Dumebi Kachikwu, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says he plans to ban public officials from sending their children to foreign schools or going for treatment abroad if given the mandate in 2023.

Mr Kachikwu said this on Monday in Abuja, when he briefed journalists on the content of his campaign manifesto.

He said the plans to transmit the draft bill of the Nigerian Patriot Act to the National Assembly in his first interface with lawmakers to restrict public officers from sending their children abroad as well as stop medical tourism abroad.

He said if elected as president, his first executive interface with the National Assembly will include a bill on Nigerian Patriot Act.

“It is a bill of equality and fairness. It is a bill that says we are all in this together. It will ensure that public servants cannot use the privileges they cannot provide to the common man.

“Anyone who desires to be in the public service must use the same services the masses use. No private or foreign schools for their families, no private or foreign hospitals for us or their families.

“There will be no generators or boreholes in our homes too so we can provide steady power and good water.

“If we desire efficient and effective education, healthcare, utilities, we must make it available to all so that we may all equally benefit from it. This is how we will build a nation that works for everyone,” he said.

The presidential candidate also said he would prioritise the use of the internet which he said was the highway of the future.

Recall that the town hall meeting hosted by the Arise News Channel in conjunction with the Center for Democracy and Development (CDD) in Abuja, was attended by three presidential candidates, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, NNPP’s Rabiu Kwankwaso and PRP’s Kola Abiola, while PDP’s Atiku Abubakar was represented by his running mate Ifeanyi Okowa.

Shortly after the town hall meeting began, a video of him at the birthday party of his associate, retired colonel Sani Bello, some 6.4 km (an eight-minute drive) from the venue, was shared online.

Spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress presidential campaign, Festus Keyamo, later released a statement, saying Tinubu can’t attend all events because he has a busy schedule.

The Federal Government had made it clear that it would sell or give some national assets to raise funds to finance the 2023 budget deficit of N10.78 trillion.

The Punch reports other ways the federal government is looking to raise revenue for the budget are through borrowing and project-specific loans.

President Muhammdu Buhari revealed the plan on Friday while presenting the Appropriation Bill of N20.51 trillion for 2023 to the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The budget includes N2.42 trillion in spending by government-owned enterprises. It is also about N3 trillion higher than the 2022 budget.

National Assets for sale in 2022 Earlier in the year the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) announced the sale or concession of 42 assets across the country. The Vanguard reports that some of the listed assets include the Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON) and Olorunsogo II Power Plant, among 42 transactions to be undertaken this year.

The transactions are 11 in the Energy Sector, 10 in the Industries and Services Sector, eight in the Agriculture and Natural Services Sector, and 13 in the Infrastructure and Public Private Partnership (IPPP) sector.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has regretted that his ministry could not completely eradicate the rising number of out-of-school children in the country after seven years as minister.

The minister, in his keynote address at the meeting of the National Council on Education on Thursday, blamed the rising figure on the “state governors’ lukewarm response to the suggestion for the declaration of an emergency on education, especially at the basic education level.”

The meeting of the National Council of Education, the highest decision-making body in the sector, began with technical sessions on Monday and continues until Friday with the theme: “Strengthening of Security and Safety in Nigerian Schools for the Achievement of Education 2030 Agenda”.

The minister said the choice of the theme is the prevailing security situation in the nation’s educational system “and the inevitable challenges it poses to the public and private sectors alike.”

He said the meeting would be an opportunity to “take stock of progress in the education sector, identify the challenges and consider policy options that will enable us move rapidly towards achieving our twin global agenda – Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Charter 2063.”

Out-of-School-Children
There were about 10.5 million out-of-school children in Nigeria in 2015 when Mr Adamu became Nigeria’s education minister, according to the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF).
