Some Hausa girls are in Harem, the others are mostly allergic to social life. Some Yoruba girls are also in Harem, others want to be professors and the rest are too fat to play footie. They are also obedient and may decide not to play because Baba said so. Igbo girls are tough with independent mind. There are no religious restrictions on them, they can disobey their parents and play footie. They are naturally stubborn and are daily playing the role of men in the society. This is evident in the Aba women riot (1929?), and the way some Igbo women beat up their husbands.

i wonder if these political systems can be relevant now
Did u notice the writer somehow concentrated @ Onicha?
Those things are very much still relevant and upheld in Onicha,i dunno abt other parts of Igboland.
@PhysicsQED,Movement to the top is NOT open and free for everyone in the whole of
igboland. There are certain criteria or status one gets to before one wud qualify for any status eg in Onicha the "Obi" status is rotated btwn certain families within the 4 royal vilages. Its not contestableor open for discussion!
In Arochukwu, there is an age grade or society for only those above 90,no amt of money or fame can get u there and it goes on and on.
Chain of power(Onicha):
Obi
Onowu(prime minister)
Ndi ichie(ume,agbalanze,okwa and okwaraeze)
Ndi Ozo.
Village heads.
Diokpa(family heads)
Nne muo na ndi gbara odu(women only).

Binis are more linked to the Yorubas when u look at the cultural pratices btwn the 2 groups.IMO
I have however heard the story of Eze Chima (Onicha) migrating from Bini. The Obi of Onitsha and Oba of Bini attires and regalia are almost same.

kieryn:
My good friend addresses his step father as Mazi Obi or Obi. He says he has a father in his life and there need to give that title to anyone. Beside calling him "Uncle" would be weird since his mom is married to him.

For those of you that have step-dads and step-moms what name do you call them?
lol@ Mazi Obi.
I dont have either step mum or dad but i know i do sometimes address my parents, mum esp by their first names. What gives??as long as he/she accords the step dad the respect he desires and the old man isnt complaining.

@Topic,as much as possible,i try not to interfere but when there is domestic violence or assault i DO interfere. When married friends share a problem with me,i tell them what i think is the best for them but always encourage them to do what they think is right/best for them.
So far,i havent had a need to seek for 3rd party"s counsel,im seeing it remaining that way,Insha Allah.

lol @ Thread.
I remember having a friend who happens to be a daughter of a one time Guv,then i ofcos did not know who she was.Unfortunately too, that same period, teachers were on strike cos of unpaid salaries and my mum was a teacher.
So,this babe came to take me out,she was driving and i was bored so i started talking abt politicians, teachers and all.LOL,i was so mad,was cussing and dissing the gov,his family and children. shocked
This babe, cudnt take it anymore, next thing i noticed, she swerved off the road and was in tears. When i asked her what was wrong with her,she was like . ."how wud i feel if someone sits in my car and right at my face be cursing and dissing my whole family for a sin of their dad" lol
Long of story was,she claimed she did not know teachers Salo was unpaid and promised to talk with her dad.
I think most of them have no idea of what life really is,some others might know but they are just indifferent.

I came across this very beautiful surat this morning and thought of sharing:

"He it is who created you from dust, then from spermdrop, then from clot, then he brings you out as an infant, then causes you to grow into full maturity and then causes you to grow further so that you may reach old age while some of you he recalls earlier. All this in order that you may reach an appointed term and that you may understand the truth. He it is that gives life and causes death.Whenever he decress a thing,he only commands to it "BE" and IT IS."
