In my many years working at a cyber cafe in the heart of Lagos, i have had many people from different walks of life especially the elderly folks walk into my Cafe in view of typing the requirement their prospective son in-laws is to pay for the hands of their daughter in marriage. For more news visit www.wefollowinone..com I probably shouldn't be telling you guys this, but the stuff is this: this old folks Papas and Mamas seems so friendly that they try to explain to me why they charge each amount for each item and they relate it to the history of their village. i wont forget a memorable event there was this particular daddy from Delta state, from his looks he would be probably in his 70s dressed in a short nicker and a polo and wearing a hat and holding a walking stick with a shiny white boot and with a smile.then he handed me a list still smiling and while i was typing he was just telling me the origin of the various items.
I travelled to Lagos on saturday, dec 28 2013. On our way, our car spoilt because the fan belt cut. This was in Delta state, right there in Ika land at Ekwuoma communtiy. Being a first time visitor to Ikaland(I've passed before severally, usually while travelling), I decided to walk around a little. I looked for where to buy credit and I walked up to 3 people sitting down under a shade(a woman and 2 men) and I asked in Igbo where to buy a card and they all replied me in igbo willingly and directed me to where I could get it. I got there and there was this old woman who was talking to her grandchild in Ika and I understood her 100% because it sounded almost like general anambra dialect. And the grandson(about 18/19 years old) was replying her in 'Ika' which I also understood. Its personal experiences like this that make me find it difficult to believe half-baked lies and untruths that some people would rather peddle here. Truth be told, ika is a dialect of the Igbo/Igboid family. However, the people may choose to see themselves as distinct from Igbo. Fine. Americans are not English but yet speak the language of the English, which is English. Yet, Americans recognize their British ancestry and revere the British adorably. Language and ethnicity must not always be the same, but in most cases they are - the English people speak English, the French people speak French, the Hispanic speak Spanish, the Zulu speak Zulu, the Igbo speak Igbo etc. Two languages are regarded different languages when both of them are distinct from each other with very little or no commonalities between both. The average ika speaker understands central Igbo and can speak it effortlessly, and vice versa. Under language, Ika is an Igbo dialect.
Your story is cooked up. our Aniocha and Ukwani neighbours dont understand Ika language 100% talk more of you, that day being ur first encounter with an Ika and also being an Easterner. except maybe the woman in question is an Aniocha immigrant since Ekuoma shares boundary with Aniocha land. |
macof: @fulaman how much Hausa people are really fluent with English? I haven't met much.yea, it's true. only a very few Hausas speak english fluently, but among those few, their accent is very pleasant, having a kinda resemblance with Ghana accent eg. they pronounce towel as tawel and so on. |
olisaokere: YES or did you think it migrated from BINII have always thot it to be Igbo but I read somewhere that it's origin is not known |
Fulaman198: It's a dialect of Igbo languageI don't know why you people are so obsessed with Ika people? We are the Ika speakers and we say it's a language, and that's it. If Itsekiri can be a language, why not Ika too? |
iconize: Ika na language?Yes, Ika na language. Hope dat answers your question? |
According to Igbodefender.com,the Aniomas are the Igbos whom the Yorubas say were pre-existing in Ile Ife when they first came there. The Aniomas are Igbos.
Does that make sense to you. |
Sonya you went through all this lenght to give this wonderful history which I really enjoyed...But I must say your thinking faculties are a little backward and rather immature. Why are you breaking arteries all in the bid not to be called Igbo even furnishing us with examples. Food for thought your being Igbo, Ika whatever does not increase petrol value in black market so why does it bother you so and why are you irritating us with your shallow problem. My advice is stick to objectivity and stop being subjective like a sophomore school girl.....*a heart felt advice no hard feelings*
Why are your brothers breaking arteries just for us to be Igbos. |
olisaokere: Where this one from come again?Omugwo no get name for Ika abi bini?Is Omuguo an igbo word? just curios |
It's called Ofara in Ika language |
Did you not see the link i posted up there? If you did,you wouldnt say ika culture is pure bini
If you know Ika culture, ranging from Kingship, Chieftancy titles, dressing, music, dance, worldview, etc. and you are truthful, you will admit that we have more similarities with Benin than Igbo apart from language which is very dynamic. |
Hello everyone, fellow Ika-ite here. How y'all doing? I've been doing some research on the Ika, including the different towns (Agbor, Owa, Igbakin). Our language is very similar to Esan in Edo state and I see the igbo words in Ika as a modern addition. Languages evolve (look at English) all the time. Nice to be here www.alizarene.blogspo.com
I have observed that too. Ika language is closer to Esan than Bini but our culture is pure Bini |
well an igbo man will always be an igbo man.....at least the delta igbos recognize that they are igbos.....if they think the other tribes like ijaws and itsekiri would accept them then they have another thing coming....that's why the urohbos would alwat hold sway
you must be dreaming. better wake up. |
revolt: his illlustrative analysis of the aforementioned is brain draining and lacks rationality. I don't knw how the dude finks! we've agreed he's not igbo! So he shul drop our cultural affiliations, but e no gree ...... He's a negro claimin white! Remember Samuel l Jackson in djangoi'm not comparing Ika with Tiv but only pointing out how entirely diferent ethnic groups are lumped together in one umbrella out of ignorance. It doesnt matter if some ignorant people see us as Igbo, cos there are lots of many unbiased and knowledgeable people out there that know the difference between Igbo and Ika and I have met many, even igbos are among them |
revolt: bia my deluded brother you are def not igbo, just don't drag the rest of nwafors in anioma wif u! Any TIv tht leaves his Tiv name and spks hausa and bears a hausa name has bcome assimilated into hausa. As long as u refused to drop our names and culture yet deny the identity ure esatz igbo. Is it by force to maintain igbo culture(tht u so hate) go edo plsss lve other pure nwafors alone. Agbota... Hasn't answered my question where Nzeogwu (that caused our greatest pogroms) was from.point of correction, among all the northern tribes, it's only the Idomas and Tivs that don't speak hausa in their communities. Any Tiv person speaking hausa must've learned it outside, just as Igbo man speaking hausa too. Secondly, they don't bear hausa names neither are they assimilated by hausa in any way. People call them hausa just because they are from northern nigeria. They now accept the hausa tag not becos they like it, but becos they know that no matter how they tried to prove they are not hausa the people will not change their stance becos they have already made up their mind that they are hausa, so they pretend they dont mind, but they do mind. That is how it is with some Ikas that do not say they are not Igbo when people say they are Igbos. |
I'm not suprised that the Igbos are claiming Ika because they have the reputation of claiming anything good, even people that dont have anything to do with Igbo for example Igbos said that the name Dangote is the corrupt form of Di anyi gote. I have also heard them say Obama is a corrupt form of an Igbo word Mbama. But what I dont understand is why they are not mounting as much pressure on Ikweres as they do on Anioma. As an Ika man, what people see me as is not as important as what I see my self as. People see Tiv people as Hausa, despite the fact that they are Christians and dont speak hausa. A lot of Tivs are in my hometown doing menial jobs. Everybody calls them Hausas, they tried their best to tell people that they are not Hausa to no avail, now they gladly answer it anyday. Did that change the fact that they are not Hausa? |
revolt: I've seen some deltans deny their igbo lineages, its crazy to hear an emeka say he isn't igbo, that he's delta! I fink its pure dumb! Anyways agb.. Says the Ika(as he calls it) fought against their kith n kin merely because they were igbo, not based on justice or rationality. They are the saboteurs. They'd rather support the fulani tht had massacred we all togeda than their brothers because of some stupid identity crises. If ure nt igbo den drop ur igbo names and cultures. Afterall some of una even changed ur names to ishan names. I dnt get y nwafors are even arguing wif these esatz igbos! Its nt by force naaaaaDon't forget that the same person answering emeka has an Edo surname and a brother bearing Edo name and his other name is probably Edo. So, if your argument is anything to go by, that means the person is also Edo. Bulsht. On the Biafran war thing, the Igbos caused the hatred Hausas show them. Imagine going to an aboki's shop and calling him an ewu and malu malu in his own town, he will definitely hate you. Ikas woud've remained neutral, but therer's no sitting on the fence in a war of that magnitude. Igbos are hardworking people, but they are very annoying and irationally proud. Nobody is jealous of you, there's no reason to, but people are bored with your arrogance. |

Red - ododo white - ofefe/ochan black - oji brown - ufie all in Ika language |
@ngodiga If you say there are no igbo denials Aniocha/Oshimili and that a little denial in Ika and Ndokwa, that means you are either blind or deluded. What will you gain in coming on the internet to claim you have won a battle you havent even started? |
igbo boy: igbo acceptance hahahaha,,, come and tell my grandma for village say she no be igbo. abeg according to terry g - ChopChickenAndDieunfortunately (for you), Okowa is more popular in Aniocha/Oshimili than anywhere else in Anioma land. |
igbo boy: you have started lying again.. Asaba and no part of oshimili land can say they are not igbo..We know who we are so biko face ikaAnioma is not an ethnic group but made up of closely-related ethnic groups, but, they can be called an ethnic group same way you call Igbo an ethnic group. Though, there are more Igbo acceptance in Oshimili, especialy (Asaba/Ibuza)than any other Anioma area, there are many peopl from this places (I gave the estimated percentage) that are either convinced they are not Igbos or are indifferent. Many Oshimili elites are pro-anioma, while the politicians that have the intention of going federal or those that think the Igbos wil support the state creation have no other option than to accept and urge others to becos of the igbo population. |
GENDER EQUALITY. |
Is this the same man they is a Phd holder? |
It's only about 30% of Asaba, Ibusa and Ogwashi Uku that say they are Igbo while another 30% are convinced they are not igbo. The remaining % are indifferent. As am typing this comment am in Asaba and many of my friends in Asaba are from Aniocha/Oshimili and many of them say they are not igbo. You say we should stop speaking for Ika, while you are speaking for Asab/Ogwashi. Infact, I have seen and read many interviews granted some Aniocha/Oshimili elite, some say they are igbo while some say they are not; some are not even happy with Uwechue. So, while generalise that all Aniocha/Oshimili accept they are igbos. I knw that Anioma has some level of affinity with Igbo but that doesnt mean we are Igbos. |
Igbos are great liars. I wil not believe Obi of Akumazi is in Ohaneze until I see the evidence. Even if he is, it's not a big deal except that nobody can be in Ohaneze and Onu Ika at the same time, becos you are either Igbo or Ika. But that doesnt mean That we do not have any relationshp with igbo, I view the Igbos as the cousins of Ika and to some extent Anioma. |
tonychristopher: you have been warned and told to talk about your damn confused self not for entire delta igbo they aint as stupid and confused as you are. They got pure blood unlike you son of run away felonmust you insult or abuse anytime you comment? |
I said something about the controversy sorrounding what make one language different from its near neigbor. I used Flemish and dutch and maybe afrikaans as an example. All these languages are recognised as different languages, yet they inteligible to one anoda. What about Norwegian, Swedish and Danish that are very close to one another, yet they are refered to as distinct languages. But on the other hand Chinese that is called a language is infact many languages, for a man from let's say Canton can't converse with another from, say, Shanghai. You see! the linguists themselves are confused |
DerideGull: I guess you were the only eye witness still walking the surface of the earth when the poeple of Aniomas made it clear that they are not igbo. It is said stupidity can not be fixed. It shows with the above post.it's your father and mother that is stupid. Anioma people have always made it clear that they are not igbos. All those places you are mentioning in Edo state are of Ika stock; most of them are bilingua. Some speak Ika and Bini while some speak Ika and Ishan. They can only accept the Ika tag, and Anioma too; they can neva accept igbo |
What make you think, if Anioma state were to be created tomorow, that it will join the SE. Aniomas have made it clear that they are not igbos. I advise you people to create anothe SE state from the existing ones, in order to avoid being betrayed. Cos even if Anioma state was eventualy created with Igbo support, they will never join the SE. |
olisaokere: Oh Boy,i think you are the one who is paranoid and suffering from Inferiority complex.I mean it is written all over you.Your speeches, write ups and all. Please just shut your trap boy!The truth is bitter. |
