Politics / Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu: Ohanaeze President General Raises Alarm Over Death Threats by Ibrahimcoomasie: 4:07pm On May 09
The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has raised an alarm alleging that some Igbo people are out to destroy him for committing no crime except for being the President General of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation.

Iwuanyanwu said that the same people were responsible for the death of the late former President General, Prof George Obizor after they burnt his residence in Imo State.

According to him, Obizor died after his house and his academic works were burnt down.

He, however, vowed that the apex Igbo body had decided to deal decisively with those described as dissidents whom he said were working against Igbo interests and using the name of Ohanaeze to trade with some political harlots.

Briefing journalists late Wednesday evening at Ohanaeze’s National Secretariat in Enugu after a long hours of meeting of the National Executive Committee of the organisation, the President General, vowed that those charlatans would no longer be allowed to have their way anymore.

They tried to assassinate former President General Chief Nnia Nwodo and he was lucky he was not at home. They bombed his house. The same gang tried to assassinate late Chief George Obizor and when they could not get him directly, they burnt his residence. It was after the burning of his house and everything – his books that he died of the shock.

Every President of Ohanaeze they will try to assassinate and now they are trying to assassinate me for doing no wrong other than that I accepted to serve Ndigbo despite my age.

We are going to investigate the people who want to assassinate Nwodo, who killed Obiozor.”

Iwuanyanwu, however, warned that “if what is happening in Igbo land today is not nipped in the bud now, it is going to be very disastrous for Ndigbo in the future.”

The apex Igbo body insisted that there is no faction in Ohanaeze Ndigbo, saying only the Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu-led Ohanaeze Ndigbo that exists.

Iwuanyanwu stated that after the meeting of the NEC, the Igbo apex body decided to submit the names of the dissidents led by one Okechukwu Isiguzoro who parades himself as the Secretary General of Ohanaeze to Ime Obi, the highest decision-making body of Ohanaeze for necessary punishment.

According to Iwuanyanwu, their names would also be sent to all Igbo communities to be ostracised, while lamenting with pain the subversive activities of the group who he said were being driven by money had caused the Igbo Race.

Iwuanyanwu said he had a father called Isiguzoro and advised him, but he allegedly made demands of huge amounts to take care of his health.

He said “I promised to assist but still he did not stop issuing illegal statements to always counter Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s position on issues, just to confuse the public. He requested that Ohanaeze should give N50 million to go to Germany for medical treatment or he will continue to sabotage Ohanaeze’s activities.”

While he ruled out that the dissidents were being sponsored by some politicians because of their political interest, the President General explained that one Engr. Ibe who was working with them as the factional president general of Ohanaeze had come to him to tender an apology and professed his support to his administration while noting that he was no more with them.

Iwuanyanwu said that the most painful action taken by the dissidents was a rumour they circulated last week, accusing him of planning to go and beg the North for civil war.

“I have never visited Sokoto State in the past 30 years or so. I visited Sokoto last when I ran for the contested for president of Nigeria so many years ago. Such a thing was never contemplated or discussed at any Ohanaeze Ndigbo meeting,” while insisting that such would never happen.

He insisted that the 1966 military coup was not plotted by Igbo officers, rather an Igbo General stopped it, saying that Igbo deserve commendation for that.

“The coup of 1966 is a military affair and not an Igbo affair.

“Nigerians should beg the Igbo and not the Igbo to beg the north because we are the people gravely injured.”

Iwuanyanwu, however, announced that the NEC of Ohanaeze had decided to take the activities of the dissidents to Ime Obi to take drastic action because if they are not stopped now, they will destroy Igbo land.

Politics / Peter Obi Is Saddened & Shocked By The Deportation Of Osun Indigenes By Lagos by Ibrahimcoomasie: 8:35pm On May 06
I am deeply saddened and shocked by the recent reports of the deportation of citizens mostly of Osun State origin by Lagos State authorities. This is not merely a concern for Osun State but for all Nigerians who uphold the principles of unity, fairness, and justice.

I find this action very distasteful because of the far-reaching effects it will have on our National cohesion and development. As a pan-Nigerian advocate, I vehemently oppose any form of discrimination, injustice, or violation of our citizens' rights.

Every Nigerian, irrespective of their state of origin or place of residence, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Let us always remember that we are all Nigerians, united by a common destiny. And that it is our collective duty to uphold the values of unity, fairness, and justice, and to stand against any form of discrimination or injustice. Our constitution guarantees every Nigerian citizen the right to reside and find livelihood in any and every part of the federation.

I implore all Nigerians to remain calm and vigilant as we await the outcome of the investigation. Meanwhile, the security agencies in Osun State are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and well-being of the deported youths.

Together, let us strive for a Nigeria where every citizen is accorded dignity and respect, regardless of their background or place of origin or residence. A new and different Nigeria is indeed possible! Let us strive towards it in unity. -PO

Properties / Why I Lived Under Lagos Bridge – 75 Year Old Ghanaian (Picture) by Ibrahimcoomasie: 3:38pm On May 06
One of the displaced squatters of the 86 apartments under the Dolphin Estate Bridge, Ikoyi, Lagos, Usman Hassan, has spoken about his time in the squalid environment.

Daily Trust reports that the Lagos State Government had on Wednesday blown a cover of the under-bridge apartments where tenants reportedly paid N250,000 annual rent.

The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a video post via his social media account.

Wahab revealed that the 86 partitioned rooms, sized “10×10 and 12×10”. He added that the enforcement team of Lagos State’s Ministry of Environment and Water Resources had successfully removed all structures, including a container utilised for various illegal activities, from beneath the Dolphin Estate Bridge.

Sharing videos, the commissioner wrote, “18 individuals squatting illegally under the bridge leading from Dolphin Estate were arrested yesterday 30th of April, 2024 by the officials from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps. A total number of 86 rooms, partitioned into 10×10 and 12×10, and a container used for different illegal activities were discovered under the Dolphin Estate Bridge.

One of the displaced squatters, Hassan, a 75-year-old Ghanaian, said he was a teacher at Remo Divisional High School, Ogun State, before relocating to Lagos.

Also known as Baba Baraka, the Ghanaian said he was not around during the ‘attack’ by the Lagos officials and as such, he lost some of his belongings to the onslaught.

Telling a story behind the apartment, he told Daily Trust that “The man who owned the place doesn’t force people, the engineers working in this company (referring to a company around) begged him for their workers to stay nearby and when they need them for work, they’ll enter the place.

“I don’t know exactly how much he collects from them, but personally, he didn’t collect anything from me.

“For people paying, whether it’s N250,000 or not, I don’t know.”

He explained that people found a solace in the under-bridge apartments because “town is hard and they could not afford a rent within Lagos.”

Hassan said “You see, conditions are hard for people in the country and not everyone can afford houses in the town.

“I have been in this country since 1981 in Ogun State. I was a teacher at Remo Divisional High School for about 11 years before I came to Lagos.

No work in town to survive on. This man pitied my condition and gave me space here (under the bridge). So, when this thing happened, I took my belongings and I am going again.”

Asked what is the hope for the future, he responded “well, everything is in the hand of God. Sleeping under the bridge is dangerous, but the condition of the country made people resort to this.

As you are seeing me, I don’t have a dime in my pocket.”

Usena, a 12-year-old girl, from Kogi State, said her elder sister brought her from the village.

“She is paying but I don’t know the amount.

“I don’t really enjoy the place. I want a new house where I can stay with my parents in peace and enjoy ourselves. We had to stay under this bridge with my sister so we could raise money for a new house,” she told our correspondent.

Saheed Yusuf, a farmer, admitted that he paid an initial N40,000 and subsequently N20,000 quarterly to stay in the apartment.

Politics / EFCC List Of Ex-governors: Reno Omokri Slams Peter Obi and Obidients by Ibrahimcoomasie: 1:32am On May 06
Earlier today, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission dismissed as a tissue of lies a so-called list clearing Peter Obi of any corruption case. For the absence of doubt, the EFCC has a grand corruption investigation involving Peter Obi.

The extent that these guys will go in their propaganda would have Bern shocking to me, if I were not used to their lying ways.

And Obidients have been insulting me for the past two days because of a list that has turned out to be false. When will this Gbajue lifestyle end? Peter Obi, a man cited by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists in their Pandora Papers for allegedly criminally profiting while in public office, is the man they are trying to project as a saint.

If Bola Tinubu put Federal Government money in a bank he owned, Obidients would break the Internet. Yet, Peter Obi put Anambra's money in his own bank, Fidelity, and personally benefitted. If Obi were a former government official in South Africa, Europe or the Americas, he would be in jail.

Business / Opay, Palmpay, Others Warn Customers Against Crypto Trading by Ibrahimcoomasie: 7:12am On May 04
Nigerian fintech companies have warned their customers against trading in cryptocurrency or any virtual currency on their apps, threatening to block any accounts found engaging in such activities.

At least four fintechs—Opay, Moniepoint, PalmPay and Paga—have communicated this development to their customers on Friday.

Last week, the Central Bank of Nigeria stopped major fintech firms like Kuda, Opay, PalmPay and Moniepoint from onboarding new customers.

The CBN’s move was linked to an ongoing audit of the Know-Your-Customer process of the fintechs, which have been under scrutiny in recent months over concerns around money laundering and terrorism financing.

Before the CBN’s directive, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had obtained a court order to freeze at least 1,146 bank accounts owned by various individuals and companies allegedly involved in illegal foreign exchange transactions.

In a notice issued on Friday, OPay said it would take strict measures against customers who violate its policy, which aligns with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s stance on cryptocurrency trading.

“In compliance with the CBN directive, please note that OPay prohibits any cryptocurrency and all virtual currency trading. Any account engaging in such activities will be closed, and customer information will be shared with regulatory authorities.

“Please ensure that your account does not involve any cryptocurrency or any other virtual currency transaction,” the fintech firm warned.

In a similar move, Paga, a fintech firm that has processed transactions worth $32bn in 15 years of operation, said in an email to its customers, “As a Paga account holder, please ensure that your account is not used for crypto and virtual currency transactions. Paga accounts in violation of this regulation will be blocked,” it said.

PalmPay, another major player in an emailed statement said, “We strongly advise against using your PalmPay account for transactions involving cryptocurrencies or any other virtual assets.
Please be advised that failure to comply with these regulations may result in the suspension of your account.

“Our team is diligently working to ensure full compliance with all regulatory directives, prioritizing the stability and integrity of our platform,” the fintech stated.

On Thursday in Lagos, the founder and CEO of Moniepoint, Tosin Eniolorunda, called on cryptocurrency peer-to-peer (P2P) participants to halt their activities, citing the financial sector’s prohibition on such transactions.

“This is a self-reflection of our industry. As you know, fintech apps are used for fraud. One of the things that led to the most recent announcement is that crypto players were manipulating the naira, especially with the P2P market,”
he said.

Recently, key players in the fintech sector were summoned to Abuja for discussions on KYC protocols, underscoring the regulatory scrutiny facing the industry.

The apex bank had also crackdown on cryptocurrency exchange, Binance in February after being accused of manipulating the naira exchange rate.

Before Binance stopped operation, CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso said nothing less than $26bn was moved by unknown sources through Binance Nigeria in one year.

The CBN and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) announced a partnership to investigate and penalise those involved in illicit activities within the FX market.

Politics / David Umahi Likely To Be The Best Minister Of Works That Nigeria Has Ever Had by Ibrahimcoomasie: 8:14pm On May 02
Since this administration started, Engineer David Umahi has hit the ground running. The man Umahi is likely going to be the best Minister of Work the country has ever had, especially if he keeps up with the pace.

Multiple road projects are ongoing all over the country, even the ones previously abandoned. The first thing he did was to clear the debt owing contractors.

Aside the economic development this highway will bring along the 700km corridor, the coastal highway would also help to protect the Nigeria coastal line along the southern part of the country. It's good to have an Engineer as Minister of Works. Round pegs in round holes.

We well meaning Nigerians appreciate and wish him goodluck.

I, alongside Senator Tokunbo Abiru, visited the Minister of Works, Engineer Dave Umahi to express appreciation for the ongoing 34km Ikorodu-Itokin road reconstruction.

The road, originally built in 1975 under General Yakubu Gowon and General Mobolaji Johnson, is crucial for economic growth. Senator Abiru's motion in April 2021 emphasized the road's significance as a key access point linking various parts of the country.

We advocated for the dualisation of the road to enhance its capacity. Minister Umahi assured us that the design for the dualisation would commence soon. The current rehabilitation work has already improved travel along the corridor.

We also extended our thanks to HE President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his consistent support for road infrastructure projects nationwide.

Travel / Air Peace Plane Makes Emergency Landing At Lagos Airport by Ibrahimcoomasie: 7:54am On Apr 26
An Air Peace plane coming from Port Harcourt made an emergency landing at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, on Thursday after the pilots noticed a fire warning indicator in the cockpit.

The aircraft, which had 243 passengers and 12 crew members on board, landed safely at 4:45pm on Runway18L of the Lagos airport.

The pilots immediately shut down the engines of the aircraft after fire fighting personnel reportedly observed smoke on the engines.

The call sign of the aircraft is: APK7193.

Air Peace, in a statement, said it was later discovered that the fire warning noticed in the cockpit was false.

The statement was titled, “Notification of false fire alarm on Port Harcourt-Lagos flight.”

It read, “We wish to inform the flying public of an incident that occurred during our Port Harcourt-Lagos flight P47193 of today, April 25, 2024.

“Some minutes before landing, our Captain noticed a fire warning indicator in the cockpit. The pilots performed all safety precautionary measures, and the fire indicator went off. The Captain immediately notified our Operations Control Centre in Lagos at 17:37 hrs.

“It was determined upon landing that the alarm was falsely triggered as there was no fire event. The aircraft landed safely, and all passengers disembarked normally.

“We want to reassure the flying public that safety remains our utmost priority, and we are unwavering in our commitment to it.”

Politics / Traders Count Losses As Government Demolishes Shops, Houses In Ebonyi by Ibrahimcoomasie: 6:18am On Apr 25
Traders and landlords in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, are counting their losses following the demolition of shops and residential buildings along Ogoja Road and Vanco junction.

It was gathered that the government wanted to build a flyover at the popular Ogoja road and Vanco junction which led to the demolition.

However, traders and landlords that inhabit that area are lamenting bitterly over the level of damages and losses they have incurred over the sudden demolition, saying that they are stranded and don’t know what to do.

In an interview with some of the affected traders in the area who gave their names as Anayo and Chimezie lamented bitterly over the sudden demolition of their shops without any valid notice to that effect, saying that their goods were outside since they didn’t know where to pack them.

They further noted that no form of compensation had been given to them by the government, but only forms were submitted.

“It’s not as if we don’t like development, but this demolition affected me a lot because there was no single information nor notice given to us to vacate this place before this demolition.

“See how everybody is running helter skelter; some even sustained injury. We don’t even have a place to pack our goods. We are not happy at all.

Politics / Ministry Of Works Replies Critics of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway by Ibrahimcoomasie: 8:40am On Apr 24
Those Criticizing the Ongoing Lagos- Calabar Coastal Highway Project Being Done by The Renewed Hope Administration Of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Either Have Little Knowledge of the Concept of EPC+F On Project Financing Or Are Deliberately Sacrificing The Cause Of Development At The Altar Of Politics.

The trending posts of criticisms by some notable politicians on the propriety and priority of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project being executed by the Renewed Hope administration of His Excellency President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR are no doubt baseless thoughts of critics who are either bereft of the knowledge of the workings of the project initiative or they deliberately want to sacrifice the modest developmental efforts of Mr. President at the altar of their political ambitions.

It is unthinkable that such highly placed people fail to understand the various elucidations provided by the Honourable Minister of Works, His Excellency, Sen Engr Nweze David Umahi CON on when the project was conceptualized, the various administrations that attempted but failed to carry out the project, the economic and technical considerations that gave rise to the commencement of the project under the Renewed Hope administration, the funding and procurement details and indeed the dimensions, importance, priority and propriety of the projects in the national developmental trajectory.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Lagos- Calabar coastal highway project is being done under EPC +F. What does this type of funding entail? This is a project financing mechanism in which EPC+F contractors also arrange financing for the project. EPC+F is Engineering, Procurement and Construction plus Financing. Engineering here includes design and specification. This initiative provides a fixed price, fixed date, and transfers risks to the contractor. This type of funding requires only a counter- part funding from the Federal Government. Such funds are sourced by contractors where they have confidence in the economic policies of government, which essentially entails allowing the participation of the private sector in the road infrastructure development through PPP or EPC+F.

In the recent Inauguration of the Committee on Compensation of owners of properties that will be affected by section 1 of the Lagos- Calabar Coastal Highway, the Honourable Minister emphasized the nature of the project funding and the workings of EPC + F when he said, "And graciously, Mr. President had approved that this section three will start from Calabar, which is the end point of the project, and start running towards Akwa Ibom. So, the 700 km is procured under phase one, in phases, and it's EPC +F. EPC+F is engineering, procurement, construction, and finance. And so, under this kind of arrangement, the contractor is expected to bring in a certain amount of money, and Federal Government is expected to pay certain counterpart funding."

No patriotic Nigerian should discourage this kind of project where funding is substantially from the contractor. There is no doubt that Mr. President is aggressively tackling the backlogs of uncompleted road projects. In the 2023 Supplementary Budget, Mr. President approved funds for intervention on the over 260 dilapidated roads nationwide. The 2024 appropriation made provision for capital investment on our critical roads across the 6 Geo- political zones of Nigeria.

The Honourable Minister has already made a great difference in the road infrastructure development roadmap of this administration through his new innovations on road construction and rehabilitation, his power of supervision, and his contract negotiation power which is second to none in the history of the Federal Ministry of Works. He has been touring around and supervising the various ongoing projects of the federal government, and the difference is already there. The people are testifying of the quality and speed of road projects being executed by the Renewed Hope administration. He has proven track records on road infrastructure development. He is not into rhetorics like many politicians who talk high but can do only less. The administration of President Tinubu is doing roads that will stand the test of time. The roads he is fixing will facilitate economic recovery. The patriotic Nigerians are already applauding the good efforts of Mr. President, but professional politicians are busy criticizing a landmark project that will launch Nigeria into the league of the best economies of the continent.

On the importance of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project to the economy of the nation, it is clear that the coastal highway, when completed, will foster national economic growth. Notably,
all roads in the country are important as reflected by the interventions of this administration on road rehabilitation across the nation, but the coastal highway offers much more economic benefits to the nation because of its connectivity to the North and South through the existing spurs. The road, when completed, has the potential to increase Nigeria’s GDP and trigger industrialisation, create trade, enhance the transportation of goods and services, and safety of road users.

The road is going to be the biggest super highway in Africa in terms of the structure and solidity as we all as utility value, having ten lanes with a rail track designed for concrete technology, covering 700 kilometers. It is going to attract foreign direct investment to Nigeria, and it is going to trigger economic development. It is going to develop the potential of our coastal businesses, especially at the local economic corridors, and boost tourism and marine businesses.

Politics / Omokri's $10,000 Challenge: Obi's Supporters Can't Find School Built By Him by Ibrahimcoomasie: 12:19am On Apr 23
Supporters of former presidential candidate, Peter Obi have not been able to come up with one school started and completed by him in his eight years reign as Anambra Governor.

Reno Omokri, a former presidential spokesman had challenged Obi’s supporters, popularly known as ‘Obidients’ to name one school started, completed and finished by the former Anambra State governor in his eight years reign and he would give anyone who could name one $10,000.

Omokri took to his X handle on Monday to say that no Obidient supporter had been able to come up with one school built by the former governor.

“Ninety-six hours after I gave the challenge, nobody has been able to name one school that Peter Obi initiated, started, completed and finished in the eight years he was Governor of Anambra.

“Instead, they have responded with insults, abuses and threats. I can name multiple schools built by Local Government and LCDA Chairmen in Lagos.

“Now, please just name one school initiated, started, completed and commissioned by Peter Obi in Anambra and win ₦11,400,000,” he tweeted.
