My cry everyday is for the rain to start fully. I have not be able to plant cucumber since January. I secured(lease) 2 acres of land closs to river to early January but after clearing, I discover that the land is very strong. Strong in the sense that red sand was heap on the land during road construction and the bulldozers compressed the sand so hard. So, the land is now very difficult for shovel to penetrate.
Seeing the challenge, I decided to look out for land elsewhere and I got one but not close to river. I have been waiting for rain to start so I can plant but the rain is not coming forth. I can't drill borehole because it is too expensive here. 250,000 for only borehole. Even if I do, Chiefs will pull out the engine inside because the place is in the forest. Please experts, I need your advice.

Everything is set for the great cucumber challenge, the seeds of the two contenders are down and materials to kickstart the project is down, foliar fertilizer, nematicide, insecticide, and fungicide,we will apply manure tomorrow and plant,it will be an interesting and educative few weeks I will assure you,the people from East West seed co are begging for video updates,we will make a short documentary about the whole process to prove beyond reasonable doubt what happened and it will be available for any serious farmer that will need it on WhatsApp,we initially wanted to use drip irrigation but the rains are coming in hard and fast,so no need,we will definitely need that for our dry season projects, after this fray between monalisa and cu 999,the next brawl will be a three way contest between green go,Murano 2f1 and mydas ,now this mydas cucumber variety is a relatively new kid on the block but an interesting variety none the less, with it's ability to produce only female flowers and set fruit without pollination it is a strong Challenger, the Dutch guy at riijk zawaan said if it doesn't produce 15 fruits per crop,he will eat his hat, hmm!!now that's a bet I will see through, some seed co are even hinting to donate their seed for the heavyweight fight, but after careful consideration we politely declined,we will get normal seeds from normal dealers not some super bioengineered seed, this first two variety contest will be seriously captivating, but the next fight between 3 of the very best, simply it will be breathtaking sight!!
Great move!
So, how will you tackle water challenge? The rainfall is not much for now.

you can't plant on the flat ground, the rainy season is coming, you have to do ridges for good drainage.
Thanks I appreciate!

getting ready to stake our 2500 cucumbers, some areas have old stakes in place,so we are doing about 60% of the land, bamboos are down @40 naira per bamboo,1 mean worker from ebonyi state cut 80 pieces in 1 day,I wonder what we could have done without the strong men from abakiliki,
Sir I am trying to study this picture. The ridges or tillages are not too obvious. Can I plant on flat ground without ridge nor tillage?
Anyway I am just looking for possible ways to reduce expenses. @ Okoroemeka
Good morning and have a blessed day!

chicken manure has more percentage of nutrients in it,that's why if not applied correct burns crops, but pig manure has lower percentage of NPK in it,so if you want to use pig manure u have to increase the quantity, were u use chicken manure 1 kg,you will use pig manure 3-4 kg..and pls disregard the WORM issue it's mere fabrication of an imaginative mind without base or substance.
Noted sir!
Thanks
Agriculture / Re: 500,000 Naira From One Plot Of Land In 90 Days. by Idemujoseph: 7:57am On Apr 22
Mr Emeka sir, from your experience, is poultry manure better than pig manure? I ask because I came across pig manure at affordable price. But some persons are saying that pig manure has worn in it which might not be healthy to human health.
What do you advice sir?
Good morning!

Degis:
Did you spray any herbicide especially the systemic variant whose effect last 7 days before planting?

Did you spray the chemical and planted immediately after it?

It may not be the birds, it may be your herbicide that killed your seeds or the seeds had expired. This is my humble submission because birds can’t possibly dig up seeds from the ground that spanned 42 plots of land except African Magic don enta the mata
I did not spray anything.
What made me fear is that other people farm in that area are not affected and we planted the same time.
Secondly, even the ones that manage to germinate are still uprooted and destroy. That is why I call them strange bird.

Agriculture / Strange Birds Ate Up 7 Acres Maize Farm! Please Help by Idemujoseph: 10:09am On Apr 03
I planted maize on about 7 acres last 3 weeks but the entire farm has been eating up by some strange birds. They brought out the seeds from the hole and ate them. I have really spent huge amount of money in that farm.
I am not going to give up, so I want to plant again. How do I prevent this misfortune?

Oga emeka, I like your input as a farmer sir, I read your comments on another thread about planting 4000cucumber on two plots, please what is the spacing required to achieve this using raised beds, and how long should the beds be in order to use 100 long bamboos as you said, plus if I'm getting chicken manure, how do I use it in order not to burn my crops(hope you are not annoyed by my questions) and what's your take on greengo seeds
Annoyed? That is not possible with a humble man like Mr Emeka. I have been following him since last year and he has never withhold useful info from us. God bless Okoroemeka!!!

Hybrids varieties are fast-growing, high yielding, and disease-resistant but you must first and foremost put into consideration what planting season you intend to plant; early season planting varieties differs from what is recommended for late season planting. And, like a friend advised me, also go for varieties accepted in your locality (market).

on pesticides? yes, you would have to deal with that (I only do organic but that will pose an issue if you are thinking large scale farming). Most issues are pest related though.
thanks
