Crime › Sacked TRACE Staff Attempts Suicide Over N50,000 Debt (photo) by ijustdey(op): 5:30pm On Aug 27, 2017

Security operatives in Ogun have arrested a man who allegedly attempted to commit suicide over his inability to refund a N50,000 ‘loan.

The man was arrested by the Anti-Vandal Team of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ogun Command, while he was trying to hang himself in a bush on Ayetoro Road, Abeokuta.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that the man had tied a rope to a tree and was about hanging himself when a member of the NSCDC team saw him.

The man, a 34-year old father of five, later told newsmen that he worked with Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) in Ogun but was sacked.

He explained that his inability to perform his responsibility as the head of the family led him to attempt suicide.

He added that his failure to pay the ‘loan from LAPO, a private micro-credit lending organisation, forced him to take the decision to take his life.

“I am a 200 level drop-out of Federal College of Education, Osiele, I dropped out because I could not get financial assistance to continue.

“Due to the health problem of my child in 2008, I had to drop out so that I could have some money to take care of my sick child.

“But, we later lost the child in 2009 because we were unable to pay some hospital bills after people had helped us in raising money for the surgery.

“I was duped by some people and they even threatened me which made me to leave Abeokuta for Akwa-Ibom state.

‘’It was when I came back after a year that I discovered I had been sacked from TRACE.

“I am frustrated because am owing a lot of people ranging from house bill to electricity bill and some other bills.

‘’I am ashamed of myself because am not a responsible man, I cannot cater for my family as a head.

“The LAPO officials have used OPC (Odua Peoples Congress) to arrest my wife because of the money, if not for the help of my pastor.

”Am just frustrated because I have to pay N3,000 every Friday and I am presently jobless. And I still have like N24,000 to balance .

“What added to my conclusion to commit suicide was due to my inability to refund the ‘LAPO’ loan I collected when I wanted to start my tricycle business.

”The officials of the LAPO have been giving my family tough times for sometimes now because, I cannot afford to be repaying N3,000 every Friday,” he said.

He, however, said he regretted his action and wanted a second chance in life.

“I wish to go back to school; I want the government to help me with a job that can cater for my family and other things that are important,” the man said.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of NSCDC, Ogbonnaya Dyke described it as a crime against the state for someone to try to take his life.

Dyke added that the suspect would be handed over to the police, after the NSCDC Intelligence Unit had concluded its work.

“Since the matter is under our Crisis Management Team, we have to swing into action to address the situation.

”Necessary actions will be taken by the Corps in addressing the situation. He is going to be handed over to the police after our intelligence Unit has done its work,” he said.

Politics › Medical Tourism Draining Nigeria’s Reserves – Osinbajo by ijustdey(op): 8:47pm On Aug 24, 2017
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has decried the enormous amount of money Nigerians spend on medical tourism in other countries.

He made this known on Thursday in an opening remark at the commencement of a two-day national health dialogue organised by the Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism, PTCIJ, the Project for Advocacy in Child and Family Health, PACFaH, and the Project Pink Blue.

The event held at the Musa Yar’adua Centre in Abuja.

The health dialogue was chaired by the vice president, and hosted by the Minister for Health, Isaac Adewole.

The Emir of Kano and former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Muhammadu Sanusi II; acting Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance scheme, Attahiru Ibrahim; the DG of the National Agency for the Control of Aids, NACA, Sani Aliyu; the executive director, Nigeria Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Faisal Shuaib, were among keynote speakers at the health dialogue.

In his speech, Mr. Osinbajo, represented by the director general, Voice of Nigeria, Osita Okechukwu, said medical tourism has cost Nigeria billions of dollars.

“We want to stop that trend because it is draining our reserves,” he said.

Thousands of Nigerians travel abroad each year to seek medical treatment as the nation’s health care system remains poorly funded.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday returned from London after nearly four months of medical leave.

The administration has not disclosed the president’s condition or how much is spent treating him, but analysts estimate Nigeria spends several millions of naira for the president’s healthcare abroad.

Mr. Osinbajo said healthcare for Nigerians is important to the Buhari administration.

He explained that the president was interested in health issues, but said poverty was also a major issue to look at.

He urged the states to also join in so as to ensure universal health coverage in the country.

Family › My Lord, I Have Two Husbands, Can I Divorce One? - Woman Asks Ibadan Court by ijustdey(op): 2:01pm On Aug 22, 2017
A middle aged woman married to two husbands in Ibadan has gotten the leave of a Customary Court to divorce one of the husbands .

The woman , Modinat Mufutau , on Tuesday told an Idi -Ogungun Customary Court , Agodi in Ibadan how she alternated two husbands in order to satisfy herself and get enough money to take care of her three children .

Modinat had begged the court to dissolve her 12 years relationship to one of her husbands , Ajadi Mufutau , for alleged lack of care and maltreatment .

She told the court that she met Mufutau in 2005 , and he impregnated her without marriage formalities.

The petitioner said that at the beginning of the relationship Mufutau pretended to be a nice and responsible man.

“ But when he impregnated me , he began maltreating and beating me whenever I demanded money for antenatal care.

“ I left his house after delivery and hooked up with another man , Saheed , who impregnated me two years later but turned me into a punching bag after delivery of my second child for him .

“ Later, I settled down with Mufutau , got pregnant for him again , but Saheed , who I have the second child for begged me to continue with him.

“ I decided to date two of them without any problem until they met each other in my rented apartment and fought.

“ My Lord , I have made up my mind to divorce Mufutau because he had stopped giving me money for the maintenance of the two kids I had for him since he fought his rival , Saheed , in my apartment, ” Modinat said .

Mufutau did not contest the petition for dissolution .

He said , “Modinat is a shameless woman. I was not aware that she still dates Saheed until I met him in the apartment I rented for her and she did not see anything bad in her action.

“ I just pray the court to allow the first child be in my custody so that I can properly take care of the child and I promise to support her for the care of my second child , ” Mufutau said .

President of the court , Chief Mukaila Balogun, and the court’ s assessors , Aare Samotu and Ganiyu Alao, agreed and dissolved the union .

The court awarded the custody of their first child to the respondent and the second child to the petitioner .

Balogun ordered Mufutau to pay N3,500 as monthly allowance for the upkeep of the second child and warned both parties against fomenting trouble .

Crime › Nurse Stabs Husband To Death In Lagos by ijustdey(op): 9:13pm On Aug 21, 2017
An auxiliary nurse, Mrs. Folashade Idoko, has been accused of stabbing her husband to death in Lagos.

The incident occurred on Sunday at their residence located at 20, Kosoko Street, Ayetoro, Oto-Awori local government area of the state.

The Nation gathered that the deceased had suffered years of domestic violence from his wife but kept quiet.

The couple had two children – a three-year-old boy and one-year old girl.

Neighbours and their landlord confirmed the several years of domestic abuse the 32-year-old Lawrence Idoko suffered from his wife.

A source said Sunday’s attack was triggered by jealousy from the nurse, who accused her husband of infidelity.

The source said the deceased, a pipeline engineer with Greater Inspection and Industrial Services at Sango-Otta, Ogun State, was away on official assignment for a week at Ikorodu.

She said: “He returned and his wife accused him of having extra-marital affair. She stabbed him in the leg with a sharp knife. When his three-year-old son’s cries alerted neighbours, he had bled heavily. He died about an hour after he was rushed to a nearby New Ayetoro Medical Centre.”

But Mrs. Idoko, a native of Kwara State, who has been arrested by policemen at Ijaniki, claimed the knife fell on her husband by accident.

A neighbour, Mrs. Blessing Olokpobri, who expressed sadness over the man’s death, confirmed the woman’s bad treatment of her deceased husband.

“Their history of violence was known to everybody in the neighbourhood. Even on January 1, they fought. There was a time she went to drag him and stripped him naked from a beer parlour around here and beat up an elderly neighbour. There was even a time she sliced his ear lobes with a broken bottle and it had to be stitched,” she said.

The deceased’s landlord, Chief Gani Akanni, who rushed him to the hospital, said he issued a quit notice to the couple because of their incessant fights but changed his mind after other tenants pleaded on their behalf.

Akanni, who’s the Balogun of Ayetoro, said: “There was a time I took the woman to the police station because she vandalised my property after I locked up the tenants’ rooms for defaulting in payment of Lagos Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) bills. She went ahead to break the door. It was unfortunate because the husband is such a quiet and peaceful man.”

Idoko’s aunt confirmed his death, describing it as unfortunate.

She said: It was unfortunate that spousal abuse is still prevalent and that it continues to take a toll on partners, either male or female. She My nephew, like many men and women who die daily in violent relationships, would have been alive had they fled such deadly arrangements in the name of marriage.

“We, the family, will ensure that justice is done. This is another young and promising life deliberately cut short and this wickedness will not go unpunished.

“We would have intervened one way or the other but he hid the entire violent scenario from us. Persons suffering domestic violence should always call out for help. It was indeed a big tragedy for us.”

Politics › Pdp’s Understanding Of Restructuring Nigeria Shallow — APC by ijustdey(op): 6:45pm On Aug 21, 2017
The ruling All Progressives Congress has described the opposition Peoples Democratic Party’s definition and understanding of the restructuring of Nigeria as shallow and far from what Nigerians are asking for.

The two main parties had since the end of last week been engaged in a debate on an issue that has recently become the centre of national political discourse in Nigeria.

The APC had fired the first salvo when it criticised the opposition party as a latter-day convert on the issue, with the criticism drawing a sharp response on Sunday from the PDP spokesperson, Dayo Adeyeye, who defined and insisted that his party had always supported and planned for restructuring.

But in its latest statement on Monday through its spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, the APC insisted that the opposition party was merely being opportunistic and is attracted to the subject because it has become the “new political currency in Nigeria”.

He said the APC not only had provisions for the issue in the manifesto it presented ahead of the last general election, it has also “dusted up” the report of the 2014 National Constitutional Conference in its current effort to formulate a framework for implementation of the subject.

“The PDP’s definition and understanding of restructuring, from what they said in their statement, is shallow and that they do not know the kind of restructuring Nigerians are asking for,” Mr. Abdullahi continued.

“This should ordinarily be a welcome development, given that it provides opportunity for bi-partisan cooperation on this very important national issue.
“However, of concern to us is PDP’s rather shallow interpretation of restructuring as desired by Nigerians.

“In his release, Mr. Adeyeye quoted several aspects of his party’s constitution which he claimed serve as evidence that PDP believes in restructuring.

“A cursory review of the referenced parts of the constitution would, however, suggest either the PDP is deliberately out to mislead or it just does not have an appropriate understanding of the restructuring that Nigerians clamour for.

“For instance, Preamble 2(b) of the PDP constitution quoted by Adeyeye states: ‘To work together under the umbrella of the party for the speedy restoration of democracy, the achievement of national reconciliation, economic and social reconstruction and respect for human rights and the rule of law’.

“If statements such as the above are what the PDP intends to pass off as restructuring, this should further confirm that the party is still not in tune with the aspirations and dreams of the Nigerian people.

“It is indeed amusing that after being in power for 16 years, PDP is just waking up to realise that its constitution prescribed restructuring.

“If this is not political opportunism, we wonder what is. We understand that PDP needs desperately to return to reckoning; and realising that restructuring is the new political currency in Nigeria, it is now latching on and even claiming to be an apostle!

“As the ruling party between 1999 and 2015, PDP organised two national conferences, in 2005 and in 2014. They had nine years between the first conference and the second one and one full year between the time the report of the 2014 conference was submitted and the time it lost power in 2015.

“Perhaps, if PDP show which aspects of the two reports it had implemented in the time it had, then perhaps Nigerians might begin to take them seriously on the issue of restructuring.”

Mr. Abdullahi said if the PDP now believes in restructuring, then they are welcome as latter day converts; stressing, however, that the appropriate behaviour would be for the PDP to respect the efforts the APC is currently making to deliver on its manifesto on restructuring.

“It must interest the PDP that we have dusted up the reports of their national conferences from the shelves they had left them to gather dust and those reports are now forming part of the work we are doing with our committee, which they have tried hard to denigrate.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the APC believes in the restructuring of the country, it is at the very heart of our party’s manifesto.

“As explicitly stated in Section 3 (1) thus: ‘We will devolve more revenue and powers, such as policing to States and Local Government so that decision making is closer to the people. We pledge to bring the government closer to the people through fiscal and political decentralization, including local policing’.’’

The ruling party said it welcomes PDP and all the parties in opposition to work with it as it strives to meet the aspirations of Nigerians on “this very fundamental issue of our national existence.”

Politics › While The President Was Away by ijustdey(op): 2:03pm On Aug 20, 2017
Posted By: Dapo Olufade

In this report, Dapo Olufade takes a look at what happened while the president was on medical leave.

RUMOUR. Controversy. Threats. Countermands. Emotion. Fury. Theatrics.

None was in short supply in the country in the 103 days President Muhammadu Buhari spent in London, attending to his health.

Dutifully dispensing them at measured intervals were the politicians, political jobbers and mischief makers.

Once a controversy appeared to have served its course and began to wear out, another would suddenly pop-up, sending the populace into a fresh frenzy.

First was the storm over his Eid el Fitri message on the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on June 25.

How dare he address Nigerians in Hausa, many charged, after demanding that he should say something, just anything, to assure the nation that what they were hearing about him was not true.

The Sallah message broadcast was preceded by a statement issued by his media team.

The presidency only released the audio in an apparent response to distrustful Nigerians who had not heard from Buhari for nearly two months.

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State categorically declared the audio message a fraud.

Buhari, according to him, could not have spoken the words contained in the tape because he had it “on good authority” that the President had been “on life support since June 6.”

He told reporters at a so called ‘world press conference’ in Ado Ekiti that he had in his possession 11 photographs  of the President on life support in a London hospital, and would release them to the public ‘soon’.

He said: “The audio message does not represent the truth as our President does not only have voice impairment; he has been on life support since June 6, 2017 at a West-End, London Hospital.

“Of a fact, our First Lady, Mrs. Aisah Buhari was not allowed to see her husband during her last visit to the United Kingdom if only she will be courageous enough to admit.

“Only three Nigerians who are of the President’s cabal are allowed access to the President. I will keep their identities for now.”

As if taking a cue from Fayose, an online publication ran its own account of Buhari’s “bad condition.”

He was not allowed to see “his wife (Aisha) during her recent visit to the United Kingdom,” it said quoting presidency sources.

It also said Buhari had “not spoken to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo for several weeks following his departure from Abuja for a second round of medical treatment.

“The sources gave the example of Wednesday last week when members of Buhari’s cabal called the Acting President and asked him to await a call from the ailing President, pointing out that no such call was received except one that was just a few seconds of hellos before the person hung up the phone.”

In a follow up story on Osinbajo’s visit to Buhari in London in early July, the online publication reported that the meeting “lasted for five minutes only according to Presidency officials in the know of what transpired between the two leaders at the Abuja House in London.”

It also said Buhari “has a major difficulty speaking audibly as his treatment continues.”

A few days later, the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, and Governors Umaru Al-Makura (Nasarawa), Nasir el-Rufai (Kaduna), Rochas Okorocha (Imo), and Yahaya Bello (Kogi), visited Buhari in London in a bid to put a lie to speculations about the President’s health.

Former Aviation minister and PDP member, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode refused to be persuaded by the photographs of the meeting that went into circulation.

Like Fayose before him, he said they were manipulated.

His ‘sources’, he claimed had told him that the photographs were old ones, taken when Buhari was breaking the fast with the people seen in the photographs.

He had another evidence of the ‘deception’: drinks on the dining table were Nigerian products.

He said: “I have been reliably informed that the picture was taken in Abuja some time back and not yesterday in London.

“Quite apart from that, even though the picture was meant to have been taken in London curiously all the drinks on the table are Nigerian products and Nigerian-made.

“Did the Governors take all those drinks along with them to London when they went to see the President?

“What was the purpose and point of this fake photo-shoot and this strange breakfast meeting? What was the purpose and objective of this monumental fraud and deceit?

“Whatever the answers may be to these questions the curtain must be brought down on what can only be described as a puerile and nauseating conspiracy.

“For those who still believe that the meeting actually took place there are some nagging questions that need to be answered.

“For example why were the Nigerian and foreign media not allowed to cover the proceedings and participate in this celebrated photo-shoot and merry London feast?

“Why did the Villa press corps not take one of their own camera men to London and make a short video of the event?

“Why was the whole event shrouded in so much secrecy? Why is it that only one picture was taken? Why were more pictures not taken? Why was Buhari not put on audio tape and recorded talking to his guests?”

The answer soon came when a delegation of APC and PDP governors left for London to visit Buhari.

Others,  including the Archbishop of Canterbury, members of Buhari’s Media team, Senate President Bukola Saraki, House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara and the General Overseer Worldwide of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Adejare Adeboye took turns to bid Buhari get well soon.

In early July, the Senate sparked a controversy of its own when some members moved to make Senate President Bukola Saraki Acting President of the country.

The Red Chamber had, on resumption from a three week recess, received a letter from Osinbajo seeking the confirmation of Mr. Lanre Gbajabiamila, as Director General of National Lottery Regulatory Commission.

Incidentally, Osinbajo was briefly out of the country that day, prompting Senator Eyinanya Abaribe (Abia South), to say the country had no President or Acting President at that moment.

Saraki appeared to have read the mood of the majority of senators and of the nation and tactically ruled him out of order before the situation could degenerate

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu and some Northern youths would not allow the politicians monopolize the limelight.

Kanu, in utter violation of his bail conditions, addressed rally after rally in the South East, insisting that he and the Igbo must get out of Nigeria.

He shut down major towns in the South East on May 30 to mark Biafra day and vowed to stop the November 18 governorship election in Anambra, unless there is a referendum on the future of ‘Biafra’.

In early June, 16 northern youth groups emerging from a joint meeting in Kaduna gave Igbo residing in North up to October 1, 2017 to vacate the region.

In no time, fresh agitation for Nigeria’s restructuring swept through the country.

Even, the North which many Nigerians see as being afraid of restructuring told everyone who cared to listen that it is ready for it.

The Governors of the Northern states and the traditional rulers met in Kaduna and resolved to set up a committee to harmonize the views of the people for action at the appropriate time.

But the hatred sparked by the quit notice has been a little difficult to suppress.

Acting President Osinbajo met with leaders from the North and the South to douse the tension, only for some hate songs to emerge in parts of the country.

There was also a threat by Niger Delta militants to resume hostilities by the end of September if the federal government failed to fulfil its promises to the region.

A similar threat by Niger Delta elders to pull out of further talks with government prompted a peace meeting in Abuja with Osinbajo leading the government delegation.

Agreements were reached, compromises made, and peace returned.

For now, the sticking point in the social sector is the ASUU strike launched last week.

Government has admitted responsibility for failing to meet its part of the agreement earlier reached with the lecturers and now hopes that the teachers will return to the classrooms this week when all the issues in contention will have been sorted out.

Politics › Why Obasanjo Can’t Forgive The National Assembly by ijustdey(op): 7:57am On Aug 19, 2017
Many Nigerians may easily be fooled by the cat and mouse game between President Olusegun Obasanjo and the National Assembly. The former president continues to be a thorn in the flesh of the legislature with unrelenting attacks on the institution as a bastion of corruption. This week alone, Obasanjo has used two different platforms to hit the National Assembly as a cesspool of corruption.

Pushed to the point of embarrassment, the legislators have been forced to name the respected former president and international statesman as the ‘grandfather of corruption.’

Obasanjo has focused on what he describes as the humongous salaries and allowances pocketed by the legislators which he claims to be among the highest in the world. He has also condemned the constituency projects approved for lawmakers in the federal budget as an act of corruption. That is despite the fact that the concept of constituency projects started from his time as president.

However, beyond the claims and counter claims is the fact that both sides continue to cover the real reasons behind the bellyaching.

When the former president describes the legislators as corrupt, many of the legislators are often heard to reply tongue-in-cheek that he, Obasanjo, introduced them to it.

The president, of course, will also not tell us that he almost came out worse in all the alleged corrupt transactions between the two parties.

Just days before the 1999 Senate was to be inaugurated, Senator Chuba Okadigbo had emerged as the consensus candidate for the office of Senate President at a meeting of PDP senators-elect held at Agura Hotel, Abuja. Okadigbo undeniably worked for it, having visited practically all the senators-elect in their constituencies before the inauguration.

However, days before the inauguration, a sizeable number of senators-elect, mostly of the then All Peoples Party, APP; Alliance for Democracy, AD; and a few from the PDP were ferried to the Presidential Villa where Obasanjo had just taken possession of.

They were chaperoned by the late Dr. Segun Agagu at a meeting where they were prevailed upon to cast their votes for Senator Evan Enwerem, who was believed to be Obasanjo’s candidate. As they left the Presidential Villa that day they were handed bundles of cash, and thus corruption was introduced into the legislative transactions between the presidency and the National Assembly.

It is noteworthy that the same senators who collected money to vote for Enwerem barely five months later voted him out and brought in Okadigbo, the very man that they collected money to reject. That was the first betrayal.

The Third Term deal in which many legislators received a minimum of N50 million each to support the proposal was another classic betrayal.

There are few cases of organised corruption that can be compared with what transpired in that period. It is also difficult to imagine a greater act of political conspiracy by legislators.

While, a few senators like Udo Udoma, Ben Obi, Uche Chukwumerije, Joy Emodi, Siadu Dansadau stood in opposition to the amendment, many others opposed it in the day time but collected the money in the night time. In the House of Representatives, Temi Harriman stood out as the only PDP member from the South who opposed it. She had for company from the South, Uche Onyegocha, a member of APGA and Francis Amadiegwu.

Remarkably, even some prominent officers of the National Assembly who collected the money at that time have gone on record to claim to have killed it.

Even more, it is still emerging that one of the open drivers of the proposal may have worked to kill it behind the scene. Many Nigerians have continued to imagine what sin Senator Ibrahim Mantu committed to the extent that the agents of the Obasanjo administration reportedly worked to frustrate his re-election in 2007. Some, however, say suggestions that Mantu was in heart against Third Term would be a classic revision of history.

Unexpectedly, the senators caught everyone off guard when they killed the proposal by voice vote, and by that, left no trace of how to identify those who collected money but voted against it.

So when next President Obasanjo demonises the National Assembly and the legislators retort, we should read between the lines. They are speaking parables of betrayal, the kind of quarrel that erupts when thieves come to share their loot!

Crime › Saudi Police Beat Nasarawa Pilgrims, Injure One by ijustdey(op): 7:40am On Aug 19, 2017
By Abubakar Auwal, Medina

Saudi Arabian police have beaten two Nasarawa pilgrims as a result of which one them sustained head injuries.

According to our findings, the pilgrims who arrived last Wednesday were detained at the Medina airport for nine hours before the incident.

One of the officials of the Nasarawa State Pilgrims Welfare Agency, Malam Lawal Ahmad told Daily Trust that the pilgrims were earlier checked and nothing indiscriminating was found with them.

"They were checked and okeyed by the custom only to be called by some police officers who kept them waiting for nine hours before asking them to enter into one room, " he said

Ahmad added:"They were adamant because they didn't know their motive, so they forced them into the room and started beating them up, as a result one of them sustained injuries on head."

When contacted the Coordinator, National Hajj Commission in Madina, Dr. Bello Tambuwal confirmed the incident.

He said the commission had reported the matter to the appropriate authority for investigation and further action as they would not allow their pilgrims to be  maltreated unjustly.

However, Ahmad said the injured pilgrim had been treated and discharged.

Politics › First-time Senators, Reps Groan Under Biting Bank Loans by ijustdey(op): 8:42pm On Aug 18, 2017
BY AHURAKA ISAH, SOLOMON AYADO and ADEBIYI ADEDAPO,

There are indications that most of the Senators serving for the first time in the 8th Senate are grappling to settle very high loan repayment figures posted to their salary accounts by banks.

In the House of Representatives where more than 70 per cent of the 360 members are first time lawmakers, it is the same predicament as a reasonable number of them also took loans.

LEADERSHIP Friday gathered that the lawmakers had approached commercial banks in drove and obtained jumbo loans in expectation of high earnings at the National Assembly.

But their hopes were dashed following lean national revenue earnings and the policy of fiscal discipline, as well as the anti-corruption stance of the present federal government.

Reliable sources within the National Assembly and the banks who spoke to LEADERSHIP Friday yesterday said the Senators and members of the House took loans far in excess of the current stream of their earnings.

The sources who spoke to our correspondents on condition of anonymity noted, however, that there is nothing unusual for the lawmakers to obtain such high amount of monies as loans which they even repay from ‘allowances’ or ‘largesse’ which were not prescribed by the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

It was learnt that in the 8th Senate, 72 of the Senators are first timers, with most them badly affected by the bad loans.
While securing the loans hoping to repay within a year, they had to approach the banks again to re-apply for a spread of their loan repayments for two to three years.

It was also gathered that the banks usually grant these to the lawmakers, with a tenor of two years knowing full well that, while they are to serve for tenure of four years, giving them grace of three years, with just one year left to the expiration of their term in office might be too risky in terms of repayment.

“It is not unusual for the Senators, especially the new ones (first timers), to approach the banks to obtain loans to offset monies they borrowed to campaign, purchase new houses, settle four to five years rents, buy exotic cars to match their new status and meet other relevant or irrelevant demands”, one of the sources at the National Assembly said.

Corroborating this, a source at the bank said, ‘’We approached them and sold information on what their predecessors used to borrow from us and they bought into it. Unfortunately for them, the usual ‘accidental discharges’ as we used to call them are no longer forthcoming since this ‘change’ government came on board.

It is only their regular earnings which used to be about N45million per quarter for each Senator, N35 million per individual for members of the House which has since reduced to monthly payment that they are earning now. I can’t tell you the specific amount, but that jumbo amount is no longer paid to them’’.

Another source in one of the banks said, ‘’To let you know the rot pervading the system or earnings at the National Assembly before, the Auditor-General of the Federation disclosed last year that N10 billion was paid out in 2013 or so without vouchers.

‘’You see, certain National Assembly staff are always mandated to handle Senators’ vouchers and payment with strong warning to never under any circumstances disclose the content or let it out to anybody.

The Senate constituted a committee to investigate the N10 billion paid to themselves without vouchers shortly after the Auditor-General of the Federation revealed that findings and the report of that committee has since been shrouded in secrecy.

‘’All this talk that the National Assembly has opened their books for public scrutiny is sheer hoax and untrue, but there is serious reduction in opaque transactions and earnings by the federal lawmakers’’.

In the House of Representatives, some of the new lawmakers could not access the facility due to pending election petition cases at the tribunal and were not able to meet up with the time lag for the loans when the cases were dispensed with.

A principal officer who spoke with LEADERSHIP Friday confirmed that many lawmakers accessed different loan facilities, even as other members who returned to the House also benefited from loan facilities.

According to him, it is not totally correct that first time lawmakers rush into taking a loan with expectations of jumbo pay.

“It is true that many of us took loans, but it is not correct that majority of first time lawmakers took loans. This is because many of them had court cases and you know, nobody will grant you a loans request when you have a case in court. The case can eventually be decided against such a person”, he said.

But Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon Abdulrasaq Namdas denied that members are distressed and are under pressure to repay loans. “I am not aware of this, I am not aware that some lawmakers took loans and are now fidgeting to pay back”, he said.

Although Namdas did not establish whether his colleagues took loans from banks or not, he said whoever obtained a loan had done that as an individual.
“It is not only in the National Assembly that people take loans. People take loans everywhere, and it is a personal arrangement between the subscribers and their banks”, he added.

He further stated that banks would have perfected effective means of recovery before granting loan request. “Banks will give loan and put all measures in place for recovery, my colleagues are doing very fine and they are working hard to deliver their mandate”, Namdas stated.

While giving a sordid picture of financial recklessness during the former President Goodluck Jonathan administration on March 15, 2016, the AGF, Ukura, had said the management of the National Assembly allegedly disbursed N9,514,568,222.62 without raising payment vouchers.

The AGF released the shocking details in the nation’s 2014 audit report, which was submitted to the then Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Maikasuwa, for consideration by both chambers of the National Assembly.

The presentation, he said, was in line with section 85(2) (4) of the 1999 constitution which states: “The public accounts of the Federation and of all offices and courts of the Federation shall be audited and reported on by the Auditor-General who shall submit his reports to the National Assembly; and for that purpose, the Auditor-General or any person authorized by him in that behalf shall have access to all books, records, returns and other documents relating to those accounts”.

Ukura stated that about N3.2trillion revenue was not remitted to the Federation Account, just as $235.6 million earned from gas was diverted to undisclosed escrow accounts.

In fulfillment of his mandate, the AGF returned a damning verdict of sleaze and mismanagement of funds in 2014 under the Jonathan administration.

Also, on October 9, 2015 the Legislative Studies (NILS), an outfit of the National Assembly released a set of documents, showing what constituted the earnings of the 109 Senators and 360 members of the Nigerian House of Representatives.

The figure showed that while a Nigerian Senator gets an annual basic salary of N2,026,400,00, a member of the House of Representatives goes home with N1,985,212, 50 annually.

Beyond that, a Senator also takes home a bouquet of allowances which hike their salary to N12, 902, 360.00 while their House of Representatives counterpart goes home with N9,525,985.50 annually. Thus, for the four-year tenure which the lawmaker stays in NASS, the Nigerian government spends a total of N1, 406,357,240.00 as basic salary on the 109 Senators and N3,428,994,780.00 on the 360 members of the House of Representatives.

The breakdown of the allowances show that they are meant for “Vehicle fuelling/maintenance, Constituency, Domestic Staff, Personal Assistant, Entertainment, Recess, Utilities, Newspaper/Periodicals, Houses Maintenance, Wardrobe, Estacode, Duty Tour, which attract more money available to the lawmakers than their basic salaries.

But beyond that, the lawmakers earn special amount in every four-year period on accommodation, vehicle loan, furniture, and severance allowance, making every Senator to pocket N24,090,000.00 and a House of Representatives member N23,822,00.00 within the same period.

Thus, for every four years that a lawmaker stays in the NASS, the federal government spends N2,625, 810,000.00 on accommodation, vehicle loans, furniture and severance gratuity on the 109 Senators and N8,575,920,000.00 on the 360 House of Representatives members.

Business › 2019: Dangote Rules Out Presidential Bid by ijustdey(op): 4:32pm On Aug 18, 2017
…mulls $50bn investment in U.S., Europe, Asia, Mexico

Africa’s richest man and President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has ruled out possibility of him running for Nigeria’s presidency in 2019 general elections or in the near future. Dangote declared that he is not cut out for politics, stating that he is more comfortable with business.

There have been speculations that Dangote might take a shot at the presidency giving his net worth and influence. But Dangote told Bloomberg Markets Magazine that he is not ready to give up his freedom for politics “No, I’m not interested.

There’s quite a lot we can do from the business side. I enjoy a lot of what I am doing and I also love my freedom — and I don’t have too much. The little I have, politics would take away. I am not ready to give that up. There are businessmen who are interested in politics. I’m not one of them,” he said.

He, however, said there is need for cooperation with politicians. He said: “Well, in Africa, yes, I do think you need politicians. But at the same time, we cannot get things right unless there is good cooperation between politicians and businessmen. It’s a win-win.

When you look at it today, in Nigeria, over 85 per cent of the GDP is from the private sector.” On whether he is under pressure to make political donations, he said: “Well, you know the political donation depends on who you are dealing with and who you are donating money to. But the issue is we don’t go and give people in politics money for favours.

“I’ve told presidents of countries, ‘I’m a contractor, I’m running a business, I don’t need any favours.’ And really, when you look at it today, in all our businesses, we don’t need any favours… We’ve done our numbers.

We think this business will work and we don’t need government support.” Dangote said he is satisfied with his successful investment in Africa, declaring that he is considering extending his business interest to Europe, the American and Asian continents.

Specifically, the business mogul has identified Mexico as a destination of interest while the particular Asian country is still under wrap. Disclosing his future investment plans to Bloomberg Markets Magazine, Dangote also revealed his intention to invest up to $50 billion in the United States and Europe beginning as early as 2020 with renewable energy and petrochemicals on the deck.

“Beginning in 2020, 60 per cent of our future investments will be outside Africa, so we can have a balance; our major investment will be in the US and Europe. I think renewables is the way to go forward and the future.

We are looking at petrochemicals, but can also invest in other companies, mostly in Europe and the US, but we can also invest in Asia, in Mexico. “We are looking at petrochemicals, but can also invest in other companies. We must believe in the management and what they are doing. But the priorities are here for now. In 2020, the priorities will change and we’ll diversify because we will have the cash to divest.

“Let’s say that by 2025,I’m looking at between $20 billion and $50 billion. Mind you, we don’t do small things,” he said. On the notion that his firm will compete in Asia, US and Europe, Dangote said: “The market is already big. It’s a big fight, big enough for everyone. We will not go alone; we will have partners, too. Having partners there makes a lot of sense.

“We’ve done $18 billion of business in the span of about four years, which is almost unheard of in Africa. Most people don’t know what is happening in Africa or that we’re the first African company to attempt these endeavours – cement, agriculture and now so much more.

“Sometimes you meet people and they look at you and say, ‘how did this guy get here?’ Because if you say ‘you are in Africa,’ they think Africa is a jungle – that’s the issue. So, unless you go and see, you will not believe these things are happening,” he said.

The industrial giant, whose businesses currently covers cement, sugar, agriculture and an $11 billion oil refinery in Lagos, noted that his knack for widespread investment was not just about making money, but making impact. He said for over 20 years, Dangote was just a trading company, but decided to be an industrial giant by starting somewhere. “It wasn’t just about cement. It was about industrialisation. If you look at what Dangote Group is doing, it’s about improving people’s lives,” he added.

In the last five years, the group has diversified rapidly both geographically and into new industries. Dangote Cement Plc., which accounts for almost 80 per cent of his wealth, has expanded into nine African countries aside from Nigeria. In 2015, he began building a 650,000 barrel-a-day refinery on the outskirt of Lagos and he is constructing gas pipelines to the city from Nigeria’s oil region with US private equity firms, Carlyle Group LP and Blackstone Group LP.

He said he would invest $4.6 billion in the next three years in sugar, rice and dairy production. On his sudden interest in agriculture, Dangote said Africa’s dependence on food importation was uncalled for since the continent had the land and weather to make agriculture thrive. According to him, “when you look at it – not just in Nigeria, but in the rest of Africa –majority of countries here depend on imported food; there is no way you can have a population of 320 million in West Africa and no self sufficiency.

So, the first thing to do is food security. I believe Dangote Group is in the right position to drive this trajectory. “We have land, we have water, we have the climate – we shouldn’t be a massive importer of food. With modern farming you can get eight to 10 tons per hectare. I expect another five to 10 companies to join our efforts in the next year. By 2019, we might be able to actually create about 290,000 jobs in agriculture. And that’s what you can do to empower people, especially those from rural areas.”

The passionate industrialist, however, ruled out moving into newer sectors such as telecommunications or technology, saying: “When I look at telecoms, for instance, I think that would be very tough for us. “Some players have been in this market for 17 years already.

There’s no way you can go and jump over somebody after 17 years of their hard work. So, I think we would pass when it comes to telecoms today. There are other businesses that we understand better.”

Politics › Salaries: Lawmakers Are Unarmed Robbers – Obasanjo by ijustdey(op): 9:35pm On Aug 17, 2017
Posted By: Yinka Adeniran,

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo Thursday in Ibadan described members of the National Assembly as a “bunch of unarmed robbers”, over their huge salaries and allowances.

Obasanjo, who hit hard at the National lawmakers, said the current legislators are one of the highest paid lawmakers in the world, despite the fact that  an estimated 75 percent of Nigerians populace live in poverty.

He added that the arm of government should be roundly condemned.

The former president spoke at the book presentation of Prof. Mark Nwagwu entitled: “I am Kagara, I Weave the Sands of Sahara”.

The event, which held at the University of Ibadan, had Obasanjo as the Chief Host while the former Minister of Education, Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili chaired the occasion.

Stressing that he is expecting another round of bashing from the federal lawmakers, the former President said he would continue to lambast them for constituting a huge percentage of the nation’s overhead cost.

He lamented that the nation would hardly develop when about 90 percent of revenue was spent on overhead costs, rather than on capital expenses.

Speaking on the ongoing impasse between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the 2009 agreement, Obasanjo, said government allowed itself to be stampeded into signing agreements without full consultation within government.

However, he added that regardless of that, the government was bound to implement whatever agreement reached with workers’ unions.

He said: “Government allows itself to be stampeded into signing agreement particularly when one group or the other withdraws their service and go on strike. After the agreement has been signed, without full consultation within government, and implementation becomes an issue.

“But an agreement is an agreement whoever the agent is that signed that agreement on your behalf, you are bound by it. You may now have to renegotiate to have a new agreement but the agreement earlier signed remains an agreement.

“The universities teachers go on strike, there is an agreement; doctors go on strike, there will be a special agreement. And when the universities teachers see that the agreement reached with the doctors is different from theirs, they again go on strike and this is bad for our economy.

“The way we are going about spending all our revenue to pay overhead, we will not develop. And we will have ourselves to blame. Ninety percent of revenue is used to pay overhead, allowances, salaries and not much is left for capital development.

“In a situation like that, we have to rethink.

“It is even worse for the National Assembly. They will abuse me again but I will never stop talking about them. They are a bunch of unarmed robbers.”

“They are one of the highest paid in the world where we have 75 percent of our people living in abject poverty. They will abuse me tomorrow and if they don’t, maybe they are sleeping. The behaviour and character of the National Assembly should be condemned and roundly condemned.”

In her remarks at the occasion, the Chairperson of the event, Dr. Ezekwesili, remarked that the 289-page book, was a tool for Nigeria to examine the extent to which she had lost her values and culture.

She decried the loss of community spirit, warning that Nigeria must never negotiate her values.

According to her, the world was currently such that humanity tried to figure out what happened to morality.

The book reviewer, Mr Nwachukwu Egbunike, in his remarks on the book noted the theme of feminism and how women navigate life intricacies towards achieving success in life.

Egbunike also lauded the author’s ability to weave around different concepts in both the spirit and natural world.

Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, University of Ibadan, Professor Olanike Adeyemo remarked that Nwagwu’s book was a veritable instrument to help the younger generation keep touch with culture.

The event was attended by both academic and non-academic staff of the university who were on hand to celebrate the author and his wife, Helen

Politics › Buhari Coming Back To Nigeria – Presidency by ijustdey(op): 9:09am On Aug 15, 2017
Wale Odunsi 

Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Babafemi Ojudu, on Monday said President Muhammadu Buhari is coming back to Nigeria.

He said this while dismissing comments that the presidency sponsored some Nigerians to embark on solidarity protests across the country in support of Buhari.

Ojudu told State House correspondents that the presidency does not hire people for protest marches, saying that those who participated in the pro-Buhari protest were die-hard supporters of the president.

“I was working in my office when I was called to go and receive them, just the way we also received the BringBackOurGirls’ protesters last time.

”This presidency does not give money to anybody. This is not our tradition, is not our culture to buy protest or induce people to do any.

“You will be surprised the day President Buhari is coming back to see the millions of people that will go to the airport to welcome him,’’ he said.

Ojudu clarified that the presidency did not shun the coalition of civil society organisations demanding that Buhari resume duty or resign.

He said: ”If they decide to talk to us we talk to them. This group has a special message for the acting president and they wrote to us that they were coming and we received them.

“Those ones never informed us of anything. They were just doing their own protests and that was it.’’

Crime › Naval Personnel, Wife Arrested For Beating Man To Death by ijustdey(op): 9:17am On Aug 11, 2017
A Naval personnel serving in Lagos State, Uzochukwu Anyanwu, as well as his wife, Victoria, have been arrested for allegedly beating a man, Gambo Mohammed, to death at Berger Suya bus-stop area of Oshodi-Apapa expressway.

The naval personnel was said to have killed the deceased for trying to settle a rift between his wife and a yet to be identified commercial motorcyclist.Although Uzochukwu Anyawu has since been handed over to the Nigerian Navy, his wife, Victoria, is still being detained at the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti in Lagos.

A police source said since Anyanwu was handed over to the navy, the naval authorities have refused to hand him back to the police to conclude their own investigation. The source alleged that the police have vowed to arraign the wife if the navy continues to hold on to the suspect.

It was gathered that the wife of the naval personnel had taken a commercial motorcycle from Wilmer bus-stop, Olodi to Berger Suya on an agreed fee, but that on arrival at the destination, Victoria refused to pay.

Consequently, a violent argument ensued between both parties and the woman bluntly refused to pay the exact fee agreed with the Okada rider. When she got there, she decided not to pay the agreed amount and they started fighting. The naval officer’s wife started dragging the Okada rider by the collar of his shirt. It was at this point the deceased decided to mediate.

An eyewitness, Bayo Kilani, alleged that Victoria pounced on the deceased, demanding to know who authorize him to interfere in the matter.“She grabbed hold of the deceased and then put a telephone call through to her husband. Minutes later, a man arrived at the seen on another bike.

We later discovered that the man is the woman’s husband. He started beating the deceased. His wife also joined in beating the commercial motorcyclist. It is a clear case of murder and the law must take its cause.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Olarinde Famous-Cole, could not be reached, but a police source at the command headquarters said the police was still waiting for the naval authorities to handover Uzochukwu to them for trial.

Travel › Nigerians Caught Hiding Under Moving Train To Germany (pics) by ijustdey(op): 2:09pm On Aug 10, 2017
By Nsikak Nseyen

German police have apprehended a group of Nigerian immigrants who hid on a freight train trying to enter Germany illegally.

According to a report by Reuters, seven adults and five unaccompanied minors climbed out of the train, traveling from the Italian city of Verona to Munich, after police found them in a spot check using heat detection cameras in the southern town of Raubling.

Most of the arrested Immigrants who are Nigerians, Somalians, Ivoirians were wearing only shorts and T-Shirts and had hidden under lorries transported on the train. One had an injured leg and was unable to walk unaided.

Police in the city of Rosenheim, which is near the Austrian border have said they are finding an increasing number of migrants seeking to enter the country illegally.

Scharf said they had found 20 so far in August and more than 100 in July. “That’s a clear increase, because in the first half of the year we only found 20 people in total.

The security guard suspected his wife was having an affair while he was working night shifts and planned a trap to “catch her with her hands in the dough”, according to police.

The couple’s three children were sleeping in the house when Garcia allegedly pulled a handgun on the couple, shooting them at around 9pm on 4 August.

The security guard was tipped off about the couple’s secret tryst by neighbours and pretended to go to work so he could catch Castellanos and Gomez in the act.

Garcia stayed at a friends house and called Castellanos at around 9pm to check on the children and burst into the family home moments later, catching the lovers in the act.

He was later arrested in what police called a “horrific crime of passion” the Villa Maria area of Soledad.

But even though police say the man handed himself in and confessed to his crimes, he did not show remorse.

He is believed to have told officers: “She was unfaithful and sullied my honour as a man. All I did was remove the woman who destroyed my life in this world.”
