I had seen the picture, since you are not thinking of aerating the system, I would encourage that each tanks has its on inflow source for water. The reasons are the first tank closest to the water/the first ponds getting the supply of water will be at an advantage. I HAVE DONE IT SOMETIMES,BUT REASON WAS ESSENTIALLY BECAUSE OF WATER CHALLENGE. I keep the smallest fishes closest to the water source and arrange it in that sequence to the biggest. Alternatively I use the water from fingerlings/juveniles to service the bigger ones instead of flushing it out.

Another issue is the case of disease, if it breaks out in one, with such a design, it could easily affect the whole stock. Best they are stand alone system and it would help to be able to diagnose challenges of each tank as a unit.

Also to avoid possible stress that might occur when changing water. Provided you have good water source, I wont recommend it and if you don't have good water supply, get one before starting.

With good water management, its makes you to be at an advantage, less disease i.e. even if any, your fishes eat well and growth will be better.
In polluted environment fishes get sick, or even die and that isn't good for business.

All the best and not buy more than your funds can feed adequately. Remember that it is always good to start small and get your own personal experience to decide the next stage you can successfully handle.

10 By 10 should do the work, but if you notice that the ponds or soil type isn't the ones that gives fresh water , increase it to 12 by 12. Worst soil scenerio increase it. Note: we are about entering or in rainy season,hence understand the land topography so your ponds doesn't overflow

As you have said the method you are conversant about is removing the male sperm, and stitch it back, and the male will eventually die, try and come for the seminar to have full knowledge about it, no need of removing the sperm, the male won't die, and the chance of getting more sperm is large.

You need to make use of coppens at least for 1 and a half month

Please note that floxinor is just a kind of antibiotics to prevent them from illness or sicknss so to say.


You must also avoid excess salt because it will reduce the weight of fish since salt itself is medicinal in nature.


Above all, stop using short cut in rearing fish otherwise u will see short cut at selling point. Use the right formula and see the power of right formula. Just my two cents.

Sorry for the problem you're passing through, there is this combination i use to treat any kind of bacterials/viruses(any sickness i mean) in birds,it works like a magic. But it is a pity i cant share it here, it is my secrete.

Now if you don't feed your fish regularly they will not grow .. And u should know the size of feed you give to them at the right time.. Feeding should be three times a day but at the third month feed them twice a day while ate the last month u full feed once a day..

At the third month farmers tend to switch to local feed and they sort for a good local feed... Back then I used local feed, I had a good combination but I found out that most of the ingredient are adultarated, especially the fish meal.. And fish meal is the main ingredient to produce a good feed and for rapid growth.. Some farmers include blood meal but I bet that majority of the so called blood meal are not they are sometimes burnt tyre.. I know right now u may be wandering but yes that's the truth..Pardon me to use broken english abeg "dis my leg don waka because of this feed formulation wetin I see na only God know" Am not saying there aint no good ingredient out there but most of them are fake, and u feed your fish and realise that they don't grow as expected..

So I stopped using local feed and
I deviced a method that after three month I switch to VITAL feed.. If u compare the cost of vital feed and the local feed we spend time and energy on its not that big.. And truthfully vital feed is not an imported feed it is made here in nigeria so to me vital feed is also a local feed.. Some farmers may say we do local feed to reduce cost and I laugh at their ignorance.. It is better to go straight to the point than cutting corners and whereby you may still be cheated on the local feed.. When u have a good fish its better you feed them with quality to harvest quality..

CHANGE YOUR WATER
I have been to farms where the water is so polluted and stinks.. I wonder how such farmers reason.. Its just like putting 20 people in a single room and u shut the door and window what do u think will happen over time..

If u don't change the water as at when due the enviroment of the fishes will be too polluted to encourage good feeding.. The fishes urine,faeces and dissolve excess feed pollute the water and they wount eat well or digest the food because of polluted enviroment..

@jam04 now i am confused about your post and also about cat fish farming. i was surprised to see your post saying very sensible post to someone feeding fish maggots from poultry and piggery waste here, but its other way round on your own thread. I am not trying to be negative here,i have done fish farming before and i am sure i am still a learner, i did somethings wrong then, i acquired some marshy land lately which i am planning to use for fish farm, and that is why i am on Nairaland looking for a way to do it right this time. @jam04 why is feeding maggots to catfish is not allowed on your own thread and its other way round here?

Cattle fattening, my strategy.
There are two basic method of cattle fattening. 1, getting wean calves and feeding them over a period of 12 months to achieve desire body weight or getting mature bull with low body weight and feeding it to desire body weight.
My strategy involves getting weaned calves, during the peak of dry season, in the far north, kastina state, sokoto state, taraba state; this is around March /April. There are a lot of cattle markets in this areas mention , bulls are cheapest in this time of the year, there are a lot of lorries and buyers transporting cows to various location in the country .a trailer can carry about 45 young bulls and transport to any part of the country is not more than N120,000. For a buyer with just 5 to 10 calves, you can join your stock to a buyer going his directions. There levies and few taxes to pay in transit, so every buyer should be aware. A calf will not cost more than N25000 during this time. I bought once in taraba state for N20, 000 per calf.
Please note, you should have stored silage or hay and a good source of constant water, a fence secure area before buying your calves..
When you purchase your bulls and have arrived your location, deworn them and give them a basic antibiotics treatment, feed them daily with your silage or hay, give them enough water to drink. The target daily weight gain is 0.5kg, the aim is to achieve desire market weight before December, and there is a good market then. The idea is to sell it directly to different groups, societies and cooperatives around your location for end of year festivities. It will not be difficult to sell during this period. Each of your bulls will be selling for nothing less than N90,000

Please I want you to clarify something for me. Is it true that Catle/Bull won't get fat if you don't walk them around ?

Excellent posts here and I must say, you guys are really superb, please I want to get some clarification, is PKC same as the palm kernel fiber we get from palm oil extraction? This is because I have a palm oil mill and I want to diversify into piggery, already acquired the land (in Ogun state, very close to Nestle flowergate factory, cos of feed) and am using this platform as my to-do guide.
Please help with what PKC means in layman's term. Plus I will appreciate information on pitfalls to avoid while embarking on this investment.
I will like to inquire about the possibility of having some experience in this before going into it real time, any connection to piggery owners?

Are you thinking that it is only snails you will just waste such a land for just in the name SEMI INTENSIVE system...
Semi intensive system is a simple system where you want to mimic the natural habitat of those snails on a demarcated free range with planting of their feeds and likewise incorporating their artificially made feeds.
Semi intensive =Free range with demarcated post+your monitoring.
Do you know what it is called multiple land used system ( it mean using a piece of land with more than one purposes)........it goes like this
You plant arable crops and tree, shrubs and other shaded plant for the snail.
Plants to be planted most be their feeds such as
Pawpaw
Cassava
Moringa tree,
Cocoa yam
Tridax procubens
Amaranths
Maize
Banana
plantain and other choice of your plants.
And the planted crops can be harvested after reaching the harvesting point and your snails still continues flourish and grow. You will get incomes in two fold snails and arable crops without affecting the snails.Thanks Dyoung forester
