It was May, 1993. I can't remember the exact date. I heard on the radio that Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola would be in Oron Township Stadium, Akwa Ibom State, for the continuation of his campaign tour across the country. The stadium is less than 30 minutes walk from our family house. I was in primary four at the time. Without being immodest and with utmost humility, I was smart, very enlightened and had extreme political awareness far beyond my age. I would not miss Radio Nigeria Network News and NTA News. I always joined my uncle when he's listening to news while other kids were playing. Unfortunately, I don't remember if those network news exist again because I don't listen to them anymore. One day, I overheard people saying Nigeria's major problems would soon end when Abiola becomes President. I knew a bit about him already, we had his campaign posters and a bag of rice with his face embossed on it at home. I was curious to know more about the man they were all saying nice things about. The announcer on radio said Abiola would be coming around 1pm on the said date. At about 11am, I disappeared and went to the stadium. When I arrived at the gate, the soldiers stopped me and asked where I was going. I was by far the smallest and the only kid, not accompanied by an adult, who went to the stadium by himself! I boldly told them I came to cheer and support our next President Chief Abiola. They were a bit surprised but were moved by my confidence. They later allowed me in. It was on a weekday. There was no public holiday but curiously, almost all shops and businesses were voluntarily shut by the owners. The stadium was completely filled up with people. A chopper supposedly carrying Chief Abiola arrived but he wasn't inside although he later left on the chopper when he was going. Moment later, sirens, loud noise and large convoy of vehicles were heard outside the stadium. He arrived. I finally saw him from a far distance on an open vehicle. He was standing, raising his two fingers on both hands up. Immediately, they started playing the below jingles on the public address system: "Abiola na de man oo! SDP na de party oo! Na him wey we dey oo! For better tomorrow! Abiola!! Abiola!!! Action!!! SDP! SDP!! SDP!!! Progress!!! Nigeria on the march again: on the march again Looking for Mr President: on the march again M.K.O oo...is our man oo" and others A huge crowd were singing and dancing. Even as an adult, I have never witnessed something like that again on a campaign ground. Chai... People were so happy as if they were in heaven. When Abiola was about leaving, one of the soldiers took me close to his chopper so I could have a clear view of him. I can never forget it |
tim1256:IBB hands were tied. I'm not supporting him o because he's a criminal. Some guys in the military were not comfortable having Abiola as president. Abiola's issues not becoming president had both internal and external dimensions but unfortunately Nigerians don't know these. Abiola had once visited Fidel Castro. Again, he boldly said the West would pay reparation for the slave trade era when he became president and he would pursue it relentlessly. You should be able to decode where majority of his problems came from |
Paperwhite:Funny enough, I was in primary 4 then but had political awareness more than even some higher institutions students! I was by far the smallest and the only kid who went to the stadium by himself! The stadium is close to our house sha.Oron Township stadium in Akwa Ibom State. When I arrived the gate, the soldiers stopped me and asked where I was going, I told them I came to cheer and support our next President Chief MKO Abiola, they all bust into laughter and were surprised at my confidence. They allowed me in. When MKO arrived, they took me close to his chopper so I could have a clear view of him |
a Paperwhite:Hmmmm... There was another one they sang in the stadium when we went to receive him. Before MKO arrived the stadium, we started dancing to the tune and the song goes like this: "Nigeria on the march again...on the march again... we are waiting for Mr President...on the march again... MKOoooo...is our man o... " Mehn, when MKO arrived the the stadium, Nigerians were so happy as if we were in heaven, chai... I've never witnessed something like that again and can never forget it |
Fabiyi my boss I sight you. You shouldn't have bothered replying that double-mouthed Sagay because his days are numbered. May God bless our incoming President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar
|
Whether Mr Atiku visits America or not is inconsequential. My vote is for Atiku. Bmc can go and die with their propaganda |
dy79:You don't reply pm, how then does one sends CV to you? |
feelgoodstuffs:I think I'm done being patriotic with nothing to show for it Bros abeg, show ur guy the way on how to move down there |
dy79:Bros I read Engineering. I can teach Mathematics but since it's Primary level, I don't have any problem teaching other subjects as well because I have taught in primary school before |
Thank you National Assembly. The presidential election must always come last. That's how it's supposed to be |
LOM1:I will wait and read the full report before I comment in detail. The current Local Government structure should be scrapped and each State allowed to create as many LGAs as they want and manage it according to resources available to them. States Should control their resources and pay taxes /royalties to the Central Government. Any State that's not viable should merge. If these are not included in the report that means the report is useless |
We are still demanding for a live media chat. I don't understand why this thread is not giving the needed attention |
Newbiee:..."people need to be enlightened on the process made..." The process that Buhari's daughter and, esp his wife, that sleeps on the same bed with him do not know? So you know Buhari more than Aisha Buhari. smh |
I will be a big fool to waste my precious time to listen to any media program that has to do with this useless govt run by utterly incompetent President |
seunmsg:If he's indeed a criminal, why is your new sheriff in town allowing him to walk free? Show us empirical evidence that he's a criminal or forever remain silent |
Welcome Alhaji Atiku. The good people of SW and majority of Nigerians are solidly behind you. 2019 is Atiku year |
SalamRushdie:We need him here then to tell us what is going on |
SalamRushdie:Who's GravelSlam? Is he a member of President's media team? |
freeze001:As important as this is, I'm surprised people don't care |
Since this administration began more than two years ago, three years in four months time, there has been only one Presidential Media Chat by President Muhammadu Buhari, and that was before he embarked on medical leave abroad. This is quite different from what we are used to since the advent of democracy in 1999. The live media chat affords the citizens the opportunity to ask Mr President direct questions, clarify issues and generally make contributions in every area that affects the well-being of our people. During OBJ regime and most recently GEJ's, the live Presidential Media Chat was a regular exercise and some of us were always delighted and looked forward to that day. Majority of Nigerians, irrespective of party affiliations, seem to agree that, there are a lot of things happening around us that require Mr President's direct response. Democracies around the world and even countries not practicing direct democracy often have their Heads of State talk to the people regularly. This is quite different from Press Releases by media aides. As a matter of fact , a President owes the nation regular communication. So, when is the next presidential media chat? |
NgeneUkwenu: |
onexile:When your time arrives, nobody can stop you. This is Atiku's time and one million Lauretta Anochie can't stop him. Nigerians will decide |
mrphysics:Woman wey sleep on the same bed with the man tell u codedly that the man na failure, u still say he isn't. Mr BMC, was the interview granted the BBC by that rare breed of a woman called Aisha also hacked? |
This is the second time this rare breed of a woman is publicly and stylishly telling Nigerians that Buhari is a bad product which Nigeria should discard. A woman that sleeps on the same bed with the man. Despite this, one still sees people supporting this failure of a man called Buhari. It's unfortunate |
