in the same locality. They recommended the use of 0.5horse power submersible pump in the borehole and that is the smallest pump in the market, it is designed to be used in wells with very low aquifer production. There is equally something we call rate of draw down in water extraction, if a pump of higher capacity is installed in a well with low aquifer yield, it could dry up the well and the submersible pump could burn in the process.

6.1​The result of the vertical electrical sounding (VES) carried out at the above named locations showed a total of five (5) Geoelectric layers. The first layer has apparent resistivity of 1519.8 ohm-m and thickness of 2.5 meters, the second layer has apparent resistivity of 37.7 ohm-m and thickness of 14.6 meters, the third layer has apparent resistivity of 81.5 ohm-m and thickness of 25.8 meters, the fourth layer has apparent resistivity of 32.5 0hm-m and thickness of 70.9 meters while the fifth layer has apparent resistivity of 839.8 0hm-m with an indeterminate thickness.
RECOMMENDATION
7.1​From the above findings and discussions, domestic borehole depth of 95 meters (312ft) to 115 meters (377ft) is recommended to be drill at the above named location. The borehole yield will be very low due to low recharge hence a pump of low capacity of say 0.75 to 1.5HP should be installed in the borehole with automatic regulator for efficient management of the water because the yield may be low.
