Health14 Bad Habits Affecting Your Health by IbnIbrahim(op):
1. 'Crack’ Your Knuckles

It doesn’t just annoy your friends and co-workers -- it may not be very good for you, either. A substance called synovial fluid keeps your joints moving easily. The sound your knuckles make when they “crack” comes when you pop tiny bubbles in that fluid. If you do it all the time, you’re more likely to have swollen hands and a weaker grip over time. It doesn’t seem to raise your chances of arthritis, though.

2. Bite Your Nails

This can damage your teeth as well as the skin around your nail bed, which can lead to infection. You also may get more colds and other illnesses when you put your fingers, which often carry germs, into your mouth. It can help to keep your nails neatly trimmed or manicured. If stress could be the reason for your habit, you might try things like exercise to manage it. Talk to your doctor if you want help stopping.

3. Cheat Yourself on Sleep

If you don’t get enough sleep, you’re not just turning yourself into a daytime zombie -- you also could be more likely to have high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and depression. And it might be harder for you to learn and remember things. Set a regular sleep routine and stick with it. And do your best to get 7-8 hours a night.

4. Blast Your Headphones

Sound is measured in decibels -- normal conversation is about 60 decibels. It's best to keep the volume in your headphones below 75 (about as loud as a vacuum cleaner) to be safe. And don't listen for more than a couple of hours at a time. You're more likely to lose hearing as you age if you're around loud noise a lot. That happens with more than half of us by age 75. Hearing loss in older adults is linked to thinking problems and even brain tissue loss.

5. Surf Before Bed

Not waves -- the Internet. The “blue light” given off by electronic gadgets like phones, computers, and TVs can mess up your sleep. And some studies show that too much of any kind of nighttime light might be linked to cancer (especially breast and prostate), diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. Calm yourself before bed. If you want to read something, open up a book. Keep your bedroom dark and quiet for better sleep.

6. Sit for Long Periods

Most people spend too much time in chairs. Part of the problem is the modern workplace, where you may hunker over your computer for hours on end. This slows down your metabolism, which means you could gain weight. It’s also linked to other health problems, including heart disease. There’s an easy fix, though: Just get up now and then and move around. Even a 10-minute walk each day can help.

7. Drink Alcohol

Regardless of the researchers supporting moderate intake of alcoholic beverages, you want to save yourself from health challenges such as kidney disease, liver disease, digestive issues, heart problems, bone damage, cancer by stopping alcohol intake
The health risks obviously outweigh the benefits, you may want to consider stepping down on your alcohol intake and stopping eventually.

8. Eat Too Much

If you make a habit of it -- even if it’s healthy food -- you’re likely to gain weight. That can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure, and it can raise your chances of certain kinds of cancer. Check portion sizes before meals and measure out snacks you have in front of the TV, so you know exactly how much you’re eating.

9. Eat Too Quickly

It can leave you less satisfied -- and make you more likely to overeat over the course of the day. If you slow down, you could feel fuller with less, because your body has a chance to realize you’ve eaten enough. It can help to focus when you eat: Take small bites, and chew them well.

10. Skip Flossing

You did a full brush, isn’t that enough? Nope, you need to clean between your teeth, too, if you want to do all you can to get rid of plaque, the sticky bacteria-filled film that causes cavities. Too much plaque also can lead to gum disease, a serious condition that’s linked to other health issues like stroke, heart disease, and diabetes.

11. Eat Junk Food

Soda, candy, and pastries have lots of calories and little nutrition, and all that sugar gets into your blood too quickly. Those kinds of things are linked to serious health problems like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. “Complex carbs” with more fiber and nutrition -- whole grains, fruits, and vegetables -- take longer to digest, satisfy your hunger, and give you steady energy. “Good” fats like nuts and seeds also can be part of a healthy diet.

12. Spend Too Much Time Alone

It’s not how many people you know or how often you see them -- what matters is that you feel connected to others. If you don’t, you’re more likely to have high blood pressure, depression, brain issues (like Alzheimer’s), and inflammation. If you feel alone, reconnect with family or friends, or start something new that involves other people -- join a book club or learn to play tennis or bridge, for example.

13. Smoke Cigarettes

This bad habit affects nearly every organ in your body. It can lead to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke, bronchitis, emphysema, and other health problems. It also raises your risk of tuberculosis, eye problems, and immune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis. And if you spend a lot of time around someone who smokes, you’re more likely to have asthma, heart disease, lung cancer, or a stroke. Talk to your doctor about quitting smoking.

14. Go to a Tanning Bed

Even though this is not common in our environment, it is worthy to note considering the rate at which we are adopting western lifestyles.
A tanning bed is a piece of equipment with ultraviolet lights. You lie on it to make your skin browner. It predisposes to skin cancer.

Jobs/VacanciesEmployees Don’t Leave Companies, They Leave Managers by IbnIbrahim(op): 3:01pm On Jan 05, 2018
Employees join companies but leave managers. A Gallup poll of more 1 million employed U.S. workers concluded that the No. 1 reason people quit their jobs is a bad boss or immediate supervisor. 75% of workers who voluntarily left their jobs did so because of their bosses and not the position itself. In spite of how good a job may be, people will quit if the reporting relationship is not healthy. "People leave managers not companies...in the end, turnover is mostly a manager issue."

Here are the four types of bad bosses that make employees want to quit companies:

1. “Marionette” - In an age of uncertainty, many managers are yielding to this trap of just playing it safe to preserve their position and privileges. They just follow orders. They never stand up for their team or question policies. They are mere puppets and exude no loyalty to employees. A lack of integrity in a manager can make an employee lose passion for the job.

" Respect is how to treat everyone, not just those you want to impress." ~Richard Branson

2. “King Kong” - Some managers when they reach to the top immediately forget where they came from. These type of managers possess a superiority complex and like to draw the distinction between management and staff. It is dreadful to work under a manager who is more worried about pushing their weight around than building relationships. Great leaders don’t talk down to their employees or make them feel inferior. Respect is a must.

3. “Superman” - They think the organization revolves around them. Some start behaving like they are the owners of the company. This trap includes making all of the decisions solo, ignoring feedback and taking the credit. When employees don't feel appreciated, morale and engagement plummets.

" Leaders who don't listen will eventually be surrounded by people who have nothing to say." ~Andy Stanley

4. “Taskmaster” - Their sole focus is bottom-line. Continuously drilling employees is a sure way make them unhappy at work. Micromanagement suffocates, demoralizes and kills creativity. If you hired someone, it means you believe they are capable of doing the job. A manager's job is to motivate and provide guidance and support. It's not constantly monitoring an employee's every movement.

A bad boss creates fear and makes work drudgery. Studies show having a bad boss raises a worker's chance of having a heart attack by as much as 60 per cent. What was it about a bad manager that increased the risk of heart disease? The stress and anxiety caused by unfeasible targets, lack of support, unfair practices and threats of punishment

Jobs/Vacancies11 Top Concentration Killers by IbnIbrahim(op): 9:58am On Jan 04, 2018

1. Social Media: Whether you're living with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or just have trouble focusing from time to time, today's world is full of concentration killers. Psychologist Lucy Jo Palladino, PhD offers a few tips to manage distractions, starting with social media. It's easy to connect with friends -- and disconnect from work -- many times an hour. Every status update zaps your train of thought, forcing you to backtrack when you resume work.

Solution: Avoid logging in to social media sites while you're working. If you feel compelled to check in every now and then, do it during breaks, when the steady stream of posts won't interrupt your concentration. If you can't resist logging in more frequently, take your laptop someplace where you won't have Internet access for a few hours.

2. Email Overload: There's something about an email -- it shoots into your inbox and itches to be answered immediately. Although many emails are work-related, they still count as distractions from your current project. You won't make much progress if you constantly stop what you're doing to reply to every message.

Solution: Instead of checking email continuously, set aside specific times for that purpose. During the rest of the day, you can actually shut down your email program. This allows you to carve out blocks of time when you can work uninterrupted.

3. Your Cell Phone: Perhaps even more disruptive than the ping of an email is the ringtone on your cell phone. It's a sound few of us can ignore. But taking a call not only costs you the time you spend talking -- it can also cut off your momentum on the task at hand.

Solution: Put caller ID to good use. If you suspect the call is not urgent, let it go to voicemail. If you're working on a particularly intense project, consider silencing your phone so you're not tempted to answer. Choose specific times to check voicemail. Listening to all your messages at once can be less disruptive than taking every call as it comes in.

4. Multitasking: If you've mastered the art of multitasking, you probably feel you're getting more done in less time. Think again, experts say. Research suggests you lose time whenever you shift your attention from one task to another. The end result is that doing three projects simultaneously usually takes longer than doing them one after the other.

Solution:[/b Whenever possible, devote your attention to one project at a time, particularly if you're working on an intense or high-priority task. Save your multitasking skills for chores that are not urgent or demanding -- it probably won't hurt to tidy up your desk while talking on the phone

5. Boredom Some of the tasks we have to do each day are more interesting than others. The boring ones may burn through your attention span in minutes, making you extremely vulnerable to distractions. Your phone, the Internet, even the prospect of dusting your workspace can seem tempting if you're bored.

Solution: Make a deal with yourself: If you stay on task for a certain period of time, you earn a 10-minute break. Reward yourself with coffee, a favorite snack, or a walk outside. Boring tasks are easier to accomplish when you have something to look forward to. This is also one case where multitasking may work well. Listening to the radio while filing receipts could help you stay put long enough to finish the job.

Ever heard the expression for every finger you point, there's three pointing back at you? It certainly applies to management. When team morale is low, resignation letters are flying in, and people are avoiding eye contact with you in the hallways, it may be time to accept that you may be the problem.

Whoever is privileged enough to hold the title of "manager," your first priority is being fully cognizant of the most common reasons why your best people may be headed for the exits.

4 Dumb Things to Avoid Doing
I have analyzed HR data for several years to detect the causes of poor management and, even worse, poor management that leads to costly turnover. If you're in a management role, let me offer you four clear reasons for your best people possibly packing their bags.

1. Managers bully their employees

The effects of bullying in the workplace are huge and costly for businesses. In a recent study from the Workplace Bullying Institute, nearly one fifth of all American workers reported bullying in the workplace. The alarming part? 61 percent of bullies are bosses, the majority (63 percent) operating alone. So how can you tell without a doubt that you work for a boss who bullies? The bullying boss isn't the "tough boss" who offers blunt, constructive criticism aimed at helping your performance; rather, they rain down destructive criticism aimed at intimidating you and humiliating you as a human being (often in front of your peers), and attacking you on a personal level rather than criticizing your work. How disruptive is this type of boss to the workplace? Baird Brightman, a behavioral scientist and consultant reports that "aggressiveness (both verbal and physical) undermines safety and requires people to divert resources from productive work into defensive operations such as fight or flight."

2. Managers don't give positive reinforcement.

Research conducted by Zenger/Folkman involving close to 8,000 managers revealed nearly 40 percent of them conceded to never giving positive reinforcement. That's a definite problem because the same study found that a manager's willingness to give positive feedback was the strongest predictor of whether their direct reports perceive them to be effective, honest communicators. Conversely, plenty more evidence points to positive feedback linked to increasing employees' performance and a company's bottom line. One study by Dr. Marcial Losada and Dr. Emily Heaphy found that high-performing teams receive nearly six times more positive feedback than less effective teams.

3. Managers take credit for their employees' work.

The most recent example of this unfortunate truth is via an employee survey conducted by BambooHR. They asked more than 1,000 US-based employees to rate 24 "typical boss behaviors" from 'totally acceptable' to 'totally unacceptable.' BambooHR found that 63 percent of respondents said managers who hog all the credit was unacceptable, and something they would consider worth quitting over. Women felt even worse about their bosses wrongfully taking credit, with 71 percent of them calling it the worst "bad boss" behavior.

4. Managers have little to no concern for their employees' work-life balance

Although flexible work schedules and remote work is on the rise, for the most part, managers still dictate and control the amount of work and what hours their people will work. As a result, people's personal or family lives are typically sacrificed for the job; overwork is commonly evidenced by 50-hour-plus work weeks, little or no vacation time, and 24/7 availability for work communication. Consequently, there are profound health risks involved through the effects on work stress, sleep, and the conflict between work and other life roles. In one massive joint study by Harvard Business School and Stanford University, it was found that long work hours were associated hypertension and unhealthy behaviors such as smoking.

Bringing It Home

While salary is important, good employees are ultimately intrinsically motivated. Your job as manager is to connect with them relationally, provide for them what they need to succeed, and make them feel valued and respected as human beings. When you do, you'll give them plenty of reasons to want to get up in the morning and willingly and passionately contribute meaningful work with both their hearts and minds in it.

Hello, i'm timi i stay in ilorin, kwara......i want to have my tooth filled up with composite because it broke, i previously had my tooth filled....but the dentist was a stupid, selfish, fat and lazy man. So he did a stupid job, he used cream color instead of white, when i asked him to change it, he said i should pay again.......The composite is still there, but its very ugly and misshaped.
Can you recommend a good place i can have it replaced. Thank you
Hello timi, you can always make your point without using vulgar words. If the person that managed you is a real dentist, he would not have used a cream colour against your wish. I am almost sure you are dealing with a quack, they are very common around. Why can't you go to UITH, they have specialists there who can give you a better care.

Yes I am. Sorry about that, some medical conditions can be that frustrating for the patient and doctor. However, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Why can't you come to LUTH if you are Lagos-based? It can be managed by the specialists.

I don't understand this fuss about Oral B it's not curing my teeth sensitivity. What's the best toothpaste anyway. This Sensodyne thing I'm using now, I can't even feel my teeth. Now I'm scared to brush with it
Are you having tooth sensitivity?

If that is the case, you do not have to use it brush your teeth. It is a therapeutic toothpaste, you have to apply it twice, usually in the morning and at night. Having brush your teeth with your normal toothpaste, not sensodyne, then apply a peanut-sized sensodyne paste over the sensitive tooth or teeth for few minutes, then wash it off.

HealthTop 10 Bizarre Phobias People Suffer From by IbnIbrahim(op): 9:47pm On Dec 26, 2017
1. Haphephobia
Haphephobia is the fear of being touched. This sounds like something from Comedy Central, but it’s a real phobia that people have. With haphephobia, human touch can be overpowering and even painful.
In some cases, the fear is specific to only one gender, while in others, the fear relates to all people. This is one type of phobia we consider to be very bizarre. Not only will someone who suffers from it live an unusual life, but it would be very difficult to deal with them

2. Ergophobia
Ergophobia is the fear of work. It is downright creepy that people suffer from this type of phobia.
Lorna Liebenberg is a self-confessed ergophobia sufferer. For 17 years, Lorna has hardly worked. Whenever she thinks of work, an overwhelming feeling of fear cripples her. Lorna’s case was so bad that she was always getting a new job, and with each new job, her fright increased. Despite the fact that she sometimes had good bosses who were like fathers to her, she still couldn’t help fearing the workplace environment. Unsurprisingly, she has struggled with great financial difficulty throughout her life. Of all phobias out there, ergophobia is one we do not want to hear about.

3. Neophobia

Neophobia is the fear of anything new, be they situations, places, or things. Neophobic people usually have problems with trying new gadgets, food, habits, or schedules. Societally, neophobia explains why ideas, inventions, fashions, morals, and other societal changes are often resisted despite their logical advantages. The most absurd reality of neophobia is that it is easy to see in retrospect, but it is harder to see where it might be having an effect on us right now.
One of the causes of neophobia is status quo bias. People are biased toward things as they are now and against changes. All the advances of the 19th century, which include national police forces, enlightenment, mass education, social regulation, law, economic organization, and industrialization, were all opposed by the majority of ill-educated masses, mostly for reasons we now understand as emotional but illogical. Food neophobia is one of the more common forms of the fear. According to research, making young children eat food they have not tried before could do them more harm than good. The study suggests that it could lead to youngsters growing to be anxious adults with low self-esteem. Neophobia is not only a bizarre phobia but one that can cause substantial harm.

4. Philophobia

Philophobia is the fear of falling in love. It is closely related with a previous traumatic experience involving love and relationships. If a person has had a past relationship failure such as divorce, it can cause philophobia. Philophobia can also be a result of an upbringing in which the person saw the ups and down of their parents’ relationships. Moreover, witnessing someone else go through the turmoil of relationships can cause a person to develop extreme anxiety about forming a loving bond.

As humans, positive emotional relationships are essential for us to thrive, both familiar and romantic ones. When a person expresses any kind of romantic interest in someone with philophobia, the sufferer tends to retreat and run in the opposite direction.

A philophobic person puts up a wall when he or she notices that someone is getting close. Generally, philophobia is restricted to romantic partners, but in certain cases, it can extend to family and friends. In such cases, a philophobia sufferer can completely withdraw into their shell. This can put both their physical health and mental health at stake. Several people who suffer from philophobia have made shocking public confessions of what it is like. These confessions paint a sordid picture. The only good news about the condition is that it can be treated. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure therapy are the most effective treatments for philophobia.

5. Ablutophobia

Ablutophobia is the fear of bathing, washing, and cleaning. It is a situation-specific phobia that is more common in women and children than men. The phobia manifests in different ways, from a fear of showering to a complete phobia of all washing.
Ablutophobia is most likely to be caused by unique or specific traumatic instances, which could relate to childhood accidents that involve water or abusive or neglectful parents who may have implemented water or bathing as punishment. In a bizarre case reported by several mainstream news outlets, a British teenager named Thomas Townsend met an untimely death due to ablutophobia. Townsend was using a large amount of deodorant to compensate for not bathing. He eventually died from inhalation of excess butane gas contained in the deodorant he used. His case is very saddening considering the fact that he was not a drug or alcohol addict. Ablutophobia can be treated by a mental health practitioner. The goal of any such expert is to first target the initial inciting factor that caused the person’s irrational and extreme fear.

Business5 Handy And 5 Hilarious Things You Can Buy For Your Business On Fiverr by IbnIbrahim(op): 10:50pm On Dec 23, 2017
As an entrepreneur, you’re probably facing many constraints, especially as you work day in and day out looking to grow and scale your business.

Ever wonder if there was a cheap yet accessible marketplace where freelancers from almost any field imaginable were made available to offer their services to you, all for $5 a project?

Well, look no further, all thanks to an online marketplace called Fiverr.

What is Fiverr?
what-is-Fiverr - Fiverr enables anyone to list what they'd do for $5 (the services are called "gigs"wink while giving anyone with $5 to spare the opportunity to purchase them.

We wanted to put ourselves in the shoes of a small business owner and see what we could purchase given a limited budget of $50 in hopes of highlighting its effectiveness as a legitimate resource for your business needs.

While it’s not difficult to navigate the site and start finding services, there are some general tips that will help you use Fiverr more effectively:

1. Look at the positive rating percentage and the number of votes to determine the seller’s popularity and how many people have used them in the past

2. Keep in mind the number of days on average it takes to deliver and how many orders the seller has in their queue to gauge how busy the seller is (Tip: if you need it sooner, you’ll encounter the “extras” where you’ll normally be able to pay a premium for faster delivery)

3. Make sure to read the comments section - that’s where you’ll see both the good and ugly and see if the seller is actually reliable and whether the quality of their services holds true.

Okay, so just what did we buy?

We bought a total of 10 individual services, five of which we thought were particularly handy when running a small business, and five which we thought were hilarious and buzzworthy purchases that would at least snag a small business some commentary on social media.

Here we go:

Five Handy Purchases

1. A Logo
Sometimes when you’re starting out, you don’t have the upfront pixel-perfectt in a polished, pixel perfect logo from one of your designer friends. You might also be tempted to use crowdsourcing services like 99designs or LogoTournament, but again, maybe even those are beyond your budget. Instead, a logo from fiverr will serve as a decent placeholder as you work your way up.

Here’s what we got after specifying the following to a seller on fiverr: “Please include the word Shopify, make it light green, and put in a shopping bag or cart.”

Instead of creating one logo, the user surprised us with two options in PNG with both clear and black backgrounds. Take a look:

2. A Video Homepage Review to Increase Conversion Rates

Optimizing your homepage to reach your conversion goals is no easy task, it’s both an art and science practised by designers and online marketers.

But getting access to one long enough even get a gut check on your site could cost a pretty penny. However, we were able to get a video review done by someone who claimed to be an expert expert (10+ years in the field) with some handy tips and pointers for the Shopify homepage.

[img]3. A SEO Optimized Blog Post
[/img]Content is king, but you need lots of it to get seen, with a premium on original, unique, and useful content geared towards your target market. We're always on the hunt for quality content for the Shopify blog, which is why we thought we'd test the waters and see if we could get a quality post written on a hot topic: “How Retailers Are Using Instagram to Connect with Their Customers”.

Read it and you can gauge the quality for yourself. It requires some rework (minor grammar, formatting, more examples, research etc.) but for $5, it's a start and something to work with.

4. Targeted Media List
PR can pay major dividends for your business in the form of brand awareness, getting people to talk about you, and most importantly getting people to your website.

However, working with a traditional PR firm doesn’t come cheap and can often run into tens of thousands of dollars a month. So, you’re probably looking at a more DIY approach at the beginning, but where do you start?

In any given vertical, you can have hundreds of publications, blogs, and other mediums. We went on fiverr and put the following request to a seller for a targeted media list:

“I work at an ecommerce platform and I’m interested in getting a targetted technology and entrepreneurship media list.”

In less than a day we received 482 names, beat, publications, email, and even phone numbers. Publications include All Things D, Ars Technica, Bloomberg, CNET, CNN, Giga Om, Huffington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Wired.

Our Head of PR, Mark Hayes crossed referenced some of the contact information provided with his own personal Rollodex at Shopify and although some of the beats were a little outdated, most were fairly accurate.

5. Facebook Timeline Page Image
With over a billion users on Facebook, you want to make sure that when people come to your company page they're greeted with a professional, trustworthy, and well designed cover image.

We commissioned this image to show how easy it can be to play in the big leagues. Not bad for $5 bucks. For more tips on optimizing your Facebook timeline page, check out this post.

Five Hilarious Purchases

1. A Rap Song
That’s right. On Fiverr, you can buy a few rhyming verses for your business and give yourself an extra leg up on the competition. (The other e-commerce stores selling what you sell probably don’t have 16 bars worth of branded rap).

We purchased a 40-second rap from fiverr and all we had to do was give these four lines of instructions:

1. Start selling online with Shopify (shopify.com)
2. Easily set-up a beautifully designed e-commerce store
3. Choose from over 100+ templates or create your own design
4. Get paid, start selling, live the dream and leave the rest to us

Needless to say, we were quite pleased with the end product. Word.

2. Short Message in the Froth of a Cappuccino
Who doesn’t like coffee? When we went with this seller, we got back nine variations with different angles and four different background colours. Yummy.

3. Speed Draw Graffiti of Your Company Name
Don’t tell me you’ve never wanted your company’s name speed written in graffiti, who wouldn’t?

We couldn’t resist ourselves.

4. Recording in an Incredible Movie Trailer Voice
The almighty trailer can excite audiences to get ramped up for an upcoming film and build up the hype to the point where someone will probably say they’re dying to see it. Now, you can do the same for your business.

5. Your Very Own Company Mascot
We like to call him Shopy, pretty cute no?

A mascot is the ultimate symbol of a company’s pride, glory, and the flame that keeps both the fans and players going, in this case the employees and customers.

Might be time you think of getting one made for your business.

Well there you have it, $50 well spent if you ask us. Have you used fiverr?

The last bolded paragraph makes a lot of sense.

Employers should not only emphasize on one's field of study alone...

And employees should strive to learn new skills everyday. Most of what we learnt in schools in the past are no longer relevant in today's world.

Whenever there is an opportunity to talk to undergraduate students, I emphasize soft skills. You can't just do without them.

Lesson Learn: Don't underestimate people
Unfortunately, most employers in Nigeria still underestimate their employees. They caged them. Presently, I know of someone working in one of the agencies, he has a Diploma in Computer engineering; he is a network administrator; has extensive practical experience in networking and a Bachelor degree in Business Administration. He is also Microsoft certified system administrator. Guess what they are using him forhuh

All across America, students are anxiously finishing their “What I Want To Be …” college application essays, advised to focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) by pundits and parents who insist that’s the only way to become workforce ready. But two recent studies of workplace success contradict the conventional wisdom about “hard skills.” Surprisingly, this research comes from the company most identified with the STEM-only approach: Google.

Sergey Brin and Larry Page, both brilliant computer scientists, founded their company on the conviction that only technologists can understand technology. Google originally set its hiring algorithms to sort for computer science students with top grades from elite science universities.

In 2013, Google decided to test its hiring hypothesis by crunching every bit and byte of hiring, firing, and promotion data accumulated since the company’s incorporation in 1998. Project Oxygen shocked everyone by concluding that, among the eight most important qualities of Google’s top employees, STEM expertise comes in dead last. The seven top characteristics of success at Google are all soft skills: being a good coach; communicating and listening well; possessing insights into others (including others different values and points of view); having empathy toward and being supportive of one’s colleagues; being a good critical thinker and problem solver; and being able to make connections across complex ideas.

Those traits sound more like what one gains as an English or theater major than as a programmer. Could it be that top Google employees were succeeding despite their technical training, not because of it? After bringing in anthropologists and ethnographers to dive even deeper into the data, the company enlarged its previous hiring practices to include humanities majors, artists, and even the MBAs that, initially, Brin and Page viewed with disdain.

Project Aristotle, a study released by Google this past spring, further supports the importance of soft skills even in high-tech environments. Project Aristotle analyzes data on inventive and productive teams. Google takes pride in its A-teams, assembled with top scientists, each with the most specialized knowledge and able to throw down one cutting-edge idea after another. Its data analysis revealed, however, that the company’s most important and productive new ideas come from B-teams comprised of employees who don’t always have to be the smartest people in the room.

Project Aristotle shows that the best teams at Google exhibit a range of soft skills: equality, generosity, curiosity toward the ideas of your teammates, empathy, and emotional intelligence. And topping the list: emotional safety. No bullying. To succeed, each and every team member must feel confident speaking up and making mistakes. They must know they are being heard.

Google’s studies concur with others trying to understand the secret of a great future employee. A recent survey of 260 employers by the nonprofit National Association of Colleges and Employers, which includes both small firms and behemoths like Chevron and IBM, also ranks communication skills in the top three most-sought after qualities by job recruiters. They prize both an ability to communicate with one’s workers and an aptitude for conveying the company’s product and mission outside the organization. Or take billionaire venture capitalist and “Shark Tank” TV personality Mark Cuban: He looks for philosophy majors when he’s investing in sharks most likely to succeed.

STEM skills are vital to the world we live in today, but technology alone, as Steve Jobs famously insisted, is not enough. We desperately need the expertise of those who are educated to the human, cultural, and social as well as the computational.

No student should be prevented from majoring in an area they love based on a false idea of what they need to succeed. Broad learning skills are the key to long-term, satisfying, productive careers. What helps you thrive in a changing world isn’t rocket science. It may just well be social science, and, yes, even the humanities and the arts that contribute to making you not just workforce ready but world ready.
