horsepower102: You still don’t get it. Igbo women are free to marry whom they fall in love with. I just don’t support it with groups that hate or wish so much evil against the igbos.
There are so many igbophobic groups that want to marry igbo women. Yorubas are known for that.
I have no problem with igbo women marrying ibibios or Efiks and similar groups. They don’t have a history of wishing us evil.
You can’t hate and antagonize us yet come the next day to marry from us. Even here on Nairaland, some of the biggest tribalist are married to igbo women. Edo is included in this. Yoruba are not necessarily Igbophobic they are just scared , disturbed, intimidated by the surging Igbo financial boom in their land....I mean , who wouldn't ? They are troubled they might wake up one day and their land will become Igbo owned. The people who really hate Igbo are SS Igbo. |

NaijirianKing: Are you saying inter tribal marriages are sick and disgraceful?
If so, you would have to speak to the Igbo women who are engaging in such. Here, we merely lay out the facts and analyze what effect they will or will not have on Igbo Empowerment.
In regards to Igbo Empowerment, inter tribal marriage can be a good thing if:
1. It's done in small numbers, meaning less than 2.5% of Igbo girls marry outside, and
2. Those who do marry outside, only marry the top 10% income earners and wealth holders of the group from which they are marrying
This is the standard whites use before they allow their daughters to marry outside of their ethnic group or race. This will ensure that there is a proper socioeconomic trade off.
Please explain yourself more so that we fully understand, are you saying the number should be 0% inter tribal marriages? And if so, how would you enforce such a ban?
The reality is that it will happen, so we should have parameters for how it should be done. In my opinion, if you're going to do it, do it like Chioma, who married into a billionaire family thus ensuring her family will benefit from such a decision. I hate inter tribal marriage but its meant to happen but what matters is the extent. Most of these Igbo women married to Yoruba are mostly Lagos based ones who never learned Igbo culture. And , no Igbo women are not known to cater to men , so , they will not be bringing any wealth to Igbo land. How many did Stella Damascus brought ? |

Most Igbo girls consider Igbo language mgbekeish...they give their children white names out of inferiority complex and never speak our language. This is the reason why I push for a strong consciousness of our various sub tribes.
Most Igbo women married to Yoruba have no respect for Igbo culture...if you say to her Nne, kee ka imelu she replies you with huh! |

How does your comment even make any sense?
What is your agenda? Voicing your displeasure at the events of Igbo girls marrying Yoruba men sort of portray you as a weakling. Like you couldn't compete with them and now you are being a sore loser. We have more important and desperate needs that needs our attention. Meanwhile , the percentage of Igbo girls married to Yoruba men is not even up to a tenth of 1% of Igbo women. You shouldn't lose sleep over that. Moreover, most of those Igbo girls married to Yoruba men are rotten eggs...mostly gold diggers who can bed anything. Didn't an Onicha woman who was vastly educated settled for an Atiku Abubakar and became his 3rd wife just because of money....these women have no shame. |

NaijirianKing: If we can control it, then it may be used as a good thing. For example, when a Black American male obtains fame or vast sums of money, White fathers have no problem with their daughters marrying them.
This is because by marrying them, they're obtaining the resources of that wealthy male and transferring the resources to their family. For example Michael Jordan has a white wife, and when he passes away, his fortune will go to his wife and her white family.
To an extent, Igbo women generally only marry Yoruba men of means, or they stick with Igbo men. This may be a good thing, in limited numbers as a way to transfer wealth from the men to the family of the women.
What are your thoughts? This is a sick and disgraceful suggestion. Within Igbo there is discrimination....in the 80s Anambra parents frown at their children marrying particularly from Imo. Fix your home , firstly |
Culture › Re: What Is Igbo by IDENNAA(m): 12:11pm On Jan 29, 2020 |
I didn't know that many Ukwunzu people regarded themselves as Igbo.
Also Nri-Awka isn't/wasn't an ethnic group. It is more of a modern geo-cultural term used only in academic circles, and doesn't connote the type of ethnic and kinship consciousness that exists for (say) Ezza or Uratta.
I agree largely with you though. But I'm not sure I agree that the linguistic connection is the only thing that defines Igboness. If it were, the branches of the Ibani-Ijo group that speak a variant of Igbo as a first language would be an Igbo 'ethnic group' too. But no serious scholar regards them as Igbo, largely on cultural grounds. This suggests to me that Igbo 'panethnicity' or 'meta-ethnicity' could have some cultural basis, which is extremely hard to define given the great bewildering cultural heterogeneity of the Igbo-speaking area.
So far, I have identified two cultural 'emblems' which I think are pan-Igbo.
1. The Ofo/Ovo/Ovbo/Owho as a rituo-political symbol. 2. Ajoku/Njoku/Ifejioku etc as the divinity of yams. (I didn't include some more apparent ones such as the four-day week because we share those with our neighbours and it isn't clear yet whether it is a common legacy we share with our neighbours or a borrowed heritage, and because some peripheral Igbo groups such as the Izii have a different market/week system)
There could be others.
But, yea, linguistic affinity remains by far the most important single criterion for 'Igboness'.
PS: Your theory on the semantic history of the word 'Igbo' is...well, debatable. The four market days were originally shrines in Anambra. That's why we say eke bia taa orji , oye taa orji , ana taa orji etc. Lack of written record has undermined our history |

Some through the South west direction, some through the Kogi direction, and some through the Cross River direction. Then we had cross migration within ourselves, blending and mixing until we became who we are today.
Igalas are our neighbors, just as Ogonis, Edos, Ikwerres, Ekoi, Ibibios and Annangs are. Just neighbors who we intermarried with and had other economic interactions with. Nothing more and nothing less. Those people don't see us as anything but as neighbours, we must start seeing them as same, if we at all wish to grow strong again.
