Travel › Woman Burnt To Death In Ibadan Tanker Fire (Photo) by ijustdey(op): 8:26pm On May 17, 2017 |
Olufemi Atoyebi, Ibadan
A yet to be identified woman was burnt to death in Ibadan when a diesel tanker suddenly detached from the chassis of a truck after it failed to climb a hill.
The diesel- laden tanker crushed the car driven by the deceased. Eyewitnesses said the impact of the crash ignited a huge fire which burned the sole occupant of the car beyond recognition.
The fire destroyed properties worth millions of naira.
“The articulated vehicle, which was filled with diesel, was coming from Eleiyele area and travelling towards Ologuneru hill. When the truck had difficulty dragging the tanker along the hill , the tanker detached from the truck and crushed the car driven by the dead woman.
“ It also poured its content on the road and the fire was ignited , burning the woman, who was trapped in the car and other vehicles , ” said a witness who identified himself as Yinka.
Yinka said more than five houses were destroyed in the inferno adding that diesel flowed towards the Eleyele river which is about 300 meters away from the scene of the accident.
One of the destroyed properties was a church called Save and Serve Ministry , which was lately rebuilt after a section of it was affected by construction work going on on the Ologuneru road.
Firefighters from the Oyo State Fire Service rushed to the scene of the accident and battled hard to put out the fire.
Also present at the scene were Special Rescue Squad of the state police command and men of the Federal Road Safety Corps , who ensured that order was maintained.
The combined efforts of the Police , FRSC and fire service was needed to remove the burnt body of the deceased from her mangled car. http://punchng.com/woman-burnt-to-death-in-ibadan-tanker-fire/Pics credits: http://punchng.com/photos-woman-burnt-to-death-in-ibadan-tanker-fire/lalasticlala

Health › Chinelo Chidozie And Ndidi Obidoa Develop Sunscreen Cream For Black Skin (Photo) by ijustdey(op): 1:36pm On May 17, 2017 |
Two sisters from Nigeria, Chinelo Chidozie and Ndidi Obidoa, have have created sunblock designed specifically for darker skin tones.
The duo who are founders of the black skin care line Bolden , are set to launch the sun block soon.
While speaking with OkayAfrica, the duo said that contrary to popular belief, black people do need sunscreen, even though Melanin helps to fight the sun’s rays.
However, because most available sunscreens are developed for light skin, they all leave white residue on dark skin, which prevents many black people from wearing sunblock.
Although black people have a lower risk of getting skin cancer than white people, they have significantly higher death rates from skin cancer.
A study in 2016 found that black people were most likely to be diagnosed with melanoma in its later stages, with the worst prognosis and the lowest overall survival rate.
“ A lot of black people don’t wear sunblock because they don’t see the damage immediately, ” Chidozie told OkayAfrica in an interview published on April 29.
“There’s an issue with education around sunscreen in the black community . Even though skin cancer doesn't affect people of color as much as it affects people with white skin, that makes it more dangerous because it’ s often not caught until it ’ s in an advanced stage.”
The formula for their brightening moisturizer sunscreen has Vitamin C and SPF 30, and dries clear on the skin. The product is set to be rolled out this summer. http://punchng.com/nigerian-sisters-develop-sunscreen-cream-for-black-skin/

Health › "N1Bn Worth Of HIV Drugs Expired In Storage" - Health Minister by ijustdey(op): 6:52am On May 17, 2017 |
Eniola Akinkuotu, Abuja
The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has revealed that $3.2m ( N1.08bn) worth of HIV drugs expired in storage.
Adewole said this while delivering a speech at the ‘Dissemination Meeting of 2016 National Health Facility Survey’ in Abuja on Tuesday.
He said clinical competence and knowledge of healthcare workers, availability of drugs and basic equipment, and management and supervision of healthcare facilities were essential to the improvement of the health sector.
The minister said, “ Availability of commodities is also important. We have mentioned inadequate funding which is a major factor but it is not the only reason for the out of stock of commodities. Better management is also important.
“ We are living witnesses to the challenges we face with the HIV programme where drugs worth about $3. 2m expired. So, it is not a question of it ( drugs) not being available. Sometimes the drugs are there but we don’ t give it to them ( patients) and then they expire . ”
Speaking with our correspondent after the event , the minister said the incident would not repeat itself as mechanisms had been put in place to forestall such.
Adewole added, “ The issue is that the drugs expired because of some challenges in the system and we are trying to putting that behind us. We are now putting together a network of logistics supply system . We have two excellent facilities in Abuja and Lagos which we call ‘Warehouse in a Box ’.
“ The one in Abuja is called Premium Medical Supplies Store and everything there is computerised and with that kind of system, there will be no more expired drugs because we will be able to monitor them electronically. It will be a system of first in, first out and we will also be monitoring expiry dates.
“ What we are also trying to avoid in the country is a situation where we take drugs that are about to expire . When you pick drugs that have short shelf lives like six months, they can expire easily. ”
Meanwhile, Adewole has said putting money in the health sector is not expenditure but an investment that will yield dividends.
He said this at National Stakeholders Validation Meeting of the second National Strategic Health Development Plan framework which was attended by health commissioners from the 36 states of the federation.
Adewole said there was a sense of urgency for governments at all levels, particularly the state governments to have the political will to place high premium on budget financing for health because, over time, budget for health was grossly inadequate.
He said, “ Health is an investment issue, health is security and, above all, health is a human right issue , the right to health should not deny anyone. ”
The minister said that the Federal Government was working with the state governments to revitalise the primary healthcare centres , adding that ailments like malaria, Tuberculosis, HIV /AIDS were better treated at the primary health care level. http://punchng.com/n1bn-hiv-drugs-expired-in-storage-says-fg/lalasticlala |
Politics › Dickson: Jonathan’s Presidency Was A Waste For Ijaws by ijustdey(op): 6:13am On May 17, 2017 |
Seriake Dickson, governor of Bayelsa state, on Tuesday, described the five years administration of ex- President Goodluck Jonathan as a wasted opportunity for the Ijaws.
According to The Nation, Dickson said ministers and other presidential aides from Bayelsa lost the unique opportunity of attracting development to their domains because they were after selfish interests.
He spoke at the Ijaw House, Yenagoa, where handful of Ijaw leaders and youths gathered for the annual celebration of Adaka Boroh, the hero who fought and died for the Ijaw struggle for self-determination. Dickson led John Jonah, his deputy, and members of his cabinet to the event.
Also at the event were Twon Brass, former military administrator of old Rivers state, Alfred Diette-Spiff, a monarch, wife, daughter, other family members of the late Boroh and some traditional rulers.
Speaking before laying wreaths at the tomb of Boroh in the Heroes’ Park, Dickson said the persons who served in the presidency during Jonathan’s era failed to work with him in the quest to bring development to the state.
Instead, he said they were preoccupied with “devilish plot” of unseating him and installing another governor in his stead.
“They suffered from the Bayelsa-Ijaw disease of pulling-him-down syndrome,” Dickson said.
The governor lamented that similar scenario was playing out in the current administration at the federal level, where ministers and aides from the state had refused to use their positions to assist his government’s developmental efforts.
“It is true that we are celebrating Boroh, but ask yourself whether you are doing your bit.
Boroh came, saw and did his bit and has gone. I and my team have come and we have taken up the battle from where Boroh stopped and we are doing our duties,” he said.
“Each of us must examine ourselves and to be frank we have not done very serious examination in this state and in the Ijaw nation. We cannot blame God. God has been very merciful and kind to us particularly of late.” https://www.thecable.ng/dickson-jonathans-presidency-waste-ijaws

“They were so many faculties of the maritime in universities when we came, we went about rebranding it and stop that contract award, that money was gotten from the ship `building fund , that fund are meant for Nigerians who built ship.

Crime › Co-tenant Slaps Nursing Mother To Death by ijustdey(op): 1:25pm On May 15, 2017 |
By Cephas Iorhemen
Confusion at the weekend enveloped Madikpo in Makurdi, Benue State when a nursing mother, Monica, died during a fight with her co-tenant, Sewuese. It was learnt that the two women engaged in a fisticuff over confectioneries their kids were eating and playing with. Sewuese allegedly slapped Monica while the latter died.
Trouble, sources said, started last Friday following a brief discord between Sewuese’s brother whose name could not be ascertained at press time and the victim, who also allegedly slapped the deceased, prompting prolonged quarrel.
The quarrel was reportedly settled when other tenants and neighbours intervened. A witness said the quarrel spilled over to Saturday when the ‘sweet’ the deceased bought for her little baby was allegedly taken from the baby by Sewuese’s kid.
Sources said when the deceased heard the cry of her baby; she rushed in to inquire when Sewuese accosted her. Sewuese allegedly slapped the victim who collapsed and died instantly. But when contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Moses Yamu, said the matter had not been reported to him. Yamu, however, promised to release details to our correspondent when he received the report. https://newtelegraphonline.com/metro/co-tenant-slaps-nursing-mother-death/ |

Politics › How Saraki Arranged Recent Meeting With Buhari Over Health Status’ by ijustdey(op): 4:39pm On May 14, 2017 |
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, arranged the meeting between him, President Muhammadu Buhari and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara to douse tension in the country over the medical status of the president, an impeccable source said yesterday.
Daily Trust on Sunday reports that the President before embarking on his medical follow-up trip met with Saraki and Dogara in the company of the Chief Staff, Abba Kyari, last Sunday.
A source in National Assembly said the meeting was based on the suggestion of the Senate President. It was gathered that when Kyari contacted Saraki and informed him of the President’s trip, he (Saraki) advised that a meeting should be organized.
The source who does not want to be named said: “When Kyari called Saraki who just returned to Abuja from a weekend trip to Lagos that they are sending a letter as President would travel that night. Saraki told him that they had to manage the issue better and in a manner that will not fuel suspicion and unfounded speculations.
“He suggested that he and Dogara should be allowed to come and see the President that evening with the opportunity to take photographs that can be sent out for public consumption. The photo would present them as wishing him well on his trip,” he said.
Such photo shots, he said, would douse the speculations that Buhari was on sick bed taking intravenous fluid or that he was incapacitated or to be flown out secretly on an air ambulance.
He added that people need to be assured that the President was not down but just required more medical check-up as he had hinted when he returned to the country last March.
The source said, that was why when the President’s letter was read on the floor of the Senate and Senator Mao Ohunabunwa raised a point of order on the use of “Coordinator” instead of acting President for the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Saraki ruled him out of order after the Senate Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan deflated the argument.
But when contacted, the Special Adviser Media and Publicity to Saraki, Alhaji Yusuph Olaniyonu, declined comments. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/-how-saraki-arranged-recent-meeting-with-buhari-over-health-status/197615.htmllalasticlala |

Webmasters › Nigerian Govt Issues Advisory On Massive Global Cyberattack by ijustdey(op): 9:04pm On May 13, 2017 |
The National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, on Saturday issued an emergency advise to Nigerians about a rampaging ransomware virus that emerged across the globe on Friday.
Within the last 24 hours, no fewer than 100,000 computers were reported affected in 99 countries by ransomware, which encrypts a computer and demands a $300 ransom before unlocking it.
The virus, also known as “WannaCry” or “Wannacrypt”, is believed to be part of the United States National Security Agency hacking tools that were leaked earlier in the year.
The ransomware virus swept computers running on Microsoft Windows Operating System, especially those not currently supported such as Windows XP, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2003, across the globe.
In March, Microsoft, in an unusual move, released a patch for all the old, non-supported operating systems to protect computers vulnerable to the NSA leaks, But the ransomware virus proved so malicious that Microsoft had to issue another patch for all Windows OS-based computers dating back as far as 14 years.
Notable organisations affected by the virus since Friday include the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, along with Telefonica in Spain. Courier giant, FedEx, was also hit by the virus, Sky News reported.
All recent Microsoft computers are automatically protected from the virus, reports said.
In a statement issued by its Director General, Ibrahim Pantami, NITDA gave Nigerians guidelines on how to protect their personal and workplace computers from being affected by ransomware.
“Should your system be infected by ransomware, isolate the system from your network to prevent the threat from further spreading. In addition, the following actions can be taken immediately:
• Remove the system from Network.
• Do not use flash/pen drive, external drives on the System to copy files to other systems.
• Format the System completely and get fresh OS copy installed.
For emergency assistance, contact NITDA Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team (CERRT) on: 800-9988-7766- 5544 or e-mail: support@cerrt.ng.
As a general precautionary measure, NITDA recommended that individuals and organisations should:
• Regularly update their operating systems with the latest patches.
• Regularly update their software applications with latest patches.
• Avoid downloading and opening unsolicited files and attachments.
• Adjust security software to scan compressed or archived files
• Avoid indiscriminate use of wireless connections, such as Bluetooth or infrared ports. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/231153-nigerian-govt-issues-advisory-on-massive-global-cyberattack.htmllalasticlala |

Adeniyi Olugbemi, Sokoto
A housewife, Rukayya Hamza, of Alkammawa area in the Sokoto North Local Government Area has dragged her husband, Ghazali Garba, before the city lower sharia court in Sokoto, seeking to divorce him for not slaughtering rams to mark their children’s naming ceremonies.
Rukayya told the court, presided over by Faruk Ibrahim, that the husband only gave names to the children, Idris and Khadija, three years and five months respectively, without slaughtering rams.
She also complained that Ghazali Garba was not feeding her, and most times, beat her, urging the court to dissolve their marriage.
The husband admitted not slaughtering rams during the naming, but denied other allegations his wife levelled against him.
He told the court that he neither starved her wife of food nor maltreated her.
Garba said, “ I did not slaughter rams on the children's naming because I was insolvent whenever she was delivered of the children. So, I gave names to the children like that.”
Adjourning the case till May 23, 2017, the judge urged the wife to present witnesses to testify against the husband as she claimed. http://punchng.com/woman-seeks-divorce-over-naming-ceremonies-without-rams/

Politics › National Assembly Earmarks N6.4bn For Cars by ijustdey(op): 10:11pm On May 11, 2017 |
The national assembly on Thursday disclosed the details of its 2017 budget. This was after eight years of keeping it a guarded secret.
The total budget for the legislature this year is N125bn. This is N10bn higher than that of last year – of which details were not disclosed.
While the senate will splash N2.6bn on automobiles, the house will do the same at the cost of N3.8bn.
However, there seems to be a niggling issue with the budgetary allocation for cars. N6.4bn was earmarked for the purchase of “motor vehicles”.
But when compared with previous spends on cars, the amount beggars belief – it is a far cry from last year’s amount which was about N4.7bn.
In February 2016, the management of the national assembly took delivery of 10 princely cars for the senate president at the cost of about N330m. This was when the country was in the throes of recession.
And in November of the same year, the house of representatives took delivery of some Peugeot 508 series at the cost of about N3.6bn for its members.
Federal lawmakers will spend N235m on newspapers alone.
While the senate will spend N424m on photocopying machines and other office equipment, the house will spend N353m on the same.
Also, the upper legislative chamber will spend N293m on the printing of non-security document and N247m on medical supplies while the lower legislative chamber will spend N686m on printing and N503m on medical supplies.
For security services, the senate will spend N449m while the house has N960m for the same purpose.
The legislators in the upper legislative chamber will spend N578m on fuel and lubricants while those in the lower chamber will spend N1.6bn on the same.
For refreshments and meals senators will spend N409m; for publicity and advertisement N1.4 billion, while their counterparts in the house will gulp N913m for the same items.
Contingency and programme activities for the senate will take N1.3bn and N2.6 billion respectively, while the same will take N890m and N3.5bn for the house. https://www.thecable.ng/n-assembly-earmarks-n237m-cars-splashing-billions-2016
