Nairaland / General / 29th July 1966: Why Ironsi Was Killed by ifetex1: 1:42am On Jul 29, 2023
In the early hours of 15th January 1966, some Nigerian army officers, Majors Ifeajuna, Ademoyega, Anuforo, Chukwuka, Okafor, Onwuatuegwu and their leader, Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu staged a coup d'etat code named operation 'Damisa' which took the lives of prime minister, Tafawa Belawa, premier of the Northern region, Ahmadu Bello, Finance minister, Okotie-Ebo, Premier of Western region, Sir Akintola. Others who were victims of the putsch are senior Army officers like Brigadier Zakariya Maimalari, Lt Col Yakubu Pam, Lt Col Abogo Largema, Col Kur Mohammed, Brigadier Samuel Ademulegun and Col Ralph Sodeinde.

While this elite politicians and senior army officers lost their lives in the coup, with the North having more of the casualties, the coup failed in the Eastern region with no politician killed there. It gave the impression that it was an 'Igbo' coup.

The Coup brought to power the first Army head of state in Nigeria in the person of General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi Ironsi. He mounted the saddle of leadership after the coup failed and the plotters rounded up in Lagos, while Nzeogwu was tricked to Lagos from Kaduna and got arrested. The officers and their co-cospirators numbering up to 31 were clamped into Kirikiri maximum prison in Apapa area of Lagos.

There was a kind of melancholy in the North after this coup and among army officers of Northern extraction with the death of their prominent politicians and senior army officers especially Sardauna of Sokoto. The main misgivings they had against Ironsi was the promulgation of decree 34 on May 24th 1966 which ushered-in the unitary system of government and abolishing regional system of governments. The belief in the North was that Ironsi was scheming to inflict permanent Igbo domination on the Nigerian entity by concentrating POWER to the centre.

He was accused of surrounding himself with only Igbo permanent secretaries he appointed who misadvised him. He promoted only Igbo army officers. All these in preparation of the said Igbo dominance. They also said Ironsi was privy to the coup, even participated, as a result of this, could not bring himself to discipline the perpetrators.

Ironsi denied all these as the whispers and rumours always gets back to him. He tried to balance appointments.

Of the four ADCs that he had, two were from the North. Lt Sanni Bello(Army ADC) and Asp Timothy Pam (Police ADC). Lt Nelson Okulaja (Naval ADC) was from Western region, while his air force ADC, Lt Andrew Nwankwo was Igbo.

As the rumours continued to fly, Ironsi appealed for calm and understanding, but on May 29th 1966 spontaneous riots broke out in the North with shouts of 'ARABA'. Many Southerners and Igbos was the target. Ironsi called Hassan Katsina the Military governor of Northern region to do everything to quell the riots. He also made efforts to appeal to Northern elites, of which he invited first, Sir Kashim Shettima to government house in Lagos to explain things and appeal to him to use his influence in the North to calm the riots, but Sir Kashim left without being satisfied with Ironsi's explaination of events of January 15 where he lost his bosom friend and political.ally, Ahmadu Bello.

Another Northern elite Ironsi reached out to, even sending government aircraft to bring him to Lagos was Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sir Abubakar 111, whom he personally met at Ikeja airport to welcome him.

General Aguiyi-Ironsi himself decided to embark on a national-wide tour to appeal to soldiers and generality of Nigerians and to address traditional rulers for co-operation. He toured Kaduna, Kano Zaria, Abeokuta. But when he toured Lagos and addressed Nigerian Police at Obalende, on July 13th 1966 he said the Military governors are to start six months tenure in office and rotate to another region to foster unity amongst the Military establishment. This irked the North more, cos they can't bear to see an Ejoor or Ojukwu rule them in the North or their own Hassan Katsina taking a risk of going down to Eastern province to rule after what happened in January.

On July 26th, Ironsi toured Midwest for two days before moving to Ibadan to address National conference of traditional rulers comprising , Emirs, Obas and Ezes. This took place in the morning of 28th. After the speech he left for Mayflower school Ikenne, to return back to Mapo hall in the evening for a party organised for the Traditional rulers by Westen region government.

After the party, General Ironsi and Col Fajuyi retired to government house in Agodi area of Ibadan.

At 0030 hours in early morning of 29th, Ironsi's air force ADC received a call at the government house Informing him that about five officers of Abeokuta garrison has been shot dead thirty minutes earlier and all, is of Eastern extraction. This information was also passed to the General who was awake now and tried to contact his army chief of staff, Gowon by telephone in Lagos without success. As he tried to get some top military brass by telephone, they were told that the mutineers were on their way to Ibadan from Abeokuta.

Meanwhile, by 0060 the government house was aready surrounded by Soldiers from near-by 4th battalion Ibadan led by Lt Theophilus Danjuma. After what seemed like eternity with every domestic staff in the government house and all the security officers who came down one by one to access the situation being arrested by Soldiers, Lt Danjuma tricked Ironsi's ADC to take him upstairs where they first arrested Col Fajuyi and tied him with a cut telephone wire.

They met General Aguiyi-Ironsi in the parlour and the following dialogue ensued between him and Danjuma. Ironsi:

What do you want? Danjuma: You are under arrest Sir, you organised the killing of our brother officers in January and you have done nothing to bring the so-called dissidents to justice because you're part and parcel of the whole thing.

After this exchange, the gun welding junior officers collected Ironsi's pistol and his stuffed crocodile swagger stick and led him downstairs in a waiting Landrover with Fajuyi. Other arrested persons were packed in a truck and all were driven to the Jalupon area of Iwo road in Ibadan were Fajuyi and Ironsi was beaten mercilessly and shot. The other arrested detainees were driven back to Ibadan after long hours in the bush.

The ring leaders of the counter-coup were, Lt Murtala Mohammed, Lt Joe Akahan, Major Martins Adamu, Lt Garba Paiko, Lt J. I Onoja, Lt Ibrahim Bako and Danjuma.

General Aguiyi-Ironsi and Col Fajuyi was buried in a shallow grave near a stream at Iwo road. Their bodies were exhumed after one week and re-buried at University college cemetery Ibadan. Ironsi's body was exhumed again and given a final and state burial on 20th January 1967.

North voted Jonathan against Buhari, voted obasanjo against Buhari, voted mko against tafa.. The whole Nigeria were suppose to reject Jonathan except nepotist.
So what are you saying?

----------------------------------------------------------------
Which North voted Jonathan against Buhari? Do you know history at all? It was the 12 million Northern votes Buhari got against Jonathan in 2011 election that propelled the greediness in Tinubu of going to meet him for CPC/ACN merger for the second time so that Buhari win in 2015 and hand over to him in 2023, irrespective of whether Buhari will scatter the country or not, just come and hand over to me after your tenure

Now I know why Buhari said he would not reveal the name of his preferred candidate so that he will not be eliminated. I think he remembered what happened to Funso Williams in 1999 and knew that the suspect was among the presidential aspirants and doesn't want a repeat of that gruesome killing. Politics / Re: Buhari To Meet APC Presidential Aspirants, Reveal Preferred Candidate Sunday by ifetex1: 9:15am On Jun 04, 2022
This shows that Nigeria doesn't practice democracy. If not , why should a president say he has a preferred candidate and was even pushing for consensus. Why can't their party conduct a free and fair primaries without selection or consensus? Though I know he's doing this to checkmate those who are hoping to monetize or dollarise the primaries to win the ticket but it's still not how democracy is practiced. The aspirants that are comprised of governors and former governors brought this to themselves anyway, by always handpicking and selecting local government chairmen, councillors and their successors in their respective states. Now Buhari has capitalsed on that to give the aspirants a dose of their own medicine. But it's still not right. When will Nigeria borrow a leaf from America or UK ways of democracy!

The only governor that consistently challenged the federal powers in his era as governor. The man who took the FG to court and made sure he created LCDAs to make government closer to people which is what many states copied now. A forward thinker

You're a dindinrin. Umaru Dikko was also a money bag and a sponsor of NPN. Besides, it was the same Abiola that allegedly torpedoed the 2nd Republic in collusion with IBB, Gusau, Idiagbon, and others. At least, Abiola's stoic defense of his mandate paved the way for Obj in 1999. What do we say of Ibos who have never produced an elected president

-----------------------------------------------------------------

See childish argument, did you make any point with this nonsense you wrote? Simple question, do Nigerians owe Tinubu anything for bringing Buhari in 2015 or did he deserve stoning instead! When a child talks you would know. What brought Igbo into this discuss, or just to show your illiteracy? And who told you Umaru Dikko was a money bag? Mumu, Dikko was just a minister for transport under Shagari. He embezzled a lot of money and ran to UK which prompted Buhari who was head of state then to spark a diplomatic row with UK as he forcefully tried to bring Umaru Dikko back to Nigeria with the help of Israeli agents through Nigerian airways to come and answer corrupt charges against him here. You are a baby Agbero, so you know nothing that happened in the second republic! Abiola was the sole financer of NPN with little help from Ishaku Rabiu a Kano business man, yet Abiola didn't demand that he must rule Nigeria by force as Tinubu your papa is doing. He wants to come and turn Nigeria to Lagos where he has made Agberos kings who can perpetrate violence anytime. I guess that's what you want, God forbid, Tueeeeh! Go and Mark my words today, Tinubu and Atiku can never rule Nigeria.
Politics / Re: 2023 Election: APC’s Gamble With Jonathan by ifetex1: 8:29pm On May 28, 2022
Apart from the fact that you're a Tinubu supporter or sympathisers, how old were you in 1983 when Umaru Dikko told Abiola through radio Kaduna that the presidency is not for sale!! Abiola got the message and retired from politics. If you're talking of what Tinubu have spent in APC, it's not anything near what Abiola spent for NPN in that second republic.
The Northern power brokers have their own way of playing politics when it comes to crunch and one of the remanants of that Kaduna mafia then is still much alive in the person of Mamman Daura. If you think the presidency is Tinubu's entitlement or compensation for foisting Buhari on Nigerians then you don't have he moral justification to castigate Jonathan for wanting to contest.Tinubu was in the forefront of the many propaganda the APC manufactured in 2014 through Lai Mohammed to remove Jonathan in 2015, so it will be good to serve him a dose of his own medicine provided Jonathan contesting rumour is true cos karma is real.

Politics / Re: Imo: Ugonna Ozurigbo Dumps APC For PDP, Seeks Second Term by ifetex1: 11:10am On Apr 25, 2022
The truth of the matter is that Ugonna Ozuruigbo is originally a PDP member and won election into house of assembly in 2011 on platform of the party. He defected to APGA after Rochas Okorocha won governorship election in that party and also defected with him to Apc in 2013. Fast forward to the present, since the structure of Apc in the state has fallen into Uzodinma's hand Ozuruigbo knows that he can not win primaries in Apc for his re-election so his smart defection back to PDP. It is left for the party to see if the can give him ticket.

Politics / Re: Why APC Sacrificed Governor Bindow In Adamawa by ifetex1: 5:28am On Mar 31, 2019
All the people commenting on this trend Nobody have gotten the fact. The truth is Apc have been in tatters in adamawa since Oshomole and his NWC staged a charade of a primaries that produced Bindow to go for a second term! Since then the party have not known peace. Nyako left with his son Abdul laziz to ADC where he got their ticket to contests for the governorship and also Halilu the man they call Modi felt he won the primaries. So tell me in this situation how Will the tide favour Bindow? Coupled with the fact that adamawa was a Pdp state before Nyako converted it to Apc state before his impeachment in 2014 and if you check, all the Pdp states that their governors converted to Apc state during the Tinubu onslaught in 2014 have gone back to Pdp from Rivers to Sokoto and others besides there was the Atiku factor in Adamawa no matter how you try you can't wish that away. And pray , tell me if Apc wants to loose a state to punish a governor will it be to their main opposition Pdp? They lost an election and should stop given excuses. They should rather worry about 2023 when the Almajiris will not see a Buhari who champions their Jihadist tendencies the main reason they vote for him Will not be there anymore. That should be the worry of Apc right now not Bindow who is gone.

Stop abusing English grammar

Problem with some of you guys is that you lack good reasoning because of blind followership. You will only have respect and admiration for Tambuwal if you know how Pdp was painted in the North especially in the mosques as party of infidels prior to 2015 elections because of Jonathan.
So for Tambuwal to decamp to that same party and win even with his mentor Wammako still pulling the trings in Apc? What can God not do? He will remove Apc at the center for US. This God!

Why not defend the allegatiIon of Tinubu's former cso as CP of kwara than resorting to now tired and broken songi n the ear of looting? If Apc trusted themselves that they have performed and the masses are behind them as they claim why all these last minute tactics. First was Amina Zakari then placing a sharia judge as CJN and now hurriedly posting preferred police cps in states so they would do their bidding like Idris Ibrahim did in kano in 2015. And let me ask, why is Apc afraid of international community and observers to the extent of threatening to kill? So that they will not come and witness the atrocity they want to commit on February 16th like they did in osun abi? Hmmm... And do Apc know other song than looting or corruption? Shame on these guys. God is watching!!

Will Agbaje sit inside his house and win election? where and where have you seen his posters? Rather everywhere you go in lagos whether in lekki or Ajah or Egbeda you will be confronted with posters or giant billboard of Sanwo- Olu that I began to ask if Pdp and Agbaje are serious about taken lagos or are they just jokers?
